Nathan MeehanSPE President 2016

Welcome

EAGE President’s welcome

On behalf of the European Association of Geo-scientists and Engineers (EAGE), it is with great pleasure that I announce our premier annual event: the 78th EAGE Conference and Exhibition. It is set to take place from 30 May – 2 June 2016, in the beautiful city of Vienna, Austria. As with previous EAGE annual events, Vienna 2016 promises to be a worthwhile and memorable event for all attending.

The theme ‘Efficient Use of Technology – Unlocking Potential‘ adopted for our 2016 annual meeting couldn’t have come at a better time. As efficiency in technology usage ultimately reduces overall costs, this fea-ture is highly desirable especially in these hard times to ensure eco-nomic viability.

The usual EAGE Forum will tackle the very timely topic of ‘The Future of the Oil Industry in Light of the Recent Oil Prices'. We will also feature two Execu-tive Sessions on ‘Black Sea – Regional Focus’ and ‘Unconventionals outside North America’ during the conference. A balanced ensemble of speakers representing industry and academia will take part in both these sessions.

EAGE continues to cater to and promote the active participation of vari-ous groups in the geosciences and engineering realms, such as Women in Geoscience and Engineering, Young Professionals and students. In line with EAGE’s traditions, the 2016 meeting will feature focused activities for these groups including fora and the Student Programme, themed 'Perform & Peak'.

The meeting will have something for everyone attending. I am confident that you will find the technical programme rich and educational as it cov-ers a wide spectrum of technical and scientific topics. I am also delighted to announce that SPE EUROPEC will be part of our 2016 show. As al-ways, the exhibition is expected to be vibrant and stimulating, providing companies the opportunity to showcase their technologies and allowing professionals time to reconnect with old, or even make new, friends. This will be augmented with a number of social programmes.

The Austrian capital, Vienna, is indeed an ideal venue for any event of the caliber of the EAGE annual meeting. Delegates attending the meeting do not want to miss the opportunity to indulge in Vienna’s culture-rich environment. Finally, I thank all who have been working hard to make Vienna 2016 a remarkable success. Special thanks go to the Local Advi-sory Committee, to the EAGE Students Affair Committee and to the Tech-nical Programme Committee. I also thank the EAGE staff for all their hard work. I personally look forward to greeting you there.

Wednesday 1 JuneExecutive Session on 'The Black Sea - Regional Focus'Time: 08:30 – 11:30 hrs

Chairmen: J.J. Martin Bañon (REPSOL)

G. Tari (OMV Upstream)

The Black Sea Basin becoming an emerging deepwater basin, has brought great challenges to the NOCs and IOCs in maintaining exploration suc-cess in the region. Historically, oil, gas-condensate and gas production was restricted to the shallow waters of the Black Sea shelf. Currently we see a trend in moving from the shelf to deepwater. Additionally it is the general advance in technology over the past few decades that has increased our collective ability to identify, drill, appraise and develop ad-ditional hydrocarbons, leading to dramatic increases in production before the end of the decade. Advances in completion technologies, 4D seismics, high-pressure drilling technologies, extended reach drilling and a deeper understanding of the Black Sea pressure and fluid systems will play key roles in future discoveries and development projects in various parts of the basin. This session will explore the current exploration trends in the broader Black Sea Basin, in the light of their particular challenges.

Conference EveningTime: 19:30 – 23:30 hrs

All registered full delegates and registered family members are invited to this wonderful evening.

Thursday 2 JuneExecutive Session on 'Unconventionals Outside North America'Time: 08:30 – 11:30 hrs

Chairman: B. Glover (MOL)

Tuesday 31 MayEAGE Forum on 'The Future of the Oil Industry in Light of the Recent Oil Prices'Time: 08:30 – 12:10 hrs

The Forum will discuss that the predictability of oil prices between 2010 and mid 2014 at 100USD/bbl levels has proven wrong and developed into a highly volatile oil price behavior between 40 and 60 USD/bbl. The industry currently undergoes a profound change to face the new reality. Most companies (re)act very similarly: postponing investment decisions, abandon development projects, divesting assets, cutting exploration ex-penditures and manpower.

Long term view versus short term necessities, what is the right balance? Should we adopt business models to shorter turnaround times? Can the industry maintain output on the medium to long run?

All questions which keep NOCs, IOCs and service companies busy these days. We will see the production effect of fewer investments only in sev-eral years. The discussion if the world actually will need all the oil in the ground picks up. Will oil be replaced or will low oil prices fuel consump-tion and win the competition against other fuels?

Please note the executive sessions and the EAGE Forum are open to all conference delegates. Check our website regularly for up-to-date information.
