I am delighted this year to be hosting the sixth Vice-Chancellor’s Staff Awards ceremony. Thank you for joining me this evening to celebrate the achievements of staff.

Our staff and students are the key to Bournemouth University’s success, and it is important to recognise and celebrate those who make a real difference here at BU. The Vice-Chancellor’s Staff Awards provide an opportunity for us to pause and reflect on these contributions. The awards are open to any member of BU staff, staff affiliated to BU or staff in Partner Institutions who support delivery of the staff and student experience.

At the Vice-Chancellor’s Staff Awards ceremony, we also recognise promotions to Professor, staff achieving qualifications relevant to their roles and staff with long service.

Tonight we will also be celebrating with the Students’ Union as they join with us to recognise the staff who have been most valued by their students and announce their ‘Most Outstandingly Brilliant!’ Gold Award winner.

I am delighted to be able to recognise and celebrate the achievements of all of the shortlisted candidates, and I am sure that you will join me in congratulating our award winners tonight on what I am sure will be a memorable occasion.

Professor Hamid Bouchachia Professor of Design, Engineering and Computing, Faculty of Science & Technology

Professor Hamid Bouchachia leads the Machine Intelligence Research Group and is currently REF2021 leader for the Computer Science and Informatics unit. Hamid has over 20 years teaching experience across a range of subjects in computer science, working in many universities before joining BU. Hamid’s research

mainly surrounds Data Analytics and Knowledge Engineering, particularly Machine Learning, Data Mining, Ambient Intelligence and Telecare, and has been used for a large spectrum of innovative applications. Hamid has published more than 115 papers in international journals and conferences, edited dozens of volumes and special issues. He founded the International Conference on Adaptive and Intelligent Systems (ICAIS), has served as an associate editor for numerous international conferences and journals respectively and acts as member of various Technical Committees of IEEE Societies.

Professor Debbie Holley Professor of Learning Innovation, Centre for Excellence in Learning

Professor Debbie Holley is Deputy Head of the Centre for Excellence for Learning. Joining academia from industry, she quickly realised that students on her transport courses, with their patterns of shift working, had very limited opportunities to attend regular classes. These difficulties, not unique and indeed shared

with other students, led to Debbie’s research interests in overcoming challenges/barriers faced by students seeking to access learning outside the formal classroom. Debbie is committed to the use of open educational resources, and sees the sharing of these resources as making a significant difference to overcoming the educational digital divide through supporting and modelling best practice in availability, accessibility and acceptability.


Professor Zulfiqar Khan Professor of Design, Engineering and Computing, Faculty of Science & Technology

Zulfiqar has developed multidisciplinary research in collaboration with major international industrial and HEI partners, some of which are: Schaeffler, Ministry of Defence, Future Energy Source Ltd, NASA Materials & Corrosion Control Branch, BAE Systems, Analatom and National University of Sciences & Technology

Pakistan. Zulfiqar’s research is a direct response to the need for durability and reliability design within clean energy technologies and complex interacting systems applications. He has been championing research informed education which has led to Scopus indexed journal publications, Scopus indexed international conference publications and one invited book chapter by Springer with UG students as co-creation/production. He is a member of the BU Environmental Strategy Group (ESG), Technical Editor of Tribology & Lubrication Technology USA, Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, a Chartered Engineer, Senior Fellow of HEA and Chair of the Surface Engineering Committee STLE USA. Zulfiqar also leads the accreditation of the IMechE Further Learning programme.

Professor Mark Maltby Professor of Archaeology, Faculty of Science and Technology

Professor Mark Maltby joined Bournemouth University in 1990, having previously been a researcher at the Universities of Sheffield and Southampton. His principal research interests lie in the field of zooarchaeology. He has led or contributed to a large numbers of research projects, studying animal bone assemblages on sites dating from the Neolithic period onwards, both in Britain

and in continental Europe, as far afield as Russia and Malta. He has over 100 publications to his name. Mark has particular interests in the history of butchery and how zooarchaeology can be incorporated into studies of Roman and medieval towns. He is currently leading a team of over 20 researchers from six universities on an AHRC-funded inter-disciplinary project on Human and Chicken Interactions. He maintains close links with many archaeological units and museums in Britain and was instrumental in the creation of the MSc in Osteoarchaeology at BU.


Professor Dinusha Mendis Professor of Intellectual Property Law, Faculty of Media & Communication

Dinusha Mendis specialises in intellectual property law; in particular, copyright law and challenges to Intellectual Property (IP) rights as a result of Emerging Technologies, such as 3D Printing. She is the author of many peer-reviewed academic articles exploring the impact of technology on copyright law and

authored one of the first peer-reviewed articles on the IP implications of 3D printing which has been cited nationally and internationally.

