Had ‘the talk’
yet?
As a parent, there’s a lot of ‘talks’. There’s the big one, of course. And then there’s the gambling one, the one you have
because many teens mistakenly think that betting is a normal part of the game. Help your kids understand the risks.

Celebrating our playersAFL Victoria’s awards season is in full swing, with the TAC Cup Best & Fairest night taking place last Sunday and VFL Best & Fairest night on this coming Monday. At the TAC Cup and TAC Cup Girls celebration, Sandringham Dragons midfielder Liam Stocker added his name to an illustrious recent list of Morrish Medal winners as the TAC Cup’s best and fairest player for 2018.
Stocker joins AFL young guns Clayton Oliver (2015 at Murray Bushrangers), Hugh McCluggage (2016 at GWV Rebels) and Jack Higgins (2017 at Oakleigh Chargers) on the Morrish Medal honour board, with Higgins making a memorable return to the stage this year to present Stocker with his award.
Similarly, last year’s joint TAC Cup Girls Best & Fairest winner Bridie Kennedy (ex-Dandenong Stingrays, now at Carlton AFL Women’s) returned to present 2018 joint-winners Nina Morrison (Geelong Falcons) and Madison Prespakis (Calder Cannons) with their awards.
We were also proud to have former TAC Cup players Matthew Lloyd (Western Jets), Justin Leppitsch (Dandenong Stingrays) and Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti (Gippsland Power) in attendance for a panel discussion.
Their presence was a reminder of how the TAC Cup has impacted in a lasting way upon the lives of over 14,000 young men and women across its 27-year history – something worth reflecting on as we enter a new era, with the Transport Accident Commission to change the focus of its partnership with us from our under-18 pathway to Victorian community football.
The VFL Best & Fairest night returns to Crown Palladium this week for a celebration of the finest individual performances in the Peter Jackson VFL and Swisse Wellness VFL Women’s in 2018.
We were delighted to announce during the week that the VFL Women’s best-and-fairest award will now be named the Lambert-Pearce Medal aft er two all-time champions of female football in Helen Lambert and Daisy Pearce.
Make sure to watch the live stream of the night on vfl.com.au to see who will follow in 2017 winner Katie Brennan’s footsteps as the 2018 Lambert-Pearce Medallist and which player will emulate last year’s J.J. Liston Trophy winner Jacob Townsend as this year’s VFL best and fairest.

RICHMOND vs ESSENDON – Saturday 12.40pm @ Stannards Stadium[LIVE on Channel 7 + listen on SEN+]
Winner to play: Casey Demons
2018 ENCOUNTERRd 14 @ Windy Hill: Richmond 13.11 (89) d Essendon 7.15 (57)
The Tigers were missing key VFL regulars like Anthony Miles, Corey Ellis and Jacob Townsend but their team defence held up well in blowy conditions, setting up this win with five first-term goals to one using the breeze.
FORM COMING INMinor premier Richmond (14-5) has lost three of its last four games aft er falling to Williamstown for the third time this season, by 25 points in a qualifying final last week. / Essendon (10-9) continued its season-saving three-match winning streak – following a six-game losing run – with a 34-point triumph over Collingwood in an elimination final.
KEY QUESTIONAre opposition teams finding their way through Richmond’s pressure? The Tigers finished the home-and-away season ranked first for inside-50s per game but ninth for disposals, relying on superior team defence to cause forward-half turnovers and then capitalise on the scoreboard. That hasn’t been happening over the last month though, with Richmond eff ectively breaking even in inside-50s in losses to Williamstown (twice) and Geelong but conceding a total of 18 more goals in those games. The Seagulls and Cats controlled possession against the Tigers and had the skill to pierce through their structures, but can the Bombers do the same?
KEY STATAs mentioned above, high-possessing opposition teams have been able to score well against Richmond thanks to quality ball-use. Essendon failed in that regard in Round 14 though, recording 46 more disposals and 14 more clearances than the Tigers but converting only seven goals from 52 inside-50s. If Bombers ruckman Sam Draper wins his battle with Ivan Soldo and allows Essendon playmakers like Kobe Mutch, Nick Hind and Aaron Heppell to drive the ball forward, they need the skill and composure to hit their targets inside 50.

