Developing holiday traditions: A gift for the man who hated Christmas

How families celebrate the holidays will differ as much as the families

themselves. At Christmas, some will read the Bible’s Christmas story or The Night Before Christmas.

Others will go to grandma’s house to open gifts. Where people live close to their churches, they may march in a group to at-tend midnight mass.

Even Christmas tree decorations often have traditional meanings. The ornaments hand-ed down to them and decorations made by their children over the years can tell the story of a family’s history. Other Christmas traditions develop spontaneously, then are repeated year after year.

This was the case in the Nancy Gavin’s family. Their tradition began some 40 years ago and is still being followed in her family and others. Her story, “The Man Who Hated Christmas,” was published in Woman’s Day magazine in 1982.

Gavin’s husband, Mike, was always aggra-vated by the hectic effort to buy gifts. He loved the true meaning of Christmas but not the commercialism.

One year, their 12-year-old son was on his school’s wrestling team when a match was scheduled with a new team from an inner-city church. Her son’s team, with their new uniforms and equipment, met the inner-city team shortly before Christmas. The new church team was strutting and proud, but they had no uniforms, wresting shoes or helmets to protect their ears.

Mike loved kids and coached several sports, he wished the church team had won just one match, but they did not. It gave Nancy the idea for Mike’s gift. She visited a sporting goods store, bought an assort-ment of headgear and wrestling shoes and

sent them anonymously to the church.

On Christmas Eve, she placed a note ex-plaining what she had done in a small, white envelope on the tree. With no name and no identification the envelope was just there, stuck between the branches of the tree. The next morning, the white envelope was the last, surprise gift, given to Mike. He was delighted and moved by Nancy’s gift.

The envelope became the highlight of the Gavins’ Christmas. It was always the last thing opened on Christmas morning, and their children, ignoring their new toys, would stand with wide-eyed anticipation as their dad opened the envelope.

After Mike died, Nancy struggled just to put up a tree. But on Christmas Eve she placed an envelope on its branches. In the morning, she found that it was joined by three more. Each of their grown children had placed an envelope on the tree for their

dad. Nancy said, “Mike’s spirit, likethe Christmas spirit, will always be with us.”

Today, thousands of others celebrate Christmas each year with a “white enve-lope.” For more information visit WhiteEn-velopeProject.org.

Thank you for the quick response to our letter asking for a vote on the audit waiver. Your response was astounding. I never get to use that word. But, I

like it. Astounding fits. I think that every member must have responded in our first “vote-by-mail” election. The audit waiver passed by a colossal margin.

A special thing about this audit waiver is that so many of you hand delivered the audit waiver form. We got a chance to meet and talk. It was a delight to meet you all. (I like to think that you wanted to save the 42 cents postage. Maybe you are prospective board members?) I got several phone calls from exotic locations from those of you on vacation. They wanted to know if they could vote by phone or they could fax their votes. Thank you.

Lacamas Shores has one of the few HOA in our area that functions efficiently with an all volunteer board. Careful management saves our member’s money and results in a safe and beautiful neighborhood. Your board is available year round to conduct HOA business and meet with every neighbor who has a problem, question or complaint. We meet regularly with the Camas City and occasionally with the Clark County governments.

Coming up in December, we have the Christmas decorations contest, several caroling expeditions are forming, and the second annual Christmas cart parade is on schedule. And in February, we will have our annual HOA meeting. Last year’s meeting was well attended and included a “meet your neighbor” get together. It was a hugh success and we are planning to do it again this year. We always have a good time when we get together as a neighborhood. Please consider running for the HOA board, and we’ll see you all next year.

A BIG Thank You from the HOA Boardby Richard Arnold, HOA President

Serving on the Lacamas Shores Homeowner’s Board of Direc-tors is a great way to get involved in your neighborhood and

community. The elections are held each year at the annual Ho-meowner’s meeting in February. The board is made up of seven volunteers who each serve two-year terms, staggered.

This year there are several positions up for election. Specific board positions are voted by the members once they are elected. To par-ticipate on the board, you must be a member of the association in good standing or immediate family member residing in the mem-ber’s home.

Please consider running for a position on the Homeowner’s As-sociation Board of Directors. If you are interested, let us know so we can publish a short bio/ article in the next VIEWS (prefer-ably with a picture). To get started, contact the VIEWS editors [email protected] or any board member before the next VIEWS deadline, January 15, 2009. Homeowner’s are welcome to attend board meetings. For board meeting dates and times, check the VIEWS, the Lacamas Shores website calendar, www.lacamas-shores.org, or contact a board member. GET INVOLVED!!

Board Position Openings

During the recent audit waiver vote, the question of digital voting came up again. Several homeowner’s have asked

why we can’t deliver the VIEWS via email, fill out and deliver the Architectural and Landscape form electronically and vote on topics such as the audit waiver online? We do conduct the Neighborhood Watch completely by email but sign-up for the notification is voluntary.

There are many areas of HOA business where we must be sure the information is delivered and mail seems to be the safest method at this time. For one thing, we do not have emails for most people. Also, people tend to change their email more often than their mailing address. Some homeowner’s either don’t use email or don’t check their email very often. Some of the forms require several signatures and online signing doesn’t allow for verification without a complicated system and a lot of expense.

Soooo...where do we go from here? One thing we could do now to move us into the digital age is put the neighborhood directory online at www.lacamasshores.org. The directory would be in a password protected area for homeowner’s only. This would make it easier to keep the directory up to date than is currently feasible with a hard copy.

We would like to hear from you. Is it a good idea, bad idea? Know how we can implement some of these ideas? Let us know by sending an email to [email protected] or start a discussion on the [email protected].

It’s everywhere! It’s all over my front yard! It’s not mine. What now? Well,

I guess I’d better clean it up. I’ll get soaked and frozen but if I don’t do it, who will? I’d better hurry too, the garbage man is about to come. So, how did this happen? HHHmmmm, let’s see. This is the time of year when windy, rainy weather can take us by surprise.

! ! ! G A R B A G E ! ! !

The Red Cross is partnering with Pit-ney Bowes this holiday season for

the Holiday Mail for Heroes campaign. For the second year in a row, we’re col-lecting holiday cards to distribute to American service members, veterans and their families in the United States and around the world. Pitney Bowes is gen-erously donating technology, resources and postage to make this holiday card program possible.

Our goal is to collect and distribute one million holiday cards to spread holiday cheer and facilitate thanks to these brave individuals and families.

Please send cards to this address, follow-ing the guidelines listed on: www.redcross.org/email/saf/

Once again this year at the Lacamas Lake

clean-up revealed some unique items that any antique store would have been proud to have. Some items were exhumed from their former watery graves and given a proper burial. Once the level of the lake was lowered for such a worthy cause it was fantastic to see teams of citizens descend upon the treasure that graced the muddy surface exposed.

It is becoming traditional for the Clark County’s Sheriffs Department to have “first dibs” on all vehicles that forcibly break the surface as the water redeeded. No less than 5 stolen vehicles were pulled from the lake this year. All fish therein became part of the US overall foreclosure situation and were forced to vacate the “crushed corinthian leather” and Recaro seats that used to be their living room.

Two radial tires, multiple beer bottles, a gas can and a duck decoy were also located, appropriately, on the South shore leading many event supervisors to call NASCAR to see if any of their brethren took that “wrong turn at Albuquerque” and wound up on our lake shore this last year. Suspicion heightened when one of the 5 cars pulled from the lake had the number “43” on it. Within was a note from someone named “Billie Bob” saying “went for more beer, watch my shotgun and call me if Earnhardt does better than 2nd!” Another give away

Annual Lacamas Lake Clean-up...SUCCESSby JP Brooks

Anna Brown & Geri Brooks

was that he spelled “shotgun” with the number 6.

NASCAR had “no comment” but many from Louisiana showed up post towing to see if any crawdads came with the abandoned cars.