Dinusha has conducted extensive research in the areas of copyright and emerging technologies and has been invited to speak on these topics at the European Parliament, UK Intellectual Property Office, European Intellectual Property Office, academic institutions (UK and aboard), and for blue-chip companies such as Virgin, BBC, Walt Disney, BMW, HSBC, BAE Systems amongst others.

She is Co-Director of the Centre for Intellectual Property Policy and Management (CIPPM) at Bournemouth University and during 2015 was a Visiting Scholar at Stanford Law School, University of Stanford California.

Professor Jane Murphy Professor of Nutrition, Faculty of Health & Social Sciences

Jane is a Registered Nutritionist and Dietitian and has led key developments in nutrition education at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels at BU. She is committed to advancing the professional evidence-based practice of nutritionists. Jane’s research addresses key nutritional problems in older people that impact upon health and wellbeing especially undernutrition and

the complex problems faced by people living with dementia. She has also undertaken work in nutrition and cancer. Jane co-leads the BU Dementia Institute and led a major research project to understand nutrition in dementia care to enable new research informed education and training. This is already making a difference to the way in which nutritional care is delivered by carers and staff and for the wellbeing of people living with dementia. She has a seconded role as Clinical Lead for the Nutrition in Older People Programme – Wessex Academic Health Sciences Network, to advise and support funded research and implementation projects working in collaboration with NHS and social care.


Professor Jan Wiener Professor of Psychology, Faculty of Science & Technology

Professor Jan Wiener graduated from the University of Würzburg in Germany in 2000 with a degree in Biology, and from the University of Tübingen in Germany in 2004 with a PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience. He has worked at the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybenetics, Germany (2004-2006), the French National Centre for Scientific Research in Paris, France (2006-2008), the

University of Freiburg (2008-2009), and joined Bournemouth University in October 2009. In his research, Jan investigates the psychological mechanisms underlying navigation and wayfinding behaviour. He is particularly interested in understanding how typical and atypical ageing affect our navigation abilities and how environments need to be designed to compensate for age-related declines in orientation and wayfinding skills. In order to address these issues, Jan makes use of different methodological approaches including behavioural navigation experiments, virtual reality techniques, eye-tracking and cognitive modelling.

This could have been done through one or more of the following:

• By making a significant contribution to an excellent staff or student experience that has so far gone unrecognised

• By making a substantial contribution to the early stages of an initiative that went on to become very significant

• By being an influential role model to their colleagues by demonstrating their skills and/or attributes in providing an excellent staff or student experience

• By routinely providing a consistently excellent service to staff or students that ‘oils the wheels’ of the organisation, but that might otherwise go unnoticed

Colleagues are always surprised that Anna consistently remembers their orders and also regularly provides suggestions, inspiring people to try something new. Her attitude is valued by colleagues who recognise the very positive impact she has on both staff and students every day and at events such as Open Days.


Ally Hanks

Ally is open, honest and positive and demonstrates willingness and effort to answer a range of queries from students and staff. Staff and students feel comfortable to speak openly with Ally due to her trustworthiness, professionalism and good listening skills. Her work with the VP Lansdowne resulted in the creation of both the BoHo Lounge and Students’ Lounge in Bournemouth House, enhancing the student experience. Ally has also been heavily involved in supporting and encouraging students running the Freshers’ Fair in Bournemouth House and events for international students. Her colleagues feel she is a positive role model for everyone she comes into contact with.

Dr Nitin Naik Associate Professor and Head Cyber Security, IT Wing Defence School of Communications and Information Systems

Dr Naik is an internationally recognised teacher and researcher and develops innovative course materials and teaching methods. He maintains strong relationships with many international universities and has formed a new international partnership with Northeastern University (NEU), China, teaching two modules and achieving a 100% pass rate despite language barriers. Nitin’s internationally recognised research activities are valued by colleagues and he was recently awarded Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy. He regularly introduces and develops course materials and has devised innovative teaching methods, including Non-Digital Game-Based Learning and a Dual PowerPoint Presentation (DPP) method. Nitin’s colleagues recognise his influential teaching and view him as a role model for students.

Neil Bottomley

Tim Galling, Learning Technologist (Systems), Academic Services

Neil has developed systems which provide integration between Bournemouth University’s Virtual Learning Environment, myBU and other key IT systems, including the Student Record System and CoreHR. The Virtual Learning Environment Data Management System, originally written by Neil, has been crucial in ensuring important data is transferred to myBU, which has enhanced the student experience and is used by a wide range of staff across BU. He works collaboratively to build and execute requirements and enhancements which have removed additional handling and time-intensive administrative tasks. Neil’s colleagues value his skills and expertise and ability to accommodate the needs of many stakeholders.


