letter from the ceo Dave Garlow
“To be an employer of
choice in our community and in our industry is something
that we take very
seriously...”- Dave Garlow,
President and CEO, Viega LLC
Since introducing Viega ProPress into the U.S.
market in 1999, Viega, through unprecedented
growth, has become a noteworthy competitor in the
industries that we serve. The Viega growth story in
the Americas is certainly one of the most exciting
ones of our industry. OK, I am a little biased.
We have grown from literally no market presence 15
years ago to more than 400 employees, a state-of-
the-art manufacturing facility, four distribution centers
and an industry-leading training center filled to
capacity. Our growth didn’t stop at the U.S. borders;
we have a strong presence in Canada and are
developing business in Mexico and other Latin
American countries.
Maybe one of the most exciting measures is that
Viega has gone from an unknown company, one that
was nearly impossible to staff only 10 years ago, to
a company that so many talented individuals want
to be a part of. To be an employer of choice in our
community and in our industry is something that
we take very seriously and a goal that we work hard
to achieve.
Although the growth story is remarkable, what
is more important to us is how and why we have
grown. Viega’s growth was founded on innovation.
This starts with innovative products but is strongly
supported by supply chain and service innovations.
It is this spirit of innovation
that you will find
everywhere at Viega. It is
this innovation that will fuel
our aggressive growth and
product introduction plans
for the coming years.
You can expect
more industry-changing
innovations from us in the
near future. I hope you
have come to expect that
from us because it is what
we do best. These are exciting times at Viega but
they always have been! Thank you for your business
and continued support.

Executive Vice President and COO, Viega LLC
I have a 13-acre yard, so it’s a good thing that
mowing is one way I relax. With the onset of spring
in Kansas, assuming it’s not still snowing in May
like last year, I’ll be dusting off my lawnmower and
working outside as often as I can.
Spring is a beautiful season in Kansas, where
two of Viega LLC’s offices are located. The
Central Manufacturing and Distribution Facility in
McPherson, KS, is surrounded by wide fields of
wheat. Watching the tiny green shoots of wheat
grow up through the snow in winter time is an
amazing experience. Even in the cold of winter, the
wheat doesn’t stop growing.
Growth is a part of Kansas culture, which is
why I think it’s appropriate that Viega LLC’s
corporate office is located here too. Growth is part
of Viega’s culture.
Plumbing and heating systems are part of
everyday life now. What would our lives look like
without clean water and climate-controlled homes?
There was a time when those facets of American
home life were considered luxuries. Now, they’re
necessities. As those fields continue to expand,
bringing opportunities for our customers to grow
their businesses, Viega LLC wants to grow with
them to provide the best systems and the best
service in the industry.

Robert’s Mechanical in Orem, UT, installs Viega MegaPress
and Viega ProPress whenever possible. Recently, Robert’s
Mechanical chose 2" Viega MegaPress and Viega ProPress
systems on the 800,000 BTU boiler at the Goodfellow Corp
in Lindon, UT. Robert’s Mechanical prefers Viega systems
because they don’t have to thread, solder or deal with leaks.
Viega MegaPress allows them to complete a job with one
person, which is practically impossible when you’re threading
2" black iron pipe.

Lake Geneva, WI
The Grand Geneva Resort at Lake Geneva, WI, called Zien
Mechanical of Milwaukee to repair a black iron pipe connection
in the hotel’s hydronic system. Since the hotel was fully booked
and the leak was located in the ceiling, Zien Mechanical had
to use an alternative method to repair it. Zien used Viega
MegaPress and was able to repair the connection faster than
they expected.

ANB Fire Protection of Penacook, NH, has installed a new fire
protection system in the Nutmeg Inn, a 1740s-era bed and
breakfast, using Viega ProPress for copper in sizes ½" to 1¼".
ANB chose Viega ProPress because flameless press technology
was the smart choice for installing a piping system in the
historic house.
Richmond, VA
Carroll Plumbing and Heating of Richmond, VA,
is installing more than 6,000 feet of ViegaPEX
Barrier tubing and 4,500 square feet of Viega
panels in the University of Richmond’s
historic Henry Mansfield Cannon Memorial
Chapel. Heating the chapel, built in
1929, has been difficult because of
its 20-foot-thick stone walls, which
made Viega ProRadiant heating
systems an ideal choice.