Levity aside it was wonderful to be one who assisted my wife

& kids on how to take care of our world and watch the kids in a “green” mindset. To make such an exceplary cause “fun” is also something that bring kids of all ages together. We all must remember that even though we don’t get together and sing “Kum by Yah” and make smores we need to think of our surroundings as something we have charge over and it is our responsibility to care for. A worthy function such as this reminds me of what I read and has motivated me often to go beyond what is expected of us. The saying goes like this: “One cannot spray perfume on someone else without getting some on yourself”. No doubt it does us all good to feel like we’ve done something that improves the environment but more importantly I know my kids enjoyed getting mud caked on their boots while making a difference. For those who helped, I bet you felt good too. Thought so,...next year were hoping to have a car “pool” and play license plate bingo for all vehicles recovered. See you there.

To prevent your garbage from ending up in your neighbor’s yard, be sure to weigh down all paper and lightweight objects in your recyclying bins. This will also help keep the bins in place on exceptionally windy days. Our neighborhood will be cleaner and your neighbors will thank you.

While the biggest banks are suffer-ing from a subprime mortgage fall-

out, community banks and credit unions haven’t had big losses. They never made risky loans. Credit unions are different from other financial institutions because they are not-for-profit cooperatives. They are owned by the members and operated mostly by volunteer boards.

One financial analyst interviewed on Fox Business says the shareholders and board members in credit unions know their own money is at risk when they make a loan, so they are more conservative.

The capital in credit unions is at an all-

Credit Unions, small banks shine in difficult timestime high, according to the Credit Unions National Association, Inc., in Madison, Wisc. It’s a safety cushion that protects them against loss and that allows them to continue in spite of recessions or turbulent financial markets.

They are known for share accounts, which may pay a little more interest than bank savings accounts, and for their auto loans, which may cost a little less. Most also offer mortgages.

Credit Unions are particularly important right now because most banks have tight-ened their lending standards and may make loans only to people with the highest credit

scores.

Some credit unions can refinance subprime mortgages, and offer other banking prod-ucts no longer available from other lend-ers, including a five-year adjustable-rate mortgage. One reason: They don’t pay dividends to shareholders. The money is reinvested in loans to meet the needs of their members.

The American Bankers Association en-courages consumers trying to consolidate debt or refinance mortgages to contact community banks. While they are typically conservative, according to The Wall Street Journal, they have plenty of money to lend.

We’re only a short time away from the 2nd

Annual Christmas Cart Parade on December 7th and your invited to participate. To make sure there are enough golf carts for all participants, please contact Steve Bang at [email protected] or Sarah Bang at [email protected].

We will meet at Camas Meadows around 4:00 PM to decorate and get ready for the magic. At approximately 5:30 PM the carts take off for the streets of Lacamas Shores where we play music and exhibit our amazing cart decorating skills. We will also be picking up toys which will be given to the Inter-Faith Treasure House in Camas

The 2nd Annual Christmas Cart ParadePlan to Participate or Cheer Us On and Donate Toys

for distribution to kids. You may leave the toys on your doorstep but if your home, please come out and cheer us on. Rumor is Logan Brooks and Max Urbanek are planning to play Christmas songs on their Alto Saxophones for this golf cart parade. Here’s what you need to participate:

* Warm clothes and mittens – we’re not kidding.

* Large Flashlight

* An inverter that can be attached to a golf cart battery. NOT the cigarette lighter kind!

* LED lights and figures. NOT regular lights as they draw too much power and you’ll go dark as you climb the hills to the cul de sacs.

* Other glittery decorations

* Zip ties,bungee cords, and/or clips

* Hand bell or jingle bells

WE”LL SEE YOU THERE!!

If you’re beginning to notice a touch of middle-age spread, there’s a good reason

for it. It’s not that you are eating more than you used to. In fact, you could be eating less and gaining weight.

Doctors at the Weight Management Center of the University of Pittsburgh say metabo-lism slows by 5 percent every decade after age 25. You will burn 100 calories less at age 35, 200 calories less at age 45, and it continues after that.

With age, muscle mass declines with your metabolic rate, the number of calories you burn in 24 hours including sleeping and ac-tive time. Muscle burns more calories than fat.

When you want to lose weight, it pays to lose slowly, say researchers at McMaster University in Ontario. Reduce calories but not dramatically and include more protein from chicken, fish and lean meat in your

diet. Protein will help to preserve your muscle mass.

Exercise, but don’t just do cardio. Walking, biking and swimming help the heart and lungs but in most cases, they don’t build much muscle.

Pumping iron does. Regular strength train-ing builds muscles that burn more calories day and night. And muscle takes less space. Replace three pounds of fat with three pounds of muscle, and you’ll be smaller.

Fidgeting and incidental movement make a difference. It’s called non-exercise ther-mogenesis.

Take advantage of thermogenesis by mov-ing as often as possible. Get up from the couch frequently, walk the dog or pump a few dumbbells during a TV commercial. People with high thermogenesis energy burn about 350 more calories a day than those who don’t.

In his new book, Brain Rules: 12 Prin-ciples for Surviving and Thriving at

Work, Home, and School, (Pear Press) John Medina uses plain English to describe how the brain functions at work and at school. Medina is the director of the Brain Center for Applied Learning Research at Seattle Pacific University.

Though there is quite a bit of technical ma-terial in the book, readers can get the nuts-and-bolts advice and information from the one-page summary at the end of each chap-ter. There is an associated Web site and a DVD is included. Medina’s rules include:

* Exercise boosts brain power.

* We don’t pay attention to boring things.

* Sleep well because that’s when the brain processes the day’s learning.

* Stressed brains don’t work very well.

* Vision trumps all other senses. People begin to pay less attention to long texts. He advocates more instruction using pictures.

* We are powerful and natural explorers. The greatest brain rule is the importance of curiosity, but curiosity is not stressed in the educational system. Only grades are valued.

Regardless of age, Medina says, we can and should be life-long learners.

It all started a long time ago, actually 2,162 years ago if historians are correct.

In 153 B.C., the first month of the year was named for a mythical king of early Rome named Janus.

With two faces, Janus could look back on past events and forward into the future. He became the symbol for New Year’s resolutions. Many Ro-mans asked for forgive-ness from their enemies, decided how to improve themselves, and ex-changed gifts just before the new year be-gan.

Modern New Year’s resolutions have a reputation for being forgotten or discarded within days or weeks of the holiday. If done seriously, however, starting the new year with a legitimate plan can be success-ful. Here’s how to do it.

Happy New Year!Resolutions have checkered history but can still work

* Take responsibility for the change so your motivation will be sustained.

* Be realistic. Habits and behaviors that are changed gradually have a greater chance of success.

* Redefine physical dis comfort. Psychologist Pauline Wallin, editor of The Pennsylvania Psychol- ogist, says the physical discomfort of not smoking can be redefined as cleans- ing your body. Discomfort from not overeating can be a sign that your body has to

go to fat reserves for energy.

* Make it non-negotiable. Exercise at the same time every day. Whatever your plan, practice it every day.

No one will be perfect at making difficult changes, but if you falter, learn from your mistake and move on. There will never be a perfect time to make changes, so do it now.

It’s been a long time since we’ve enjoyed a Progressive Party in the

neighbor hood. Some newer neighbors may not even be aware they can easily host and meet a lot of their neighbors in the process.

A Lacamas Shores Progressive Party is traditionally a two course party, Hors d’oeuvres* & Dessert. The guests bring the food and drink and the host provides the glasses, dishes, etc. We meet at the first house for drinks and finger food around 7:00 PM and move to the second house around 8:30 for dessert. While the parties are commonly tame, discussions have run into the wee hours. As a host, it is your call when they end.

The neighborhood Progressive Parties are fun and a great way to get acquainted with your neighbors. New friendships have been formed plus talking among ourselves creates a stronger neighborhood to support our common interests.

