Thought for this week…..by Rev. Canon Trevor Denley One general theme for the readings last week were that we should be following

in the way of the Lord in both action and speech. Our readings ask us to consider wisdom in our daily life, both work and leisure. We have been told that the law of the Lord is clear, and that those who follow it are blameless. We have also been told that the tongue controls the entire self and that it can guide us into goodness. Each of these passages challenges us to avoid taking the easy and thoughtless way

out of a situation, and choose God’s way. Here Jesus lays this message down loud and clear: “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it.” The way of the cross is costly and Jesus never attempts to hide this fact from his followers. This may seem rather radical or even distant to us as perhaps in the setting in which we live we are ‘bearing a cross’ might only mean some

scornful comments or a bit of sneering, but nonetheless takes courage and faith. What are some gospel truths that we think are worth setting aside our own comfort and peace? In what ways did the passages encourage us or challenge us to consider what it means to follow Christ differently or more openly? What situation in our life or in our community might Jesus be calling us into to make a difference? In what ways might that be a comfortable or an uncomfortable one?