Although the 2014 outlook for contractors brings
cautious optimism, consumer confidence could signal
a recession found only in the rear-view mirror. There
is no doubt that over the past five years many factors
have taken a toll on contractors trying to tread water
yet glimmers of hope seem to be there. As we continue
forward into the New Year, plumbing and HVAC/R
contractors suggest that the economy is growing.
“Our members report that work has increased in
basically all of the general sectors we represent—
service and repair, remodeling and new construction,”
said Steve Rivers, President of PHCC—National
Association. “They’re bidding on more projects,
experiencing more backlog and anticipating more work
coming. New residential construction, which was struck
hard by the downturn, appears to have rebounded.
I remain cautiously optimistic about the economy.
Conditions are gradually getting better, which is good
news for our industry.”
The continued rise of the service, repair and
replacement, and remodel market indicates a much
greater consumer confidence with the stabilization of
the market.
“Our clients are definitely in the mood for
remodeling, adding additions with bathrooms and
HVAC, or air conditioning their seasonal homes,”
said Brian Nelson, owner of Nelson Mechanical Design,
Inc., Edgartown, MA. “They are more willing to
spend on new projects rather than just servicing their
existing systems.”
Riding Momentum
Hopefully, the industry can ride what turned out to
be a relatively good second half of 2013. “The last half
of ’13 saw the first sustained steady growth we've seen
over the past five years,” said Dave Yates, owner of F.W.
Behler, York, PA. “Prior to that it was surge/sag/surge/
sag, which has made it difficult to decide when
to hire.”
In general, contractors from coast to coast generally
feel good about the upcoming year.
“We have seen increased sales at higher profits
in the residential radiant/hydronic market and less
competition from ‘low-ball’ competitors,” said
Paul Pollets, owner of Advanced Radiant
Technology, Seattle.
The Keys to Economic Success
Monitoring economic indicators like housing starts,
jobs reports and stock exchange fluctuations among
others are all critical when conducting market forecasts.
Four topics stand out for contractors in 2014:
Healthcare — Let’s face it: The changing healthcare
policy is the elephant in the room. The uncertainty for
many business owners has them preparing for the
worst. “Healthcare is the lone storm cloud that threatens
to botch the recovery,” said Yates. “Our healthcare
costs for our employees have gone up dramatically over
the past 18 months as our insurers have braced for the
impacts from the Affordable Care Act.”
Guarded optimism turns to growing confidenceJohn Mesenbrink, President of Mechanical-Hub.com
8 v i e g a v o i c e M A R C H 2 0 1 4 w w w . v i e g a . u s
Diversification — Business survival rates can
increase with expanded service offerings. “We have
learned firsthand that the way to survive and thrive in
any business climate is to diversify; if you offer many
things, and do them well, your chances of success are
much higher,” said Nelson.
Training/Education — With diversification comes
the need for training so contractors can successfully
install, maintain and troubleshoot systems. “Train better
and invest in newer tools that reduce labor costs,”
said Pollets. “Join trade associations such as the
Radiant Professionals Alliance (RPA), PHCC-National
Association and MCAA, for example, and get involved
in the great training resources available.”
Uptick in Bids — According to Yates, bidding
is the harbinger of things to come, and it's roughly
a six-month projection to where larger job bids are
concerned. “The pace and scope of bids has been on
the rise all year, so I remain confident that we
will see increased business in 2014," he said.
Moving Forward
Overall, in good times and bad, contractors should
move forward with confidence. This includes investing
in training and services that are so essential to a
company’s success. It also means continuing to analyze
your operations and look for ways to improve your
processes and productivity.
“This constant approach to smart business
management really makes a difference,” said Rivers.
“I am optimistic that 2014 will see steady growth,
provided that the healthcare act transitions well. I am
confident we will adjust to the new overhead and find
our sails filled with favorable and steady trade winds.
Innovate, adapt, overcome and succeed.”

Introducing Viega ProPressball valves for Zero Lead
Viega’s new Zero Lead ball valves set a new
standard for manufacturing systems intended for
potable water applications. Certified to the stringent
performance standards of ASME A112.4.14-2004 and
NSF 61-G with configurations varying in sizes from ½"
to 2", Viega ProPress ball valves are suitable for use in
lead-free press systems.
Only Viega offers a line of ball valves manufactured
from a material specifically designed for lead-free press
systems. Made from our unique silicon-bronze alloy,
engineered for press technology, these ball valves
provide the same quality, reliability and performance
as all Viega press fittings.
As with all Viega ProPress fittings, these new Zero
Lead ball valves offer the patented Viega Smart Connect
feature to help installers easily identify unpressed
fittings during pressure testing.
By adding two new ball valve configurations to the
existing line, Press x Female and Press x Hose thread,
Viega has ensured that they have a solution to suit
any designer or contractor’s needs. Viega’s new Zero
Lead ball valves now come standard with a high-quality
stainless steel ball for superior corrosion resistance in
potable water applications.
The 316 stainless steel ball featured in each of these
new ball valves comes standard, not as an upgrade.
Installers even have a choice of stems in the Press
x Press configuration ball valve, either Eco Brass®
or stainless steel, intended specifically for industrial
projects. With high-quality stainless steel, you can trust
the integrity of a piping system more than with other
materials like chrome.

