MINISTER’S MESSAGE
Welcome to the annual Victorian School Sports Awards
Victorians love their sport, and it is no secret that nothing gives us more pleasure than watching our favourite sporting heroes put us on the world stage whether it be with a splash of the pool, swing of a bat or kick of a football.
Sport is central to our lives and communities, whether it’s volunteering at the local footy club, staying up too late watching the Australian Open, or playing soccer or netball with mates on the weekend.
There is no greater testament to the importance of sport than the Olympics – and wasn’t Rio 2016 a treat? More than 10,000 athletes from across the globe converged for 16 unforgettable days to remind us of the power of sport to entertain and unite.
This is the power of sport: whether playing, watching or volunteering – it keeps us happy, healthy, involved and proud.
Sport is just as vital in our schools. It teaches students to work as a team, and to lead and motivate others. They learn the importance of training, practise, patience and discipline, and they make new friends.
Most importantly, school sport is about having a go and having a good time.
Our Education State recognises this importance. As part of it we introduced the $148.3 million Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund so every student can participate, and launched the $16 million
School Pride and Sports Fund to build great new sporting facilities for students.
Today, at the 23rd Victorian School Sports Awards, we recognise local athletes who have excelled at sports across Victoria, Australia and the world.
We will be awarding 51 young athletes across 18 categories with a Sporting Blue, recognising their outstanding success in 2016.
We will also be presenting the Lindsay Gaze Award to the young athlete who has demonstrated outstanding dedication to both school and community sport, and recognising the parents, coaches, teachers and volunteers who have put in countless hours supporting these young athletes.
Those being recognised this year represent our next generation of sporting stars. They are an extraordinarily talented group of athletes playing a range of sports, and we can be proud of every one of them.
Congratulations to everyone involved in the 2016 Victorian School Sports Awards – I hope you enjoy this special day.
The Hon James Merlino, MPDeputy PremierMinister for Education

OVERVIEW
VICTORIAN SCHOOL SPORTS AWARDSThe Victorian School Sports Awards are the highest sporting accolades presented in Victoria’s government school system.
This annual event, held for the first time in 1994, rewards excellence across all categories of major school sports. The awards are given to students, teachers, parents and volunteers who have excelled or made an outstanding contribution to school sport.
In 2010, a new award recognising community partnerships between schools and local community groups was introduced to acknowledge the vital role that partnerships play in the development of Victorian sports.
This year, for the second time, we are delighted to present the Lindsay Gaze Award, in honour of the seven-time Olympian and Basketball Hall of Fame legend. This award will be presented to an individual who has demonstrated outstanding dedication to both school and community sport.
Fifty-one individual student awards, each known as a Sporting Blue, will be presented across eighteen categories to young athletes for their outstanding success in 2016.
The term Sporting Blue derives from the history of English sport. In 1936, during a boat race between Oxford and Cambridge Universities, a Cambridge oarsman tied a light blue ribbon to the bow of his boat (the colour of his school, Eton College). A dark blue ribbon was then ascribed to Oxford (the colour of Christ Church College).
Subsequently, a Sporting Blue became identified around the world as an accolade of sporting excellence by young people and is distinguished by a two-coloured ribbon attached to a traditional bronze medallion.
The Department of Education and Training believes it is fitting to present Sporting Blue awards as a reflection of the high standard of talent and dedication demonstrated by aspiring young athletes in Victorian government schools.

PRESENTERS
MORGAN MITCHELLOlympian
At just 22 years of age Morgan has emerged as one of the most exciting talents in Australian athletics. In her teen years Morgan focused on netball and made National junior teams and it was barely four years ago that she turned her immense natural abilities to athletics. She made the 400 metre semi-finals at the World Junior Championships in 2012 and steady progression saw her named in the Australian Olympic team last year where again she made it through to the semis in Rio.
Underpinning her athletic career is an effervescent personality that has endeared her to Australian sports fans.
AHMED KELLYParalympian
Ahmed’s journey to selection in the London and Rio Paralympic teams is one of the great stories of Australian sport. Born in Iraq with arm and leg deficiencies, Ahmed’s amazing success in the swimming pool, and in life, has inspired thousands of people since he arrived in Australia in 2000. Despite facing daunting challenges on a daily basis that many of us would struggle with, Ahmed swims for Australia, drives a car and is completing a degree at La Trobe University. He is indeed a very special young man and we are fortunate to have him here today.

PRESENTERS
BELINDA HOCKINGOlympian
Belinda is a three time Olympian, competing at 2008, 2012 and 2016 Olympics, in the 100/200m Backstroke. She started swimming at the age of four due to bad asthma. At age 15 she received a scholarship to the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS). After the 2012 Olympics she relocated to Melbourne Victoria, and trained at Nunawading swimming club under Coach Rohan Taylor. Career best year was in 2014 when she won 2 Gold and 1 Bronze at the Commonwealth Games, in Glasgow, and finished the year ranked number 1 in the world for 200m Backstroke.
In 2016 Belinda achieved her life time goal of making it to three Olympic Games, and is now a triple Olympian. After 13 years on the international circuit and 9 years on the Australian swim team Belinda has decided to retire and focus on life outside of the pool and finish her studies in primary school teaching.
ANDREW SMITHOlympian
After topping the goal scoring in the Australian Hockey League in 2002, Andrew was selected in the Australian Mens Hockey Squad the Kookaburras, and debuted against India in May of that same year. After being a member of the Kookaburras for two years, Andrew was selected in the 2004 Athens Olympic training squad and prepared for the 2004 Games. Disappointingly, he narrowly missed selection in the final Olympic Team but was selected as a travelling reserve in the event of an injury. Still a member of the Kookaburras in 2008, he again narrowly missed selection in the final Olympic team and travelled to Beijing as a reserve. The misfortune of an injury to a team member would see Andrew substituted into the Olympic Team, and make his Olympic debut in the semi-final loss to Spain. Two days later, in his final appearance for the Kookaburras, Andrew was part of the Bronze Medal winning performance against the Netherlands with a resounding 6-2 win.