Let’s restart this wonderful neighborhood tradition. Be the first in the New Year to host a Progressive Party. To sign up, email [email protected] or

King Day of ServiceA day ON, not a day OFF

Martin Luther King Jr. Day, January 19, was first celebrated

in 1986. But many who wished to honor King wanted his day to be more than a play-filled holiday. They wanted it to represent all that King stood for including brotherhood, nonviolence, and reconciliation.

In 1994, Senator Harris Wofford and Congressman John Lewis co-authored the King Holiday and Service Act, which was signed into law by President Bill Clinton. This Act was to encourage people of all races to volunteer in some way on this day.

Want to help others but don’t know how? Visit mlkday.gov for information on a list of projects (by state) that are planned in Martin Luther King, Jr.’s name for

Notice of Annual Homeowners Meeting Richard Arnold, President Board of Directors Lacamas Shores Homeowners Association

Please plan to attend the annual hom-eowners meeting. This is a great oppor-

tunity to meet your neighbors and talk about issues that affect us all. There are two items on this year’s agenda that require your vote.

The first ballot is the annual vote on whether we should hire an outside CPA firm to audit our financial records at a cost of approxi-mately $3,000. This decision must be made by a quorum of homeowners which requires a minimum of 87 yes votes. Last year it took until September to get enough votes and required a separate mailing. Please place your vote by the meeting date. The ballot is in this issue of the VIEWS and on www.lacamasshores.org.

The second ballot asks for your vote on neighbors who are offering to serve on the LS Board of Directors. Three seats are up for election. Current board members, Jeff Nelson, Kathi Rota and Gerry Vincent are running for re-election. Write-in candidates are also allowed or you may nominate some-one at the meeting.

Also, included in this copy of the VIEWS are financial statements for 2008. Included are preliminary assests and liabilities report and the 2008 summary. If you have any questions regarding either the financial state-ments or the proposed budget, please hold them until the meeting.

If you are unable to attend the LSHOA an-nual meeting on February 20, 2009, fill out

the enclosed ballots and hand them to a board member or a neighbor who can attend the meeting. Votes must be received by 7:00 PM February 20, 2009 to be counted, and your 2009 annual assessment must be paid in full in order to be eligible to vote.

Last year’s social gathering after the meeting was well attended and very popular. Camas Meadows will again extend their happy hour for us and there will be appetizers and music. The Zuzo blues band will play from 8-11 PM. Band mem-bers are Todd Jensen (played with Alice Cooper), Steve Parry (from Journey), and Paul Rogers (Bad Company & David Lee Roth). This is a great opportunity to meet neighbors and make new friends. As we all know, many

problems can be solved simply by talking to your neighbors.

Issue: Should the Homeowners Association waive the requirement to audit the financial statements of the Association for 2008 and conduct an internal audit by the Audit Committee, or hire an independent certified public accounting (CPA) firm to audit the statements?

We are required to vote on this issue in order to comply with the Washington state Homeowners Association Act of 1995. Five years ago, we hired a CPA firm to audit our books and financial statements and they found no discrepancies. The cost of this audit, from the CPA firm and our outside accounting firm, totaled approximately $3,000. The Lacamas Shores HOA Audit Committee always does an annual inde-pendent audit of the financial statements.

The LS Board has unanimously voted to recommend we waive the outside audit and conduct an internal audit by our Auditing Committee. The Audit Committee audited our books last year and found no discrepancies. This decision must be made by a quorum of homeowners which requires a minimum of 83 votes – therefore we would appreciate all residents participating in this vote.

_______Waive the requirement to audit the 2008 LS financial records/statements by an independent CPA firm (an internal audit of the 2008 LS financial records/statements will be performed by the Audit Committee instead).

_______Require an independent CPA firm to audit the 2008 LS financial records at a cost of approximately $3,000.

Lacamas Shores Homeowners Association2008 YTD Reserve Account

Summary Sheet

One of the most important assets held by an association is its replacement reserve fund. The main goal of the fund is to

protect property values for the common areas and for the indi-vidual residences within the neighborhood. Reserve funds protect property by providing the means to replace deteriorated capital assets before they become a problem.

A reserve study was performed during 2004 on Lacamas Shores’ capital assets. A reserve specialist was hired to make a visit to our neighborhood, inventory all our assets, and determine the condi-tion and life of the assets. The specialist then prepared a twenty year schedule of the repairs or replacements that are recommended

to be made each year. The level of yearly funding into the reserve fund was also recommended along with a minimum balance that the fund should maintain in order to handle any unforeseen ex-penses.

Now that we have a reserve study in place, the chances of having a “special assessment” are lessened. The future repairs and replace-ments of capital assets are now scheduled on a yearly basis for upkeep. An additional benefit is that the Lacamas Shores HOA Board can plan to keep our homeowner dues at the same rate for many years to come. The reserve account is a responsibel addition to the Lacamas Shores financials!

If thousands of dollar signs fill your head when you think of a home security system, here’s good news: New wireless systems

are effective and can cost as little as $200.

The systems cannot only help authorities catch a burglar (and keep your family safe), they can warn one not to enter in the first place. Professional burglars say they stay away from homes that are pro-tected by a system and move on to easier prey.

A Web search will turn up several wireless systems. The GE Secu-rity’s Simon XT is one of them. It costs about $200, more for the deluxe version, plus $30 a month for monitoring.

The system can track activity in 40 zones of the house, such as windows or doors equipped with sensors. Like many systems, the sensors can be programmed to alert a homeowner by cellphone

Home security systems can be wirelessProtect yourself and valuables

when one is triggered.

If you connect a digital video camera to the Simon XT, it can send images to you from the sensors. You could see who is by the front door or who is opening your liquor cabinet.

Any system should include sensors for all perimeter doors, doors leading to a garage or store room, and several motion detectors.

The system should also include outside and inside alarms to scare off intruders. And it should have a silent alarm code in case some-one forces the homeowners to shut down the alarm.

If a monitored system is not for you, consider Armor Concepts Door Jamb Armor. It reinforces all parts of the door that can break so it can’t be kicked down. A full set costs about $125.

AARPDriver Safety ProgramHoliday Lights Contest

by John Ulmer

Due to all the beautiful (and troublesome) snow conditions that

existed in late December, our Annual Holiday Decorations Contest was canceled.

While most of our neighbors were able to get their decorations up in time for judging; viewing and driving conditions made it difficult to get out and enjoy/vote on all homes. Rather than try and make awards without a significant number of votes it was decide to declare the snow the winner (everyone’s homes really looked festive covered in it) and try again next year. Happy New Year!

Lights, Camera, Action!!!Lacamas Shores Winter Film FestivalSaturday, March 7, 2009, 7:00 PMDeadline for film submissions is Saturday, February 28, 2009

The Lacamas Shores Film Festival will again be held at Camas Meadows to accommodate the growing group of film makers and fans. Whether a participant or

observer, this event is a lot of fun.

For potential film makers, this is your chance to explore your creative side and put that new (or closeted) video camera to use. Submissions run the gamut from slide shows to dramas to comedies. Imagine seeing your film on the big screen in front of an enthusiastic audience. Not sure how to shoot and edit your film? No problem. There are a number of people in our neighborhood who can help you get started.

Here are the rules: No Politics No Porn No “Birthin of no babies” And the film must be approximately five minutes or shorter! Finally and most important...films MUST be submitted by February 28

There is no entry fee and you really don’t have to worry about whether you are good or not. With only five minutes per video you can’t go wrong. People who attend have found the films very entertaining, and everyone walks away saying, “Next year, I’m going to enter!”

Previous entries have included films about the Lacamas Monster, Glamour Girl of Lacamas Shores, the adventures of Dick and Jane, documentaries on the Tappin Santas and Marili and a wonderful recap of the annual 4th of July parade.

For all attendees, Camas Meadows has graciously agreed to extend the Happy Hour bar menu for the evening so you won’t go hungry. We’ll mix and mingle starting at 7:00 PM and start showing the films at 8:00 PM.

