Stephanie Harvey was initially drawn to Penn State Brandy-wine by her desire to play softball at the college level. She made her decision final, though, when she considered the small class sizes, Penn State’s reputation and opportunities, and the campus environment.

“I fell in love with Brandywine as soon as I set foot on the campus. I really liked the mix of newer buildings on a campus that has a very natural feel.”

Stephanie’s first year was “pretty awesome” – she served as a Lion Ambassador, was honored as orientation leader of the year, and was a key player on the softball team, which won the Penn State University Athletic Conference championship.

“Winning the conference and then playing well in a national tournament were the most exciting moments of my softball career,” she said. “Our team was super close and we all got along really well on the field.”

Stephanie plans to transition to University Park after her sophomore year to com-plete a degree in communication sciences and disorders as part of Penn State’s 2+2 program. Meantime, she’s taking full advantage of Brandywine’s academic programs.

As part of a class project, she spent a day shadowing a speech pathologist from The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, gaining real-life experience in her field of study.

“The opportunities I’ve had” she said, “are unparalleled compared to other universities.”

THON gave me the chance to be a part of something bigger than myself.”

Page 9: Viewbook: Penn State Brandywine

“BRANDYWINEGAVE ME A WHOLE

NEW PERSPECTIVE When Alexis Proctor visited Penn State Brandywine while in high school, her student tour guide introduced her to THON – the largest student-run philanthropic organization in the world that raises funds and awareness for the fight against pediatric cancer.

“When I saw my tour guide’s enthusiasm for THON, I knew I wanted to be a part of the organization and the Penn State community,” she said.

As a sophomore, Alexis was selected to be one of Brandywine’s dancers for THON’s annual weekend-long dance marathon, which includes hundreds of participants and thousands of supporters. She recently became a leader of Brandywine THON by serving as the organization’s vice president.

“Through THON, I’ve been able to make a difference and help others over-come pediatric cancer,” Alexis said. “It’s hard to describe in words what it was like to be a dancer at THON Weekend. To know that I was helping children conquer their battles was a surreal experience.”

Alexis, who’s majoring in business, likes how easy it is to get involved at Brandywine and is as active as possible. In addition to THON, she is a mem-ber of Brandywine’s Student Government Association, which has allowed her to become a student leader and make positive impacts on the campus com-munity.

“Many people go through life not realizing the struggles that others face every day,” she said. “Penn State Brandywine gave me a whole new perspective on life and what my role should be.”

gEven though they had just arrived at Penn State Brandywine, Coleman Hart and David Spencer didn’t waste any time getting involved on campus and quickly became leaders.

The pair competed at Phi Beta Lambda’s National Leadership Confer-ence in Chicago, Illinois, and took home sixth place in the nation in the management analysis and decision making category. Phi Beta Lambda is an educational association that brings together students preparing for careers in business through leadership and career development programs.

“Winning sixth place while going up against thousands of students from around the country was one of the greatest feelings of my life,” Coleman said.

“Taking the skills we learned at Penn State Brandywine and applying them to the real world gave us a new learning experience we couldn’t get in the classroom,” David added.

The ambitious duo easily got involved at the campus and quickly learned that opportunities are available to students through various student clubs and organizations, as well as leadership development and honors programs.

David recently transitioned to University Park to complete his degree in finance as part of Penn State’s 2+2 program. Coleman, who’s majoring in business, will finish his four-year degree at Brandywine.

The devoted faculty and staff promote critical thinking and academic achievement in an intel-lectually stimulating environment. Students are motivated to make a difference for the environ-ment, the community, and the members of campus via faculty-guided research, service-learning projects, and volunteer work.

Students may begin at and graduate from Penn State Brandywine as a Cooper or Schreyer Honors Scholar. Both programs allow highly mo-tivated scholars to participate in small, specially designed courses, both on campus and in study abroad through Brandywine Global Programs. Scholars can engage in undergraduate research and showcase their work through conferences and publications.
