Soviets Launch First Satellite

• Sputnik launched on October 4, 1957. • Sputnik is Russian and means co-traveler,

traveling companion, and satellite. • It was 23inches in diameter, and weighed

183 pounds. • It took about 96 minutes to orbit around

the earth once.

Video Tape

• Video tapes were a means of recording images and sounds onto magnetic tape.

• Bing Crosby’s production company gave the worlds first demonstration of a video tape recording on November 11, 1951.

Hydrogen Bomb

• Also known as the H-Bomb.• It employs

hydrogen fusion to generate neutrons.

Color TV• A few years after 1950,

black and white televisions had been standardized in the US.

• Color broadcast can be created by broadcasting three monochrome images, one in the three colors of red, green and blue (RGB).
