Victorian Men’s and Women’s Championships
This popular annual event was held over the weekend of 10/11 August at
Cairnlea. Conditions were less than ideal with cold, wind, heavy rain and
generally miserable conditions prevailing. It was most pleasing that several players had travelled from interstate to participate.
WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP Thirteen players from Victoria, South Australia, Queensland and Western
Australia contested the Women’s Championship which gave participants a really good ‘hit out’ ahead of the national singles and the Interstate Shield which are to
be held in early September.
Played as a single block over two days, the final result was not determined until the final hoop in the last game of the last round on the second day. Elaine Cover-
dale (Essendon), playing in her usual steady and consistent manner, won the event
with 10 wins. Judy Wembridge (Bairnsdale), who is working hard to get ready for the big events in September, was runner up on 9 wins. Also on 9 wins but
with 10 less net hoops, Christine Eiffert (Quarry Hill) was third. Just behind them
Janine McHardy (Western Australia) and Tricia Devlin (Castlemaine) with 8
wins. Janine had 7 more net hoops than Tricia.
MEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP Fourteen players from Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia contested
the Men’s Championship which gave participants a strong competitive weekend
in the lead up to the major Australia tournaments to be played in September. Following block play, semi finals and finals were held on day 2 together with a
Plate event. The first semi-final was won by Chris McWhirter (Western Austral-
ia) who defeated Ron McBride (South Australia) 7/4, 7/2. The second semi-final went to Brett McHardy (Western Australia) from Kevin Beard (Yarrawonga) 7/5,
6/7, 7/6.
The final was contested over three games with Chris defeating Brett 2/7, 7/6, 7/3. Congratulations to Chris who adds yet another title to a long string of successes.
Chris and Brett are well known at Cairnlea having competed at headquarters on
many previous occasions.
In a play off for third place Kevin Beard defeated Ron McBride 5/7, 7/4, 7/6.
The Plate was won by Lester Hughes (Williamstown) from Chas Quinn
(Yarrawonga).
Many people contributed to the success of the tournament. Kevin Beard, Mike Cohn, Ruth Duffy and Chas Quinn set the hoops in atrocious conditions. Eric
O’Donnell, as TR was ably assisted by Ian McKee, Ian Matthews, Ellen Reed
and Nancy Hatherell. VCA Vice President, Kate Patrick presented the medals.
Thanks to everyone who contributed so much to ensure the success of the
Victorian Championships.

Does your club have a good
news story you’d like to share?
Maybe success in getting a
grant, a new approach to sharing out the tasks that have to be
done round the club, or a re-
cruitment project that really took off?
What happened? What did you
do that was different? Why do
you think it worked?
Please send Croquet Vic the details, we are hoping to publish
a good news edition of
Malletsports in 2020.

President’s Report
VCA President - Jim Clement (Sarsfield) email address [email protected]
The croquet season is again open! Some would say that it doesn’t close, but it must, otherwise we wouldn’t have an excuse for the VCA Season Opening in early August. This was reportedly a great day with good weather, regard-
less of the Bureau of Meteorology forecast. Thanks to those who organised it, to Sandra for coordinating the cater-
ing, to James (groundsman) and the volunteers who set up the courts (and put things away again) and to Kate Pat-
rick for deputising for me. Congratulations to Kenn Boal, our newest Life Member, who ran the first hoop.
Victoria is hosting several national events in the next couple of months: the Croquet Australia GC Gold Medal, GC
Men’s and Women’s Championships and the GC State Teams Championship (otherwise known as the Interstate Shield) are to be contested at VCC from 4th to 15th September. The Croquet Australia GC Handicap Doubles & Sin-
gles Championships are to be hosted by Twin City Croquet Club (North Albury) from 30th September to 4th October.
In my previous report, when talking about the SRV Together More Active grant, I made reference to the VCA Stra-
tegic Plan and that these grant funds must be expended in furtherance of the aims of the Strategic Plan. This Strate-
gic Plan is current only until the end of 2020, while the TMA grant runs until mid-2023; so, your Council is already
active, preparing a new plan for the period 2021-2025. The timeline for the development of this plan has provision for major formal consultation with Regions and clubs in October – December this year. Please ensure that you keep
abreast of progress until then in preparation for this consultation, which is available in minutes of CoM and Council
meetings from the VCA website.
No nomination or even an expression of interest in the position of State Coordinator of AC has been received. I
gather that the moans that I hear from AC players regarding the decline in participation in their code and that “something should be done about it!” really mean that someone else should do something about it. I am not unsym-
pathetic to the need to reverse the decline, but we (VCA) need someone to take responsibility. I, and I am sure
Council, would be agreeable to a group (sub-committee?) taking on this task. AC players, please think about it.
Continuing on my personal note from my previous report, my wife passed away in mid-July, four weeks after I
brought her home from hospital, realising her wish to do so at home. Consequently, I no longer have a need for
leave of absence. My thanks to all those Regions, clubs and individuals who expressed their condolences through phone calls, emails, cards and letters. I believe that I have answered all, but if I did overlook anyone, please accept
my apologies.