Peter Jackson VFL preview – Semi FinalsThe 2018 Peter Jackson VFL ‘Love the Game’ Finals Series continues with beaten qualifying finalists Richmond and Geelong aiming to bounce back in semi finals against Essendon and the Box Hill Hawks respectively.

GEELONG vs BOX HILL HAWKS – Sunday 2.10pm @ Stannards Stadium[LIVE on Channel 7 + listen on SEN and 3WBC radio]
Winner to play: Williamstown
2018 ENCOUNTERRd 21 @ Box Hill City Oval: Box Hill Hawks 14.9 (93) d Geelong 10.12 (72)
The Cats led until early in the fourth quarter, aft er which Box Hill built a 10-point lead, then lost it and surged again to run away with victory – thwarting Geelong’s hopes of securing a home qualifying final in the process.
FORM COMING INGeelong (13-6) has suff ered two tough defeats in a row, at the hands of the Hawks in Round 21 and then the Casey Demons by 91 points in a qualifying final last week. / Box Hill (13-6) knocked off Casey and then the Cats in consecutive weeks before outlasting Port Melbourne by 11 points in a classic elimination final that went to extra time.
KEY QUESTIONHow will each of these teams recover from last week? Both sides might have spent the week pondering exactly what happened in the first week of finals – but for opposite reasons. Geelong had lost five matches in 2018 by a combined total of only 37 points before being blown away by the Demons, while the Hawks saved their season with a goal literally in the last seconds of play to force the Borough to extra time. 10 Cats recorded fewer than 10 disposals last week, but the resulting positive is they might be fresher than a Box Hill outfit backing up from eff ectively playing four and a half quarters.
KEY STATThese teams finished the home-and-away season as the VFL’s top two for disposals per game (with Geelong on top), but the Cats have lost their ability to dominate possession at just the wrong time of year. The Hawks recorded 31 more disposals and 40 more marks than Geelong in Round 21 with Anthony Brolic, Kieran Lovell and Brendan Whitecross racking up a stack of uncontested possessions, while the Cats won only 255 disposals against Casey (126 fewer than their season average) and just 117 uncontested possessions – perhaps the most damning stat in terms of their eff ort to run to space.

News
Finals Week 1 storylinesA dramatic first week of the 2018 Peter Jackson VFL ‘Love the Game’ Finals Series was highlighted by another memorable encounter between the Box Hill Hawks and Port Melbourne that went to extra time. The Hawks and Borough are renowned for producing
thrilling contests and Saturday’s elimination final
at Stannards Stadium was no diff erent. Trailing
by 18 points in time-on of the fourth quarter, Port
Melbourne piled on four goals in the space of six
minutes to take an unlikely six-point lead.
However, with under half a minute remaining in
regular play, Box Hill transitioned the ball from a
defensive-50 stoppage and it ended in the hands of
Oliver Hanrahan, who kicked the levelling major with
one second remaining on the clock. His Hawks then
broke Borough hearts with the only two goals of extra
time.
Meanwhile, Williamstown knocked off minor premier
Richmond despite four of the Swinburne Centre light
towers going out with four minutes and 47 seconds
remaining in the third term. That time was added to
the clock in the final stanza, as the Seagulls pulled
away to qualify for a preliminary final and ensure that
the Tigers (as an AFL standalone team) still haven’t
recorded a win against Williamstown since 1907.
In the weekend’s other games, Geelong had lost its
five matches in 2018 by a combined total of only
37 points before falling to the Casey Demons by 91
points in a qualifying final, and Essendon continued
its season-saving three-game winning streak with an
elimination-final victory over Collingwood.

