BOISE STATE

You can feel it in the air. It’s unmistakable.

All across campus, from the south banks of the

Boise River to the farthest deep blue reaches of

Bronco Stadium, something truly remarkable

is happening here. At Boise State, you get the

sense that anything is possible. That you can

go far. That everything you need to succeed is

right before your eyes.

Maybe it’s our unbeatable location in the

heart of the capital— the hub of government,

business, the arts, health care, industry and

technology—and our strong connections to

hundreds of companies and organizations in

the region. Maybe it’s because we’re Idaho’s

metropolitan research university, or that our

campus glows with spirit and excitement.

Maybe it’s our breathtaking surroundings

in the great outdoors—just minutes from

snowboarding, mountain biking, camping

and hiking. For all these reasons and more,

you just can’t help feeling that Boise State

is the university of opportunity.

As a student, you’ll quickly discover that

creating opportunities for you is our top

priority. The more the better, we think.

Why? Opportunity guarantees your success.

Opportunity—whether it’s in the classroom,

in the lab, or on the playing field—prepares

you with all the knowledge, skills and

confidence you need to excel in the world

of tomorrow. Opportunity provides you

with a university experience like no other.

Opportunity in all directions. Opportunity

in all the right places.

That’s Boise State.

CAMPUS LIFE

LIVING-LEARNING

Living-Learning Communities (LLC) at Boise

State create natural connections between the

classroom and daily life. It’s the best of both

worlds – you can enjoy all the usual advantages

of living on campus in a residence hall, with the

added benefit of living among other students

like you who share the same academic goals and

interests. Having a ready-made support group

makes all those college “firsts” a little less stress-

ful, like the first meal in Boise River Cafe, or

the first day of classes. Some LLCs have faculty

in residence -- how many college students can

say they are neighbors with their professor?

Living Learning Communities at Boise State:

• Arts & Humanities

• College of Business & Economics

Your success as a student centers on the

academic choices you make, and Boise State has

created a campus environment to support every

aspect of your college experience, both in and

out of the classroom. The bustling 175-acre cam-

pus encompasses more than 170 buildings and

residence halls serving over 20,000 students and

faculty. Being located in the heart of Idaho’s

capital city means you’re never more than a

short walk or a quick bike ride to museums,

cafes, movie theaters, stores and clubs.

HOUSING

When you live on campus in residence halls,

you’re in the center of campus life, seconds

from classrooms and computer labs, minutes

from the Boise River and downtown and a

short distance from the great outdoors. Your

campus home is more than just a room – it’s

a convenient place to study, socialize and just

BE. Apartments and new townhouse units for

juniors and seniors provide the convenience

of campus proximity with added flexibility.

For more information on traditional residence

halls, living-learning communities and on-cam-

pus apartments, visit our housing site online.

Getting involved on campus is as important as

going to class. Whatever you’re into, you won’t

have to look hard on campus to find it. Energy,

excitement and momentum. Go ahead. Get

caught up in it. This is Boise State.

Our award-winning, 105,000 square-foot

Student Recreation Center features basketball

courts, exercise and weight rooms, racquetball

courts, a multipurpose gym, an indoor run-

ning track, activity rooms, a 17,000 square-foot

aquatics center and one of the largest collegiate

climbing walls in the United States.

In the mood for a slice of pizza or game of

foosball? The Student Union Building (SUB)

unites an eclectic mix of amenities under one

roof, including several eateries, a radio station,

art gallery, bookstore, post office, billiards,

ping-pong, bowling alley, cultural center—even

a video and pinball arcade.

Looking for ways to show off your Boise State

pride—or make new friends? Take in a big game—

or join a club. Help book bands or comedy

acts. Sneak preview films in the Student Union

or run for office with the student government.

Volunteer for a community service project like

“Rake Up Boise” or march to the capital during

the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Human Rights

Celebration. Boise State University cherishes

and celebrates diversity as a core value shared

by faculty, staff, students and the community.

Every year, Boise State hosts over 488 interna-

tional students from over 63 countries, offering

you the chance to meet, learn from and make

friends with people from around the world.

SORORITY & FRATERNITY LIFE

Being involved in a sorority or fraternity means

being part of a community devoted to helping

others in need. You have the ability to posi-

tively change our world, whether serving with an

agency in Boise, or building a school in Jamaica.

Joining a fraternity or sorority is an excellent way

to solidify your academic career while developing

yourself as a leader, serving others and building

positive relationships at Boise State University.

