SCRIPTURE LESSON Luke 24: 13-35

Now on that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, and talking with each other about all these things that had happened. While they were talking and discussing, Jesus himself came near and went with them, but their eyes were kept from recognizing him. And he said to them, “What are you discussing with each other while you walk along?” They stood still, looking sad. Then one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only stranger in Jerusalem who does not know the things that have taken place there in these days?” He asked them, “What things?” They replied, “The things about Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before

God and all the people, and how our chief priests and leaders handed him over to be condemned to death and crucified him. But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things took place. Moreover, some women of our group astounded us. They were at the tomb early this morning, and when they did not find his body there, they came back and told us that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who said that he was alive. Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but they did not see him.” Then he said to them, “Oh, how foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have declared! Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and then enter into his glory?” Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them the things about himself in all the scriptures.

As they came near the village to which they were going, he walked ahead as if he were going on. But they urged him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, because it is almost evening and the day is now nearly over.” So he went in to stay with them. When he was at the table with them, he took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him; and he vanished from their sight. They said to each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road, while he was opening the scriptures to us?” That same hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem; and they found the eleven and their companions gathered together. They were saying, “The Lord has risen indeed, and he has appeared to Simon!” Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he had been made known to them in the breaking of the bread.

THE SACRAMENT OF HOLY COMMUNION

Invitation to the Table

The Great Prayer of Thanksgiving

Leader: God be with you. All: And also with you.Leader: Lift up your hearts. All: We lift them up to God.Leader: Let us give thanks to God Most High. All: It is right to give God our thanks and praise.

Leader: O God of majesty and mercy, we bless you for the beauty and bounty of the earth and for the vision of the day when sharing by all will mean scarcity for none. You have set us in the world to love and serve you, and to live in peace with your whole creation.

We remember your covenant with our ancestors in the faith, the prophets you sent to call us back to your way, and how, in the fullness of time, out of your great love for the world, you sent your beloved son to be one of us, to redeem us, to heal us, and to form us anew to be your people in the world.

Therefore, we praise you, joining our voices with choirs of angels, with prophets, apostles, and with all the faithful of every time and place, who forever sing to the glory of your name:

Sanctus sung by all to the tune Nicaea

All: Holy! Holy! Holy! One God Almighty! All your works shall praise your name in earth and sky and sea! Holy! Holy! Holy! Hosanna in the highest! Blessed is Christ who comes to set us free!

Words of Remembrance Leader: Blessed is our brother Jesus, bone of our bone and flesh of our flesh; who on the night when he was delivered over to death, took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and said: “This is my body, which is for you. Do this to re-member me.’ In the same way also the cup, after supper, saying: ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, whenever you drink it, to remember me.’ For, as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we are proclaiming the Lord’s death until he comes.

All: Remembering all your mighty and merciful acts, we break this bread and share this cup, giving thanks for your saving love in Jesus Christ. As you raised Jesus from death and call us with him from death to life, may we bear witness to your resurrection power, alive and at large in our world.

Prayer of Consecration Leader: Gracious God, may the bread we break and the cup we bless become for us the communion of the body and blood of Christ. By your Spirit make

us one with Christ, that we may be united with all your people in every time and place. As Christ our Savior has taught us, let us pray together, saying:

All: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Sharing of the Bread and the Cup These are the gifts of God for the people of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died and was raised for you.

All are invited to come forward, as directed by our Ushers, to receive the bread and cup standing in a semi-circle

in front of the communion table, dipping the bread into the cup and remaining until the words of blessing.

Strengthen our faith, increase our love for one another, and send us forth into the world in courage and peace, rejoicing in the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

CHURCH PRAYEROur Heavenly Father, shed forth thy blessed spirit upon all our lives. Make each one of us an instrument in thy hands for good. Purify our hearts, strengthen our minds and bodies, fill us with Christian love. Let no pride, no self-conceit, no rivalry, no ill-will

ever spring up among us. Make us earnest and true, wise and prudent, giving no just cause for offense and may thy holy peace rest upon us this day and every day throughout the coming week, sweetening our trials, cheering us in our work, and keeping us faithful to the end, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

“The miracle of Communion means the rich bowing down with the poor, the learned with the unlearned, the clean with the filthy, the master with the slave, the privileged with the deprived, the white with the black, and the black with the white.”
