Editorial…...

Welcome to the 100th edition of View from the Hill; we hope you continue to find it useful. A big thanks to the advertisers who have been with us since Issue No 1 (April/May 1999): Mick Taylor, Mick Feather, Chris Martin and The Railway Inn. Thank you also of course to our current advertisers and contributors, without whom what would we do?

Carly, from the Railway Inn and Annie Houghton, with a little help from THREDS, have been very busy organising an Alzheimer's charity event for Saturday August 27th. With lots of support from the village lets hope this is a huge success. All the details on the inside front cover...

On a different matter: What’s happened to the public footpath which runs from the top of Lincoln Lane (we know it better as Middle Lane) down to the Bentley and on to Pennells? It is clearly marked at the bottom end but village signs seem to have disappeared. This used to be a pleasant walk but now its very overgrown in places and completely ploughed up across the field. Lets have it back please!

Our village Bowls Club are having a somewhat mixed season at the moment; top of the Wednesday Cliff League, struggling a little in the Lincoln leagues but on a great cup run. We wish them plenty of good luck.

Finally lets finish the way the 1st edition started:

“Anyone, clubs and organisations are invited to keep the village informed with any news that may be of interest to fellow villagers. If anyone has anything from ‘Auntie Betty’s tart recipe, a poem or even Bon Voyage neighbour please let us know….if printable we shall be glad to do so!”

Loose THREDS - The Village Walking Group Walk 11. The Viking Way and the Cliff Villages. Thursday 14th July

The 147 mile Viking Way runs from Barton on Humber in the north to Oakham in the south. The Cliff Villages (over 40 in total) are those that sit on the Lincoln Edge or Lincoln Cliff (sometimes known as the Trent Cliff) which is the escarpment running through the western side of Lincolnshire. Ambition isn’t our strong point so only three Cliff Villages and about 2.5 miles of the Viking Way (a 5 mile round trip) made up Walk 11.

Thanks to the reliability of the group, the timings for the day were perfect. We met at 10.00 at Whisby Nature Park car park, started walking at 10.30 as planned, finished walking just after 12.30 and were only seconds late in getting to our 1.00 pm lunch booking at the Railway.

We were already on the Viking Way when we parked outside Wellingore Hall. The road section was completed quickly and, as we reached the Lincoln Cliff edge in perfect walking weather, the views to the west were spectacular. We continued walking north and, after a slight detour when the leader lost his way, reached Boothby Graffoe to enjoy the delightful stone buildings in this wonderful Cliff Village. From here, we retraced our steps and enjoyed the views from a different perspective, arriving back at Wellingore after yet another very enjoyable walk.

As always, the food, beverages and company at the Railway Inn were excellent.

This was the first Loose THREDS walk of our second year as a group. We raised a glass to celebrate our first anniversary.

The next walk will be the Views from the Hill walk (see separate entry), taking in some of the best views within the parish. It cov-ers routes we’ve used before but will specifically concentrate on the views (What is this life if full of care we have no time to stand and stare). It will be quite long, probably between 5 and 6 miles, so a 10.00 start will be needed to cover the distance and enjoy the views. The date will be Thursday 25th August.

100 Views from the Hill by Toni Magri

There have been 100 issues of View from the Hill but are there also 100 Views from the Hill? Almost certainly, these are some of my favourites, in no particular order. Most are reasonably accessible, one (View 10) requires a walk of about a mile, some ( Views 2,3 and 4) require significant walking.

View 1: At sunset, on a clear evening, between April and September, stand on the corner where Lincoln Lane meets Station Road. The sun setting over the western quadrant of the parish must be one of the best views around.

View 2 : At any time, particularly at dusk when the cathedral is lit up, follow the footpath through Stocking Wood. At the junction, turn south along the side of Tunman and Housham Woods and continue along the path towards Morton to grid reference SK889640. Turn and look to the north east and you will see Lincoln Cathedral sitting on top of Thorpe on the Hill.

View 3: Retrace your steps from View 2 towards Housham Wood. This path is the highest point in the parish. About half way along, stand and look round through 360 degrees. These are the most extensive views in the village. The horizons to the left and right are several miles away.

View 4: When the trees are in leaf, go through Stocking Wood and then turn to return to the village. Stop just before leaving the wood. Look towards the village, which will be framed by trees.