PHCC and plumbing museum tell a trade- focused American story
Cars have museums. Sports heroes have museums.
Even television shows have museums. But did you
know that plumbers have a museum? Featured in PHCC
Online’s December e-newsletter, the National Plumbing
Museum in Watertown, MA, has recently started drawing
attention from unexpected sources—like the Wall Street
Journal, where the museum was featured on the front
page in December 2013.
The museum features exhibits like the history of
plumbing, plumbing systems, technology, the machine
shop and the museum library.
“We want to establish a plumbing time line,” said
John Cannistraro Jr., President of J.C. Cannistraro, LLC,
and PHCC of Greater Boston. “The museum will exhibit
the progression of plumbing through the centuries, from
the earliest pieces to the modern fixtures of today.”
Founded in 1979 as the American Sanitary &
Plumbing Museum in Worcester, MA, the Plumbing
Museum provides visitors history, trivia and displays
that offer an industry-specific perspective on American
history. According to its web site: “The museum stands
as a tribute to the plumbers, engineers and inventors
whose hard work and creative spirit have contributed so
much to the betterment of our society.”
The museum relocated from Worcester to Watertown
in 2008 and demonstrates the progress of plumbing
systems over the years. Designed and envisioned by
PHCC member J .C. Cannistraro with the operational
help from PHCC of Greater Boston, the Plumbing
Museum offers guests the opportunity to explore the
trade, appreciate history and experience a different kind
of American culture.

Change the industry by eliminating variables
Henry Ford’s development of the assembly line
changed the manufacturing world by eliminating
project variables and simplifying build processes.
By accomplishing these two goals, Ford was able to
produce a high-quality product his customers could
count on. Today, construction managers face the same
challenge: How can you accomplish more?
By far, the most common pipe-joining method
for black iron in the industry is threading but is it the
best method? With Viega MegaPress, you have the
opportunity to join black iron pipe in sizes up to 2"
without threading.
Metallurgy, physics, tribology, metal fabrication
and a little psychology reveal thousands of variables
in this process that ultimately determines the integrity
of a joint. Like Henry Ford discovered, variables
aren’t conducive to productivity or quality. Variables
like torque, hardness and material strength must
be consistent for a connection to perform to the
highest expectations.
Torque is a measure of force in action that causes an
object to rotate. Three different variables contribute to
the amount of torque applied, since torque is defined as
τ = r F sinθ where r
is the length of the
lever, F is the force
and θ is the angle
of force.
Hardness refers
to a material’s
ability to resist
shape change,
characterized
by toughness,
stiffness, ductility,
strength, elasticity and even viscosity. Strength relates
to how a material reacts to shape change.
As you apply torque to the pipe, the mating threads
pull on each other, stretching them. This stretching, also
called axial load, is the clamping force that locks the
threads together. The yield strength of the steel plays
a major role in axial load. These threads can flex and
distort and eventually fracture if over tightened.
Every material has its own stress-strain curve. Pipe
may be ASTM A53 while malleable fittings are ASTM
A197. Comparing the two curves illustrates a sweet
spot with enough elasticity to clamp the threads yet
enough permanent deformation to lock and create a
pressure seal. The grade, hardness and quality of steel
θ r
As the angle θ approaches
zero, the torque approaches zero
τ = r F sinθ
Dan Goellner, Viega Industrial Account Manager

will also influence how the threads mate. Low-quality
steel could be so brittle it cracks like a clay pot when
you give it that extra little pull.
Tribology (study of
friction) between the
mating threads plays
two major roles, friction
during assembly and
after assembly. Friction
during assembly can
account for as much
as 40% of the applied
torque, leaving only 60% of the energy for the
axial load.
All materials have a friction coefficient to calculate
the forces required to resist slipping. Dry steel on steel
can have a friction coefficient two to three times higher
than oiled steel. Is your pipe factory cut rusty and dry or
is it freshly cut and covered in cutting oil?
Metal shavings in the thread root can also have
a disastrous effect. You can end up carving threads
instead of tightening them.
Most NPT fittings require a thread sealant to create
the permanent pressure seal but sealants add more
variables. The type of seal you use can drastically
change the friction holding force between the
threads and the amount you use can change the
fit of the threads.
Steve Jobs said:
“You have to work hard
to get your thinking
clean to make it simple.
But it’s worth it in the
end because once
you get there, you can
move mountains.”
Henry Ford understood this concept long before
Steve Jobs said it. Eliminate the variables. Simplify your
processes. Provide a better, high-quality product for
your customers with the efficient use of your time.
Pipe threads will always have a place in our world
just as bricks and mortar will always be a trusted
building material. But if architects had not embraced
new steel frame technology, the Empire State Building
would be unremarkable at 22 stories instead of 102.
The Viega MegaPress fitting system for black iron
pipe, as well as Viega ProPress systems for copper
and stainless, represent the next step in pipe-joining
technology with benefits far beyond labor savings.
Maybe the industry is threading but you can make
the same connections more efficiently by eliminating the
variables. Consider the alternatives. You could change
the industry too.

