2018 Spring Retreat/Annual Meeting

“SPRING SEW-CIAL”

Join us for a fun weekend in St Charles, MO for our 2018 Spring Retreat/Annual Meeting. The dates are April 6-8 at the brand new Drury Plaza Hotel. We will set up at 9 AM on Friday morning and sew, visit, learn, eat, share, laugh, and learn a new method of cutting without any special tools or cutters. You will need your rotary cutter, rulers, and your mat. See the supply list.

Saturday evening

****Friendship Block. Bring as many blocks as you would like, you will receive a ticket for each block and maybe win a set of blocks for yourself. You can only win once, so bring lots of blocks to boost your chances. This block can be made in any color you choose. Maybe keep the backgrounds on the light side.

****Fat Quarter Drawings. Bring as many fat quarters as you want. Roll each one up with your name inside (those pesky return address labels work well for this)

****Show and Tell will be on Saturday evening. Bring up to two (2) items to share with the group.

****Surprises

****50/50 Drawing will be held on Sunday after our Annual Meeting and election of officers.

I am Deborah Easter Rubles, author of QUILTERS' CUTTING GUIDE, The Sliding Ruler Method

“Cutting” is a dreadful word to many quilters. If quilters did not have to “cut” fabric, there would probably be twice as many quilts in the world today! This is the one task that quilters either hate or love. Many tackle this task as something they just have to do, with the same enthusiasm as when they schedule their annual visit to the dentist.

My father was an independent professional photographer specializing in wedding photographs. To support his ten children, everything was either made from scratch or recycled. One of the jobs that I had as a teenager to support this family-owned business was to cut up cardboard boxes, cut pieces to a certain size using an old paper cutter and scissors and then gluing or taping the cardboard pieces together to make small special-sized boxes for storing negatives of photographs (this was way before digital cameras!). I never dreamed at that time that I would be doing very similar tasks (except cutting up fabric and sewing it back together instead of cardboard) as an adult in order to make beautiful quilts. I never owned a quilt as a child nor knew of anyone who quilted.

I stumbled upon my first quilt store in Lebanon, Missouri, where my husband and I had just moved to approximately 17 years ago. It was a very stressful time in our lives due to a family illness; I had a day off work and was looking for some pillowcases to embroider, anything to keep my hands busy and my mind off our problems. Someone in downtown Lebanon referred me to a quilt store north of town. I found and ventured into the store and was totally amazed at the beautiful quilts hanging on all the walls of the shop.

The owner and her staff were so friendly and had me signed up for my first quilting class before I left her store. I found my new love and passion-quilting; but best of all-cured my stress!

I will have to admit, I LOVE, LOVE cutting out new fabric for a new quilt, (but then I LOVE IRONS also!). When I first learned how to quilt more than 17 years ago, I did not know what a “rotary cutter” or “cutting mat” was, had absolutely no idea! Now, I am considered an “expert” at using these tools and friends stand in line for me to cut out their kits or fabric. I don’t mind cutting some out, but would much rather show them how to make it easier so that they will not “dread” cutting out fabric as much.

SPIRIT AWARD

At the April 2017 board meeting in Columbia MO, the MSQG board authorized the establishment of a new recognition program called the Spirit Award. In conjunction with the existing Missouri Quilters Hall of Fame (recognition of a lifetime of achievement outlined in the membership book), the Spirit Award will recognize those members who promote MSQG through their enthusiasm and willingness to work for the benefit of all members. While these two programs are similar, the Spirit Award may include newer members, those who concentrate on a single area of MSQG life (event, committee, etc), or may/ may not serve in a titled position, such as board member, chairman, etc.

Nominations for the Spirit Award can be postmarked from November 1, 2017 – March 16, 2018. Up to five recipients, known as the Class of 2018, will be chosen (by written ballot) by a panel of MSQG board members and Spirit Award committee members present at the Spring Meeting. The first induction ceremony will be at the 2018 fall retreat. An appropriate award will be presented to each inductee.

The funding for our committee will begin with a memorial gift presented by the family of Ellen O’Bryan, our dear past president (2015). There is still much planning to do, and we are open to ideas from everyone. We are looking for other members to join our Spirit Award committee. We want it to be upbeat, creative, and fun. it’s not too early to consider who you might nominate for the Hall of Fame or the new Spirit Award. 2017 Fall Retreat Wrap-Up:The MSQG Ying Yang, Traditional Quilting with a Modern Twist retreat was held in Jefferson City, on the weekend of October 6-8. With so many competing quilt events during October 2017, the retreat attendance was low. However, the number in attendance did not stop the

weekend from being amazing! Those in attendance came to learn and party with their friends. They were not disappointed!

This year, we had 12 new members in attendance! One new attendee, Pat Choraskis, came all the way from Alabama to attend our fun weekend. She is thinking she may come next year. How about that?

Cheri Hofeldt and Terri Kanyuck would like to thank everyone who assisted in creating the amazing retreat…. It took everyone--- thanks to:

Joyce Timmerman for procuring and presenting the past president plaque to Joyce O’Connell. Her acknowledgement of Joyce’s tenor was deeply appreciated by Joyce.

Joyce Timmerman for presenting the show and tell with professionalism and pizazz. She also did a wonderful presentation for past presidents in attendance.

Marilyn Chaplin for donating 40 yards of her stash and creating the fun, colorful centerpieces. Everyone took home a fat free fat quarter lollipop to remember Saturday’s dinner.

Casey York, Judy Brinker, Dolores Keaton, Ann McNew, Nancy Pleimann, and Lesa Spegal for teaching great classes.

Joyce O’Connell for the high spirited, fun trivia game on Friday evening. Hannibal Piecemakers -- This guild held a special drawing from a pool of their members

that had never attended a MSQG retreat. The lucky winner was Linda Belford, who attended the retreat as a guest of her guild. Linda, also, won $100 from the Ways and Means drawing with a jar of colorful buttons. (If you would like to see the delightful snowmen gifts she made with the buttons, visit our Facebook page.) Linda had a very lucky MSQG 2017!

Mary Anne Kemper for the quilt study presentation and drawings. We always learn new quilty facts from her.

Brenda Hancock for hotel coordination. Janice Almquist and the LeGrand sisters (Marilyn Montano and Pat Choraskis) for

participating in Terri Kanyuck’s jellyroll race. Janice squeaked it out. However, Marilyn was heard saying that she lost because she stopped to help her sister rethread. Pat is thinking she may hear about it for a while, just saying….. LOL All had fun!

Also thanks to --

Everyone who came. Everyone who invited a friend to join the retreat. Everyone who visited and / or purchased from our vendors.

Everyone who donated items or bought tickets for Jan McKeage’s Ways and Means raffle.

Everyone who participated in the Sew and Sell on Saturday evening. Everyone who brought quilts for Show and Tell. Everyone who participated in the Ying Yang challenge – making something useful with

the ‘Ying Yang’ theme in mind. Everyone who donated Pillow cases. These pillowcases were distributed to multiple

Missouri regions spreading a little fun for all over Missouri. Everyone who participated in the optional block exchange.

Otherwise, we would not have had a retreat and such a great guild!!!