View 5: At any time of year and any time of day in daylight, stand at the first bend at the top of Clay Lane. Look south west over the ancient woodland of Tunman Wood, could be my favourite place in the parish. (My bed and the Railway are other contenders.)

View 6: Stand on Fosse Lane, when it’s dark, from mid December to early January. Look at the church and the Christmas tree.

View 7: Follow the footpath from Main Street to the wide track below what was the Scott Farmhouse. Look slightly upwards in a wide sweep from north west to south east and enjoy a classic, Lincolnshire big sky view. This is best on a clear day with the sun in the east.

View 8: When the trees are in leaf, stand at the crossroads on Station Road. Look in all directions and be amazed at the density of trees that we have in the parish.

The final two are from that part of Whisby Nature Park which is within the parish boundary. Both of these are best when the trees are in leaf.

View 9: From the car park, walk beyond the visitor centre, cross the bridge over the Pike Drain, continue towards the railway line and then look for the three opportunities to view Grebe Lake on your right. The first is after a few metres, with a bench to sit on. The second is a few metres further on, where you can stand in an opening. The third (and the best, I think) is from the bird hide a few metres further still.

View 10: From View 9 continue towards the railway line but turn left along the northern edge of Coot Lake. Follow the path to the end of the lake where you will find a bench to rest and enjoy the view. I think this view is even better if you stand to the left of the very large silver birch tree on the edge of the lake.

If you’d like to cover 7 or 8 of these in one day (5 to 6 miles) look for the Loose THREDS entry on the previous page.

100 Views from the Hill

We know there have been 100 issues of View from the Hill but are there also 100 Views from the Hill? I think so, probably 10x that, so I asked as many people as possible to complete the sentence ‘I think Thorpe on the Hill…… .’ Many of the responses came from hand written notes, emails and conversations but I had to make use of Ofsted (I knew I would find it useful one day) and the Village Plan to get the 100 ‘Views’ needed. Here goes!

I think Thorpe on the Hill…...

From Individuals, Couples and Families (78)…….has a good sense of community; is surrounded by beautiful countryside; is full of friendly people; is convenient for the national road network; has a good range of social groups; is rich in wildlife; has outstanding views; has an excellent pub; has the best of both worlds, countryside and near to Lincoln; has a welcoming community spirit; offers great access to the surrounding environment; suffers disproportionately from ‘rat-run’ traffic; offers village life near to sufficient amenities; requires traffic calming measures; has reached its optimum size for retaining its character; is a community of friends; is a wonderful place to come home to; is simply the best (cue for a song?); is terrific, they sent our family to Buckingham Palace; is simply the best, they sent me and my family to the Palace.

…….is simply the best because we have lots of wonderful friends; keeps you smiling; makes you grateful; is used as a short-cut; is a wonderful village, Blacksmith Lane neighbours are the best; needs better broadband; is quieter than London; is really on a bump; includes Whisby Nature Park; is blessed with a great pub; should be preserved as it is; is a friendly place to live; should have a railway station; has a jam roly poly shortage; is not riven by class; is a good place to live; has a great walking group; has a great community spirit, especially the walking group; has become better since starting the walking group; has some lovely people living in it.

…….is full of happy memories; is a precious corner of England; has beautiful sunsets; is plagued by motorbikes; is a lovely place to live because the people are friendly here; was controlled by DWs slipper; is the place I still want to live even after almost 50 years; has a thriving ‘blokes’ pub night on the first Wednesday of the month; has access to fantastic real ale at the Railway; can show intolerance if you play the wrong card in Whist.; is blessed with an excellent restaurant at the Railway; has a website which is constantly improving; allows village life close to City of Lincoln and Market Town of Newark; provides easy access to the major road network; has a strong community spirit; has attractive, diverse housing.

……..has easy access and close proximity to major supermarkets; has a good choice of local businesses; is close to the major rail network; has reasonable housing costs; has reasonable local taxation; has a good village park; has a good village pub; is close to fast food outlets; is close to a petrol station; has a lovely village Church; has a thumping good village newsletter; is a wonderful village; is a friendly village; is an easy village to cross the road-except at 8.30am; is an easy village to cross the road except-at 5pm; is an easy village to drive through-except at 3pm; is an easy village to speed through-especially if you don’t live in it; has a Ron living in it !; all in all has everything going for it; is but a short step out to the open countryside; is worth living in; has character but is potentially under threat from over-development.