Rob Bowra Programme Management Office Principal Project Manager, Programme Management Office

Rob has managed with professionalism, integrity, intelligence, enthusiasm and humour, showing genuine care for both project outcomes and colleague welfare. He is unfazed by the enormity of a challenge and professionally deals with setbacks and complications. A ‘go to’ point of contact with an extensive knowledge of project details, Rob is always approachable, receptive and considered. He has built a skilled and dedicated team who are encouraged to share and who strive to deliver the best possible solutions to stakeholders through service excellence. Rob’s calm and measured approach is recognised by his team who admire and appreciate him as a role model.

Louise provides an outstanding, personal service for staff and students and handles challenges with a calm and professional approach. Her service for students has included personally collecting and arranging binding of a thesis for a very ill student, and finding funding for a student in financial difficulty due to bereavement. This will enhance Bournemouth University’s profile with prospective students and significantly increasing the employability of graduates. Spencer shows innovation in providing students with opportunities to network with local business, raising BU’s profile within the community and expanding the department’s professional network.


Dr Mel Hughes Senior Academic in Social Work, Faculty of Health & Social Sciences

Mel has worked to raise the profile and develop the work of the Carer and Service User Partnership (CSUP) across Bournemouth University, other Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and in the wider community. She produced the CSUP 2015 Strategy, hosted the first CSUP conference with representation from 28 HEIs. Mel has ensured that involvement of service users and carers in Nursing and Midwifery Council and Health and Care Professions Council programmes is embedded in every stage of the student journey, exceptional work which has been recognised in the NMC monitoring review this year. Mel has launched many collaborative initiatives demonstrating Fusion such as the ‘Parents Story project’, the play ‘Score’ and a ‘Community Placement’ for social work students.

Colin Merrett

Colin has made a consistent, tireless contribution to the success and reputation of the BA Marketing Communications degree as Programme Leader which has enhanced student experience, achieving high NSS scores for the past five years. He inspires strong student links with the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM), including the introduction of the CIM’s Graduate Gateway programme and the tenth anniversary of the Mike Warne lecture. Colin has been a driving force in the success of BU’s Marketing Society, winner of Best Society in 2016. Colin’s work is evidenced in the number of programme re-validations, graduate prize winners and the introduction of the first joint-Faculty degree.

Dr Gerdau-Radonic has developed globalisation activities and promoted globalisation as a key part of Fusion at Bournemouth University. She recently developed a partnership with the University of Split, Croatia and has identified opportunities for their collections to be used for BU postgraduate students’ dissertations. A number of undergraduate students recently visited the University of Split, accessing collections and experiences not available in the UK with potential exchange opportunities for BU staff and students. She recently organised student placements to Peru, the Brussels Museum of Natural Sciences and the University of Split. Karina also recently begun the role of Global Engagement Lead within her Faculty and her colleagues value her vision and role as an ambassador for GlobalBU.

Faculty of Science & Technology

The Global Festival of Learning Administration Team created and delivered a series of workshops and seminars for partners in China and Malaysia as part of Bournemouth University’s Festival of Learning. Cross-institutional and collaborative working addressed all aspects of event logistics and content creation in the first overseas BU event of this nature, attracting over 600 delegates. Embracing co-creation, unique and interesting content was created for the events with students helping to design, deliver and support sessions. A focus on these regions impacted and created a platform for future collaborations and partners emphasised that Festival of Learning China was a clear expression of our shared vision.

Dr Chindu Sreedharan Senior Academic in Journalism and Communication, Faculty of Media & Communication

Professor Guy Starkey, Associate Dean Global Engagement, Faculty of Media & Communication

Dr Sreedharan has delivered high-profile projects that impact society and benefit Bournemouth University staff and students. Chindu became Principal Investigator on the India Hub of Practice this year, and his involvement with the Destination India project saw BU students visit Symbiosis International University. He also led the Aftershock Nepal project, collaborating with staff and students at four universities across three nations. Chindu was recently shortlisted for the 4th British Indian Awards for his services to education. Chindu’s colleagues regard him as a global engagement champion due to his pioneering efforts and for constant creativity in developing innovative, inspirational projects.


Collaborative Team Award This Award recognises staff who support each other and work together in a co-ordinated way to significantly enhance the experience of others and have made a significant contribution to making BU an excellent place to work and/or study. The ‘team’ can be a structural or geographical team, or a team that is made up of staff from across the institution who have been working together to achieve a common goal. The team could be an academic team, professional and support staff team, affiliated staff team, or a cross-functional team made up of two or more of these groups.

