AS A yOUNG ARTIST, I began with creating illustrations and artworks with traditional media, such as pencil, pen, colored pencils, and oil pastels.
M works in traditional media were mainl caricatures, where m drawing stle evolved from simple Western stles to a Japanese manga-inspired
stle. Eventuall, I came up with m own stle, taking features from both stles. I was also exposed to other media such as oil and watercolor
painting, with training in art workshops. Now, I have been able to incorporate m drawing stle using digital media such as vector art.
Before, m artworks were created for personal use onl, or as an escape from the sad and stressful realities that I faced ever da. The ma have
also been representation of an idealized world that I envisioned.
As I matured and entered formal training as a Fine Arts major, I gained more interest in themes related to Philippine histor, art and architecture
urban planning and heritage conservation. Therefore m works would include Philippine or historical graphic elements. M exposure to relevant
issues in the world toda also helped, through m involvement in The GUIDON as a member of the Graphic Design staff and eventuall as
Graphic Design Editor. Providing design solutions for the common people was also one important lesson I learned in m majors, and through
Artiller, the newl-formed Information Design organization. From time to time, m works would include themes about pop culture and realities
that our generation faces.
Now, m works were less about idealization and personal satisfaction, but rather more about sharing an idea or message to an audience through
visual media and providing them design solutions that are applicable to the real world. Instead of concocting was and means to escape the
problems of the world, wh dont we instead put our energies in understanding the problems, finding references, and coming up with real
solutions?

ZOOMING IN to the lives ofAteneo students and zooming outto the bigger picture that wasthe theme of this years FreshmenOrientation Seminar (OrSem)according to OrSem CommitteeHead Justin Henry Ng.
This years OrSem, entitledZOOM was held on June 9 to11 at the College Covered Courts.ZOOM featured group dynamicsessions, campus tours, courseand departmental talks, and liveperformances of bands during theOrSem Night.
School nights were also heldduring days one and two with thehelp of the Sanggunian.
The OrSem is the Ateneostraditional way of welcoming
freshmen to the Loyola Schools.
Soc vcNg said that initially, this years
OrSem was titled In Focus but theadministration wanted a name thathad social relevance.
The admin did not like thisidea [In Focus] that much becauseit [might seem like] the focus ofcollege life was the OrSem, whichshould not be since this is simplythe start, OrSem Deputy MaraKarmela Duterte said.
Ng said that zooming in meantfreshmen looking into their personalmatters such as xing their classschedules, while zooming out
meant looking at how ofces anddepartments in Ateneo work.
Talk and Tours (TnT) HeadAldrich Martin Chung said OrSemstheme this year is very interesting.
The school is focusing on thedifferent aspects of a freshmanslife. The symbolism is good becauseit shows [that] the university caresfor the diverse aspects of collegelife both in the micro and macrolevel.
Chgs mdChung said that this year, there
is the challenge of [bringing] backthe real OrSem feeling after lastyears OrSem was moved due tomeasures to protect the studentsfrom A(H1N1).
As such, one of the biggestchanges in this years OrSem isthe schedule. Comparing it the
experience of the freshies last year,of course for their point of view,OrSem is different since it is back

AS THE curtain-raiser of the 27thBuklod Atenista, the raticationof the Ateneo Youth Agenda (AYA)was the rst task, in the long listof obligations, to be completed bythe student councils of the ve
Ateneo universities nationwideas a congress. For these studentcouncils, it is imperative that theirmissionthrough AYAis clear.
AYA is a common agenda amongthe ve Ateneo universities createdto guide them in their engagementwith the local and nationalgovernment.
Aware that the elections wereapproaching, these student councilswanted to compose an Ateneo youthconstitution that would provide thewinning candidates suggestionsregarding the issues that requirenecessary attention.
Thus, the conceptualization ofAYA began on October 31 of lastschool year at the 26th Buklod
Atenista. To come up with a common
agenda, concern areas were brought
up by the congress and each ofthe ve Ateneo universities wereassigned two or three issues towork on before the Buklod Atenista
Youth Agenda (Bayan) conferenceon January 16 to 18.
However , t h i s remainedunfinished until its completionand ratication on May 26, at the27th Buklod Atenista.
The Sanggunian, along with theother participating student councilsof Buklod Atenista, is hoping thatthrough AYA, the Ateneo youthcould make a difference andcontribute to achieving the dreamof a better Philippines.
The five Ateneo universitiesinclude Ateneo de Manila, Ateneode Zamboanga, Ateneo de Davao,Xavier University Ateneo deCagayan (XU), and Ateneo deNaga.