Please contact Sarah Bang for submission guidelines, questions or if you would like assistance with your production. Sarah can be reached at 833.1353 or [email protected].

Just imagine your masterpiece on the big screen and get started today!

John Wiley did a very good thing dur-ing the recent snow storm. He has a big Hummer #1 with tire chains and offered rides to the snow bound neighbors. He took people grocery shopping and helped deliver and pick up neighbors at PDX airport. When he got over booked, his example brought other volunteers to aid the snow bound. He made us grateful and proud in a cold and isolated time. Thank you for making Lacamas Shores a better place.

The DEMISE of the printed VIEWSEditorial by Catherine Arnold

continued on Page 2

First thing every morning, I sneak outside in my pj’s to pick up the

newspapers, Oregonian and NY Times. Then I make a cup of coffee and spread the paper all over the counter to read. This is a ritual I will truly miss when the print media fully succumbs to the inevitable switch to digital world.

Our own neighborhood newsletter, VIEWS, is about the join the surge of declining newsprint. The reason for publishing the VIEWS online (www.lacamasshores.org) instead of print, is monetary. At the annual homeowner’s meeting we found out that for the first time we have a deficit due to rising costs and falling revenues. At this time 11% of Lacamas Shores homeowner’s have not paid their yearly assessment of $315, resulting in a loss of $17,859 for 2009. Another big expense will be the audit because we did not get the necessary votes to waive this unnecessary expense (see page 3). The budget for the VIEWS is $3,100 although the actual costs per year are $2,000 or less and that includes the cost of hosting the web site. Those costs can be cut further without any change in the VIEWS but online publishing means no printing expense and no mailing expense.

Lest anyone should think I am against technology, we have in our household 4 functioning computers, (that we use everyday), iPhones, and a Kindle. We also watch news and other business programs on TV. Switching the VIEWS to the web site does have advantages. It means we are not restricted in numbers of pages, we can use all the color we want and have lots of great pictures and graphics. Timelines will be easier not worrying about printing and mailing deadlines. It makes sense to

change to digital but are we really ready? Here are some points to consider.

1. We do not have emails for most people in our neighborhood and email addresses tend to change more frequently than home addresses making it difficult to keep up. Even if the VIEWS is posted on the web site, we need to have emails to let everyone know when it is posted or they may miss important information. Since the VIEWS is our primary means of communicating with all homeowners and relaying essential information, would it be necessary to snail mail everyone several times a year just to make sure they receive the information?

2. We have been told that a number of our neighbors do not have a computer/internet or they use dial-up service. Those without computers or internet will never get the

information unless they ask a neighbor or visit the local library. Dial-up is slow and may not handle large downloads, graphics, or web sites with videos, etc.

The Board of Directors will be discussing this topic at their next meeting on April 8th. In the meantime, the plan is to make sure everyone is aware of the change and has the ability to access the VIEWS online. We will be setting up a sign-up on www.lacamasshores.org for homeowners to register their email addresses so we can either email the VIEWS directly or notify everyone when it is posted online. We have people who would be happy to help neighbors who do not know how to use the internet or would like advice on equipment and services.

If you would like to attend the April 8th

Each year, the City of Camas requires that all residents have a certified irrigation backflow test. Washington State Law(WAC 246-290) requires annual testing

of backflow prevention assemblies. This testing is performed by a Washington State Certified Backflow Tester. The purpose of this test is to determine if your step septic system is performing correctly to avoid contamination of the water that flows into your home. The City of Camas sends out notices in April advising you of when to have your test done.

A reduced rate per house is available for Lacamas Shores homeowners from The Grounds Keeper. If you are interested in taking advantage of this group discount, contact them to schedule your test. The $5.00 off discount rate is available only if you call before April 20th. In order for the companies to offer this reduced rate, they need do a group of homes at a time. When scheduling your appointment, please state that you live in Lacamas Shores and would like to receive the group discount.

The Lacamas Shores HOA Audit Committee always does an annual independent audit of the financial statements.

The LS Board has unanimously voted to recommend we waive the outside audit and conduct an internal audit by our Auditing Com-mittee.

Lacamas Shores Homeowners Association 2008 Auditing Proxy Vote

At the annual homeowners meeting held at Camas Meadows Friday, the 20th of Feb 2009, we failed to collect enough votes

to waive the annual financial auditing of our association books. Per the CC&R’s we will be holding a second meeting for the pur-pose of voting on this matter, again. The meeting will take place on Friday, April 17th, 2009 at 7:00 PM. If you cannot attend this meeting and would like to vote, please fill out the attached Proxy

Important Notice Regarding The Audit Votesheet and give it to a neighbor or board member that will be atend-ing the meeting. If we fail to collect enough votes, we will be forced to hire an outside party to conduct the audit at a cost of $2000-$3000. There will not be another opportunity to cast your vote on this subject again this year. Your vote MUST be received no later than the meeting end to count!

Board members can be contacted online at www.lacamasshores.org/contacts or by phone listed on page 2.

Our HOA finances have two trends, declining income and ris-ing costs. Neighbors have lost their homes in the housing

recession leaving the HOA with unpaid dues and unpaid lot main-tenance fees. Interest income on our reserve fund will likely be declining, and we have gently rising maintenance costs for our common area and fixed assets.

Our maintenance staff does an excellent job keeping the common areas neat, clean and attractive. Because gasoline (needed to run the equipment) costs more, I see no way to economize here. The reserve fund has been set aside to cover capital asset repairs such as fixing the boat dock. Yet, the delinquencies in association dues are half the cost of totally replacing the whole dock. We have made our maintenance staff available over the years to owners of vacant lots so that the neighborhood looks neat and handsome. Yet, we are unable to recover the cost from foreclosed owners.

We will no doubt have to increase association dues. But before the higher 2010 funds come in we will have to conserve. How? Every-thing is on the table for review. Eliminating the printed VIEWS is

the current suggestion but it may not be worth it since the news-letter includes mail distribution of HOA notices that we would otherwise be obligated to deliver via separate mailings. The boat dock needs repair/replacing and it will be done with funds from the reserve fund.

Ideas? We attempted to hold a “Citizen’s Committee” meeting, an-nounced on the BackFence, that was requested at the annual HOA meeting. Only Kathi Rota, the VIEWS editor and I showed up. If there is still interest, we will schedule another time. Please email your ideas/suggestions to, [email protected].

Technology and YouPowermat wireless charging

Tired of the hassle of plugging in your mobile phone and other gadgets to charge them?

Companies and consumers have dreamed of a day when they could get rid of all those charging cords. Now, a new device shown at the Consumer Electronics show will soon accomplish that.

A new company called Powermat, Ltd., showed prototypes of how it will work. Just plop one or more gadgets on the charging surface and power starts flowing without plugging them into anything.

In its early stages of development, users have to buy special cases for their cellphones and other products that allow them to receive power from the charging pad.

Possibly out this fall, the charger will cost about $100. The attachments $39.

They save the energy normally lost with power cord wiring.

Swing keys------those t h o u g h t s , v i s i o n s

or sensations that you focus on just before a shot--have very short lifespans.

Golf expert John Paul Newport tells of golf pro Bert Yancy who had a swing key that lasted six months. It was a vision of a high-drawing seven-iron shot that hopped twice on the green and stopped near the pin. The key worked time after time. Then it went away and no one knows why.

Swing keys lasting that long are rare. Most golfers are lucky to go one round with an intact swing thought.

Bobby Jones wrote that the magic of a swing key was good for only a short time, then it becomes blurred as the golfer adds to it or takes something away, never returning to the key.

Sam Snead, says Newport, wrote that he tried to play in sort of a daze as far as his swing was concerned. He tried to settle on what the shot should look like and visualize it before hand, to sense how it would feel to make it happen, then let it happen.

One pro golf coach, quoted in The Wall Street Journal, says people who think about their swings are telling their brain that they don’t know how to swing. On the course, they should focus on a positive vision of the shot and swing away.

