I was lucky to get out on the water on “Second Wind” for a nice afternoon sail in February with Director Tom McNeill (photos on left) and member Will Bellis. Thanks to Marty Fuller, Barry Stewart, Bill Dyer and others for keeping up the “Second Wind” boat maintenance and improvements so that the members can enjoy the Club’s boat.

Wishing everyone fun and safe sailing. I look forward to seeing you soon.

Jr. Staff Commodore Report

by Mary Matakovich, Interim Jr. Staff Commodore

Ahoy! The Staff Commodores will be serving in the Junior

Staff Commodore position this year. I will participate in the position for the first three months; then, Bill Dyer will take the next four months, and then Ray Mattison from August- November and I will end the year serving the month of December.

Membership Committee —Thank You! It’s been such a pleasure working with this group. First I would like to thank John Stocksdale for serving as our Clerk, ensuring that everyone who attended our Orientation Meetings were given an application with sponsor forms, as well he willingly added a lot of

great questions to be answered at the orientation. Our Historian Pete Kelley gave an overview of the the club’s history beginning with the actual creation of the clubhouse to our current status as a thriving club of 200 members. The Interview Team, Jeff Blauer, Steve Dahl, Lauren Krup, Tom McNeill, and Rod Valine, spent quite a bit of time, paper-screening, and prioritizing the nineteen applicants to be interviewed. The applicants were outstanding. The Team held interviews over a two day period. Our Commodore Barry Stewart asked that we provide a prioritized list for the Board’s consideration at their March 5 meeting.

He will be contacting the Board-approved new members shortly thereafter. It will be my responsibility to follow-up

with those not selected this time. Please assist us in congratulating the new members and in encouraging those who were not selected this time to continue to be involved with us in this coming year.

Any questions, feel free to give me a call, 805-595-2526.

At your service, always,—Mary h

Recently, I send out a message in the “Scuttlebutt” requesting members to volunteer to serve on the House Committee specific to ongoing building maintenance projects and plan tasks for our annual cleanup day. I received a healthy response and want to thank those who contacted me. A meeting is scheduled for Wednesday March 18, 6:30 p.m., and for those of you interested there is still time to step up.

As a reminder for those of you who want to reserve the club this year, to save time be sure to check the calendar on the SLYC website at www. Slyc.org and make sure the date is not a non-reservation date or has already been reserved. The rules and procedures for reserving use of the club can be found on the website, as well as the back pages of the Club directory. Please submit your reservation and payment to Ken San Filippo, Rear Commodore, in a timely way 7-10 days prior to a board meeting, allowing time to ensure your request is processed and placed on the Board agenda.

Good news to announce, the club has partnered with 805 Webcams to host a webcam at SLYC at no cost. The high-definition motorized webcam will showcase the ocean conditions within the vicinity and Avila Beach itself. There will be no club privacy concerns since the webcam will be showing the views of the beach and ocean, no deck or members will be seen at the club. The webcam installation is presently in the works with a launch date prior to Opening Day April 18. More information will be made available via the “Scuttlebutt” and the “Foghorn” as the project nears completion.

Sincerely, —Ken h

Ahoy!As February draws to an end, a query of club activities

has kept many of us busy. A thank you shout out to our members who helped make these past months club activities i.e.: Friday social nights, Brunches, Dinners, Wet Wednesdays, lake races, and the past Commodore dinner all successful events.

The year is young! Spring is before us, and I’m one looking forward to the longer days and warmer weather to enjoy the many club activities planned for 2020. There are many activities that have volunteer spaces unfilled and need membership to sign up so there not cancelled. Please refer to the TimeToSignUp sheet posted on the web site, as you all know the success of these events required your involvement.

The month of March is planning time for our Opening Day, April 18. But before then lets get the Yacht Club in ship shape order…I will need your help for the annual spring Clean Up day set for Saturday April 4, 2020. If you are interested in assisting with this major club event, please contact me, as there are lots of tasks to complete.

Port Report

by Michael Ginn, Port Captain

Greeting to all!As your new Port Captain, I continue to learn a lot

about our great SLYC and our neighbors at the Port San Luis Harbor District. Thanks to you all for your input and mentoring with my new role—I appreciate the help!

This month I wanted to share some information from the Port San Luis Harbor District website as awareness and help for our members.

The Port has an awesome live webcam available for SLYC members to use for views of the Harford Landing, boatyard and many of the moorings in the Bay. The webcam is available via the Port’s website at https://www.portsanluis.com. Access to the live webcam can be requested by sending an e-mail to the Port Administrator at [email protected]. I just requested access today and received approval right away—enjoying views of our beautiful coast while I am away at a business meeting in Atlanta.

Also, a quick reminder for contacting the Port for water taxi service or if needed, the Harbor Patrol in an emergency situation:

Water Taxi Harbor PatrolPhone: 805-305-4796 In an emergency call 911 Phone: 805-595-5435 Marine Channels: 12 or 16 (VHF)

I was able to attend the January 28th Port San Luis Harbor District Commissioners meeting—they are very busy at the Port and had several interesting items on the agenda for discussion including:

• Harford Landing Parking Time Limits• Harford Pier Terminus Restaurant Lease Site Location• Avila Pier Repair Plan • Trailer Boat Launch Fuel Line Replacement

The next Harbor Commission meeting is February 25, at 6:00 p.m. and I will work to keep you all informed of activities at the Port.

