Guide lines on senior seminar paper format and styles

What is seminar?

Any meeting for an exchange of ideas.

A course offered for a small group of advanced students.

A seminar is, generally, a form of academic instruction, either at a university or offered by a commercial or professional organization ( focusing each time on some particular subject)

What is the idea behind the seminar course itself?

• To familiarize students more extensively with the title of their chosen subject.

• To give opportunity to conduct extensive literature review on certain topic, present the review both via written and oral report.

• To read, think, write, and talk about a particular topic in depth.

• Finally the student is expected to know how to write and present scientific paper.

Specific objectives

The student will have a chance of:

how to write scientific paper

An intensive library/internet investigation of some topic approved by the faculty and write a review paper.

Practice in giving a seminar.

Getting feedback from the audience that may help to enhance her/his skills as presenter.

Being exposed to different specialties within the field of his study.

1. Paper format

1.1 Paper size

Use only white A4 size ( 21cm X29cm) paper

1.2 Typing

12 font size throughout except on the title page ( 14 font size)

Write only on one side

Don’t use the other side for any purpose

Neatness and legibility

1.3 Margins

Leave 2.5cm margin at top and bottom except

• when it is necessary to reduce the margins to insert a large table or figure

Leave 2.5cm in the left side

The title should be written on the top of table

Write the title at the bottom when it is a figure

Place the table or illustrative materials as close as possible to the thing it refers in the text.

Number all pages consecutively starting from introduction

At the bottom of the page ( 123….), centre

Will be written in roman numbers ( I , II, III……)

The back cover hard plastic or some other hard paper

2.3 Table of content

The first words of each of the main titles and subtitles should begin with capitalized

main title upper case

2.4 Summary

Clearly defined what is dealt in the paper

Should contain statement of the problem, objectives and conclusions

Must not contain statement not mentioned in the paper

Should not exceed more than 350 words

Key words ( maximum 6 and optional)

For whatever information you have paraphrase or summarized

It is mandatory for quoted materials from books, journals…

There is no need to cite for information which is common knowledge

All reference cited in the text must be included in the Re. list

List of references are arranged alphabetically according to the names of author (s)

Preparation Phase

Consider the interest of your audience

- take care of poor material

- too much of already known facts

Don’t try to cover too much

Prepare a written outline of major points

Preparation well ahead of time

Think of ways to stimulate interest in your introduction

Avoid too much slides (15min)

Finally, try to practice the complete presentation before the actual presentation ( Record the time)

2. The presentation phase

Deliver the presentation in word/phrases that easily understood orally ( professional, but familiar terms)

Be sure to give your audience an over view topic and structure

Provide a rational for your presentation

Be conscious of posture, movements, eye contact, facial expression and gesture

Avoid distracting visual or behaviours as much as possible

Manage and control anxiety and nervousness

- realize that anxiety is normal

- be well prepared

- remember that you don’t appear as nervous as you feel

- remember that your listeners want you to succeed
