The capture of Rhodes by the Ottoman Turks forced the Order to spend seven years wandering in search of a temporary base in the Mediterranean from which it could stage the re-conquest of Rhodes. In 1523, Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor and King of Spain, had already offered the islands of Malta, Gozo and the Spanish fortress of Tripoli in North Africa to the Order.