From the Village Plan (19)……. is peaceful; is quiet; has a rural character worthy of protection; has an excellent rural environment; has a valued rich wildlife; is a physically attractive village; is better off not being linked to North or South Hykeham; has an independent identity worth preserving; is an active, caring and friendly community; is a low crime area.

From the Ofsted Report and school questionnaires (3) ……. has a school rated as good; has a school in which many parents think that their child is happy; has a school in which many parents think that their child is safe. Tony Magri

The Parish Council supports the Thorpe Village Residents Social Group (THREDS). The aim is to encourage an active

social life in the village, maintaining a welcoming, friendly atmosphere within our community, at a sensible cost and

supporting charities when we can. We hope the association will go from strength to strength and will benefit all village

residents of all ages. We hope everyone will embrace THREDS and help to ensure that our village continues to be a lovely

place to live.

St Michaels Church of England Primary School

Wow! Where did the year go? Another academic year has flown by at St Michaels with the children (and staff) preparing for their 6 weeks holiday. The end of the year is tinged with sadness as Mrs Emery, who has worked as the school administrator for the past 21 years, is retiring. It is a common held belief amongst the whole school community that Mrs Emery will be a huge loss and she leaves us with huge boots to fill. We thank her for all of her tireless work over the years and the school will not be the same without her. In addition to Mrs Emery leaving, our year 6 children will be bidding their farewells as they make their way to secondary school. We wish them well but are full of confidence that they will continue to thrive in the next stage of their education. The final few weeks have been action packed in school. As well as the traditionally held sports day, summer fayre, trip to the beach and leavers assembly; we have had plenty of other excitement. Many of the junior children spent three nights away in Norfolk on a visit, the year 2 and year 3 children slept over at Rand Farm Park for two nights, whilst some of our more intrepid children spent the night sleeping at Whisby. Those who spent the night at Whisby did so under the stars in bivi bags and without tents! Great fun was had by all with a range of animals spotted through the night! As a school we now look forwards to September and what the new academic year brings. A whole new group of children will begin in our reception class and in addition we have many exciting activities already planned in such as building a yurt, construction days and bike ability. The Natural World Centre and Whisby Nature Park

Whisby Nature Park is a great facility to have near the village, full of wildlife, walks and trails. Once barren and lifeless, this amazing place now abounds with wildlife. The park was created by quarrying for sand and gravel, now nature has reclaimed the pits and bare sand, creating habitats for many exciting species.

This year marks our 7th annual Photographic Competition and is a perfect opportunity to take advantage of the sunny weather whilst you walk around the Nature Park capturing the beautiful flora and fauna through the camera lens. The competition is open until Monday 12th September.

Sponsored by Guildhall Studios in association with artsNK there are four categories that will be independently judged with short listed entries being displayed in the Boardwalk Bistro. Visitors will have their chance to vote for their favourite which will become the face of the 2017 Calendar which will be available in the shop. It is FREE to enter and is open to all ages with a limit of four entries per person. All photographs must be taken within the Whisby Nature Reserve.

While on the subject of photography on Wednesday 10th August at 10am and 1.30pm, visitors can learn new photography skills with landscape and nature photographer Brett Gardner! This is aimed at beginners and families, the workshop will take you on a short trail, giving you the opportunity to capture the Whisby environment. Sorry but cameras are not provided. Children must be 10 years+ and be accompanied by an adult at all times. Please dress appropriately for the weather and the nature trail (long trousers/sturdy shoes). Sun cream and hats are recommended. £2 adult/ £1 children. Should be great fun!

Finally there is a new Head Chef at The Natural World Centre as Anna Michie is welcomed to The Boardwalk Bistro. Anna has worked in the industry since leaving school, previously for 7 years at the Le Papillion Bistro in the Bailgate and as Head Chef for over 8 years at the award winning restaurant at Pennells

Lincoln at Cub Centenary Camp – May Bank Holiday

There’s never been a better time to join Scouting as Cubs celebrate their centenary and Beavers their 30

th Birthday during 2016. We’ve already been

on a hundred adventures this year; in just the last couple of months..Scouts have been sailing, kayaking and undertaking an expedition hike and camp, finishing up the term with a trip to the Bomber Command memorial..Cubs have been taking part in many of the Cubs100 events, welcoming visitors to talk about stroke awareness, teach sign language, hiking, kayaking as well as cooking and serving Italian cuisine at the Cub Café..Beavers have been preparing for their summer performance, practicing their photography, kayaking, performing random acts of kindness, learning about disability, finger spelling, and attended district camp.

