PUSEY HOUSESunday after the Ascension

17th May 201511.00 a.m. High Mass

Music of the Mass: Mass for Four Voices, Byrd

Entrance Hymn: 109 Hail thee, Festival DayGloria: page 1223 in the New English Hymnal

First Lesson: 2 Kings 2 v. 9-15

And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that Elijah said unto Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee. And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me. And he said, Thou hast asked a hard thing: nevertheless, if thou see me when I am taken from thee, it shall be so unto thee; but if not, it shall not be so. And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.

And Elisha saw it, and he cried, My father, my father, the chariot of Israel, and the horsemen thereof. And he saw him no more: and he took hold of his own clothes, and rent them in two pieces. He took up also the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and went back, and stood by the bank of Jordan; and he took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and smote the waters, and said, Where is the Lord God of Elijah? and when he also had smitten the waters, they parted hither and thither: and Elisha went over. And when the sons of the prophets which were to view at Jericho saw him, they said, The spirit of Elijah doth rest on Elisha. And they came to meet him, and bowed themselves to the ground before him.

Remain seated to sing: Ps. 68:32-endExurgat Deus

CAN Sing unto God, O ye kingdoms of_the earth: O sing praises untö the Lord;

FULL Who sitteth in the heavens over all from the beginning : lo, he doth send out his voice, yea, and that a mighty vöice.

CAN Ascribe ye the power to God over Israel : his worship and strength is in the clouds.

FULL O God, wonderful art thou in thy holy places : even the God of Israel, he will give strength and power unto his people;* blessed be God.

Second Lesson: 1 Peter 4 v. 7-11

But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer. And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins. Use hospitality one to another without grudging. As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

Gospel acclamation:

I will not leave you comfortless:I go away and come unto you and your heart shall rejoice.

THE GOSPEL: John 15 v. 26- 16 v. 4

But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me: and ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning.

These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be offended. They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service. And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me. But these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, ye may remember that I told you of them. And these things I said not unto you at the beginning, because I was with you.

A message from the Principal: Next Sunday, the day of Pentecost, when we celebrate the descent of the Holy Spirit on the disciples of our Lord, the Bishop of Ebbsfleet with confirm five members of the Pusey community during Mass. The rite of confirmation has two elements. The bishop lays hands on the baptised person and prays that he or she may be strengthened with the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit. Before that happens, candidates recite the vows which are made at baptism.

Signs and Wonderings. “In Sweden the law was changed 1998, making it a crime to buy sex but not to sell it. When the law was drawn up the Swedish government said it wanted to send a clear message about its views on prostitution- which it described as unacceptable in a gender equal society.” What does it mean to take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Is sex a unique moral category demanding unique laws? Our weekly informal theological discussion group. Come to Merton’s Howard Stringer Room on Friday at 5.30 p.m. for lively discussion, tea and cake.
