When I was little, I spent a lot of time praying while staring at my hands. They would be in my lap, palms up, and I would have this compulsion to offer them to God. Granted, I was mostly dumbfounded while doing this, and there was a small insecurity at-tached to the gesture, because I could-n’t explain why this inclination seemed so fundamental to my prayer. My hands? Why would I give God my hands? But still, the desire to give them to Him persisted over the years. Fast forward to when I was in high school, I happened upon an old devo-tional prayer in my mom’s bedside ta-ble to honor the Miraculous Infant Je-sus of Prague. I remember that mo-ment so clearly because the first sen-

tence brought me into a kind of in-tense focus. “Divine Infant Jesus, I want to give you my hands today.” As I continued to read the prayer, the words changed from that passive ac-tion “want”, which had been a desire all my life, to the active “Divine Infant, I give You my hands…” I give You my hands. The prayer settled a deep peace within me, gifting to me a satisfaction I didn’t know I was missing in this small but necessary part of my prayer life. And while I certainly would have been happy to only have discovered this more precise focus on how I should offer the Lord my hands, He wasn’t done with me that day.

The Infant Jesus of Prague had always been familiar to me. My parents had an abundance of the Infant Jesus statues around the house that I always associ-ated with their prayer life and us kids, but I had forgotten the reason behind them. So, that day, I went to my mom and showed her the prayer, told her how it had affected me, and she then proceeded to tell me that there is an intimate reason why that prayer reso-nates with me. A Powerful Novena in Urgent Need In November 1990, my mom was preg-nant for the third time when she started spotting. She thought she was miscarrying again. After suffering two already, she was desperate to keep this third pregnancy. Medicine being what it was then, her doctor told her there wasn’t much she or they could do at that point, and told her to lie down and put her feet up. That day, she pled

with God, begging to let her and my dad keep this child. Sometime before that, my grand-mother had given my parents a statue of the Infant Jesus of Prague along with a pamphlet with the history of the devotion and some prayers for the protection and well-being of their new family. That day, my mom felt drawn to the Infant Jesus, and while lying down, she picked up the pamphlet. Flipping through it, my mom landed on what's titled the Powerful Novena in Urgent Need, and immediately, she knew that she and my dad needed to pray this.

For the next nine, consecutive hours my mom and dad would find a phone (a payphone in my dad's case) and they would say the prayers together for the success of the pregnancy. While recounting the story, my mom said that the moment she read the prayer for the first time, she was overcome with a sense of calm that rid her of every anxiety and worry, and she knew that it would be okay. Within the next few days, all symptoms of a miscar-riage ceased, and seven months later, on June 21, 1991, I was born.

I'm alive today because of the Infant Jesus. The History of the Infant Jesus of Prague The Infant Jesus of Prague is originally of Spanish origin; brought to Bohemia by the Spanish Princess Maria Manri-quez de Lara who, after marrying a Czech nobleman, presented it to her daughter, Princess Polyxena Lobkowicz. In 1628, after having discovered that the Discalced Carmelites in Prague had fallen into such poverty that they could hardly feed themselves at times, the princess gifted her beloved statue to the religious with these prophetic words: As long as you venerate this image you will not be in want. Unfortunately, the devotion to the Di-vine Infant didn’t last long. Two years later, during the Thirty Years’ War, the novitiate was moved to Munich, Ger-many. Many inhabitants fled Prague during that time, and the devotion fell into obscurity. In November of 1631, Sweden invaded the city and took possession of all the churches. It was at that time that the Carmelite monastery was plundered, and the image of the Infant was thrown into a pile of garbage behind the high altar. Both of its hands were broken off in the process, but despite being made of wax, the rest of it was undamaged. For the next seven years, the Miraculous Infant lay forgotten by all.