CLUBS andORGANIZATIONS

Getting involved in a student organization is

a great way to get the most out of your college

experience. Student organizations give you

opportunities for making friends and having

fun; for doing something you love and trying

something new; for developing work, life, and

leadership skills; and for making your mark and

leaving a legacy.

Students involved in organizations at Boise

State have built the world’s fastest vegetable oil-

powered vehicle. They’ve written and directed

campus theater productions, organized concerts,

lectures, and dance marathons, and planned

community service and volunteer opportunities.

Boise State’s ethnic organizations are among

the most active on campus, promoting cultural

understanding and appreciation through events

such as the Mosaic Campus Visitation Program,

Cinco de Mayo Fiesta, Human Rights Week, and

the International Food, Song, and Dance Festival.

ACADEMICSOUTSTANDING FACULTY

The best teachers are those who are engaged,

passionate about what they do and take a

personal interest in your success. At Boise

State, you’ll work with accomplished profes-

sors who are eager to collaborate and share

their knowledge with you.

Many of our professors are internationally

recognized scholars, authors or lecturers.

Others consult for governments and corpora-

tions worldwide or spearhead ground-breaking

research. Equally as dedicated to their students

as they are to their work in the community,

our professors keep regular office hours so that

you can ask questions, seek advice or simply

get to know them on a more personal level.

And although Boise State is regarded as a

major metropolitan research university, you’ll

find that full-time professors, not graduate

assistants, teach most of your classes—even

introductory courses.

FINISH IN FOUR

You can learn a great deal about a university

and the value of its education simply by taking

a close look at the success of its students. At

Boise State University, our number one prior-

ity is our students’ success, and we’ll do what

it takes to help you achieve your goals. For in-

stance, Finish in Four guarantees that you can

complete a degree in four years if you follow

a planned course of study. If not, Boise State

will pay for the additional required courses.

RESEARCH

At Boise State, research isn’t something you

learn, it’s something you do—side-by-side with

your professors. It’s not like that everywhere.

At most universities, only graduate students

can participate in research. Our commitment

to providing direct, hands-on learning for all

our students results in unmatched research

exposure and opportunity.

You’ll work alongside faculty in a wide range

of research projects, such as monitoring ground-

water flow, studying brain functions or conduct-

ing community surveys. You’ll co-write papers

with faculty mentors. You’ll present your own

findings at Boise State’s annual Undergradu-

ate Research and Scholarship Conference or

at professional meetings around the country.

Besides providing you with opportunities to

work with nationally recognized scholars, your

research experience can also help open the door

to graduate school or an exciting career.

GREG HAMPIKIAN

HOMETOWN: Boise, ID

PROFESSOR OF: Biology

Boise State professor and forensic DNA

expert Greg Hampikian has helped ex-

onerate eight wrongly convicted people

around the nation; in four of those cases

new DNA evidence identified the actual

perpetrators. In 2011 he played a role in

the release of American college student

Amanda Knox from an Italian prison

after her murder conviction was over-

turned. The case received international

media attention, and Hampikian was

interviewed on CNN, Nightline, Good

Morning America and other media out-

lets about the role DNA evidence played

in the Knox case and why his analysis

showed it was suspect.

EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY: Leave

them hungry for more—both in education and

entertainment.

IN MY FREE TIME: I enjoy sitting on my

front porch, playing original songs on my

guitar – badly – and telling science stories to

the neighborhood kids.

MY FAMILY: My oldest son Daniel, 27,

will earn a PhD in Philosophy soon, making

him the 3rd Dr. Hampikian in my family.

Laura, 20, was a Miss Idaho 2011 runner-

up, and Ben, 15 is a filmmaker.

If you love to solve a science or math challenge

just to get to the “aha” moment, then you’re

already hard-wired for STEM. Science, technol-

ogy, engineering and mathematics (STEM) will

fuel the technical innovations that our economy

needs in the future. Your scientific curiosity

and critical thinking skills will connect you to

a STEM community working to address inter-

national issues of energy, environment, technol-

ogy, and human health.

Boise State’s commitment to developing the

next generation of innovators and educators

comes through loud and clear in the programs

and services available to STEM students, from

research to service-learning, plus a wide range

of STEM clubs, competitions, and community

projects. Specific scholarships are available for

STEM students, as well as study labs and ad-

ditional academic services.

If you’re driven by problem-solving, discovery,

exploratory learning, and like to actively engage

in a situation in order to find its solution,

STEM provides excellent opportunity.

