Viewing & Logging your rushes. TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS.
For each short shot that you capture, look at what you have shot and ask the following questions. If you have any ticks in the right hand column (i.e. a no answer regarding the picture or a yes answer regarding audio, then your shot doesnt meet the minimum technical requirements and you should NOT capture the clip unless you really dont have anything else!!
Analysing the PictureYesNo
Is the shot in SHARP focus throughout?
Have you correctly white balanced? Are the skin colours correct?
Is the shot correctly exposed?
Does the exposure remain fixed during the shot? (i.e. was it set to manual?)
Framing
Does the framing look nice?
Is the looking room on the correct side? Is your character looking into space?
Is the camera angle appropriate?
Have you followed the rule of thirds in your shot composition?
Does the eyeline feel right?
Is the boom/mic completely out of the shot?
Operating
Is the shot steady (enough)?
Is the tripod level?
Does the camera feel at the correct height?
Lighting
Does the lighting look nice?
Technical issues
Is the shot completely clear of digital dropout?
If the shot is a cutaway, have you recorded a minimum of 15 seconds?
Have you recorded an extra 5-10 seconds at the start and end of the shot?
Shots with camera movement
Does the camera movement have a definite start point?
Does the camera movement have a definite end point?
Is the panning/tilting/tracking smooth enough?
Is the panning/tilting/tracking at the appropriate speed?
Analysing the AudioNoYes
Are the audio levels peaking?
Are the audio levels so low that they hardly register?
Is there any dropout or distortion in the sound?
Can I hear every word clearly?
Is there any distracting echo/reverb?
Is the background noise (in an interview) distracting or too loud?