Prague was in dire straits. The commu-nity was poor and suffering from the presence of the hostile armies that had overrun the city. It wasn’t until 1637, on the feast of Pentecost that the In-fant was found once more, thanks to the return and efforts of the Venerable Father Cyril of the Mother of God; known for his fervent worship of the Infant of Prague as a novice. After finding the Infant Jesus in a pile of dust and rubble, Father Cyril was so overwhelmed by joy that he didn’t no-tice that the hands of the Infant had broken off. One day, while kneeling in prayer for hours before the statue, Fa-ther Cyril heard these words: “Have pity on Me and I will have pity on you. Give Me My hands, and I will give you peace. The more you honor Me, the more I will bless you.” Ashamed that he hadn’t noticed the broken hands of the Infant before then, largely because of the mantel in which the figure was adorned, he rushed to the Prior and begged him to have the hands replaced. But because the Prior didn’t have a deep under-standing of the statue, Father Cyril’s request was dismissed due to the se-vere poverty of the monastery. Father Cyril didn’t give up. Through the Virgin Mary, he begged the Heavenly Father to send them the necessary funds to restore the Infant’s hands. Three days later, a devout and wealthy man fell ill, and Father Cyril was called to the dying man’s bedside. There the man offered the funds to pay for

the restoration of the statue. But the Prior decided to purchase an entirely new statue instead of restoring the original. Soon after the purchase, a candlestick fell and shattered the new statue, and Father Cyril was able to renew his pursuit of what the Infant had asked of him. After the candlestick incident, Father Cyril carried the damaged Infant Jesus to his cell and there pled to the Blessed Mother for assistance. Having just fin-ished his prayer, he was called into the church, and there he found a noble woman waiting for him. Greeting him, the lady proceeded to hand Father Cyril a considerable amount of money, and when he turned to thank her, the lady had disappeared. Joyfully thanking Our Lady of Carmel, he sought out the Prior, and Father Cyril was given permission to have the hands re-sculpted barring that the commission didn’t exceed the amount the Prior had granted him of the sum donated. Unfortunately, the sum of the repair exceeded the amount, and he was again denied his desire to repair the statue. In desperation, Father Cyril appealed to the image itself, and deep within his soul, he heard: “Place Me at the en-trance of the sacristy and you will re-ceive aid.” Obediently, he did, and soon after, a stranger arrived, noticed the state of the statue and offered to repair it. It was at that moment that the Prior arrived. He accepted the stranger’s generosity and the Infant of Prague was finally restored, and the Infant richly repaid the stranger and the community. In 1651, after years of devotion, and some controversy within the order, the Carmelite general, Father Francis of the Blessed Sacrament, made a canonical visitation to the monastery to examine matters regarding the devotion. He issued a special decree promoting the

devotion and made it clear that the devotion is providential to the spiritual benefit of all the devotees. On April 4th, 1655 the Infant of Prague was sol-emnly crowned and proclaimed as a King. And though the devotion suffered dur-ing the Enlightenment due to anti-religious trends, Pope Leo XIII restored splendor to the Infant by confirming the Sodality of the Infant of Prague in 1896 and granted many indulgences to the devotion to the Infant. And the Word Became Flesh and Dwelt Among Us Throughout His ministry, Jesus calls our attention back to the virtues of childhood, and shows us how great is the love of the Father through the Son. By the image of His sovereignty and majesty, contrasted with a child’s hu-mility and weakness, devotion to Jesus’ Holy Infancy teaches us to have a bold confidence in the Father’s love and mercy. Like a child with complete trust in its parents, this confidence, once recognized, will enable us to be more docile to the Holy Spirit within us, and help us to discern and act out the will of God in our lives. St. Theresa of Avila, who was known for her great devotion to the Infant Jesus of Prague, once wrote that

“Christ has no body on earth but yours, no hands but yours, no feet but yours. Yours are the eyes through which Christ's compassion for the world is to look out; yours are the feet with which He is to go about doing good; and yours are the hands with which He is to bless us now.”

