Background/Project: Children’s Development is one of the major programs at VIN’s Integrated

Community Development Approach. The Goal of the Children’s development program is to protect the

rights of all children by providing them access to basic quality education, developing their life skills

(creativity, leadership etc.) & providing access to health & hygiene services. VIN has different projects

under children’s development program such as Children’s Clubs (CC), Early Childhood Development

(ECD), School Attendance (Teacher Development, Parenting Education, School Infrastructure

Development, and Child Sponsorship) and Child Care.

Even in the recent days in Nepal, schools are focusing on examination and are not doing enough for

developing life skills like creativity, leadership for children. Teachers only focus on reading and writing –

rote learning. Creativity and individual difference in children are not explored. Due to the busy work

schedule of parents, most of the children do not have an opportunity to be socialized and creative. To

provide opportunity to children (aged 6-12 years old) for life skills development, such type of camps are

very essential. We work only for disadvantaged communities. These families cannot afford to take their

children to holidays during their Winter & Summer breaks. Children don’t have proper structure and

environment at home and school to develop their innate talents. Children's camp (at winter and summer

breaks) is one of the best places to explore their innate talents creativity and leadership. In this workcamp,

national & international volunteers will facilitate different types of fun and creative activities for the

children where VIN works.

Objectives:

To provide unique opportunity for overall development (social, emotional, physical, mental, creativity) & provide fun-time for children aged 6-12 utilizing their vacation period.

To promote the friendship, understanding and solidarity among local young volunteers and cross-national volunteers.

To provide opportunity to understand and appreciate the Nepalese culture and tradition or cultural immersion.Work / Activities: The volunteers will conduct children's camp to promote their innate talents &

creativity for their overall development such as physical, mental, social & emotional. During the






children’s camp volunteers will prepare sessions and take classes on following topics: Physical exercises,

team building, drawing, colouring & painting, art, craft & origami, singing and dancing, drama, music,

and hiking, teaching language and so on.

Placement Support Process: Each volunteer is greeted and received by VIN local staff at the airport and

dropped to a local host family. The first day is the arrival day. The second day volunteers will receive a

full day orientation at VIN office in Kathmandu. The placement orientation will cover cultural tips,

survival phrases on Nepali language, health tips, preparation for project activities and an introduction to

VIN. Then actual workcamp starts from the third day. You will always be guided by a Nepali camp

leader and VIN supervisors will visit you time to time for follow up support. Should you have any

concerns on the workcamp, you may always call us for immediate help. During or after the workcamp,

our staff will take you on a half day sight-seeing tour to cultural heritage sites. On the last day of the

workcamp, you will submit a detailed work report, fill up an exit form and sit with VIN executives for

exit interview and feedback session.

Location: Tarakeshwor : Tarakeshwor municipality is situated outskirt of Kathmandu District. It is

around 10-15 km from main ring road to Balaju, Kathmandu covered with hills, fields and woods.

Accommodation: The volunteers will stay with the host family/hostel identified by VIN. The living

facilities are simple and basic. Male and female volunteers will share the same living area with separate

rooms. The volunteers sleep on simple beds / mattress. Please bring your sleeping bag.

Language: Basic English should be spoken among the participants

Participation Fee: The participation fee 230 Euros (+20 Euro for transportation) is to be paid on your

arrivals at VIN Office or upon booking the placement by PayPal or bank transfer before the placement.

The Participation Fee Covers:

Food and Accommodation: Nepali Standard at a local host family – 3 meals a day

Transportation: Airport pick up and pick up and drop to the working community site

A half day guided sight-seeing for the world heritage site of Kathmandu

Materials for the work-camp, community development projects support

Meeting point: VIN staff will pick each volunteer from the airport. The volunteers are requested to send

If you want to come earlier and explore the country more, you may find pre-paid taxi at the airport or VIN

may help you on that. You also can come to VIN office, Balaju on the first day at the latest 12.00 midday.