Another golf coach says the best swing keys, like, “swing easy,” are broad in nature. The most powerful swing thoughts are forward-oriented, like “swing through the ball.”

A third authority claims that human beings will lose focus after six to eight seconds at most. If you take longer than that, your swing key will disappear.

Dawdling over a shot can make your ‘swing key’ disappear

Easter Rabbit Trivia

The saying “mad as a March hare”refers to the wild antics of

male hares as they compete with other males in the spring. Mating behavior with females often looks like a crazy dance.

The saying “they multiply like rabbits” probably refers to the ability of hares and rabbits to conceive a second litter while still pregnant with the first. It’s not surprising that rabbits became fertility symbols. Rabbits, however, do not lay eggs, in case you wondered.

The idea of the egg-laying bunny came to America in the 18th century with German immigrants in the Pennsylvania Dutch area. They said that on Easter morning, good children found bunny eggs in their hats.

In Australia, there is a long-running campaign to replace the Easter bunny with the Easter bilby. The bilby, an endangered species, is a little smaller than a rabbit. It has a long nose and ears almost as big. A portion of the profit from selling chocolate bilbies goes to protection and research.

Mark your calendars for the Annual Lacamas Shores July 4th Celebration! This is our biggest neighborhood event of the

year and a great time to get acquainted with neighbors and make new friends. Participation is greatly encouraged.

The day starts bright and early with the kids Fun Run. This is followed by the amazing Lacamas Shores Parade with kids on decorated bikes, trikes and wagons, the LS Umbrella Drill Team and Camas fire truck and police boat as well as some famous or infamous celebrity look-alikes. Everyone is invited to participate and march in the parade but we also need viewers to cheer us on.

Next we all meet at the park for a great BBQ and homemade delights from you. This event could not happen without our

volunteers and current budget restraints necessitate the need for more help than before. The day is filled with fun family games and a bouncy house for kids.

If you are a boater, please be aware that the boat launch and canoe club will be closed on July 4th, for safety reasons. Many children are walking around during the event and we want to keep the area as safe as possible.

Listed below are some areas that will need volunteers at this year’s event. Please volunteer 30 minutes of your time to help out with our once a year neighborhood party. Contact Cindi Marrinan at 833.2209 or [email protected] and JOIN THE PARTY!

On February 22, the Lacamas Shores Cooking Club gathered

at Lynn & Neil Berglund’s home to cook Indian. The food of India reflects a perfect blend of various cultures and ages. Spices and aromatics are the very heart of Indian cooking and the menu for the cooking club

represented a variety of cooking techniques and flavors from all parts of the country. The evening started with Mango Margaritas and various appetizers. The menu included:

Vegetable Bhaji- deep fried vegetables similar to snacks provided by street vendors in India.

Rogan Josh - lamb simmered in a wonderful sauce of spices and yogurt.

Avial - A mixed vegetable curry with coconut and yogurt sauce.

Creamy Prawn Curry - a wonderful thick curry paste with cardamon and ginger flavors.

Fried Cauliflower - a very simple and delicious dish with mustard and fenugreek seeds.

Saag Roti- bread made with chapati flour and spinach.

Kulfi - a cardamon flavored frozen ice treat studded with pistachio nuts and almonds.

The Cooking Club & the food of INDIAThe group also made a Raita to cool the hotter dishes spicy burn and Mango Chutney for adding flavor. Everyone participated in the chopping and cooking and no one went away hungry. It was a great adventure and we all learned some new techniques and recipes. Thanks to Lynn & Neil for coordinating and hosting this event.

If you would like to join the Cooking Club in their next culinary escapade, go to www.lacamasshores.org/neighborhood and follow the links to sign up. You will automatically be notified when the next event is scheduled.

The Cooking Club does not have a regular meeting time and relies on the members to volunteer to host. All food and cooking ideas are welcome.

4th of July Parade – We Want You! Plans for the Lacamas

Shores 4th of July parade are underway and organizers are hoping you will be there! Last year’s parade included a fire truck, a real speed boat, motorcycles, several

“Movie Stars,” Elvis, specialty cars, Uncle Sam, the best looking kids on wheels and foot, and the award winning Umbrella Drill Team. We also had an F-15 fly over by the Oregon National Guard – No kidding!

We want this year’s parade to be even better. And it will be, if you are there! Your neighbors, Sarah and Steve Bang along with JP and Jeanne Brooks are parade co-chairs again this year. Contact Sarah at 833-1353 or [email protected] for details on the parade.

We Need You!Kids, Kids, Kids

Kids of all ages are encouraged to decorate their bikes, trikes, wagons, and scooters and participate in this fun Lacamas Shores family event. Dogs and puppies are encouraged to bring along their owners.

MotorcyclesWe are also looking for motorcycle riders to participate in the advance unit. Do you have a motorcycle that gathers dust most of the year? Well, here’s your chance to ride with the Lacamas Shores Motorcycle Posse. The motorcycle posse will continue its role as the lead unit of the parade. It is quite a sight (and sound) to see dozens of motorcycles heading up Lacamas Drive. We hope you’ll come out for it.

Antique and Specialty CarsHere’s your chance to dust off your show car and put into a parade WITHOUT leaving the neighborhood!

Golf CartsIf you have your own golf cart, please feel free to decorate it and bring it out to the parade.

Movie Stars and Mini Movie StarsMovie Star look-alikes we need you! Last year we had a half dozen “Movie Stars” riding in convertibles waving to the Lacamas Shores crowds – we know there will be more of you this year! Please pull on your wig, tiara, and boa and get your parade wave ready! If you have a convertible, even better!

If you have a little girl or boy who would like to be a Movie Star, that’s great! For safety sake, we’re asking that if your child wants to be a movie star in a convertible, that you or a relative ride with him/her. Call Sarah Bang for details.

Uncle Sams and Ms. LibertysLast year we had two (GORGEOUS) Uncle Sams….We would love more of the

same. If you would rather be Lady Liberty, we have a special spot for you too!

Summer is almost here! As a reminder, if you own a boat and use the Lacamas Shores boat launch, you are required to obtain

a free Lacamas Shores boat trailer sticker from Rob Bernardi (834.4361). The purpose of these stickers is to ensure that only residents park by the boat launch. There are only seven parking spaces and thus residents are given the convenience of parking down below. All guests, whether they have brought their own boats, or are visiting in cars, are not allowed to park by the boat launch.

You are more than welcome to bring a guest, and their boat, to visit you in our neighborhood. However, you must be out on the boat with your guest if you are using the LS boat launch. If you give or loan your boat sticker or gate key to non residents, you will lose your boat launch privileges. After guests have launched their boat, they must drive back up the hill to Lacamas Drive and park their vehicle and trailer on the street. On hot summer days when many residents want to use the boat launch and park their vehicles down below, trailers that do not have a LS sticker will be towed. Also, on busy days, boating residents would appreciate that no residents park their cars down below by the boat launch as space is severely limited. You are welcome to drop off anyone that cannot walk down the boat access road...we just ask that you then drive back up and park on Lacamas Drive.

Please use your boat responsibly and safely this summer and respect other boaters.

Lacamas Shores Boat Owner’s Responsibilities

Our neighborhood stays safe because we have neighbors that are aware and we use the online neighborhood watch system.

Once again, our neighborhood has become a target and we all need to step up our duties of being aware of our surroundings.

• 5/20/09 - one of our neighbors was burglarized from the back of their house between 12:30 -3:30 pm. A neighbor noted a suspicious car and is being reviewed by the police.

• 5/21/09 - reckless driver in a Black Honda with Oregon Plates 617CFD on Lacamas Drive

• 5/25/09 - two men ages 19-20 were arrested in the morning with possession of marijuana and other drugs on Lacamas Dr. They apparently parked their car on the side of the road after a night of partying to sleep. An aware neighbor called the police because it looked suspicious.