In October 2013, Viega LLC appointed employee
Dalyn Cantrell as the new Vice President of Sales
and Marketing. Cantrell replaced Dave Garlow, who
accepted the role as Viega LLC President and CEO
earlier in the month.
“Dalyn’s loyalty, industry experience and
commitment to excellence make her the clear
choice as the next leader of the sales and marketing
organization,” Garlow said.
Cantrell has more than 30 years of experience in the
plumbing and heating industry, beginning her career
in 1983 in customer service for Vanguard. Throughout
her career at Vanguard, Cantrell worked as a customer
service representative, customer service manager,
assistant to the national sales manager, director of
code services, regional manager and finally national
sales manager.
In 2005, when Viega purchased Vanguard, Cantrell
moved into the position of director of field sales with
responsibilities that included directing and managing
eight regional managers and all district managers. In
2007, Cantrell became the director of Viega Inside
Sales where she developed the organization from a
vision to more than 20 people to support customers
and field sales organizations. At the beginning of
2013, Cantrell also took over the direction of the Viega
marketing operations team.
Along with becoming the vice president of sales
and marketing for Viega LLC, Cantrell has stepped
into the role of member of the Viega LLC Executive
Committee, the company’s eight-member
leadership team.
“Dalyn has demonstrated stellar leadership in all of
her roles with Vanguard and Viega,” Garlow said, “and
she will surely exceed the demands and expectations
of her new role.”

The United States’ legal system can sometimes
be difficult to navigate. Viega LLC has been fortunate
to employ a dedicated legal expert both as the new
General Counsel and as a part of the eight-member
executive leadership committee.
Viega LLC’s Chief Legal Counsel, Bill Seiler, retired
in December 2013 but not without entrusting his legacy
of legal excellence to a new addition to the Viega LLC
team. Jess Arbuckle joined the Viega LLC staff as the
Deputy General Counsel in April 2013 and spent the
remainder of 2013 learning about the company and the
industry from Seiler.
“Bill has been a great mentor,” Arbuckle said. “We
have a lot of similarities in our legal style and our legal
background but Bill has the manufacturing background
that is irreplaceable. His knowledge of the industry is
second to none.”
In January, Arbuckle stepped up to the role of
Viega LLC General Counsel and joined the Viega LLC
Executive Committee.
“Bill did a great job of helping people answer their
own questions instead of just telling them the answer,”
Arbuckle said. “His even-keeled, thoughtful analysis is
something I want to continue in the company.”
A native of Hutchinson, KS, Arbuckle graduated
from the University of Kansas with a degree in business
administration and received his law degree from the
University of Tulsa College of Law. He operated as a
practicing attorney for 16 years, focusing on complex
litigation matters. Then, he spent 14 years working for a
mutual insurance company as the General Counsel as
well as a member of its executive management team.
Though Arbuckle worked in a different industry,
the legal concepts behind both positions are similar.
Arbuckle sees his role as General Counsel as one of
a risk manager, a facilitator among colleagues and
departments and as the conscience of the company.
“I want employees to feel comfortable contacting
me with their questions,” Arbuckle said. “My job is to
represent Viega LLC and I want to be available to offer
assistance whenever needed.”

Brian Dwyer is a third-generation plumber. His
grandfather, James, founded Dwyer Plumbing in 1949
with a focus on residential plumbing. In 1979, Dwyer’s
father bought the business and set about expanding
it and adding excavating services. Brian bought the
business in turn in 2008.
Dwyer Plumbing has made a name for itself in
hotel and restaurant work. Because of its excavating
capabilities, Dwyer is often brought in during the earliest
stages of projects to clear sites and do earthwork.
“I get a lot of coordination done for the people
coming in to town,” Dwyer said. “I’ll hook them up with
good contractors I like working with.”
Dwyer came to the Hilton Garden Hotel job in
Erie, PA, through a previous relationship with the
building’s owners.
“We did a water park for them and a few other
hotels,” Dwyer said. “We bid the Hilton Garden Hotel
and by utilizing newer products we were able to save
them a lot of money.”
Among those new products was an innovative hot
water recirculation system from Viega. The inside-lying
recirculation system used the supply riser to insulate the
internal recirculation piping. A ⅜" ViegaPEX Ultra return
line is inside the riser and is insulated by warm water.
Water stays hotter longer (reducing energy consumption)
and remains in constant motion (reducing the risk of
Legionella and other waterborne pathogens).
But for Dwyer Plumbing, the real savings was in
labor. First, the system comes packaged as a kit, ready
to install. Second, it saved on fittings, pipe cores,
penetrations and caulking—basically everything involved
in installing a riser.
“It’s a five-story hotel,” Dwyer explained. “Each hole
for each riser [hot water, cold water and recirc] had to be
fire rated, each had to have a hanger system on it. So
right out of the gate, you eliminate one-third of that.”
And third, the system is installed using Viega’s
ProPress mechanical pipe joining system. The Viega
Innovation delivers value and labor savingsSteve Spaulding, Senior Production Editor, Contractor Magazine