Leisure Activities: VIN takes you a half day cultural sightseeing. Either before, during or after your

workcamp. VIN also organize weekends travel tours like Chitwan Jungle Safari, Pokhara, Nagorkot on

extra costs if you are interested.

Fun with Children project aims to provide opportunity to the local community children learn through fun

activities.

Workcamps will be organized with the cooperation of local community schools, community working

together with local teachers/children/ villagers. The workcamp will also involve teaching children from

poor and marginalized communities in the formal and non-formal setting. The volunteers will teach basic

English and mathematics, health, sanitation and hygiene, and environmental protection through creative

learning methods like art, music, games etc. As part of the cultural exchange, volunteers will witness and

participate in - cultural activities in local communities.

We are looking for passionate entheusiastic volunteers who are at least 18 years old with a good

Working with Deaf Children project aims to support and help deaf children through educational and other

activities. VIN works in partnership with Shree Navajyoti Deaf Basic School which lies at Kamalamai

Municipality-6 at Jasedamar village in Sindhuli District. It was established in 2062 B.S. It is 1.8 km east

from Sindhuli Madi Bazar. Sindhuli Madi Bazar is around 121 km south-east from the capital,

Kathmandu. This school is one and only deaf special school in whole Janakpur zone, where students from

8 neighbouring districts(Dhanusha, Sarlahi, Mahottari, Siraha, Ramechhap, Okhaldhunga, Khotang and

Udaypur) studies. We have total 88 students, classes running from pre-primary to Grade 8. It also has

computer classes running from grade 6 to 8.

A sustainable future for the planet can only be achieved if both animals and people are part of the eco-

system It is a forgotten fact that even they need food and water. Conservation and management of animals

have a significant bearing on the survival of every species by helping in promotion of rational use of

environment to provide a high quality of living for mankind.

VIN works in partnership with different organizations for the welfare of the animals. Community Dog

Welfare (CDW) Kopan is one of our partners, is committed to community awareness and responsibility

for dog welfare in Kopan, Kathmandu. CDW is managed and run by Kate and Doug Clendon, a New

Zealand couple who have been living in Nepal for over 25 years.

We welcome volunteers to help with the care of the dogs. The dogs are always delighted with company

and while they do get out daily for short walks, they enjoy extra outings. Sometimes bathing is required

or treatment and bandage of wounds. Extra brushing is also welcome.

The volunteers will work with local staffs who come for four hours morning and afternoon. In the

morning they clean out the kennels, take the dogs for walks in groups and feed them their breakfast. In

the afternoon, they take them all for walks again and cook for and feed dogs.

Objectives:






To support the centre to protect injured and helpless dogs and find suitable families for them.

To raise awareness on conservation of animals among the community people.

Works/ activities

Rescue & Recovery: Taking sick and injured dogs from the street into the shelter for medical treatment

and care, volunteers can work with Doctors of Veterinary Clinic (they visit only when needed), who

provide professional service with compassion and sensitivity. Nutrition is a key factor in recovery and

restoration of low immune systems - the dogs receive a balanced diet of freshly prepared food. You will

walk with the dogs outside in the morning and evening, are free in the compound during the day, and

secured in the kennels at night. They are vaccinated and spayed/neutered when they regain health.

Community Work: At Kopan area many dogs are free-roaming, whether individually owned, or street

dogs. A holistic approach, based on the participation of the local people, aims to change attitudes and

improve the welfare of all dogs in the community. Raising awareness among community people is one

possible work for volunteers.

Hospice Care: Many dogs come into the shelter in a critical condition. The centre try to improve their

quality of life by providing ongoing care for the chronically ill, injured, disabled, abandoned, neglected

and aged to save them from suffering and dying on the street. They can live comfortably in a safe place

receiving medical treatment and care. Every dog is given a chance for an improved life and a peaceful

place to die.

Background/Project:Many parts of the communities are destroyed to dust and many families lost their houses and properties in

2015 earthquake. This massive earthquake not only left people poor but many people are now homeless

and living in very cold and small temporary shelters. This tragic moment made VIN realize that

reconstruction of houses of poor families, public properties, religious temples, and cultural heritage sites

would be one of the best ideas to support the community people.