What can you do:1. Join the neighborhood online watch at lacamasshores.org/Watch/watch.html2. Turn your alarm on whenever you are not home...even during the day!3. Report suspicious cars and activities to the police immediately4. Keep neighbors updated to strange activities via the neighborhood watch.5. Call the police and ask them to take a look at your house to improve the security and lights.

Be Aware... You can make a difference

Most speed related fatalities are not on an interstate.

Exceeding the speed limit or driving too fast for road condi-tions is a factor in about one-third of all fatal vehicle crashes.

Though speeding is often thought of as an interstate highway prob-lem, only 14 percent of fatal speed-related crashes occur on the interstate system, according to the National Highway Traffic Ad-ministration.

Speeding kills more people on city streets, county roads and state highways. Here’s why:

* Speeding reduces the amount of time available to avoid a crash. * It increases the likelihood of crashing. * It increases the severity of a crash once it occurs.

Slow down and save a life.

Safety

Camas NewsOne Bin Recycling is ComingCamas will convert to one bin recycling in the near future. Last year pilot testing in selected areas showed improved recycling rates using this system. The new carts will allow residents to put most of their recyclable items in one container and the list of accepted items will expand. Glass will be recycled separately, in a small bin outside the cart, along with other items such as motor oil, aniti-freeze and batteries.

In the April/May issue of the VIEWS, we reported that

we would be going digital in the future. The VIEWS will be delivered to your email or you will be notified via email

that the current issue is posted on lacamasshores.org. At their April meeting, the Lacamas Shores Board voted to continue the printed VIEWS for as long as we need to get everyone on board. Our goal is to make sure everyone can access the VIEWS as this is our main approach for notifying residents of important association news as well as neighborhood happenings.

We are currently working on a way to get everyone’s email but as we all know emails change and we sometimes forget to notify those on our list. We currently put all back issues of the VIEWS online in the Resources section but without notification, most people would not think to look and then would be upset about not being notified. If you have a suggestion or solution to this dilemma please contact [email protected].

There are a couple of options for those that require printed versions of the VIEWS after the change. The Camas Library allows free printing of up to 10 pages. Also, thanks to a LS resident, Unitus Community Credit Union has offered to assist its Lacamas Shores members with computer services to access and print the bi-monthly Lacamas Views. In addition and as a service to the community, they are offering the same service to all residents of Lacamas Shores who don’t have access to a computer. The Vancouver branch is located on 192nd, next to Sonic Drive In and JC Penney. The branch management will also keep printed copies on hand for those who would like to just drop in and pick up a copy.

At this time, we plan to continue the printed VIEWS through November which is only two more issues. Hopefully, we will be ready for a digital VIEWS by then.

Update on the VIEWS ...When to go Digital

Enthusiasm is the greatest asset in the world. It beats money and power and influence.

As Reported by RMLS Portland 5/14/2009

Luscious Lemon, Peppermint Patty, Root Beer Float, Mounds, New York Cheesecake, Yellow Cake Batter, Strawberry

Banana, and Peanut Butter are just some of the flavors that rotate at the new Yocream Frozen Yogurt shop near Ikea in Cascade Station. We visited recently and had a most delightful experience. They have a new self-serve concept that is great fun for all-aged members of the family. You take a cup and pull as much as you want from 10 different flavors of frozen yogurt in the freezer machines. Then you add any combination from 36 different toppings to make your own creation. It can be tiny or super-custom, depending on your appetite. Then you pay by the ounce. Ours came out around $4-$5 each, not bad. And of course they will make smoothies, shakes, or fresh baked waffles for you, and it is available for take home.

Yocream just opened this one of a kind showroom for the products they make at their factory which is also nearby the Portland

Airport. The people are super friendly, they keep it really clean, and now there are tables and umbrellas just outside. Plus the live probiotics in the yogurt are good for you. But be forewarned,

we hear that some people in our neighborhood have become “addicted” and are going several times a week.

We also learned that all of their cups, spoons, and other serveware (even the trash bags) are biodegradeable. On our first visit we got a tour of the back room by our neighbor, Terry Oftedal, who works at Yocream and led the team that designed the show room and developed the menus. He showed us one of their green-environmental concepts, a system that saves energy by circulating glycol to evacuate heat to the roof from the 8 different types of freeze-down machines.

They are open 7 days a week and you can bookmark their web site at www.yocreamfrozenyogurt.com to see their current hours. Summer hours start June 1, and they will start staying open on Fri. and Sat. until midnight.

Spring is here and so is garage sale fever! The Lacamas

Shores annual garage sale will be held on June 13th this year to avoid conflict with the Portland Rose Festival.

For those of you who haven’t witnessed this annual event, be pre-pared for a lot of car and pedestrian traffic. To participate all you need to do is open your garage door at 8:00 AM.

Some neighbors choose to have a preview sale for homeowners on Friday evening starting at 5:00 PM. Contact Kathi Rota, 772.4663 or email [email protected], if you have questions.

the boat house at 7 PM for appetizers and beverages (please bring both to share). We’ll start the show at dusk.

You will see a variety of short (five minute) films including one of the 2009 4th of July Parade as well as other short films produced by Lacamas Shores residents. It’s a fun evening and a great chance to meet your neighbors. If you have a five minute vacation video or short film you’d like to share (don’t be shy) please contact Sarah Bang at 833.1353 or [email protected] be sure to bring along a chair and a blanket (it does get cool). The West Columbia Gorge Humane Society is having a fundraiser at the Heathman Hotel in Vancouver on August

29th. Please save that date and support them.

This local humane society rescues, protects and comforts our pets if they are lost. It is a no kill shelter and because of this they have been inundated with many cats and some dogs by homeowners whose homes have been foreclosed. Many of the cats and dogs are house pets and very lovable, yet lonely and abandoned, and need TLC.

Their budget does not allow a full time person, therefore, the hours are from 9 AM to noon, 7 days a week. A message machine operates after hours providing additionsl information.

“free” power washing of their driveways/sidewalks for a $200 donation to “Credit Unions For Kids”.

Meet the Neighbors on July 4thby Cindi Marrinan

Looking for a way to meet your neighbors? Well, here is the solution! Come join us for a fun filled day on July 4th. Just

bring a salad/side dish and dessert to share. Burgers, Hot Dogs and drinks will be provided. Also bring your own chairs and a shade tent if desired.

During this event, the Boat Dock will be closed to protect the safety of all. Also, Lacamas Drive will be closed from Barlow Drive to the East Entrance from 10:30 -11:30AM for the parade. We don’t want any injuries during the parade. If you have guests coming for the event, please make sure they are aware of these

changes. Cones will be set up to block the road. If you see the cones, do not drive around them. Thank you.

This year we need volunteers more than ever and there is something for everyone to do. Be a part of your community and offer a hand. It IS a great way to meet your neighbors.

Patriotic Picnic was Sizzling!by Cindi Marrinan

Can you say “HOT”! The parade, pic-nic and weather were all Smokin’ Hot

this year. I hope you will all agree that this event is the best way to get to know your, neighbors and share a few laughs to-gether. Many met new neighbors as they tried to find shade to eat their meals. Oth-ers gathered around the mister to try to cool off.

The 4th of July event is full of so many fun and exciting events. Hopefully, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Here is a quick recap of our day:

The day started with the 1 mile kid’s spar-kler run at 9:00 AM.

Then everyone hurried to attend or watch the parade. This year the F-15 fighter jets kicked off the parade by swooping down Lacamas Drive. They were so low that it felt like you could reach up and touch them. A special thanks goes out to JP Brooks for organizing the planes. That fly over makes quite a thrilling statement for our event.

Once again, Sarah Bang organized a magi-cal parade. Motorcycles, fire truck, con-vertibles with celebrities, kids on bikes and the infamous Lacamas Shores Umbrella Drill Team. The parade ended with pop-sicles by the Boat Dock Gate entrance.

Music was in the air this year as everyone came down to the park for the picnic. A DJ kept our toes tapping as the kids played in the bouncy house, bouncy slide and climbed the rock wall. The snow cones also helped to cool everyone down.