ProPress system can make a watertight connection in
as little as five seconds. Dwyer has been an advocate of
the Viega ProPress system since first using it on a hotel
job in 1999. In the 14 years since, there have been no
callbacks on the piping he installed.
Dwyer Plumbing and Excavation cleared the site
and did the earthwork, which included a storm water
retention system.
“It was 500 feet long with five rows of five-foot pipes
underneath the ground,” Dwyer said.
Over the course of about a year Dwyer’s team of
technicians installed the mechanical systems for the
87,000-square-foot, 136-room hotel, including Bradford
White water heaters and boilers, Grundfos pumps and
Siemens controls, as well as all the faucets, fixtures
and toilets.
The crew ran 17 risers in the building, ½" to 3" Viega
ProPress fittings and transitioned at each of the six
floors using ½" ViegaPEX tubing. Capitalizing on the
best properties of copper and PEX, Dwyer Plumbing was
able to move quickly, completing one room in only 10
minutes time.
Additionally, “The whole entryway was snowmelted,
the porte-cochère,” Dwyer said. “We did an in-slab
PEX system of nearly 1,000 square feet with a
dedicated boiler.”
All the work went smoothly and construction was
completed on schedule. After a few weeks of tweaking
to balance the system, everything has been working just
as designed.

Hybrid solutions for commercial water systems
The same Viega press technology you trust for
commercial copper installations is also available for
PEX. You don’t have to bother with sweat or threaded
adapters anymore. Now you can easily transition from
Viega ProPress to Viega PEX tubing with a specially
designed Viega ProPress adapter. This unique adapter is
available only from Viega.
Many hotels and other commercial projects
around North America have installed a hybrid of Viega
ProPress and Viega PEX Press systems, eliminating
inconveniences during installation and providing
increased peace of mind after the job is done.
Donovan Morehouse, General Foreman at the
John E. Green Company, and his team installed Viega
ProPress and Viega PEX Press systems in the new
FireKeepers Casino Hotel near Battle Creek, MI. The
236,000-square-foot casino and hotel opened in
December 2012 and none of the connections made with
Viega systems have leaked.
Morehouse and his team installed nearly 30,000 feet
of ViegaPEX tubing with ViegaPEX Press polymer fittings
in sizes ½", ¾" and 1" for the potable water system
in the 280-room hotel. Morehouse also used Viega
ProPress copper systems in the mains. Morehouse had
installed Viega ProPress systems previously but the
FireKeepers project was his first experience with Viega
PEX Press fittings.
“Every material has its place,” Morehouse said. “With
the time frame we had, I don’t think we could have done
it with individual copper tubing. We all like right angles.
PEX may go the way the crow flies but it gave us the
opportunity to move faster and be done quicker. It
made a difference.”
Another example of a hybrid Viega solution that
saved time on installation is Dorado Beach, a Ritz-
Carlton Reserve property in Puerto Rico. Envisioned
by a team of globally acclaimed architects and
designers, Dorado Beach is a unique hotel that is
engineered to be sustainable.
Mauricio Ballesteros is the Project Manager for
Bermudez & Longo Diaz Masso (BLDM), as well as
the mechanical and electrical contractor for the
Ritz-Carlton Reserve.
“Viega has helped us to achieve our time goals,”
Ballesteros said, “by making the installations quicker
and easier with no stress of possible leaks.”
Built to LEED® Silver standards on the footprint

of Laurance S. Rockefeller’s original RockResort,
framed by coral reefs and embraced by a lush tropical
forest, Dorado Beach will be one of the top 100 most
sustainable hotels in the world. The Ritz-Carlton
Reserve intends to maintain the island’s natural beauty
while offering luxurious accommodations that are not
only world class but also sustainable. And all plumbing
systems for the entire hotel’s guestrooms, spa facilities
and residences are being installed using Viega ProPress
and Viega PEX systems.
Combining Viega
ProPress and Viega PEX
Press systems doesn’t
just save installation
time. Whenever you
install a Viega system,
you can know for sure
that you have the
support and reliability
of a global leader. Reliability was the deciding factor for
Kinetics, a full-service mechanical contractor in Arizona,
when they had to choose which system to install at
Casino Arizona’s Talking Stick Resort.
Casey Reed, Project Director for Casino Arizona, did
his own research on different press fitting options.
“Viega was the only press system that proved
consistent and reliable,” Reed said, “and we needed
that reassurance. We pursued a value engineering
proposal to the architect and engineer and showed
them it was not only a labor saver but a cost saver.”
Casino Arizona and the Talking Stick Resort
encompasses one million square feet of combined
space. Kinetics installed Viega ProPress copper
fittings in sizes ½" to 4", Viega ProPress stainless steel
fittings and pipe in sizes ½" to 4", Viega ProPress
stainless fittings and pipe and ViegaPEX tubing in
sizes ½" and ¾".
“We installed probably 700 feet of Viega ProPress
stainless in a day and a half,” said Kinetics Labor
Manager John Niedosik. “It would have taken us
weeks to do that same 700-foot section with a welded
system. Not only that, welded connections take special
equipment—argon, a trained welder, a lot of preparation
and tools that are expensive.”
ViegaPEX tubing supplies the water service inside
the hotel rooms, where copper lines run down the
hallways. Kinetics made copper-to-PEX connections
with customizable Viega ProPress manifolds. The
flexibility of ViegaPEX tubing and design options of
Viega ProPress manifolds allowed Kinetics to keep up
with frequently changing design plans.
Whether your next project is a hotel or another type
of commercial installation, consider a Viega hybrid
solution for the potable water system. With Viega’s
unique adapters, you can transition between PEX and
copper easily and, as always, Viega press systems
offer the patented Viega Smart Connect feature to help
installers easily identify unpressed connections.