V V
SEMI FINALCOLLINGWOOD (1st) vs HAWTHORN (2nd) – Saturday 10.15am @ Stannards Stadium
Winner advances to Grand Final
2018 ENCOUNTERRd 5 @ Box Hill City Oval: Collingwood 4.4 (28) d Hawthorn 3.3 (21)
FORM COMING INCollingwood (12-1-1) comfortably won its last two matches against the Southern Saints and then the Casey Demons aft er suff ering its only defeat of the season in Round 14 at the hands of the NT Thunder. / Hawthorn (12-2) has ridden a three-game winning streak to a top-two finish, beating fellow finalists NT and then the Geelong Cats in the last two rounds.
KEY QUESTIONWhich team will advance straight to the Grand Final? Though both sides will have a second chance if they lose this match, each is in prime position to seal a Grand Final berth at the first possible occasion. The Magpies have made only one slight misstep this season – that 10-point loss to the Thunder – while the Hawks have a lot of experience in closing out several tight games this year. With both teams fielding a number of experienced players and boasting an even spread of talent across the field, we could be in for another close encounter – similar to their clash in Round 5.
KEY STATAft er struggling with inaccuracy in front of goal earlier this year, Hawthorn has shaken off this habit in recent times. The Hawks kicked 6.5 to Geelong’s 3.7 in Round 16 and better used their forward-line opportunities, going inside 50 on one fewer occasion than the Cats. Hawthorn also kicked more goals than behinds in its win over NT a week earlier, having kicked more behinds than goals in 10 previous games this season
PLAYERS TO WATCHEliza Hynes (Collingwood): The former volleyballer has had a strong season as her team’s sole ruck following Emma King’s departure from the Magpies. 26-year-old Hynes had 36 hitouts and eight tackles against Casey in Round 16.
Rebecca Beeson (Hawthorn): The AFLW GWS Giants recruit has put together a number of strong performances this season, finishing with 22 disposals, five marks and two goals in the Hawks’ Round 16 win against Geelong.
ELIMINATION FINALNT THUNDER vs GEELONG CATS
Sunday 11.45am @ Stannards Stadium
Winner advances to Preliminary Final against loser of Collingwood vs Hawthorn
2018 ENCOUNTERRd 9 @ TIO Stadium, Darwin: NT Thunder 13.7 (85) d Geelong Cats 2.8 (20)
FORM COMING INThe Thunder (11-3) comes into this match off two weeks of rest aft er sitting out Round 16 with a bye. Their last game resulted in a 25-point loss to Hawthorn in Round 15. / Geelong (10-3-1) went down to the Hawks by 16 points in Round 16, following five straight wins against the Casey Demons (twice), the Southern Saints, Richmond and Essendon.
KEY QUESTIONCan the Cats compete in the middle and at stoppages? Geelong has been well beaten in the ruck since Round 13, with forward Kate Darby doing most of the ruck work in the absence of Erin Hoare. The Cats were still able to record wins over Casey and Essendon despite losing the head-to-head ruck contests, but with NT’s Jasmyn Hewett – who earlier this week finished runner-up in the Thunder’s best-and-fairest award – their likely ruck opponent at stoppages, Hoare’s return would be timely.
KEY STATNT will need to put more pressure on the opposition if it is to challenge for the premiership. In losing to Hawthorn in Round 16, the Thunder – who were more oft en second to the ball – failed to tackle more than the Hawks.
PLAYERS TO WATCHAngela Foley (NT Thunder): Foley won NT’s best-and-fairest award this week for her strong season as a major ball- and clearance-winner. The 29-year-old most recently finished with 21 disposals and a goal in the Round 15 loss to the Hawks.
Madeline Keryk (Geelong Cats): Keryk has consistently been one of Geelong’s best players since crossing from Carlton earlier in the season. The midfielder finished with 24 disposals and nine tackles in the Round 16 loss to Hawthorn.

MORRISH MEDAL
Sandringham Dragons midfielder Liam Stocker followed in the footsteps of Jack Higgins (2017 – Oakleigh Chargers), Hugh McCluggage (2016 – GWV Rebels) and Clayton Oliver (2015 – Murray Bushrangers) as recent winners of the Morrish Medal.
The 18-year-old Old Haileybury (VAFA) and East Sandringham (South Metro Junior FL) product polled 18 votes to finish two votes ahead of the chasing pack, aft er averaging 23 disposals and five tackles per game as well as kicking five goals in his 12 TAC Cup matches this season.
His triumph was Sandringham’s second Morrish Medal in the club’s 27-year history following Jackson Sketcher’s joint win with Dyson Heppell (Gippsland Power) in 2010.
Stocker was awarded three votes in four games and two votes in a further three appearances, missing matches in Rounds 5, 7, 8 and 14.