Sunny Season Opening at Cairnlea
Very dapper in his Victorian team blazer, Croquet Victoria's latest Life Member Kenn Boal ran the first hoop at the
Victorian Croquet Centre, to open the 2019/20 season.
The weather was kind, the lawns and building were in excellent order, and 70 other members were there to enjoy
the day.
Proceedings were opened by vice-president Kate Patrick, with an acknowledgement of country, and commiserations from those present to president Jim Clement on the recent loss of his wife Sandra.
Following some practicalities about the running of the day, we all trooped out to the lawn and watched Kenn run
that first hoop. He told us firmly that he was going to run it, you should always take a positive approach; and so indeed he did.
A morning of GC and AC croquet followed.
Next came lunch provided by Jill of All Functions Event: minestrone soup, sausage rolls and little quiches, and
mixed sandwiches.
After lunch most people stayed on to play again, closing with an afternoon tea (also provided by Jill) including fresh
fruit and an array of little cakes.
Play was informal, and members were encouraged to join up with people they hadn't met - tables at lunch were defi-
nitely mixed, and there was a great buzz of conversation.
Herb Mackey (Brunswick) was there, and writes:
What a fantastic day it was with friendly company, nice social games, delicious lunch, more games, great afternoon tea and of course the weather was just perfect. Thank you all for a great day!
It was a good day, and we were so lucky with the weather! despite predictions of rain, the sun came out in the after-
noon.
Many thanks to everyone who contributed. Sandra Kastanaras coordinated the preparatory cleaning and the book-
ings, and was tireless on the day. Brimbank and our greenkeeper James put out the hoops the day before, Terry Brown put out the baulk pipes, everyone got their own balls from the boxes and cleared the courts afterwards. Trish
Watts rang the bell to move play along and call us to lunch. Brimbank members Jill, Sue, Joyce, and Kerryn, and
Lynne Roberts (Kew) all lent a hand with the cleaning up. Mike Cohn checked the hoops before play and sorted out the distribution of balls to boxes after play. Thank you one and all.
Next event at Cairnlea is the Victorian GC Men's and Women's this weekend, followed in October by the Australian
GC Gold Cup, the ACA GC Men's and Women's, and the GC Interstate Shield.
Best wishes to all for a great season.

Coaching: news flash
Ruth Duffy, Vic Coordinator Coaching, writes:
Dear Members
As of July 2019 ACA has appointed a new National Director of Coaching, Mr Greg Bury.
All further accreditation of coaches in Australia has been postponed until further notice. This is so a review and update of golf and association coaching manuals and levels can be undertaken and at a later date Ricochet and Gate-
ball.
Please continue to send in your applications and complete the AIS online course so that once this has been complet-ed we can move forward with accrediting coaches.
As things progress I will update the coaching webpage for interested parties to read, thank you for your patience, at
the present time realistically we are looking at sometime in 2020 before this process will be completed.