After the devastating earthquake of 25th April, 2015, the situation in Nepal is desperate! VIN has been

continuously involved in the Relief work dividing its relief into three phases; Rapid response / Rescue,

Rehabilitation, Reconstruction & Sustainability.

VIN already completed two phases and we are now in Reconstruction & Sustainability phase. This is our

long term phase. We will be working until the reconstruction completes in our earthquake affected

communities. This includes education to families on WASH and construct toilets to them, demolish the

damage houses, Rebuilding Earthquake Resistant Infrastructure (RERI), Earthquake Resistant Home

Construction Education (REECH) and Entrepreneurship Building.

Objectives:

To support the rebuilding of Earthquake resistance homes for the most needy earthquake families of Tarakeshwor Municipality and Okharpawa.

To demolish the damage structure, clear debris and manage it.

To raise awareness on disaster preparedness among the community people.

Work / Activities:

Support earthquake victims to rebuild earthquake resistance homes. Demolish the damaged structure, clear debris and manage it.






Educate on safe earthquake resistance houses/schools. Conduct awareness campaign on disaster preparedness.

Background/Project: Nepal is a beautiful mountainous country. More than 80 % of the population live

in rural areas with over 35% of the population living below the poverty line. Access to proper health,

hygiene and sanitation facilities is often very limited and awareness of correct hygiene practices is low.

Only 46% of the population has access to toilets, leaving 54% to practice open-air defecation.

Due to lack of awareness, the community site has to deal with various health problems. Recognising these

concerns, VIN organises camps to address health issues. It focuses on Workcamps/ short-term projects

which include working along with local partners to spread health and hygiene awareness among the

community people. The work will vary largely on every camps and will include some simple physical

work.






The implementation of the Total Sanitation Project is expected to generate a significant improvement

in the health and sanitation conditions of the community and protect the environment as a reduction in the

occurrence of sickness within the community and an improved quality of life.

Our aim through this project is to do hands on activities supporting people in health and hygiene, create

awareness among the people and to give them more instruments to feel confident and feel free to decide

for their future, and for the future of a new generation. VIN cooperates with several local partners in

assisting various government schools by creating awareness about the health and hygiene; cleaning or

constructing toilets, etc.

Objectives:

To involve the community people and sensitize community people about Health Hygiene and Sanitation

issues.

To construct / reconstruct sanitation facilities

Work:

Construct toilets for the needy families.

Raise awareness on health, hygiene and sanitation.

Conduct research on sanitation.

Background/Project: Okhaldhunga, District of the Himalayas - This small paradise on the earth is in the

Everest Region. It is located in Sagarmatha zone in the North-East part of Nepal. Okhaldhunga is one of

the most beautiful places in Nepal. If Okhaldhunga is viewed with sacred vision, it has numerous sights

which are fascinating. VIN’s

Project site (Taluwa, Bhadaure

and Thulachhap VDCs) is on

the South-East part from the

district headquarter,

Okhaldhunga. From

Kathmandu, bus route is about

250 km which is a rough trip

that takes one day (9-12 hrs). In

Okhaldhunga, VIN implements integrated approach to community development.

Because of the geographical situation, it has limited developmental activities and facilities. Unlike

Kathmandu, Okhaldhunga has numbers of illiterate people. Okhaldhunga lacks proper education

facilities. Due to Lack of education facilities, young people move from Okhaldhunga to other cities like

Kathmandu or fly abroad to secure proper education. There are schools but they don’t impart quality. Not

many people complete high school due to poverty, not having good schools, resources and geographical

remoteness.

According to VIN’s baseline survey, there are only 91.56% children who have been attending school

regularly, but 1.44% children are not regular in school. Similarly, 10.42% students dropout of the school.

There are 2.99% families which are well aware about child rights and 20.69% families know a fair

amount about child rights. But, 76.30% families do not know anything about child rights. Most children

who drop out are involved in household work, field/farm work, households ploughing, labour in

agriculture, collect grass/firewood, graze to cattle etc.