THE ATENEO de ManilaUniversity once again showedwhat Magis means with its riseof ranks at the Times HigherEducation-Quacquarelli Symonds
Asian University Rankings thisyear.
Ateneo is now in 58th placein Asia and ranked rst amongPhilippine universities. This is animprovement from 2009, where
Ateneo was 84th in Asia and thirdin the country.
Loyola Schools Vice President(VP) John Paul Vergara said thatthey are glad that the Ateneo
improved its position in therankings and placed well relativeto other Philippine universities. However, we stress that we havealways viewed these rankings with
caution as the results are verydependent on the methodologiesused, he said.
I reiterate what Fr. Nebres hasalways mentioned regardless ofhow well we place: rankings areimportant because they measurehow the world perceives us, but wehave to reect on these perceptionsand measures within our own viewof our vision and mission, added
Vergara.Sanggunian President Rob Roque
said this is very good news for thecommunity.
It is a testament to the consistencyof growth in Ateneo. The studentgovernment is happy with the[administration]s consistency in
its leadership despite the transitionmode we had from the VPs positionsand the upcoming transitions. Thisis really a reason to celebrate, hesaid.
Hghghs o h Vergara said that the Junior
Term Abroad Program and otherinternational linkages contributedto Ateneos good performance in theinternationalization component.
The methodology used by QSdepends signicantly on the numberof inbound and outbound studentexchanges as well as on how otheruniversities view us (academicpeer review), said Vergara. Ourinternationalization efforts haveobviously affected these indicatorsin a very positive way.
According to School of Science andEngineering Dean Fabian Dayrit, internal feedbackfeedback fromthe schools employeesalso
contributed greatly to our currentranking.

STUDENT LEADERS are not theonly ones who have to get involvedto make a better Philippinesreligious orgs and campuspublications can also take part inimproving the country.
This was the thrust of the 27thBuklod Atenista, held from May 26to 29. The Ateneo de Manila campusserved as the host for this year.
Buklod Atenista is the umbrellaorganization of the ve AteneouniversitiesAteneo de Manila,
Ateneo de Zamboanga (ADZU),Ateneo de Davao, Xavier University Ateneo de Cagayan and Ateneode Naga.
We come together every year, we
talk about particular issues for theyear and possibly map out a wayto work together for the comingyear, Sanggunian President RobRoque said.
no po cd sssoFor the 27th Buklod Atenista,
the theme was Engaging Ateneansfor a Better Philippines. BuklodSecretary-General Gio Alejo saidthat for this year, they wanted tochange Buklod to more than justreporting what has been happeningin each campus.
[Instead] of it being just a report
card session, [we planned] it tobe the driving force behind theactivities that all student councils

