What is VMware vSphere ?
An Infrasture virtualization suite that
does the following;
Provides Virtualization, management,
resource optimization, applicationavailability, and operational
automation capabilities
Aggregates physical hardware resources
and provides virtual resources to thedatacenter

How vSphere Fits into CloudComputing
Installing vSphere 5 and creating a virtual infrastructure
The VMs runs in this virtual infrastructure
Vmware vCloud Director enables you to create a cloud
Third party companies host private clouds
VMware clouds empower you to run your virtual machines in
a private or public cloud to fit business needs

Data Protection
Backing up virtual machines requires strategies thatmake use of virtualization architecture to performhighly efficient backups with minimal impact onother virtual machines unlike when backing upphysical servers.
VMware uses Changed Block Tracking (CBT) andData Deduplication methods to carry out backups in
order to avoid unnecessary duplicating alreadyexisting file blocks

Access & Authentication Control
According to best practise each user should haveonly the necessary permissions they need and
VMware vCenter allows flexible assignment ofpermissions and roles
Access control can be achieved through configuringfirewalls, using vShield products (like vShield Egde,
vShield Endpoint, vShield App and vShield Zones) to
secure the edge of the virtual datacentre, protectvirtual applications from network-based threats andstreamline anti-virus protection

Resource Management & Monitoring
Resource contention: since VMs simultaneously use resources of aphysical server they should know how to respond when virtualmachines compete for resources and this brings the need forresource pools Resource pool allows administration to divide and allocate resources to virtual
machines and other resource pools
Although the VMkernel works proactively to avoid resourcecontention, maximising performance requires both analysis andongoing monitoring. When the physical memory on a host is lessthan the sum of memory allocated to all virtual machinesovercommitment occurs. Memory is reclaimed whenovercommitment occurs though the following techniques: Economize use of physical memory pages Ballooning mechanism Memory compression Page virtual machine out to disk
Performance can be monitored using some tools in the guestoperating system and vCenter Server

High Availability (HA)
High Availability (HA) is and instance in which the system iscontinuously operational for a desirably long time
High availability for vCenter Server is primarily implementedusing VMware vCenter server heartbeat and vSphere High
Availability.
vSphere HA is used to find out if an ESXi host is isolated orcrashed.
When a machine stops sending heartbeats, the guest Operating system isrestarted and when an application fails , the host on which theapplication resides is restarted.
Fault Tolerance (FT) is a higher level of availability from HAand it allows users to protect machines from failure. For bestperformance it is recommended that ESXi host monitoring isenabled

Scalability
A cluster is a collection of ESXi hosts and associatedvirtual machines with vSphere HA and vSphere DRS.
A DRS cluster is managed by VMware vCenter Server
When a host is added to the DRS cluster the hostsresources become part of the clusters resources

Patch Management
The VMware vSphere will go through somehardware and software changes in terms ofconfiguration or software updates over time. Thesechanges are implemented in an orderly andsystematic way through the Update manager.
This makes management easier by reducing the
diversity of systems in the environment and also iteliminates security breaches that exploit older
vulnerabilities