Workcamps will be organized with the cooperation of local community schools, and community

infrastructure like school building, education material, playground and drinking water. Volunteers can

make a big difference in the daily lives of these children by providing necessities listed above and

educating children through fun and creative ways.

The workcamp will also involve teaching children from poor and marginalized community in the formal

and non-formal schools about Basic English and Mathematics, Health and Hygiene, and Environmental

protection through creative learning methods like art, music, games etc. There will also be house visits

and meetings with local people as part of inter-cultural learning and to give awareness on health and

hygiene. In addition, volunteers also will get a chance to take part in simple renovation work at local

schools and engage in activities like painting, tree plantation, protecting from landslides etc. As part of

the cultural exchange, volunteers will witness and participate in the available cultural programs with local

community.

Objectives: To create child friendly learning environment to the children of Okhaldhunga by developing

resources and educational activities;

To provide children from the disadvantaged communities a unique opportunity of overall development

(social, emotional, physical, mental, creativity) & provide fun-time for children aged 6-12.

To promote the friendship, understanding and solidarity among local young national and international

volunteers.

To make classroom child friendly by painting and colouring the classrooms. Teach different skills to the

children.

a full day orientation at VIN office in Kathmandu. The placement orientation will cover, cultural tips,

survival phrases on Nepali language, health tips, and project activities preparation and about VIN. Then

you will travel to Okhaldhunga, project site which takes minimum 8 hrs drive. You will be always

guided by a Nepali camp leader/VIN staff and VIN supervisors will visit you time to time for follow up

support. Should you have any concerns on the workcamp, you may always call us for immediate help.

Before or after the workcamp, we will take you a half day sight-seeing to cultural heritage sites. On the

last day of the workcamp, you will submit a detailed work report, fill up an exit form and sit with VIN

executives for exit interview and feedback session.






Accommodation/food: The volunteers will stay in Kathmandu for two nights until orientation. VIN

covers two nights’ accommodation in twin sharing basis and provides lunch in its office on the orientation

days. They have to cover breakfast and dinner themselves. Then they will be with the host family/hostel

identified by VIN in Okhaldhhunga. The living facilities are simple and basic. Male and female

Volunteers will share the same living area with separate rooms. There will be 2-4 persons in one room.

Volunteers are required to sleep on the simple beds. Please bring your sleeping bag. When they are in the

city the last day, they are required to cover food and accommodation themselves.

Language: Basic English should be spoken among participants

Participation Fee: The participation fee 240 Euros +60 Euro for Transportation is to be paid on your

arrivals at VIN Office or upon booking the placement by PayPal or bank transfer.

Project Background: Nepal is an agricultural country. About 80% of the people’s occupation is agriculture. Trade is also mainly of agricultural products. Agriculture provides raw materials for the industries. With the help of good manure, seeds, equipment and irrigation the growth of crops is increased in large quantity. Agriculture is known as the backbone of economy of Nepal. Agriculture occupation consists of three types: food crops, cash crops and mixed crops. Beside this, there are Livestock, Horticulture and Fishery.

VIN’s Multi-Purpose Eco-Farm (MPEF) concept is based on low-external inputs and sustainable farming practices, which allow farmers to integrate different technical elements into the MPEF system. It will support to produce crops for both, home consumption and income generation. Adopting diversified agricultural activities, mono-cropping (rice or maize or wheat or millet) fields converts into integrated farms, which included fish ponds, fruit trees, cash crops, vegetable gardens and domestic animal husbandry.

It is a five-year plan in Taluwa community, and is in partnership with local youths, which we aim to develop as a teaching farm for villagers. Modern technologies will be used and it will be developed and become a complete Multi –purpose farm in five years. Organic & permaculture techniques will be

adapted and specific farm layouts, species composition, cropping patterns and cultivation techniques will be introduced and monitored following the technical advice of agricultural experts.

