Assessment: Relating to the 13 Moons by Bring Authentic First Peoples Content to the K-3 ClassroomLesson:

1. Before reading, ask: What is an activity you can do outdoors during this season? Share with your elbow partner and activity you do with your family. Write/draw as many activities.

2. Ask: Talk & share about the signs of the seasons, start with current season. How do we know when it is that season? (Prompt: noticing different plants with different uses).

3. What is Aboriginal? Ask: What is Aboriginal, get responses by show of hands. First Nations, Metis and Inuit. Introduce beaded timeline to create the understanding Aboriginal people of Canada have been here for thousands of years.

4. Read: 13 Moons on the Turtles back. Discuss the signs of the season and connections to each month and what is happening in the pictures with nature.

5. Have students draw/write their favorite outdoor activity moon/season connection that they do with their families. Share with elbow partner, share with class.

6. Assessment: Relating to the 13 Moons7. Ask: What did you learn today about moons/seasons.

Beaded timeline.

The first bead represents 10 years, ask: how old are you? Most students’ age would be on the first bead. A generation is 2 beads, show them two beads. If we added the next generation (4 beads) who would that is? Yes! Your parents. And if we added two more? Grandparents. Add two more, yes! Great-grandparents. Show that those 8 beads represent a lot of time in their family doesn’t it. The first group of beads represents the first 500 years Europeans have been in Canada. The beads mid-evil times this is 1000 years. The group of beads represents Mayan Civilizations 225CE. Black bead is ZERO. Then we go BCE (Before Common Era) the first group of beads represents 650 years which is the Roman Empire. The next group of beads represents 1800 years in time which is Ancient China. Then Ancient India which is 2500 years BCE. The next group of beads represents 3550 BCE Ancient Mesopotamia. All these beads are close to 5600 years. The remaining beads 4400 years are the amount of time Aboriginal people have been in Canada.