This reminds us that in all things, the Son was obedient to the Father, even unto death on a cross, for He is “meek and humble of heart.” St. Paul reminds us to “have among yourselves the same attitude that is also yours in Christ Jesus.” (Phil. 2:5) In order for us to orient ourselves in proper response to the love and will of God, we must first become like little children, so that we might have hearts full of trusting adoration and devotion. The Infant Jesus cultivates that trust, teaching us to conform our lives to Christ in all ways. In order that we aspire to live holier lives let us pray, “O dear sweet Infant Jesus, I offer you my will, that you may strengthen it, my mind that you inspire it; my memory that you fill it; my wishes and desires, that you cleanse them; my intentions that you guide them, all my inner and outer activities, that you make them sacred. All I am and all I have is yours. Your love for me is my hope and trust. Hear me and grant that I may never leave you. Amen.” (Morning Offering to the Infant Jesus of Prague) The Photos on the previous two pages were taken in our St. Michael the Archangel Adoration Chapel, where a statue of the Infant of Prague was recently given a new home. You can find him in the corner to the right of our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. All are welcome to come and venerate when you come to adore.

Today (Sunday), we celebrate the Solemnity of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist, or as it is titled in the East – Nativ-ity of the Holy Glorious Prophet, Forerunner and Baptist John. St. John the Baptist is the son of Saints Zachariah and Elizabeth and the last great Old Testament prophet. He is the harbinger of Jesus Christ. Saint John the Baptist is an example of one who preached with passion, strength, humility and courage. He was not afraid, even in the face of grave danger, to speak the truth and prepare the way for Jesus Christ. As John the Baptist preached, so must we also speak in the ways associated with our God-given gifts, the same dynamic message in our current culture – a culture that stays anything and every-thing is okay as long as it makes you feel good, a motto frequently professed by King Herod. And as if St. John the Baptist wasn’t enough of an example for us, many of us remember that the papacy of Pope St.

John Paul II, who in the face of grave danger from the Na-zis, and even more so, the Socialists, stood toe-to-toe with them and defeated them by preaching the Truth of Jesus Christ. Now a saint counted among the greats of the Catho-lic Church, John Paul II stands for us as the pope of the New Evangelization and an example of what it means to preach the Gospel message in a world hostile to Jesus Christ. So with this all being said, I give you 7 quotes from Pope St. John Paul II’s Latin Rite Mass Homily given at Kyiv in the Ukraine on June 24, 2001 about Saint John the Baptist and his relations to Jesus Christ…

1. “His name is John” (Lk 1:63)…which in Hebrew means “God is benevolent”. God is benevolent to human beings: he wants them to live; he wants them to be saved. God is benevolent to his people: he wants to make of them a blessing for all the

nations of the earth. God is benevolent to human-ity: he guides its pilgrim way towards the land where peace and justice reign. All this is contained in that name: John!”

2. “Look today to John the Baptist, an enduring model of fidelity to God and his Law. John prepared the way for Christ by the testimony of his word and his life. Imitate him with docile and trusting generos-ity.”

3. “Saint John the Baptist is above all a model of faith. Following the example of the great Prophet Elijah, in order to listen more attentively to the word of the one Lord of his life, he leaves everything and

withdraws to the desert, from which he would issue the resounding call to prepare the way of the Lord (cf. Mt 3:3 and parallels).”

4. “He is a model of humility, because to those who saw in him not only a Prophet, but the Messiah himself, he replied: “Who do you suppose that I am? I am not he. No, but after me one is coming, the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to untie” (Acts 13:25).”

5. “He is a model of uprightness and cour-age in defending the truth, for which he was prepared to pay in his person, even to the point of imprisonment and death.”

6. “You, dear young people, be brave and free! Do not let yourselves be taken in by the deceptive mirages of an easy happiness. Fol-low the way of Christ: he is demanding, cer-tainly, but he alone can help you to savour the full meaning of life and enjoy peace of heart.”

7. “You, dear parents, prepare the way of the Lord before your children. Bring them up with love, and set a good example by living the principles you teach. And you, teachers and leaders of society, deepen your commit-ment to promoting the complete develop-ment of the human person, fostering in the young a deep sense of justice and of solidar-ity with the less fortunate.”

To conclude, let us always remember the words of Pope St. John Paul II – “Be Not Afraid.” Even in the face of our current cul-ture, who sees Christianity, specifically Ca-tholicism as a threat, we have the actions and words of St. John the Baptist, the Cross

of Jesus Christ, and the chivalrous witness of the great saints and martyrs of the Church who support us and inter-cede for us at all times. Saint John the Baptist…Pray for Us.
