V.I.A. structures - General information

Use the centerline dimensions from the layout drawing plan view to determine location of ceiling track centerlines. Several methods can be used to mark lines on the ceiling, including laser transit, pencil marks on tape, chalk lines.

See pages 9 through 18 for additional ceiling track information to determine cutting lengths for common ceiling track conditions.

Transfer the ceiling centerline to the floor by means of laser transits or plumb bob.

Make sure that the tape or lines are not visible after install is complete.

For the best results use a 5-point alignment self leveling laser to transfer lines, plumb, level and square to within 1/32 of an inch. The most accurate feature to reference, while leveling, is the vertical post system hole shown on page 21 & throughout various V.I.A. assembly directions.

TIP: Before cutting the ceiling track, consider locations of pre-punched holes to minimize the need for additional holes.

3. Use a saw to cut ceiling track when required. Remove all burrs with a file. Square cuts will insure best appearence. When routing power or communication, sheet metal shears can be used to cut a hole in the top of the ceiling track. Avoid cutting the side of the ceiling track because these cuts will be visible.

4. To create a tight fit when a corner ceiling track lacks structure, a wood block can be installed above the ceiling tile for reinforcement.

WHERE TO START INSTALLING STRUCTURE

Use the General Rule of 4-3-2.

Because it’s easier to adjust in two directions rather than 3 or 4, start with the largest junctions in any given layouts.

Using Figure 1 for an example:Start with the 4-way junction and work toward the 3-way junctions in all directions, then work toward the 2-way junctions.

Twist the vertical post until the brackets align with the ceiling track as shown (2b).(Pay attention to bracket configurations at the bottom of the post.)

3. Temporarily postion the post as vertical as possible. Adjust the leveler to apply enough tension to keep the post from coming out of the ceiling track.

NOTE: A partial height vertical post is attached to the intermediate rail with fasteners in a similar method not shown here.

CAUTION: Until vertical post is fastened to a structural horizontal rail it should be considered loose in the ceiling track and can fall down injuring people or damaging product.

4. Make sure the post extension is seated up into the ceiling track.

JUNCTION ASSEMBLIES

Junction assemblies are made up of vertical posts connected with junction blocks to make corner structure transitions. They contain many of the same features as vertical posts and sometimes needs to be reconfigured when attaching to other V.I.A. products. See vertical post assembly - Reconfigure for other V.I.A. products.

Vertical junction assemblies will have corresponding 8-hole intermediate horizontal rail mounting pattern (when present) even though not all locations call for horizontals. (Refer to vertical post assembly features page 21.)

Verifying each vertical has the same number and location of hole patterns will help to indicate that junctions were assembled correctly in the factory.

NOTE: See pages 35 & 36 for special junction configurations.

NOTE: If acoustic seal color change is required, see pages 37-38.

INTERMEDIATE HORIZONTAL INSTALLATION

1. Use the IRID label to determine location of intermediate horizontal assemblies. Refer to the layout drawing elevations to determine vertical locations & orientation of power/communication pass through.

2. Install the horizontal by rotating it into position as shown. One bracket will face down and the other up. They will align with the 8-hole pattern on the verticals as shown.

3. Secure by using four (4) (two per post) M6-1 x 17mm screws with a T30 torx drive bit (FEPF01).

4. Alternating bracket orientation will help to keep frames square and level.

3

NOTE: Some conditions require the use of a nut plate (shown). The nut plate is used when an intermediate horizontal is located next to certain junctions or mini ends that won’t allow driver access. Pay attention to the sequence of assembly, as the nut plate needs to be installed prior to door frames, mini ends & finished ends.

NOTE: When a intermediate horizontal is used over a transom high door, flip one intermediate bracket and orient the rail with both brackets facing up and away from the door frame opening.

CHANGING ACOUSTIC SEALS

FULL HEIGHT VERTICALPOST SHOWN

ACOUSTIC SEAL

IRID LABEL

COLOR CAP (TAPE)

V.I.A. components are factory made with one of three customer specified color acoustic seals. Sometimes the layout requires a different color to be applied in the field to one side. Refer to elevation drawings to determine seal color.

Acoustic seals are best replaced prior to constructing frame components. (Vertical Posts, Junctions & Structural Horizontals)

1. For vertical posts and junctions, locate the correct component by IRID label for constructing. Determine if any reconfiguring is required (see page 22).

2. Once vertical post orientation is determined, remove the acoustic seal from the side which requires changing.

3. Use a heavy duty utility shear to cut replacement seal to the same length as the one being replaced. Cut the ends as straight as possible.

4. With the removed seal end as a guide, use a sharp knife to trim away the bulbs on one end of the seal to match the seal being replaced.

5. Apply the new color cap (tape) to the top of the vertical post over the old color cap (tape). (Skip this step for partial height verticals)

6. Replace the seal using the opposite side seal as a guide for placement (6a). Press seal into grooves until it seats flush and taunt to the vertical post (6b).

CHANGING ACOUSTIC SEALS (cont.)

7. For structural horizontals top and bottom. Locate the correct component by IRID label for area constructing. Determine if there are any electrical pass through requirements per elevation drawings.

8. Remove the acoustic seal from the side which requires changing.

9. Use a heavy duty utility shear to cut replacement seal to the same length as the one being replaced. Cut the ends as straight as possible.

10. Remove the tape release paper and replace the seal using the opposite side seal as a guide for placement.

NOTE: Intermediate horizontal seals can be replaced after assembled to frame. Remove and replace with correct color per elevation drawings. Cut replacement seal to the same length as the one removed and apply like the vertical seal.