We Need You We are actively seeking adults to work with the Scout section on Thursday evenings between 7:30 and 9pm when we return in September. If you would like to Scout with us or have a hobby, interest or occupation you would like to come and share with the young people for just one evening, we’d love to hear from you. Please email: [email protected]

27th Lincoln is a busy group, and we regularly bring all sections together for camps, activities and end of year fun nights. We were very proud to light one of the official beacons celebrating the 90th Birthday of our Scout Association patron, Her Majesty the Queen and have been immersed in Principia mission projects with Major Tim Peake - submitting our Rocket Science results as part of the national experiment with the UK and European Space Agencies; turning all our young people into real Space Biologists, worked on Space Diaries authored by Lucy – daughter of Professor Stephen Hawking, designed healthy meals that could be taken into space linked with Heston Blumenthal’s Space Dinner challenge and healthy eating program badges as well as hiking the distance between the International Space Station and Earth in the Space to Earth challenge.

We’re just starting to prepare our annual October group camp with a theme of ‘Don’t Try This At Home’ so the only way to experience our camp escapade and excitement is to join us! We’d love to welcome you, whether as a young member or as an adult helper or leader. Thank you.

This advice was recently published in a national newspaper….. If you’re fed up of being forced to give a phone number when filling in a form online and are then badgered by nuisance calls this may be the answer. Instead of giving your real landline or mobile number, simply en-ter 0333 88 88 88 88. This diverts the caller to call blocking firm Truecall38. The message heard is “Truecall38 is handling my calls, I prefer not to be contacted by phone”. If the website won’t accept the full number drop the last 8.

Lepidoptery 2! What to See & Where.

The cold and wet weather for much of this Spring has meant a poor start to the butterfly and moth season. Even now, our gardens are seeing only a few butterflies, but things are improving slowly. Picking out a few possibilities…... The Common Blue can be seen at Whisby, as can several of the “browns”: Ringlet, Meadow Brown and Gatekeeper. The Holly Blue and Comma are in many of our gardens. (Interestingly, the former breeds on Holly in the Spring, but on Ivy later in the Summer.) Although quite rare nationally, one of our very beautiful butterflies, the White Admiral, can be quite easily seen at Chambers Farm Wood near Bardney. I can arrange a trip there if you are interested. Regarding moths, right now the stunning Swallow-tailed Moth comes readily to a powerful mercury vapour (MV) light, as does the amazingly coloured Elephant Hawk-moth. The name of the latter comes from the caterpillar resembling an Elephant’s trunk! By the way, moths are not harmed by the MV light.

Some ideas: * Let me know if you’d like to join me in setting up the MV lamp one evening. We would start at about 9.30 p.m. and finish at around midnight! * You can keep up with what is “on the wing”, by logging onto our Lincs. Butterfly Conservation website on: http://butterfly-conservation.org/300/lincolnshire-branch.html Click “Sightings” on this so-called “landing page”. Photos often accompany people’s accounts of what they see. * Check out our Twitter account on @BC_Lincolnshire * Let me know if you’d like to go to Chambers Farm Wood. And finally … did you know that many butterflies are territorial? They will aggressively “see off” other butterflies from their “patch”. Apparently, they have even been known to chase birds away! Happy Hunting! Lawrie Poole Tel: 01522-681061

Thorpe on the Hill Old Time Music Hall Cast , November 1985

Thanks again to Paul Smith for this photograph; how many faces can you put names too we wonder? There were two village Music Hall evenings produced around this time, both with great success and a lot of fun. Villagers were transported back in time to the Music Halls of old, welcomed by the Chairman in his best ‘bib and tucker’ in the traditional manner. The Chairman of course was also the magician, now you know who that was…. and his opening joke... “I had a rabbit in its hutch and I bought another rabbit, how many rabbits would I have?” “Why two of course”, was the reply. “No, ten”. “You don’t know your arithmetic”. “You don’t know my rabbits!”