In Nepal agriculture is the main source of income of the people. However farmers are unaware about modern technology and multiple farms. Many local youth are migrating to other countries for labour. There is a big force of unemployed youth in the country. The main aim of the multiple farming is to provide opportunity to youth to get involved into the project. It will enhance the entrepreneurship skills among youth and women on agriculture.

To train local people in the field of agricultural management, entomology, disease control, organic eco farming, marketing, farming techniques, irrigation and plant nutrition etc.

Create mass awareness about the hazards of chemical pesticides so as to aware other farmers in the community into organic production.

Local women's/farmer’s group in food crops, cash crops, mixed crops, livestock, horticulture and fishery etc.

Train/work with the local communities on Vermi composting and composting; Low cost irrigation; Fodder cultivation and management; Organic farming etc.

Background/Project: Children’s Development is one of the major programs in VIN’s Integrated

Community Development Approach. The Goal of the Children’s development program is to protect the

rights of all children by providing them access to basic quality education, developing their life skills &

providing access to health services through community health program. VIN has different projects under

the children’s development programme such as Children’s Clubs (CC), Early Childhood Development

(ECD), School Attendance Project (Teacher Development, Parenting Education, School Infrastructure

Development, Child Sponsorship) and Child Care at Orphanage.

Even in the recent days in Nepal, schools are

focusing on examination and are doing less for

developing the creativity of the students. The

teachers only focus on reading and writing – rote

learning. The creativity of children is not explored.







Due to the busy work schedule of parents, most of the children do not have the opportunity to be

socialized and creative. To provide opportunity to children (aged 6-12 years old) for socialization &

creativity, such type of camps is very essential.

At VIN working area Okhaldhunga, children don’t have the proper structure and environment at home

and school to develop their innate talents. Children's camp (at winter and summer breaks) is one of the

best places to explore their innate talents and creativity. In this workcamp, national & international

volunteers will facilitate different types of fun and creative activities for the target children where VIN

works.

Objectives:

To provide unique opportunity for overall development (social, emotional, physical, mental, creativity)& provide fun-time for children aged 6-12 utilizing their vacation period.

To promote the friendship, understanding and solidarity among local young volunteers and cross-national volunteers.

To provide opportunity to understand and appreciate the Nepalese culture and tradition or cultural immersion.Work / Activities: The volunteers will conduct children's camp to promote their innate talents &

creativity for their overall development such as physical, mental, social & emotional. During children

camp volunteers can prepare sessions and take classes on following topics: Physical exercises, Team

Building, Drawing, coloring & painting, Art, Craft & Origami, Singing and dancing, Drama, Music, and

Hiking, Teaching language and so on.

A library is a collection of sources of information and similar resources, made accessible to a defined

community/school for reference or borrowing. It provides physical or digital access to material, and may

be a physical building or room, or a virtual space, or both. Learners are at the centre of learning in the

library. In Nepal, there are not enough training organized for teachers and children on how to use library.

So through this camp, volunteers will organize teaching / learning activating through the use of library

resources. It’s very fun and creative way of learning.

Workcamps will be organized with the cooperation of local community schools under VIN’s children’s

development program, education and working together with local teachers/children/ villagers.

The schools where we are conducting camps lacks facilities of library and other infrastructure. Some

schools have some collections but they are not managed and used well. The rooms are not well painted







and books are not arranged in the proper order. Children are not taught the skills of using library and its

importance.

You not only manage the library but also organize a lot of activities with children at school. You will also

conduct some classes of how library is managed and used. The library camp will help children developing

reading and writing skills. Volunteers with the abilities on any sports, arts & crafts, music, dance, drama,

in & outdoor group games are welcome.

Through this project we want to give every student an opportunity to learn, to enjoy reading, and to create

new knowledge and understanding by the use of library.

Objectives: To work for Children development project and exchange the experience, help school manage

the library and teach children to use it in regular basis.

Work:

Clean and maintain the library.

Arrangement of resources in the library and record them in proper order.

Paint and decorate the library room.

Conduct the session with children and teachers for the proper use of library.

Background/Project:

The protection of environment has been major challenge now. The solid waste management should be

urgent action to protect environment. Solid waste is a by-product of human activities which tends to

increase with rapid urbanization, improved living

standard and changing consumption patterns.