The food was amazing. We have some amazing chefs in our neighborhood. It was a lot of fun trying all the special pot luck dishes that were prepared. A Special thanks goes out to Art McCallum, owner of the Fisher’s Landing and Camas Shell Sta-

tions. Art donated all the ice for the picnic and shopped for the food items. Also a BIG thank you goes out to our cooks. Thank you for enduring the heat to cook our burgers and dogs.

Many competed for the hula hoop and limbo challenges. This year, every contestant received a savings certifi-cate to visit Yo Cream in the Cascade Station by the air-port. These $ off certificates were donated by Terry Oftedal. Thank you Terry for putting smiles on so many little faces! If you would like to do-nate items for next year’s contests, please contact Cindi Marrinan at 833.2209.

Finally, the days events were wrapped

up with an egg run and balloon toss. Many thanks to all the volunteers that helped to make the event so much fun. Lacamas Shores strives to have friendly and fun

We All Can Have Fun with These Boat Dock Usage Tips

Wouldn’t you agree that the Summers in the Pacific North West are just the best? Boating becomes a favorite sport

in the Summer and we are fortunate to have our own access to Lacamas Lake. With this access comes some responsibilities that each of us make so that we all can enjoy the benefits.

Each homeowner was sent a gate key to access the private en-trance. Please use this key for your own personal use and always stay with your guest if you bring them into the common areas. Gate keys will be deleted from the system if misuse of the card has been determined.

If you have a boat trailer, please obtain a Lacamas Shores trailer sticker so that your trailer does not get towed. These stickers are given to Lacamas Shores homeowners who request them and only one per home is issued.

Since there are only about seven parking spaces down in the boat-ing area, please save the trailer spaces for cars with trailers. If you bring guests, please ask them to park on Lacamas Dr. even if they

have a boat trailer.

The parking spaces fill up fast in the common area on hot sum-mer days. Many homeowners get upset if the spaces are taken up by non-homeowners. If you see a boat trailer without a Lacamas Shores Sticker, jot down the license plate number and email it to [email protected]. Also there is a black mailbox on the garage side of the maintenance shed. There are pre-printed letters in the box that state that a Lacamas Shores parking sticker is need-ed. Put one of the letters under the window wiper of the car to let the owner know that they cannot park down in the common area until they get a parking sticker. If a trailer is found to be a continu-ous offender, a towing company will be called to have a “boot” put on their trailer and a fine will be assessed.

Lacamas Shores has 253 homes/lots with a very small area in the boat launch forhandling boats. As you can see we can barely fit all our homeowners in the 7 parking spaces in the boating area. Your assistance is greatly appreciated to help us all have a fun Summer.

Nap in the hammock, have a barbecue or dive into the city swimming pool. Whatever you do,

you are celebrating the last weekend of summer, though the calendar might dis-agree.

This year marks the 115th celebration of Labor Day. After much ado for many years, President Grover Cleveland signed the Labor Day proclamation in 1894. It is the only holiday in the year that does not focus on an individual or a national event.

The path to this proclamation was not a simple one. Rather, it was marked with hard work and risk by labor leaders and many thousands of workers.

While the work toward getting a labor day began years before, it

Labor Day: Summer’s last fling has a serious pastwas a celebration by the Knights of Labor in 1882 that brought the

cause to the public’s attention.

More than 20,000 demonstrators paraded in New York City. Many carried signs that said “8 hours for work, 8 hours for rest, 8 hours for recreation.” In addition to a day of rest for workers, they pa-raded for better working conditions.

The Labor Day movement spread from East to West over the following years. In 1887, Colorado was the first state to declare Labor Day a state holiday. By 1893, more than half of the states had an official Labor Day.

Then, a bill for a national Labor Day was intro-duced in Congress. When President Cleveland

signed it on June 28, 1894, he thought it was a good political move. But he was not reelected.

Do you ever get nostalgic for outdoor movies? Are you looking for a fun

neighborhood event that is totally different from your standard cocktail party? Do you enjoy making or watching funny and interesting home movies?

If you answered yes to any one of these questions, then please join us for the 2009 Lacamas Shores Summer Film Festival, Saturday August 29 at the picnic area at the Lake. We will meet at the boat house at 7 PM for appetizers and beverages (please bring both to share). We’ll start the show at dusk.

You will see a variety of short (five minute) films including one of the 2009 4th of July Parade (the kids are so darn cute!) as well as other short films produced by Lacamas Shores residents. It’s a fun evening and a great chance to meet your neighbors. If you have a five minute vacation video or short film you’d like to share (don’t be shy) please contact Sarah Bang at 833.1353 or [email protected] .

For 25 years I’ve always had some sort of external temperature monitor at my home. The first one was just a mercury

thermometer outside in the shade that you could see from inside the house. As technology developed it became possible to get a digital readout inside the house linked to an external sensor with a wire that went through a window (can now see it at night without a flashlight!). Then came wireless technology, which allowed greater separation of the sensor and readout, making things more convenient. I guess the move from simply temperature to other weather measurements can be put down to typical male “gadget fixation” :) In any case, the advance of electronics has led to some pretty sophisticated equipment available to “prosumers” these days. It is only a short step to hook this all to a computer (my house has 8 of them, to give you an idea) to arrive at a real time weather monitoring system. Add the internet and you can check in from anywhere.

My current equipment is a Vantage Pro2 by Davis Instruments. Davis’ products are considered the upper end of what is available to consumers, and is just a step below what is used by government weather stations. Here is the link to my product on the Davis web site: www.davisnet.com/weather/products/weather_product.asp?pnum=06153

The Vantage Pro2 is called an ISS (“integrated sensor suite”), and contains the instruments for temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, rain gauge, and anemometer (wind speed) input. The actual anemometer is connected by a wire, since one wants to get it as high as possible to clear obstructions. The temperature measurement is housed in a radiation shield with a fan that runs from a solar panel. The idea behind this is to keep the ambient temperature readings free from the influence of direct sun light. The ISS is powered by a second solar panel, with a back up lithium battery for periods where there is insufficient sunlight (not a problem around here of course--ha ha).

The system works automatically. There is no “on/off” switch. As long as there is power it takes several measurements a second and transmits them. On the other end of the transmission is the console receiver I have in my office about 200 feet away which is the displaying the output of the outdoor sensors. It is plugged into an electrical outlet, but it has battery backup sufficient to run for a month if it loses power. It keeps a daily, monthly, and yearly history off all the readings it has seen and has a graphing function for all of this.

The system could be complete with this, but I have gone one additional step. Davis has a service it offers where the output of this particular receiver type can be transmitted over the internet. My Davis console is set up as independent device on my home computer network with its’ own IP address and independent connection to the internet. To make this work, my internet connection must be active, but I have broadband internet and in general, unless Comcast goes down, my connection will be working.

To access the information from my setup on the Davis server one simply goes to the following URL: www.weatherlink.com/user/dougnel

The information on this page is updated once a minute (the time of the current update is shown at the bottom of the page). If for some reason the information is not current (the internet is down, for example) the line at the bottom will turn red and will give the date and time of the last update. If you click on the “Summary” link at the top of the page a new page opens with some more information available. Another link on the top of the Davis page is “Map”. Here you will see a map of the world where systems similar to mine are located and which are participating in the Davis program. For example, if you zoom in on Southwest Washington you will see my system off Lacamas Lake, but there are also systems in Brush Prairie and Vancouver.

So, from the standpoint of the residents of Lacamas Shores, there is available over the internet for free real time weather information that is very local (not the airport). If it is raining hard and you wonder just how hard, look it up. Or if you wonder what the low was last night, it is available. The information is quite accurate (the system has been calibrated), but the wind speed is, of course, affected by where the anemometer is located. To get maximum accuracy for that I would need to put it on top of my house, and I didn’t want to go that far...........