Thanks and stay safe!—Mikeh

Cruising News

by Lettie Fuller, Cruising Captain

Ahoy members! On January 28 we held a meeting at the Club House

to discuss our upcoming cruise to the Chesapeake Bay in June. There are still opportunities to join this event. Contact me if you want more information.

February’s Wet Wednesday included a review of all of last year’s cruising events in a slideshow prepared by Michael Dobrzensky. We had lots of laughs and great memories of all the cruising events in 2019. For those of you who missed Wet Wednesday, the slideshow is available in the SLYC.org website and look under cruising to view.

Next month we will mail out post cards to all Members that include a calendar of all cruising and racing scheduled for this year. Join us on the water for some great sailing and memories.

Happy Sailing

Fleet News

by Marty Fuller, Volunteer Race P.R.O.

Ahoy!On February 9, we held the first lake races of the

year. The races went off without a hitch; the lake level was at approximately 50%, the weather was mild, the chase boat ran well, and we had four sailboats on the water competing in the races.

Chris Barrett took first place in the Multihull Division, and Charlie Nichols took first place in the Mono 100+ Division. The

race results are posted on the Club’s webpage. Kent Burnett provided some entertainment with his demonstration on how to turtle a Hobie 18. Fortunately, there was no damage to vessel or crew, and the Hobie was righted after a brisk swim.

In the absence of a Sail Fleet Captain this year, I served as Race P.R.O., and was assisted by the Race Committee of Darrel Rundstrom, Michael Dobrzensky, and Bill and Kate McInerney. Steve Dahl served as Race Support, and provided our crew with a great lunch and refreshments. Note to future Race Committees; recruit Steve for Race Support, you won’t be sorry. Thanks to the Chase Boat Crew; Dave Lipanovich and Rod Valine.

Reid Hester has volunteered to serve as Race P.R.O. for the March 8, and April 5, 2020 lake races, but there are still openings for Race Committee volunteers for both of these dates, so please signup to help.

Happy Sailing,– Marty h

Hello SLYC members. I want to give a shout out to members Brian and

Kathy Metcalfs’ film maker son-in-law—Kellen Keene for making a phenomenal movie that was featured in the Santa Barbara Film Festival last month. By Hand, the film, featured two Pismo Beach locals—23-year old twin brothers, Ryan and Casey Higginbotham, as they conquered a monumental feat. The brothers took over 200 days to paddle 2,200 miles

from Ketchikan Alaska to Tijuana Mexico on paddle boards by hand—no paddles. They braved extreme conditions including weather, sharks, bears, physical challenges and mental anguish. It was a story of extra ordinary determination and drive and was truly inspirational. It will be coming to the San Luis Film Festival in March. I hope you all get a chance to see the film.

To see a clip of it now go t o : h t t p s : / / w w w. y o u t u b e. c o m /watch?v=ZAFMPk1GALM

Sr. Staff Commodore Report

by Chris Barrett, Sr. Staff Commodore

Ahoy!Wave Sailing Weekend! March 7th-8th at Lopez

Lake.Come sail with us at Lopez Lake. The main purpose of this event is to get any interested club members trained and/or certified on one of the San Luis Yacht Club’s Hobie Wave Sailboats, but this is also a great opportunity to come out for a fun day at the lake. Club catamaran sailors will be on hand with at least one wave, available to offer small boat training

through advanced catamaran race coaching.

Saturday:Take this opportunity to try out a wave without obligation.

However, preference will be given to members signing up to get certified for the small boat program. Basic BBQ lunch will be provided for members that RSVP. Hang out and camp with fellow members!

Sunday:Come out early, (or camp with us) for an early hike

above the lake. We’ll have a rules quiz/ scenario chat before skippers meeting and then get out on the water to race! The Hobie wave is fastest with one person on board, but can be sailed with 3-4. Other competitors often need crew as well! Come out and help with Race Committee or let us know if you’re looking for a ride.

Quinn and Diane Plante’s daughter Kaitlyn Plante was in a terrifying accident in San Francisco on January 7, 2020. She continues to heal, but still has a long road ahead of her. She will soon be starting physical therapy and consulting with reconstructive surgeons. Somehow she maintains a positive attitude despite the hardship. Kaitlyn writes: “I’m grateful for my loving family, who have cared for me day and night. I’m grateful for my friends, who have kept me smiling and laughing when all I wanted to do was cry. I’m grateful to walk and talk and FINALLY move my neck again. I’m grateful just to see another sunset over my beautiful city. My life may have been turned upside down, but my heart still beats, full of love for all those that helped me along the way.”

Kaitlyn, Quinn and Diane appreciate your continued support through this trying time. If you would like to donate, please visit her Gofundme page https://www.gofundme.com/f/kaitlyn-plante " (See previous Scuttlebutt Sunshine article about Kaitlyn for more details.)

Tim Waag has been in and out of hospitals for months with a lingering infection since August 2019. It started when he took a spill from his mountain bike in July 2019, requiring back surgery which resulted in complications and an infection. He was again admitted to Sierra Vista on 2/2 and then taken by ambulance to UCSF Medical Center on February 3 due to a staph infection. He had surgery on his back again on February 4, is on massive antibiotics, and is hopeful that the staph infection will be annihilated. In speaking with him on February 7, he sounded like he was in good spirits in spite of his difficult situation and just wanted the SLYC members to know that he is thinking of all of us. Let’s all send him our love and support. You may email him at [email protected] or his wife Susan at [email protected]. You may also mail him a card to UCSF Medical Center at 505 Parnassus Ave., San Francisco, CA 94143.
