Video Analysis

Jagwar Ma are a psychedelic indie band from Australia who formed in 2011. They attract the same audience as bands

such as Swim Deep and Peace, whilst being considered more independent; their music is less conventional, and they appear

on indie label Marathon Artists (www.MarathonArtists.com).

Colour Correction A large amount of colour correction has been used in the edit of “The Throw,” something I may replicate in my own video. The colour has been washed out and the brighter primary colours subdued – the blacks have been crushed, and the whole video has been given a sepia overtone. This makes the superimposition (which comes later) stand out more. It also makes the video similar to vintage film, (small black dots emphasise this) or the filters available on Instagram.

•The reasoning for this may be that Instagram is used by the band’s target audience – and hence links the ‘look’ of the video to photos edited by target audience members.• Vintage photos are considered desirable in todays culture – a rare or ‘classic’ item. The old style colour-correction may also link to eras such as the 60’s, where Jagwar Ma draw inspiration from. •As the audience for Jagwar Ma may be young, viewing videos and hearing music similar to that created in a previous decade may give them chance to experience a bygone era – one they have only witnessed on TV or in the music of bands.

Superimposition 2D shapes have been superimposed on he video, most of which are bright, primary colours, and simple in structure. They visually represent the aural and instrumental element of the song – each colour and shape represents a different instrument. This is a visually interesting way of ‘seeing’ the song. It also makes the video more visually interesting, as the footage of the singer may stop grabbing the viewers attention after sometime.

“Do I Wanna Know,” – Arctic Monkeys

Each line represents another instrument in the track – similar to “The Throw.” The lines also link to the cover of the album - which features similar lines. This cohesion of digipak and video is something I very much want to replicate

However my track, at most parts, has all instruments playing similar rhythms at once – This effect may only work if used on the chorus or end of the song. I plan to discover how it is done and experiment with it.
