Background

As the community grows, recognize and maintain the unique relationship between the highly valued natural and residential characteristics of View Royal Design and maintain

parks and recreational spaces to encourage residents of all ages and abilities to enjoy a healthy, active lifestyle

Confirm View Royal as an environmentally responsible community committed to becoming a more sustainable place (including global climate change)

Ensure that services and amenities are provided within the municipality’s financial means and strengthen partnerships with regional service providers to increase local opportunities

With these goals in mind, the aim of the consultation process is to identify priorities relating to each goal

Potential for Community In 2006 the population of View Royal was 8768. By 2026 the Town will have a population of approximately 10,700

More green-space for growing populations?

Spaces for everybody and all interests

Better connectivity and alternative transportation?

Highest proportion of residents are between 35 and 54 years of age

Commuting to work: most residents drive (74%), while 3% cycle and 4% walk (less than provincial and national populations)

WOOF DOGS IN THE PARKMutt Manners: All dogs should be on a leash

when on the street, or when walking in the park in

on leash areas. Dogs need to be under control and on the trail at all times.

Owners should always be prepared to clean up after their dogs. Please bring

bags with you as bags may not always be available. Please take extra caution when in off leash areas to stay in the off leash area

so there is no disturbance to the wildlife and natural environment.

There are eight loops identified on the reverse side of this brochure for youto explore. Here are the distances foreach loop shown:

Walking Loops

View Royal has a variety of great areas for kids to enjoy. Take them for a walk and play at the beach at View Royal Park, or enjoy the great playgrounds at Chilco, Newstead, or the new one at Portage Park. If its playing fields you’re after, check out Centennial Park. It has three fastball fields, tennis court, basketball court, hockey area and a playground.

Neighbourhood Parks• Amenities include greenspace, paths and picnic areas

• Several have playgrounds and programmed open space

• Mainly used by local residents

Community Parks• Generally 2+ hectares• Used by residents and visitors• Used for sports events, walking and passive recreation

Neighbourhood Greenspace• Located in residential areas• Within walking distance from home

• Usually provide a children’s playground or seating area

Natural Greenspace• Key element: protection of natural systems and areas

• May contain unique features• Use is generally limited to pedestrian trails

Shoreline Access• Provide waterfront access• Some are developed with stairs and other features

• Many are undeveloped

Linear Parks (Trails)• Add to the larger regional active transportation network

• Both multi-use trails & pedestrian only trails

• Access to natural areas & parks

Other JurisdictionsThese areas not owned by the Town of View Royal and not subject to the Parks Master Plan. They are included to provide a full picture of park amenities.