OUTSTANDING TEACHER CONTRIBUTION AWARD
NOREEN MCMENAMANCroydon Hills Primary School
Noreen is active at all levels of school sport in Victoria. During 11 years as a Physical Education teacher at Croydon Hills Primary School, she has encouraged all students - not just those that consider themselves `sporty’ – to get involved in sport. Her contribution also extends beyond her school. In 2016, Noreen was State Manager for track and field, a role that saw her manage more than 100 Victorian athletes at a national competition. She was Chief Judge and Track Manager at regional athletics. Noreen was also president of her district Primary School Sports Association, where she built links between schools and community clubs and associations. She was a member of School Sport Victoria Athletics sub–committee last year, and is a life member of School Sport Victoria.
SEAN DE MORTONBalwyn North Primary School
Sean leads by example as a physical education teacher. In 2016, he competed at World Ironman Championships. He also made an outstanding contribution to school sport at Balwyn North Primary, and beyond. Sean’s achievements last year included co-creating a national information sharing network for physical education teachers. Sean, a region coordinator for the Eastern Metropolitan Region, also created his own popular sports game, Battleball. He raised money to buy bikes for a Bike Education program at his school, presented to other teachers at professional development conferences, encouraged all students to participate in a wide range of sports, including girls in Aussie Rules, and connected students to sport clubs in the local community.
ROBERT HANDRECKBalwyn High School
Robert’s outstanding contribution to sport is so highly regarded by his school it named one of its sports fields in his honour. Robert has spent the past 14 of 40 years at Balwyn High School as Director of Sport. He is showing no signs of slowing down. In 2016, Robert was behind two whole school events involving more than 2000 students and 200 staff. He coordinated 336 sports teams including 40 participating at state level, and coached 11 teams in nine sports, fitting in training sessions before and after school and at lunchtimes. Robert also coordinated a student coaches’ program for 169 young people. If this was not enough, he continued to work with local sporting clubs to encourage sports participation outside of school. Many students joined clubs Robert formed links with, and have enjoyed success with these clubs including at state level. The Robert Handreck Sports Field opened in 2015.

OUTSTANDING COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTION AWARD
DEBORAH WALLTucker Road Bentleigh Primary School
Debby has become even more involved in school sports as a retired teacher. Since hanging up her whistle in 2013, the former primary school physical education teacher has continued to coordinate Bentleigh District and Beachside Division. She also helps out at School Sport Victoria (SSV) events. In 2016, Debby’s main focus was raising awareness of SSV’s Code of Conduct. Her work ensured students, staff and spectators knew what was expected of them at events. She also built on positive relationships she had developed with organisations and local sports clubs, to the benefit of school sport. This included participating in Swimming Victoria club activities to improve her ability to run school swimming events. Tucker Rd Bentleigh Primary School, which nominated Debby, said students had access to more activities and better facilities thanks to her efforts.
GREG BIRCHMaribyrnong College – Maribyrnong Sports Academy
Greg is a champion of school sports. In 2016, he gave his time as Maribyrnong College School Council President and Maribyrnong Sports Academy Advisory Board chair. He also headed the organising committee for the highly successful Maribyrnong Sports Academy 10th Anniversary Gala Dinner. Representatives from community and sporting organisations were among 430 people at the dinner. This was thanks to countless hours Greg spent building links between the school and community. Greg also chaired tender and selection committees, and was among volunteer parents who helped bring plans for a new training centre to life. His other achievements included leading initiatives that increased participation at the school swimming carnival, and establishing a scholarship fund to help students with the costs associated with representative sports.

OUTSTANDING SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS AWARD
Oakleigh South Primary School
Oakleigh South Primary School is helping create active communities. The school has worked hard to develop relationships with local sports and community organisations. As a result, almost 80 per cent of children in grades 4-6 at Oakleigh South participate in club sport outside school. This has helped the school achieve some outstanding sporting results at regional, state and national level. The school’s relationship with sports and community organisations are proving mutually beneficial, such as having local secondary students help out with school sport as part of the students’ community service. Oakleigh South shares its sports facilities and fields with the wider community. It is also an active member of the local sports association, regularly hosting sports finals, tournaments and practice sessions. As well as creating active local communities, the school raised funds to send skipping ropes to children in Ethiopia.

OUTSTANDING SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS AWARD
Ballarat High School
Ballarat High School’s specialist sports program has seen it build strong and lasting connections with local sports clubs and organisations. These partnerships have led to more young people participating and developing in a wide range of sports, with many outstanding results. In 2016, Ballarat High students represented the school in 17 sports at School Sport Victoria and other competitions. National championship titles were among the long list of achievements. The school also supported community sports events, and opened its doors to allow others to use its sports facilities. Ballarat High had the most participants of any school in its local council’s fun run last year, and hosted other schools for events and competitions. Ballarat High students helped run these meets, and mentored participants. The partnership with Cricket Victoria also led to umpiring opportunities for students.