Radiant heating for Tavern on the Green
Few restaurants in American history have had as
great an influence on popular culture as the Tavern
on the Green on the Upper West Side of New York
City’s Central Park. From its original opening in 1934,
it has appeared or been mentioned in several movies,
multiple television shows and has even played a role in
commercial advertising.
During the financial crisis of 2009, the Tavern on the
Green closed its doors. Nearly
a year later, the city reopened
the building as a visitor’s
center and gift store but, in
2012, a pair of restaurateurs
from Philadelphia won the bid
to redesign and reintroduce
New York City’s famous
landmark. The only problem
was the condition of the
building. It needed to be
completely renovated.
Vanguard HVAC Technologies of Brooklyn, NY,
was selected to install the air conditioning and heating
systems in the new Tavern on the Green, including
boilers, chillers, air handler units, heat recovery units
and unit heaters. Vanguard HVAC Technologies also
installed radiant heating in the terrace, which features a
glass-enclosed dining area with views of Central Park.
Viega ProRadiant systems were listed in the building
specifications, so Vanguard HVAC Technologies installed
1,500 square feet of ViegaPEX Barrier tubing with
insulated panels, as well as stainless manifolds and
manifold cabinets.
“This was our first time using Viega,” said Robert
Stewart, Steamfitter Foreman for Vanguard HVAC
Technologies. “I have a lot of years of knowledge in
the business, and basically the Viega systems were
very simple, very easy. They worked great. I was
disappointed there wasn’t more to do.”
Stewart explained that
despite his years of experience
he still prefers to understand
a system completely before
installing it and he appreciated
the availability of local Viega
sales team members who took
the time to help.
“Even though you’re
familiar with the product, you
still want to have a guideline
of that manufacturer’s
procedure,” he said. “I did have a couple of questions
here and there, which they answered quickly. They were
at the ready. If I needed anything, literally within the hour
they were back to me with the answer.”
As with any other radiant floor heating installation,
ideally the entire project is on hold until the tubing is laid
and the concrete floor is poured. The faster the radiant
heating portion of the job can be completed, the more
quickly the rest of the project can get under way.

“Installing the radiant tubing was one of the easiest
things I had to do on the job,” Stewart said. “The
insulated panels are great because they line everything
up. It’s a great product to work with.”
Viega offers complete radiant heating and cooling
systems backed with unparalleled support. Whether
your project is industrial, commercial or residential,
Viega offers a pre-engineered solution that will help
you reduce installation time and balance the total cost
of the project.
Radiant panel systems are easy to install and Viega
offers a variety of panel options, insulated, uninsulated,
assembled or unassembled. Whatever panel system
you choose to install with ViegaPEX Barrier tubing,
you will reduce installation time compared to other types
of systems.
Viega’s insulated panels, which Vanguard HVAC
Technologies installed at the Tavern on the Green, are
a versatile radiant option that incorporates insulation,
vapor barrier and a grid system to secure tubing all in
one convenient product. Compatible with ViegaPEX
Barrier tubing in sizes ⅜", ½" and ⅝", Viega insulated
panels allow you to walk the tubing in easily. You’ll even
save on material cost because you don’t need fasteners.
“I definitely recommend it for its ease of installation,”
Stewart said. “To anyone thinking about installing
radiant, Viega would be a company you should look at.”