Planning for the future
All clubs have been sent the Infrastructure Plan 2020 - 2030 which came out of our planning project over the past
year. We’re looking to incorporate relevant priorities from this in our new Strategic Plan for the period 2021 -
2025. This will follow on our current Strategic Plan which covers the period 2015 - 2020. If you would like to contribute ideas please let me know.
Update on our videos
The video Croquet: a hit for health is heading for 2000 views (1950 as I write this). It’s reached New Zealand, Canada, the USA, the UK, and Russia - our Russian Facebook friend Yuri Ilyukhin has asked for the English text
so he can provide captions in Russian. The WCF have just added a link on their Facebook page.
The main purpose of this video though is to make a connection with allied health practitioners in Victoria… Some clubs have already sent the link to an array of local practitioners, some practitioners are interested in putting
a video on their waiting room TV (hopefully the Ageless game version that is meant for the general public). We
hear that some practice staff have already arranged to come to their local club and try out croquet for themselves.
Ultimately we hope the videos will attract new players. It would be great to hear from any clubs where this is hap-pening. If your club has taken up the videos and made contact with your local allied health practitioners, do let us
know, or share your story on our Facebook page.
Feedback to [email protected] please, or to https://www.Facebook.com/CroquetVictoria.
PS If you haven’t already seen them, there is a link to both videos on the front page of the Croquet Vic website.

Croquet for Cancer
Sue Elliott and George Harris, of Morwell Croquet Club, were pleased to be able to present a cheque for $500 to
Megan Hecker at the Gippsland Cancer Care Centre recently. Megan is the Nurse Unit Manager of the Chemo- therapy Unit..
This cheque, along with one for $550 donated in March,
was the proceeds from last year’s Melbourne Cup Day, donations from Latrobe City Council staff during their
eight week inter-office challenge and Latrobe City Council
for hosting their staff.
Morwell Croquet Club has been supporting the Cancer
Centre for a number of years now and it was interesting to
learn that the total amount donated has now reached over
$7,500.
A huge thank you to all those who have helped us to achieve
this. Without their continued support, this would not have
been possible.

Horsham CC needs your support!
Horsham Croquet Club, which has been going since 1924, is
facing a challenge to their existence - a consultants' report to
their local council has proposed that their club and the adjacent tennis club be demolished, in favour of more
gardens and the large lake which is the original Guildfoyle
Botanic Gardens Plan. A new indoor sports stadium is pro-posed to be built nearby.
Details are provided on the Horsham CC web page.
Croquet Victoria has recently identified Horsham CC as a
regional centre for croquet, and Horsham is hosting the AC
Country Regionals next year, using its own courts and the tennis courts which are also under threat.
If you have played at Horsham CC, or your club has been
involved with them, you may wish to email them a message of support.

A Lasting Croquet Friendship
Drysdale croquet club held its inaugural meeting in 1950, Wilma McLean was one of the first members. In the
early years that followed Edna Peel also joined and these two women who had never met before, became firm
friends. Now years on, they are still best of friends, both dedicated association players who have both won many tournaments both in singles or playing together as they did in the 1984-1985 Pennant winning the Combined
Divisions 1 & 2 as well as the 1974-75 Pennant. (see photo below left).
Sadly, Wilma was widowed in the early nineties and several years later married a respected member of the Drysdale CC, Graham Bath.
Edna and Wilma served many terms as Office bearers, Edna as treasurer, Wilma in several roles including
President.
By 2002 both Wilma and Edna had been made life members and received many accolades for their tireless years
of service, including Edna’s 28 yrs as treasurer over a period of 40+ years and a nomination for the very first
ACA Meritorious Medal for Services to Croquet for Wilma, which she subsequently won.
Edna’s and Wilma’s respective husbands Harold Peel and Graham Bath were also heavily involved with the club,
both as office bearers and in maintaining lawns or building whatever structure was needed. The two croquet
courts at Drysdale have been named the Edna and Harold Peel Lawn and the Wilma and Graham Bath Lawn in
their honour.
Loyalty to their club and each other typifies the friendship that Edna and Wilma have, Edna is now 87 and
Wilma is 97, Edna still plays AC on Saturday mornings, sadly due to an accident Wilma can no longer play but
that doesn’t stop her using her referee and coaching skills to assess the play.
Still members, here they are at the 2018 Drysdale CC Christmas party. (photo courtesy Reg Paton)