Business Studies Programme Coordinators

The Business Studies Programme Coordinators have transformed the Business Studies degree programme, the largest at BU, improving student satisfaction results and creating a happier and more engaged collaborative team. Their commitment to service excellence is demonstrated through a willingness to share ideas and approaches that enhance the student experience and encourage continuous improvement, including post-results counselling and induction design. A consistent approach to counselling has resulted in students reflecting critically on their results and providing valuable ‘feed forward’ advice, whilst a refreshed approach to induction has engaged and inspired students. Significant external stakeholder engagement has increased networking opportunities and bespoke sessions are valued by students.


Faculty of Management Programmes Administration Team

The Faculty of Management Programmes Administration Team has successfully worked as one collaborative and harmonised team following the integration and workload rationalisation of two Programme Administration teams. They have supported each other and worked in a co-ordinated

way to review processes, share good practice and identify where improvements can be made. Through the identification of individual strengths, tasks have been distributed more effectively and there is a culture of continuous improvement, enhancing the service provided to academic staff and students. Academic staff have been keen to

show their gratitude and appreciation of the excellent service that the team continue to provide, notwithstanding that this has been achieved during particularly busy periods of the academic year and whilst the Student Journey Project was underway.

RKEO Funding Development Team – Funding Development Officers

The RKEO Funding Development Officers have supported and learned from one another whilst providing a high quality service to academic colleagues. They are self-sufficient but also work in a co-ordinated manner and take responsibility, ensuring that work is achieved in a timely manner. The team have developed outstanding knowledge and skills in their roles, allowing them to provide appropriate advice and guidance to facilitate the bidding process for academics. This has positively impacted Bournemouth University’s potential to increase the amount of external funding acquired, supporting and enabling colleagues to deliver BU2018.

Tracey has lead a variety of Estates projects to enhance the ability of the department to deliver on key initiatives. She led a project to redesign the Estates office in Studland House, enabling the co-location of the Procurement team, showcasing modern working solutions within a limited footprint and greatly enhancing the office environment with a more efficient ratio of space per person. This has inspired colleagues in the Sir Michael Cobham Library team to investigate their own activity-based working model and this is being taken forward in a BU-funded feasibility study. Tracey also played a key role in the Fusion Building Project Board, working closely with Estates colleagues and internal and external stakeholders to maximise the potential and efficiency of the teaching spaces. Her colleagues recognise her consistent display of responsibility, creativity and efficiency.

Examples include placing BU research on the front page of The Times, launching BU’s Expert Directory, interviewing alumni in China and leading communications for Bournemouth’s BFX Festival. 2015 was a record-breaking year for BU media coverage; Nathaniel’s team won high-profile industry awards, building their reputation and showcasing BU’s innovative communications. He shares his knowledge and expertise, using cutting-edge technology to deliver social media and media engagement workshops. Nathaniel’s team recognise him to be inspirational and supportive with infectious enthusiasm.

Richard Wintrip Travel Plan Co-Ordinator, Estates

Richard works to influence staff and students to travel more sustainably through the Travel Plan. The latest Travel Survey showed a 12% reduction in staff travelling on their own to work and bus services saw an 18% increase in passengers, with nearly 1M travelling by bus during 2015/16. Richard led the re-tender of the 10-year bus contract, worth £1.2M per annum, further enhancing the service. He has introduced a wide range of initiatives including Dr Bike, Norwegian Walking, car sharing and bus taster tickets, reducing pollution and carbon emissions and contributing to staff health and wellbeing. Richard’s work has won awards for Bournemouth University and his colleagues value his professionalism, integrity, positivity and pragmatism.

Dr Carol Clark, Head of Department - Human Science & Public Health, Faculty of Health & Social Sciences

Professor Hundley demonstrates strategic, transformational leadership with a particular focus on research and knowledge exchange. She secured £260,000 funding in 2015/16, published 8 peer-reviewed publications and is also a sought after peer reviewer, external examiner, international speaker and adviser for the World Health Organisation. Vanora makes a positive impact as a role model by supporting colleagues and acting as a mentor for early career researchers. Her Faculty have seen an increase in the percentage of Academic Staff with doctorates to over 50% and she has found creative ways to demonstrate the importance of them updating their BRIAN profiles. Vanora oversaw the Red, Amber, Green (RAG) system for reviewing student progress, which has enabled teams to bring the majority of students back on target throughout their degree programme.

Simon Thomas Senior Academic in HRM & Personal Development, Faculty of Management

Simon demonstrates unwavering commitment to the employability and industry engagement strategy at BU over many years. His active promotion of student employability is evident in his development of the Student Consultancy Project, which now provides opportunities for students to express their employability skills and has resulted in many students being offered graduate roles upon leaving BU. Simon is also an advocate for fostering effective relationships between education and industry, generating valuable income for BU and bolstering student placements and graduate prospects.
