Small class sizes, instructors with industry background and all the right technology give you the tools for success. Our college knows that real-world skills and experiences are important. That’s why our programs connect you with industries and communities through projects, conferences, cooperative work placements and practicums, preparing you for a meaningful and interesting career.

Your college experience is about more than just studying: there’s always time to fit in a little fun. You should participate in events like our annual Sun of a Beach volleyball tournament, organized by your Students’ Association. Varsity sports are also popular year-round, with hockey, volleyball, soccer and futsal teams to play on or cheer on.

Students like you also compete at provincial and national competitions each year. In recent years, our students have brought home 22 medals from Skills Canada, a national competition where hundreds of students compete in skilled trades and technology contests.

Last year we welcomed more than 2,800 full-time and 8,500 part-time students. With campuses in Brandon, Dauphin and Winnipeg, we offer comprehensive education throughout the province.

Thinking about studying at ACC? Arrange for a tour at one of our campuses, spend a day test-driving a program and meet with one of our student success advisors. We’ll answer all your questions and help prepare you for a successful college career.

What program did you take at ACC? Media Production (now Interactive Media Arts)

What year did you graduate? 2005

Where are you currently employed? I work at Robots and Pencils, Inc.

What is your current job title? I’m currently Managing Director of the Winnipeg office. I also do a fair amount of app design.

How long have you been employed there? I’ve been employed at R&P for just over three years.

Briefly describe your occupation. At Robots and Pencils, we specialize in building apps. I’m in charge of conceptualization of the app, designing it and executing on the app alongside the design and development team.

Why did you choose this career path? When the iPhone came out, it became clear to me that this medium would be a game changer. With the advent of the App Store and the processing power that was inside these small devices opened up so many possibilities. My mind was racing with so many ideas on how I could leverage this technology.

Did you find it difficult to find work in your field? The app development world is in a constant state of change. ACC helped me understand that changing technologies are inevitable, but work ethic and a strong grasp of core concepts will prime you for the shifting landscape of this industry.

What additional steps did you take to get you where you are today? After college, I jumped right into the workforce. I was very lucky to get the opportunity to learn on the job. My first employers really took a chance on me and I’m very grateful.

What career related volunteer or community activities are you currently involved in? I’ve just recently started getting involved in the Winnipeg entrepreneur community with RampUp Winnipeg, Futurpreneur and Innovate Manitoba. I love the startup community and I really want to help grow that community in Winnipeg.

What were the most important skills that you gained at ACC and how have these skills applied to your career? Diversity of my skillset, work ethic and striving for perfection in everything that I do.

What advice do you have for people who may have similar interests in this field or a related one? Don’t be afraid to fail. Get out there and try things. You have to start somewhere. Failing will only make you better. Don’t be picky about your first job coming out of college. Keep getting better, network and you will eventually find your groove.

Choosing a trade program will take you on a career path that promises to be both rewarding and challenging. Roll up your sleeves and let’s get to work!

ACC’s apprenticeship training takes place at the Len Evans Centre for Trades and Technology at the North Hill Campus in Brandon.

INSTRUCTOR PROFILE GARRY JONES

“If you’re a person who likes taking things apart and seeing how things work, you should consider being an electrician. Knowing what to do when things go wrong – that’s the difference between an installer and a certified electrician.”

A Red Seal electrician by trade, Garry is a graduate of ACC’s Construction Electrician program. He’s taught in the program for nearly nine years, teaching and guiding apprentice electricians.

ELPENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY

All of our classes are conducted in English, but if English isn’t your first language, we can help!

Try our Canadian Language Benchmarks classes, which you can take in the day, evening or weekend. Most college programs require a Level 8.

You can also prove your English proficiency with our IELTS testing in either Brandon or Winnipeg. We require a minimum score of 6.5 Academic, with no sub-test less than 6.0.

Other acceptable test scores include:

• CanTEST: 4.5 reading and listening, with 4.0 writing and speaking

• TOEFL iBT: 79 overall, with no skill score less than 18

• CAEL: 60

For more information, go to assiniboine.net/elp or if you have questions, call 204.725.8723 and make an appointment to talk with a Student Success Advisor.