Walkthis

Housing has been a problemsince Marcos t ime, aproblem wrought from
poverty and draws poverty as well. However it may be rooted to orgives fruit to poverty, I cant helpbut feel personally attached to theissue. It is unfair, unreasonable, and dehumanizing to live with thefear of waking up to see no more ofthe walls which housed a life.
Now, were a little morewatchful of our Freudian slips, frequently conscious of our less-than-intellectual moments, orsilently editing the possiblegrammatical lapses. Because we
just might be Overheard.
Did y har abt?Indeed, no class now is ever
complete without someone hintingabout the prospect of posting their
teachers or classmates commentsthat made everyone laugh.Overheard na yan! Overheard!is a mantra that Ateneans now livevicariously by.
The nonstop thread of quotablequotes and funny anecdotes mainlycapitalizes on a wide array ofunintentional, raw, and candidsound bites and antics heard andseen all over campus. Overheardis the unofcial Atenean soundingboard, providing a pick-me-up forthose days when school just seemsso dull.
From notable theology professorslambasting rival universities, to ahistory teachers disclaimer aboutstudents getting an automatic A
just by taking their shirts off, toeven the quintessential Ateneanacronym, AMDG (Ang Matulog DiGa-graduate)everyones talkingOverheard.
Migoy says he wasnt expectingfor the group, now over 13,000members strong, to become thisviral. I wanted a lot of people to j oinbut didnt expect the membershipgrowth to be that exponentially
fast, he says. It was pleasantlysurprising.
Fr r wrd t yrsCrowd favorites include anecdotes
from Fr. Adolfo Dacanay, and Fr.Roque Ferriols, and others thatcurrent students may not haveeven seen in campus, yet have beenacquainted with through the onlinegroup. Overheards wall is a comicalsplendor, time machine, and inside
joke all rolled into one. Some Ateneans who graduated
years ago even talked about beingunder the chemist Fr. Schmitt whois known to present-day Ateneansas a building!says Migoy.
More than just a feed, Overheardis also a two-way vehicle oftranscending time. Through thesebrief narratives, Overheard bridgesthe gap between the past and thepresent.
The group became an onlinespace for alumni homecoming, saysMigoy. It has a lot to do with thenotion of ugnayan (connectivity), ofcelebrating a common culture andtradition that binds us together.
Junior Aisa de la Cruz, a consistentcontributor to Overheards wall, saysshe nds delight in others relatingto her entries. I get to communicatewith many other Ateneans that Idont know personally, she says.[It] increases my network a bit.
Its another effort of the Atenean
to create a public sphere. At thesame time, it is also a form of socialcontrol, adds sociology professorEmma Porio, Ph.D., pertaining tothe teachers being discussed in the
group. I think thats where theurban legends start.
Porio, clearly aware of heroccasional presence on the feed, says Overheard fosters the chismis(gossip) culture. It only becomesunproductive and healthy whenthe stories stop being factual andobjective.
The varying perspectives of theposts also contribute in makingOverheard rise to a league of itsown. The stories need not to beverbalized down the patits nolonger a question of whether it isfact or ction, says Ariel Diccion,a Filipino instructor.
The bigger issue here is thatAteneans are opening themselvesup to the worldcreating an online(and public) demonstration of thedaily Ateneo life. The Outsidersare not allowed sign doesnt really
restrict anyone whos not Ateneanfrom reading the page.
Dbnking th ythThis transparency, so to speak,
allows for the Atenean communityto prove itselfwe dont always tinto the stereotype. [Overheardnarratives] are not the grand, sesquicentennial narratives of how
Ateneo should be, Diccion says.Instead, he likened Overheard
to trickster tales, in a way that itshows the folly of higher authorities, rocking the pedestal by which theyare on. At the end of the day, it isnarrowing down the hodgepodge, away from all the pomp andcircumstance, into something morebasic and genuine.
Daily accounts of how studentsshotgun their way through theiralgebra and accounting midterms, successfully talk their way outof trouble, experience literallyand guratively fail and FMLmoments, and even those downrightI cant believe I just said/did thatsituationsall of them scream ofhumanity and accessibility.
Associate professor DidithRodrigo says, [By posting onOverheard], it shows that we know