BOISE, IDCAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Boise is one of the fastest-growing high-tech

cities in the nation and home to several cor-

porate headquarters, state and federal offices,

medical centers and media outlets. The city has

garnered national recognition from U.S. News

and World Report, Forbes and Inc. for being a

great place to live and work and study, as well

as being dubbed one of the hottest cities for

entrepreneurs. With stats like these, it’s easy to

see why nearly 47,000 alumni have chosen to

live in Boise after graduating from Boise State.

LOCATION

The capital of Idaho, Boise (that’s “Boy-Cee”)

rises spectacularly from a lush, green valley

surrounded by mountainous high desert.

Home to more than 635,000 people, the Boise

region is the largest urban area between Port-

land and Salt Lake City. Its nickname is Trea-

sure Valley—for its “treasure chest of resources

and opportunities.” Nationally recognized

for its safety, quality of life and beautiful

sunny climate, Boise is many things to many

people. It’s a big city, but offers small town

warmth. It’s fast paced, but also laid back. It’s

sophisticated, but friendly too. According to

Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine, Boise

has all the ingredients for future success—one

of the ten great places in America that “will

only get better.” A young city with a median

resident age of just 33 years, Boise also main-

tains a healthy creative class: professionals

who work as scientists, engineers, architects,

educators, writers, artists or entertainers and

serve as the catalysts necessary for

a thriving metropolis.

CULTURE & DIVERSITY

Boise’s lively cultural and entertainment scene

is just a 10-minute walk from campus. In the

vibrant downtown area you’ll find coffeehous-

es, restaurants, movie theaters, dance clubs

and shops that cater to the college crowd.

You’ll discover no fewer than 15 museums,

including the Boise Art Museum, Idaho Black

History Museum, Basque Museum & Cultural

Center, Anne Frank Human Rights Memo-

rial, World Center for Birds of Prey and Zoo

Boise. The Boise community and surround-

ing population centers are home to a dynamic

population that makes the Treasure Valley one

of the most vital and culturally significant

regions in the Northwest.

Very few universities can offer what Boise State

can: unparalleled, instant access to pristine

wilderness and great outdoor adventure.

A+ FOR ADVENTURE

Boise State is paradise for students who want to

mix adventure with academics. It’s a place where

you can get engaged—and get rugged. Where

you can catch air or a fish and be back in time

for finals. Where you can be king or queen of

the mountain and the classroom—all in the

same day.

Boise State earns rave reviews from snowboard-

ers, skiers, mountain bikers, whitewater rafters,

rock climbers, as well as students who like to

swim, camp, fly-fish and hike. A dream school

if you like your mountains high, your powder

deep, your rivers fast and furious and your for-

ests teeming with wildlife. Boise State delivers

nonstop wonder and thrills.

Never tried any of these adventures? Don’t

sweat it. Our Outdoor Program eliminates

the obstacles. Every year, we help hundreds

of students participate in organized trips and

adventures that teach techniques, skills and best

safety practices. And thanks to our extensive,

four-season equipment rental program, you

can get all the gear you need for an outing in

the Idaho wilderness without breaking your

student budget.

Idaho offers more than 3,100 miles of whitewa-

ter river—more than any other state in the lower

48. At world famous Sun Valley you’ll find Bald

Mountain. With a vertical drop of 3,400 feet,

it’s widely considered the best single ski moun-

tain in the world.

TRUE BLUE PRIDE

Bronco Pride is alive and well at Boise

State. Where else can you satisfy your urge

to jump up and down and cheer until your

muscles ache and your face turns blue? Any

true Broncos fan will tell you that all of

Boise State’s sports teams enjoy a long and

memorable history of thrills and successes.

From men’s and women’s basketball to indoor

and outdoor track & field, swimming and

diving to tennis and wrestling, there’s always

something to cheer about at Boise State.

There’s a common blue and orange thread

woven throughout the campus community

that supports a spirit of sportsmanship both

on and off the field. Sportsmanship isn’t just

the right way – it’s the only way as campus

and community come together in incredible

venues to cheer athletes competing in 19

men’s and women’s Division I intercollegiate

sports.

student athlete, visit broncosports.com to

The Boise State Admission Index is used to evaluate your admissibility to Boise State. It combines high school GPA and ACT or SAT scores, placing the most weight on GPA. Find your GPA across the top and your test score down the left side. Draw a line from each toward the center until they intersect. If the intersection indicates you are an Excellent Candidate, you are highly likely to be admitted. If you are a Possible Candidate, admission will depend on several factors, including your academic record, date of application, and class availability. Possible candidates may submit recommendations and a personal statement for a more comprehensive review.
