As a result, we have received many queries across our school community asking about the likelihood of a new date for our 50 th Anniversary Golden Jubilee Day. The 50 th anniversary team had planned many exciting activities for the day and are very happy to announce that these planned activities are now scheduled for Saturday 20 th March 2021. This event is scheduled around state elections, long weekends and other school events, and is planned to go ahead under the stage 5 WA Roadmap to recovery. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all members of the 50 th Anniversary team for their time, effort and patience in coordinating this day and I know the team are looking forward to unveiling part of the STW9 tower from 5:30pm on the school open night. VISIT FROM VASSE PS As a Teacher Development School (TDS), Walliston Primary School is working in partnership with Vasse Primary School around engaging whole school pedagogies. Mrs Giglia attended a seminar at the Perth Stadium last Monday, where she shared our schools 3C Inquiry Approach to other schools across Western Australia. Simon Mansfield, deputy principal from Vasse PS, and who was recently acknowledged as an innovator in education, met with Mr Bushby and other staff to share each school s pedagogy around effective teaching and learning. A partnership that both schools plan to continue to develop over the next couple of years. INTERM SWIMMING UPDATE Interm swimming is a school-based swimming program that provides quality swimming lessons across the state to ensure children develop vital swimming and water safety skills. Due to the COVID pandemic, our schools Interm swimming program was cancelled back in March. Many families have paid their 2020 Interm swimming fees as part of their Contribution fee at the beginning of the year. This week parents will receive a note from the school in regards to requesting a refund or rolling your payments over to the 2021 Interm swimming lessons. Please read the note carefully and have it returned to the school office as soon as possible. ARTIST IN RESIDENCE This week, we were very fortunate to have a talented and creative artist who has enhanced our wonderful school environment. Mrs Hegedusson, Glenn Hegedus is a well-known artist throughout the southwest region of WA, and this week he has had the pleasure of listening to some critique feedback from the Walliston students, as he revamps our old water tank near our school kitchen garden. I would like to thank Glenn for offering his time to make our public school a little more special to learn in. BUSY BEE Strong sense of communityis a key component of our school vision, and this Saturday 29 th August our school P&C are asking for support to help prepare our school grounds for our school open night, school sporting carnivals and the Wally Boys Car Show in November. Key projects include the removal of the existing cricket nets, preparation for the STW9 Tower and upgrading the long jump pits. Further information about the day can be found in the newsletter or on the schools P&C Facebook page. EXCITING SCHEDULE AHEAD The Term 3 Planner highlights that the next few weeks are going to be very busy. Please take note of all the events happening during the remainder of the term. From school assemblies, to hot chocolate Wednesdays, open nights, athletics carnivals, incursions, excursions, Italian lunches to 5 West Coast Eagle games within 21 days. Now that is a busy end to a school term. To help the Dads get through it, Sunday 6 th September is your day off for a day of rest and relaxation, I know you all deserve it. MAKING FRIENDS:

Friendships are important for happiness and wellbeing, particular around adolescence. This is a stage when kids work out their friendship groups, sometimes excluding others from peer groups for little apparent reason. Girls often form close and intense friendship groups as they enter their teens. They often have best friends who can change dramatically from one day to the next. Boys tend to form looser and less exclusive social groups, often based around mutual interests. It can be lonely for children or young people who find themselves isolated from peer groups or without a best friend.

A few ideas to help kids make friends:

*If possible, talk with your children about friendships, so you can offer support when there are problems and provide some ideas when needed. *Identify and talk about any poor behaviour such as teasing, bullying or self- centeredness that may prevent your child from making friends. *Teach some social skills such as how to start up a conversation and how to hold the interest of others during a conversation

*Provide opportunities for your child to have friends at your place after school or on weekends, so that friendships can develop. Friendships do take time…….. *Encourage your child to participate in out of school activities or groups such as sports, scouts, hobby groups, which may provide opportunities to meet new people away from the peer groups at school *Encourage your child to take up a challenging or interesting activity so that he or she becomes a more interesting person to be around

Music News

Welcome!! We have been having a wonderful time in the music room. Wednesday morning at 8am we have been warming up (it’s been quite chilly) and singing songs in preparation for our assembly in week 8. After many conversations, idea gathering and collaboration with other music professionals, we will launch our new school song! Pocket Universe Recording Studios and I have worked on the backing track and now we are getting ready for the choir to be recorded as the singers for this awesome song. All recording equipment will be brought to the school and the children will get to experience how a live recording is made professionally. We have had tremendous support from our P&C and school community in creating this. We are also gearing up for next term’s brilliant performance by the school band at their assembly in week 6 of next term and collaborating with Falls Road Primary School in creating a shared performance of Christmas Carols and a couple of other songs, both for the band and Choir. Soon, I will be testing students with a Musical Aptitude Test that will determine if they are eligible to learn an instrument through the Instrumental Music School Services (IMSS). We are very fortunate to be able to offer free lessons provided by the Education Department in Classical Guitar, Violin, Cello, Clarinet, Trumpet and Trombone. There is also our School Band Program that will accept people who are learning in a private capacity and offer after school classes in the music room for Violin and Trumpet/brass instruments. Any further questions regarding this process, please email me, [email protected]. Warm regards Priscilla Powell

Pre-Kindy Playgroup

The Pre-Kindy Playgroup boys and girls and their families have enjoyed being back at school this term! The lovely Mrs R has joined the group for Semester 2 and together they have focused on the popular fairy tales ‘The Gingerbread Man’, ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ and the ‘Three Little Pigs’. I wonder what story will be next? The Pre-Kindy Playgroup program is an excellent transition into our wonderful school. If you or someone you know maybe interested in attending the 2021 program please feel free to collect an ‘Expression of Interest’ form from the front office or contact the school 92912000.

Our school water tank is having a make over.

Kindy 1—Kanyana Incursion

Last Tuesday the Kindy 1 children were very excited to welcome Helen from Kanyana. Helen together with her team introduced us to some very special and delightful native Australian animals.

First we met Precious the Twany Frogmouth. The children loved watching her eat worms and we learnt that her feathers act as a very effective raincoat! Next we met Kora the Blue Tongue Lizard. We discovered that they have a third eye. It is not a seeing eye but a sensing eye. Next we met Mrs Brown the Stimson’s Python. She curled around her handler seeking warmth as it was a rather cold day! We loved meeting Noba the Woylie. This delightful creature poked her head out of her warm little nest when tempted by a banana. She clasped the banana in her claws and obviously enjoyed every bit of it. Finally, we met Elle the Echidna. Elle was enticed out of her cage by a bowl of special echidna porridge! We noticed her very long tongue as she slurped her way through the tasty dish. We discovered that the echidna lays a very small egg about a size of a 5 cent piece. If you look closely at the 5 cent piece, there is an echidna on it.

The children delighted in meeting these incredible creatures and we will enjoy reflecting on their visit to our kindy. A huge thank you to Helen and her team from Kanyana for their wonderful presentation at our Kindy. Cath de Saran