TERRY* is a member of the AteneoCadet Corps. He undergoes intensephysical training, which leaves himdrained and sometimes bruisedafterwards. After studying forschool, he studies the basics ofmilitary science. He is loyal not onlyto his family and friends but alsoto the Corps chain of command.Besides making time for hisbarkada and family, he also allotstime for the cadet corps.
He admits that he has becomejaded at the current state of thecadet corps. Yet he chooses tostay, despite the low morale, badreputation, and lack of manpowerand equipment for his training hehas to go through as a cadet.
As the cadet corps continues
passing on its traditions, troublescontinue to plague Ateneos residentmilitary unit. Real to the cadets, these difculties remain invisibleto the community at large.
Strngth in nmbrs?
With only 88 cadets out of therequired 350, Ateneos cadet corpsfails in the numbers, according toRA 9163, or the National Service
Training Program (NSTP) Act of2001.
The law says 350 is a requiredminimum number of cadets for aReserve Ofcer Training Corps(ROTC) unit to be recognized.
The Act, however, provides acontingency measure if units do notmeet the minimum requirement.Schools that lack students inboth ROTC and other NSTPcomponentsLiteracy TrainingService and Civic Welfare TrainingService (CWTS)are allowed tocross-enroll their students intoother schools.
Ateneos cadet corps last yearhad 88 cadets, with 49 cadetscoming from Ateneo, and 39 cadetscross-enrolling from nearby ClaretSchool of Quezon City. Combined, the Cadet Corps is still 262 short of
the required number mandated bylaw. While this is a clear breach oflaw, implementation has been weakand those who dont conform areneither penalized nor reprimanded.
Cadet Major Gil Anthony Aquino,1st Class, Ateneo Cadet CorpsCommander, says efforts have beenmade to increase awareness andinterest in ROTC.
Just this March, the corps tried to
boost its numbers through its ROTCWeek, titled Invictus. Outdooractivities such as wall-climbingand paintball were opened for allstudents.
The primary concern for us isto increase the number as much aspossible, not necessarily to reach aminimum, says Aquino.
Terry says that the small
membership is a sign of how thecorps is doing. Nobody wants to join the ROTC and thats a bigproblem, says Terry.
Cadts brdnMarie*, for her part, is vocal
about her enjoyment with the corps.Nonetheless, she adds that it wouldmuch better for cadets if uniformsand equipment such as dummy bassP2
ries, swords and medic kits wereprovided for.
Medic requests often come andits unfortunate that the medicinesand tools [the corps has] areinadequate to treat all cases, shesays.
These difculties in expenses areechoed by junior Frederick Lim,
a former Air Police cadet. While
regular cadets may not have largeadditional expenses to bear, SpecialFlights and Cadet Ofcers, bothof which take specialized courses, have a different story.
A Special Flight cadet has to shellout about P10,000 in addition tothe NSTP fee in the tuition. Theadditional costs cover the fatiguesand other uniform add-ons andaccessories they require. The gala
uniform demands the most expenseas it costs about P7,000.
Aquino claries that the expensesare considered a part of theadditional responsibilities of theSpecial Flight and Cadet Ofcers.
Although free uniforms andequipment are provided for cadetstaking Advanced ROTC offered bythe Air Force, not many Ateneansparticipate in the advanced programdue to academic conicts.
Whether one trains to becomea cadet ofcer or a Special Flightcadet, he or she is never forced todo anything he or she doesnt wantto do. One can resign from trainingor from being a Cadet Ofcer ora Special Flight cadet anytime,
Aquino says.
A strng Navy
The Ateneo Cadet Corps formallyoperates under the wing of thePhilippine Air Force, while otheruniversities trace their militaryafliations to the Armed Forcesother branches. The DLSU ROTCoperates under the Marine Corpsof the Philippine Navy.
Unlike the Ateneo Cadet Corps,

One morning in December the steamer Tabo was laboriously
ascending the tortuous course of the Pasig, carrying a large
crowd of passengers toward the province of La Laguna. She was
a heavily built steamer, almost round, like the tab from which she derived
her name, quite dirty in spite of her pretensions to whiteness, majestic andgrave from her leisurely motion. Altogether, she was held in great affection
in that region, perhaps from her Tagalog name, or from the fact that she bore
the characteristic impress of things in the country, representing something
like a triumph over progress, a steamer that was not a steamer at all, an
organism, stolid, imperfect yet unimpeachable, which, when it wished to
pose as being rankly progressive, proudly contented itself with putting on
a fresh coat of paint. Indeed, the happy steamer was genuinely Filipino! If a
person were only reasonably considerate, she might even have been t aken
for the Ship of State, constructed, as she had been, under the inspection of
ReverendosandIlustrsimos.....
Doa Victorina, the only lady seated in the European group, could say whether
the Tabo was not lazy, disobedient, and capriciousDoa Victorina, who,