Egg producer expands production with Viega ProPress
North America's largest hard-boiled egg producer
specializes in the production, packaging and
distribution of high-quality egg products. Established
in 1936 as a source for live chickens, eggs and cream
in Southern Indiana, the company eventually expanded
to the grading and packaging of its own private-label
eggs. This family-owned business's legacy of quality
and innovation has been carried on through the years to
present day.
As the company continued to grow, they needed to
expand their facilities. For that, they turned to Peyronnin
Construction Company of Evansville, IN. Peyronnin,
which began operating in 1947, is a family-owned
business with a vast portfolio of quality work in Indiana.
Peyronnin has worked alongside the egg producer for
many years as their company has increased production.
The company's expansion has been a design-build
project, with Peyronnin doing all the mechanical and
general construction work.
“Our biggest challenge we faced was that the
line couldn’t shut down while we were working,”
said Richard Lasher, Vice President of Mechanical
Construction for Peyronnin. “So the installers had to
work around the equipment that was still operating.”
Lasher is in charge of the mechanical construction
portion of the company’s projects. He’s been with
Peyronnin for 10 years but has worked in the industry
for more than 20 years. According to Lasher, the
production used to be entirely manual, where a machine
would cook the eggs and a team of workers would peel
them by hand. Now, the company has machines that do
all the work.
“The first phase of the project was completed in
2009 where Peyronnin installed piping for two egg
cookers and peelers, both capable of cooking and
peeling 20,000 eggs every hour,” Lasher said. “After
that phase was complete, the owner decided to
increase production again.”
Peyronnin installed the domestic water lines and
air piping lines with Viega ProPress for stainless and
copper in sizes ½" to 2".
2 4 v i e g a v o i c e M A R C H 2 0 1 4 w w w . v i e g a . u s
“The building and the processing was designed for
four machines and he decided to put five in,” Lasher
said. “So now he’s cooking and peeling 100,000 eggs
an hour.”
According to Lasher, the shutdown period during
the project was minimal, a one-week period.
Viega ProPress systems are uniquely suited for food
and beverage installations because they allow installers
to make secure, reliable connections without flame.
Viega’s revolutionary press technology allows installers
to make secure connections quickly without draining
down a line. In less than seven seconds, an installer
can connect either copper or stainless in sizes up to 4"
and know for sure that the connection will last.
“It was a confined, tight area,” Lasher said. “With
Viega ProPress we were able to use a smaller crew and
get more work done. We could do the work we needed
to do with a smaller crew.”
One of the unique features of Viega ProPress fittings
is the innovative Smart Connect feature, which helps
installers easily identify unpressed connections during
pressure testing. Designed into the fitting itself, the
Viega Smart Connect feature allows water or air to flow
past the sealing element of a fitting if a connection
needs to be pressed. This helps installers quickly
spot connections that need pressing so they can walk
away from the job knowing that all joints have been
made securely.
Since installers don’t need joining materials to make
connections, the inside of the pipeline is clean and free
of toxins, which also reduces the time required to flush
the system once it’s completed.
Peyronnin was one of the first companies in
Southern Indiana to install Viega ProPress. They first
used it in the Vanderburgh County jail.
“Viega ProPress was everything they said it would
be,” Lasher said. “We’ve been using it for nine years
and we really haven’t had any big issues.”

The opportunity to join stainless steel easily
with Viega ProPress systems opened the door for
VIP Plumbing in Cleveland, OH, to install new
chemical transport lines for a chemical company in
Macedonia, OH.
Royal Chemical wanted to replace existing process
piping for chemical transport between its storage tanks
and mixing tanks with stainless steel pipe, as well as
add processing lines to its facility. Since the majority of
the plant was already installed with stainless steel for its
other systems, choosing another stainless steel system
was an easy decision. But VIP Plumbing got the job
because they could offer quick, flameless installation
using stainless Viega ProPress.
“If Royal Chemical had wanted welded stainless
steel, we wouldn’t have been the ones to do the
installation,” said Paul Episcopo, President of VIP
Plumbing. “VIP Plumbing would not have even
submitted a bid on the project if it had to be welded.
By using pressing to join the piping, the labor was cut
at least in half. Royal Chemical didn’t have to shut
down its operation and it was easier to get the pressing
tool into smaller spaces where welding would not have
been an option.”
VIP Plumbing installed approximately 3,000 feet of
Viega 316 stainless steel pipe for use with chemical
processing equipment. They also installed 2" to 2 ½"
Viega 316 stainless steel lines for five mixing tanks and
used approximately 130 fittings including tees, 90° and
45° fittings, couplings and 12 three-piece ball valves.
The process line installation at Royal Chemical
was the first project where VIP Plumbing used Viega
ProPress for stainless. The company had previously
rented the pressing tool for various copper tubing
installation projects to increase time savings or use in
environments where water could not be shut off for long
periods of time.
“For this project, purchasing the pressing tool was
a good investment for us and it’s also opened up our
capabilities to include work on stainless steel systems,”
explained Episcopo. “It’s convenient now that we have
the tool. We have done other projects with pressing and
we can use the same tool on multiple kinds of pipe.”
For the installation, VIP Plumbing used a combination
of fittings with the standard EPDM sealing element
and the FKM sealing element for increased resistance
against corrosive chemicals.
“Because Royal Chemical transports caustic
chemical through the lines, we knew that they needed
fittings with highly chemical-resistant sealing elements,”
explained Episcopo. “We worked with our Viega
representative to make sure that the sealing elements
were approved for use with the specific chemicals used
on those lines.”
Viega ProPress for stainless proved to be ideal for
Royal Chemical’s needs due to the chemical resistance
of the materials, as well as the safety and time savings
that the flameless aspect of the system offered.
“By using Viega ProPress on this project, we kept
Royal Chemical from having to shut down for long
More opportunities opens doors with Viega ProPress