Management of increasing amount of solid waste

has become a major challenge in many

communities in Nepal. If solid waste is properly

used it can be a valuable resource, but if it is not

effectively managed, it can result in serious

adverse impact on environment and public

health.

The problems associated with the disposal of

waste in public places in VIN’s working communities including schools are numerous and they include

littering of food remains and other waste materials.

There is potential health risks associated with the poor management of solid waste .Children are particularly susceptible to respiratory problems caused by dust from dumping sites and also to diarrhoea ,skin disease and eye infection and other diseases.

Non-biodegradable waste (NBW) is common in communities that are urbanised or within the vicinity of

an urbanised environment. Nepal has a huge challenge of NBW visible to the naked-eye. This NBW

phenomenon is a much larger issue in rural communities such as Kavresthali and Okharpauwa

community located beyond the outskirts of Kathmandu. Preventing the build-up of NBW in communities

becomes top priority as diseases derived from NBW increases the prevalence of disease related to

sanitation and consumable products. Furthermore, NBW causes degradation to the land. The majority of

farmers use to grow local products to feed their households and farm-stock. This project is designed for

change- making in the community with “Better Environment – Better Tomorrow”.

Objectives:

Prevent and control water, land and air pollution through environment education and other activities.

Identify environmental problems and associated factors about climate changes and update projects to

protect them.

Background/Project: Nepal is blessed with a rich cultural heritage. Culture has been called 'the way of

life for an entire society'. The statement holds particularly true in the case of Nepal where every aspect of

life, food, clothing and even occupations are culturally classified. In a society so feudalistic and so

fractured across class lines, cultural heritage comes as a fresh wind. The culture of Nepal includes the

codes of manners, dress, language, rituals, norms of behaviour and systems of belief. The culture of

Nepal is a unique combination of tradition and change. The traditions are followed as they were and new

customs are created to keep pace with the changing times. The land is rich with diverse cultural groups

like Tharu, Yadav, Ahir, Newars and others.






VIN is conducting this project which is the common action of CCIVS. The project will be organized in

coordination with local authority of Vajrayogani and UNESCO. The project will be carried out in

Vajrayogini and early settlement of sankhu.

A typical Newar settlement of Kathmandu valley, Vajrayogani, Sankhu is located around 30 km away

from Kathmandu city. The devastating earthquake of 25th April and 12th May 2015 has caused huge

damage in the settlement and caused unrecoverable loss of people and heritage. Sankhu/Vajrayogani has

been inscribed in the tentative list of UNESCO world heritage sites, both for the richness of its traditional

Newar and Rana style houses and its urban planning which is organized along two main axes, the way to

the Vajrayogini temple area and the ancestral trade route to Tibet. These two parallel streets define a

North-South oriented network of successive squares and most of the public, religious and commercial

activities are concentrated here. The Vajrayogini hillock and Sali Nadi river banks are the other heritage

significant areas of the city.

In addition, a network of water canals connected to a series of ponds and hitis distributed along the two

main axes testify to the urban engineering knowledge of Newar civilization. It must also be considered as

major constituent elements to the heritage significance of Sankhu. As previously mentioned, the heritage

value of Sankhu mainly lies in its collection of traditional houses.

Due to severe destruction, many inhabitants were forced to leave the core city to find shelter in safe

places. Thus, many temporary structures have been constructed on the fringe of the settlement. There is a

huge threat that these areas may become their permanent residence. This has also created problem of

waste management in the area. This is urgent to carry out those kinds of activities as there is garbage

thrown everywhere. The site is waiting for renovation. It is important to raise the awareness to the local

community about its importance and protection.

Objectives: This project aims to conserve, promote and protect Vajrayogini and Sankhu area which is

badly affected from the 2015 earthquake.

The specific objectives are: To educate and raise the awareness among the people about the importance

of Sankhu and temple area. To clean the area and educate people not to throw the garbage everywhere.

To help for renovation and reconstruction in the area.