PL ARPRIOR LEARNING ASSESSMENT AND RECOGNITION We know that you didn’t just start learning, and we can help you accelerate your education by crediting your previous experience.

Whether you learned through previous education, personal study, work or life experience, we will compare it to what you’d expect to learn in college courses, and ensure you can get the credit you deserve.

This will help you avoid duplicating something you already know, and can reduce both the time and cost of your college education.

GOVERNMENT STUDENT AID Visit manitobastudentaid.ca for Manitoba or search for ‘student aid’ online to find information for your home province. Some funds may even come in the form of non-repayable grants: money you don’t have to pay back.

In Manitoba, provincially funded student loans are interest-free and you don’t need to start repaying until after you finish your studies.

ACC SCHOLARSHIPS, AWARDS & BURSARIESAround $200,000 is available for ACC students every year. Deadlines vary, but they are always after college starts. Visit assiniboine.net/awards to learn more.

EMPLOYMENT MANITOBAFinancial assistance is available through Employment Manitoba. Visit their office to speak to an employment consultant and discuss options for funding.

OTHER FUNDING OPPORTUNITIESIf you are First Nations or Métis, there may be other funding sources available to you. Speak to your band office or the Manitoba Métis Federation to determine your eligibility for funding.

There are also agencies that support students with disabilities and offer funding options for post-secondary education.

MONE Y MAT TERS Don’t let the cost of education hold you back. Everyone should consider applying for financial aid – chances are you’re eligible for some support! You can receive funding from more than one source, so do your research and ensure you apply to all possible sources.

Need a little guidance? Visit assiniboine.net or contact our Financial Aid & Awards office at 204.725.8700 ext 6020.

ST UDE N T S’ AS SOCIATION

There are so many services and programs provided by the ACC Students’ Association (ACCSA) and the easiest way to find out more is to drop by and see us in Room 413 at the Victoria Avenue East Campus in Brandon or email us at [email protected].

New this year, we’re excited to announce that you’ll benefit from a Health and Dental plan starting in September 2015. Students who are taking 18 credits or more in the fall and 15 or more in the winter will be automatically enrolled. But if you don’t quite meet that threshold, you can still opt in to the program. Come see us for more info or look online at studentvip.ca/accsa.

Among the support we have for students is an emergency student food bank run through Samaritan House. We believe no student should go hungry; the food bank is available for any student who runs low on groceries in the cupboard. It’s easy to access: drop by our office or fill out a request form.

If you feel you’ve been mistreated, or that a grade you’ve received is improper, we’ll help you with your appeal.

As well as services for you, we organize events throughout the year to make your college experience even more fun and memorable. These activities range from intramurals to socials and more, and are always posted online at our website, accstudents.com.

We’re proud to host Westman’s biggest and longest-running indoor beach volleyball tournament: Sun of a Beach! Stop in at our office to volunteer for this two-day, fun-filled event, which hosts volleyball teams from across Manitoba and beyond! It’s an excellent opportunity to meet new people and to expand your volunteer experience.

Speaking of volunteering, we can’t do all this without you.

Each spring, you’ll cast a vote for the next school year’s ACCSA Executive Council positions: President, VP Finance and VP Events & Marketing. Then, in September, we hold a General Student Council election to select 10 school/class representatives. The Parkland Campus in Dauphin also has four council members who are elected in September: VP Parkland, Finance Chair, Activities Coordinator, and Academic Chair.

Any student attending ACC can run for office except for distance, continuing education or apprenticeship students. Council members earn an honorarium for their work and alongside the student positions, we employ a team of professional staff to help manage our day-to-day operations.

Drop by and get involved with your ACCSA!

Your ACC Students’ Association works with you to encourage success! We’re the voice of students at ACC and work to make your student life the best it can be. The Students’ Association is made up of all students who pay student fees, including full-time, part-time, apprenticeship and Continuing Education students. Our membership is you!
