Episode Overview

• In this episode, we will:

o look at some basic possessives such as: “my”, “your”, “his”, and “her”

o learn two simple ways you can introduce yourself:

“My name is..”

“I am…”

o learn to ask someone’s name (“What is your name?”)

o learn how to say “Thank you” and also learn how to say “I am fine, thank you”.



SECTION 1: Possessives of Pronouns - “my”, “your”, “his”, “her”

• To create the possessive “your”, we take the personal pronoun o∙yaa and add the indicator “gé” to create the word o∙yaa∙gé, which means “your”.

• In Sinhala we can use “gé” to indicate possessive form of any person or animal.



• Similarly,

o To create the possessive “their”, we take the personal pronoun é∙yaa and add the indicator “gé” to create the word é∙yaagé, which means “their”; and

o To create the possessive “Pat’s”, we take the name ‘Pat’ and add the indicator “gé” to create the word ‘Pat’∙gé, which means “Pat’s”

• However,

o Important: The word for “my” slightly diverts from the above rule

o The possessive “my” is ma∙gé (and not ma∙mȧ∙gé)



SECTION 2: Introducing Yourself - “My name is…”

• The Sinhala word for ‘name’ is na∙mȧ.

o And “My name” is ma∙gé na∙mȧ

• We saw in Episode 1 that the equivalent expressions for “are”, “am”, and “is”, are not used very often. This is one more of those instances when we don’t use “is”.

• So, to say “My name (is) Pat” we just add the name ‘Pat’ at the end of the words ma∙gé na∙mȧ to create ma∙gé na∙mȧ ‘Pat’.

o This literally reads “my name, Pat”, where the word “is” is implied.

• Similarly,

o “Your name (is) Pat” will be o∙yaa∙gé na∙mȧ ‘Pat’; and

o “His/her name (is) Pat will be é∙yaa∙gé na∙mȧ ‘Pat’



SECTION 2: Introducing Yourself - “I am…”

• This is an even easier way to introduce yourself:

• In Episode 1, we saw that “I (am) fine” was ma∙mȧ hoňdhin in∙nȧ∙va, where it literally read as “I, fine” and the word “am” was implied.

• In the same way, when we say “I am Pat”, we don’t need to use an equivalent for “am”, and we just say it as ma∙mȧ ‘Pat’.

o Literally, this reads: “I, Pat”, where the word “am” is implied.

• Similarly,

o “You (are) Pat” is o∙yaa ‘Pat’; and

o “He/she (is) Pat” is é∙yaa ‘Pat’



SECTION 3: Asking someone’s name - “What is your name?”

• In Episode 1, we saw that “How (are) you?” was o∙yaa ko∙ho∙mȧ∙dha?

o Remember that this literally read: “you, how?” where the word “are” was implied.

• In the same way, to ask “What is your name?” we need to construct a sentence that literally reads, “your name, what?”

o We already know from Section 2 that “your name” is o∙yaagé na∙mȧ

o The word for “what” in Sinhala is mo∙kak∙dhȧ?

(Notice that it has the same soft ‘d’ ending that we saw in ko∙ho∙mȧ∙dhȧ?)

o So to ask “What (is) your name?” we just join these words to ask o∙yaa∙gé na∙mȧ mo∙kak∙dhȧ?



• Similarly,

o “What (is) his/her name?” is é∙yaa∙gé na∙mȧ mo∙kak∙dhȧ?

Notice that this literally reads: “his/her name, what?” and the word “is” is implied



SECTION 4: Saying “Thank you”

• The word for “Thank you” in Sinhala is is∙thoo∙thi

• In Episode 1 we saw that when someone greeted us with ko∙ho∙mȧ∙dhȧ? we learned 2 ways of responding, which were:

o “I (am) fine” - ma∙mȧ hoňdhin in∙nȧ∙va; and

o “(I am) fine” - hoňdhin in∙nȧ∙va

• Now that we know how to say “Thank you”, we can now reply more politely by saying:

o “I (am) fine, thank you” - ma∙mȧ hoňdhin in∙nȧ∙va, is∙thoo∙thi; and

o “(I am) fine, thank you” - hoňdhin in∙nȧ∙va, is∙thoo∙thi