periods of time and avoided the need for hot permits
that would have been required if the pipe had been
installed with welding,” explained Episcopo.
Rocky Iammarino, the plumber who installed Viega
ProPress at Royal Chemical, was impressed with the
quality of Viega ProPress for stainless three-piece
ball valves.
“The original valve that we installed on the nitric
acid line didn’t work correctly,” Iammarino said. “Our
Viega rep introduced us to the three-piece ball valve that
worked perfectly. The three-piece ball valve was perfect
for the corrosive chemicals, like the nitric acid. It can
be locked and if any of them ever need to be fixed, the
valves won’t have to be taken out.”
During the first phase of the installation, Iammarino
installed support brackets and five new lines to replace
the original welded stainless steel lines as well as
sagging PVC lines. In other phases of the project,
approximately 12 lines were installed.
“The security against leaks that the system provides
is extremely important with chemical transporting,” said
Iammarino. “I was alerted to a fitting that hadn’t been
pressed yet with the Smart Connect feature that ensures
no fitting is left unpressed, and after that fitting was
pressed, we pressure tested the lines and there weren’t
any leaks.”
The confidence that Viega ProPress provided,
along with the fact that the system is a flameless way
to join pipe, allowed VIP Plumbing to not only complete
the installation of the chemical transport lines, but
also established the company’s capabilities in the
industrial market.
“We are looking forward to getting involved with
additional commercial and industrial projects that involve
stainless and may not have been in our repertoire prior
to our experience with Viega ProPress for stainless,”
said Episcopo.

How do I bond a gas piping system installed with
Viega MegaPressG or Viega ProPressG fittings?
An electrical bond is required by all major fuel gas
codes to protect against the risk of an electrical
shock. Metallic piping serving gas-fired appliances
can potentially become energized if a fault were
to occur in the electrical circuitry that feeds them.
Gas piping is considered to be bonded through the
grounded conductor of the circuit supplying the
appliance. The mechanical press of properly installed
Viega MegaPressG or Viega ProPressG fittings
provides continuous metal-to-metal contact between
the pipe and fittings. Electrical bonding is maintained
through a Viega press connection.
How do you determine how much heat is moving
through a heating system or through a particular
zone or circuit?
By understanding and using the Universal Hydronics
Formula, we can properly design a heating system
and size its components appropriately.
Universal Hydronics Formula - BTUH= GPM X ∆T X
8.33 X 60 X 1 where:
BTUH = the load of the heating system
GPM = gallons per minute
∆T = the difference in water temperature between
supply as return under design conditions
8.33 = the weight of a gallon of water in lbs.
60 = minutes in an hour
1 = the specific gravity of water
With a little bit of math we can determine what
is happening to the fluid in a system. With this
information we can select components that will allow
it to function properly and efficiently.
Why does the Viega ManaBloc have three
supply ports?
The Viega ManaBloc has two cold supply ports
and one hot supply port. In a typical new plumbing
installation, the cold water main will feed the Viega
ManaBloc through the bottom supply port, filling
the cold chamber that flows through and exits the
top cold supply port to run over and feed the water
heater. The hot line from the water heater would return
back to the hot supply port on the Viega ManaBloc,
filling the hot water chamber. You do not necessarily
have to use both cold supply ports. In a typical
addition or renovation project, installers will feed the
water heater from the cold main and pick up the Viega
ManaBloc through the top cold supply port. Then,
they cap off the bottom cold supply port with an
approved supply port cap offered by Viega.
What is heat loss and why is it important to a
heating system?
Heat loss refers to the amount of energy that a
structure loses through air leakage or conduction
through construction materials. Heat is lost through
any partition that separates heated and unheated
space. Windows, doors, fireplaces and exhaust fans
are all additional sources of heat loss and add to an
overall structure’s heating load. When designing a
heating system, it is important to conduct a heat loss
study of the structure in order to properly size not only
the power plant but also the emitters for each area. A
bedroom with two windows may require more energy
to heat than a room twice its size without any glass.
An undersized heating system will not be able to keep
up with the demand on the coldest days of the year.
Conversely, an oversized heating system will cost
more to install as well as operate. Viega’s Radiant
Design team will conduct heat loss calculations for
radiant installations of any size. For more information,