OctOber/NOvember 2009

It may be October but November will be here before you know it. That means

Thanksgiving and a time to gather with family and friends and....eat a lot! You know how to cook your turkey and all the side dishes but you may want to branch out a little this year. For your consideration, we present some trivia and some ideas to make your Thanksgiving truly memorable.

While the first Thanksgiving was held in 1621, it would take more than 150 years before all 13 colonies celebrated Thanksgiving at once, in October 1777. In 1789, George Washington hailed the holiday, while President Thomas Jefferson scoffed at the notion, calling Thanksgiving “the most ridiculous idea” ever conceived. For his part, Benjamin Franklin had such an affinity for turkey that he lobbied to make it the national bird (to no avail).

Looking for something different to serve this year? Thanks to the culinary genius of Paul Prudhome (Louisiana chef) more people are ignoring the Butterballs for a Turducken. All you have to do is debone a turkey and duck and a chicken, then stuff them all together (with stuffing between each)and roast until they are all meltingly tender. If you don’t have the time to do it yourself, you can pick one up in the freezer section of your local market or order online. If thats not for you, how about a tofurkey (that’s tofu shaped like a turkey but tasting like tofu) or you can deep fry your turkey if your into living dangerously.

The White House tradition of pardoning a turkey before Thanksgiving began in 1947, when President Harry Truman pardoned the first lucky bird. Others say President Abraham Lincoln was the first when he pardoned his son Tad’s pet turkey.

Thanksgiving was initially meant to be a fast, not a feast. The devout settlers at Plymouth Rock mostly recognized “giving of thanks” in the form of prayer and abstaining from food. But the Wampanoag Indians, who joined the pilgrims for their 3-day celebration, contributed their own harvest traditions — dancing, games and feasting — from their ancient festival, Nickommoh, meaning “to give away” or “exchange.”

And last but not least...in 1953, someone at Swanson severely overestimated the amount of turkey Americans would consume that Thanksgiving. With 260 tons of frozen birds to get rid of, a company salesman named Gerry Thomas ordered 5,000 aluminum trays, recruited an assembly line of women armed with spatulas and ice-cream scoops and began

Turkeys...Pardons....and TV Dinners

creating mini-feasts of turkey, corn-bread dressing, peas and sweet potatoes — creating the first-ever TV dinner. Thomas later said he got the idea from neatly packaged airplane food....

Now that’s the Thanksgiving I remember.

We work hard to keep the common areas looking good

for your use and we take pride in our work. Hopefully you appreciate our work. We have a special request to ask of you and we hope you will understand our concern.

Lately, when we have been cutting the empty lots and common areas,

we have noticed an increase in dog poop. It is just not a pleasant experience to have dog poop fly up into our faces when cutting the grass. This is not something that we signed up for. Bet you wouldn’t like a job like that either.

Did you know that it is a county ordinance that you pick up after your dog? Our wish is that we can maintain the lots and common areas without getting “you know what” on our face. Will you take just a minute extra and pick up after your pets? Pet stores sell affordable waste pick up bags or you can use a plastic grocery bag. It just takes a minute and it helps to make Lacamas Shores a nicer place for everyone. Thank you for your consideration.

Editors Note: Pet waste left on the ground very likely will get washed into storm drains, which lead directly to our lakes, streams and wetlands. This waste is essentially raw sewage, and carries harmful bacteria which can affect the health of aquatic wildlife, as well as ourselves and our children. Clark County has over 103,000 dogs and their poop adds up to over 6,000 tons per year! It is up to every individual dog owner to take responsibility for your dog’s doodoo.

Scoop it, bag it, toss it in the garbage!!

A message from Lacamas Shores Maintenance Staff The Lacamas Shores HOA directors are elected to represent and

protect the best interests of the association. One of the most important tasks is to sustain the value of the jointly owned property, principally the common areas, the boat dock, the soccer field and the entrance flower beds. The board also enforces the CC&Rs. But building the social and civic well-being of a neighborhood is as important as maintaining the common areas or enforcing rules.

Any homeowner may be elected to the 7 member board of directors. We hold our elections at the annual home owner’s meeting in February. Each director serves a two year term and the board chooses who be the officers each year after the election.

The board of directors tries to foster a sense of caring, shared responsibility, and volunteerism within the neighborhood. By emphasizing our shared community interests, board members go beyond the legal nature of the governing documents. Our directors strive to set a tone of collaboration among HOA members resulting in fewer violations, quicker resolutions and a lively, friendly neighborhood.

To recap a board member’s role:• Enforce the ruling documents (bylaws and CC&Rs)• Establish sound fiscal policies and maintain accurate records• Develop a workable budget• Monitor our reserve funds• Collect assessments• Authorize legal action against owners who do not comply

with the rules• Review review and discuss before making policy or

enforcing rules• Inform members of important board decisions and

transactions• Attend and participate at meetings

Serving as a board member is a valuable and a rewarding experience that provides the opportunity to meet and help your neighbors while protecting and enhancing their assets. It is serious business but but a task worth doing for those who can step outside themselves and serve their community. It can also be a lot of fun. We have a great community.

The role of your HOA boardby Richard Arnold

Everyone wants to have a safe and happy Halloween for themselves, their guests and their children. Using safety

tips and common sense can help you make the most of your Halloween season and make it as enjoyable for your kids as it is for you!

Plan costumes that are bright and reflective. Make sure that shoes fit well and that costumes are short enough to prevent tripping, entanglement or contact with flame. purchase only those with a label indicating they are flame resistant.

Consider adding reflective tape or striping to costumes and trick-or-treat bags for greater visibility.

Obtain flashlights with fresh batteries for all children and their escorts.

Teach children their home phone number and to how call 9-1-1 (or their local emergency number) if they have an emergency or become lost. Remind them that 9-1-1 can be dialed free from any phone.

Openly discuss appropriate and inappropriate behavior at Halloween time.

Consider purchasing individually packaged healthy food alternatives (or safe non-food treats) for those who visit your home.

Take extra effort to eliminate tripping hazards on your porch and walkway. Check around your property for flower pots, low tree limbs, support wires or garden hoses that may prove hazardous to young children rushing from house to house.

The new Google Voice product gathers all your calls from your various phones, which can then be accessed from your home,

office or cell phone.

If you ignore a voice mail, it is transcribed and sent to you as an e-mail. And Voice lets you make free conference calls and cheap international calls.

To get started with the service, you set up a personal Voice Web page, where you link your home, work and cell numbers with a new number given to you by Voice.

The new number link is used because Voice is still somewhat under development. Before long, they will have number portabil-ity so you won’t have to use the number link they give you to start.

When one of the designated phones rings, you can pick up which-ever phone is most convenient. You can press * to make all the phones ring again.

You can sign up for the free service at google.com/voice. Right now, there is a waiting list.

Wouldn’t it be nice to be visited each day by cheerful, chirping birds that you could

watch from your window. They’re pretty and fun to watch, but in colder climes their natural food is scarce. Many die of starvation, especially if there is snow on the ground. Naturalists at Wild Birds Unlimited say feeders increase the survival rate of birds by 50 percent.

Now is a good time to create your own bird haven. Supplying proper food, water and shelter is the key. Birds must build up before the coldest part of winter. They need body fat to keep them warm on cold nights. And they need the protective cover of trees and shrubs about 15 feet from feeders.

A mix of black oil sunflower seed, white millet and safflower

Many die over winterHow to invite the birds to your house

seeds will attract most local birds. They will not eat mixes that have a lot of cracked corn, wheat and milo seed.

Hopper-type feeders with landing platforms work well and allow some seed to fall for ground-feeding birds. But don’t scatter a lot of seed on the ground. Either squirrels will eat it or it will rot.

Feeders can be made from wood or plastic. Ground feeders with roofs and open sides keep seed dry. Squirrels often get to the seed, but they are hungry too.

The Audubon Society recommends putting seed out early in the morning and topping it off at night.

Feed the birds regularly and watch the show!

The Lacamas Shares Film Festival at the Lake -- Oh What a Night!

The Lacamas Shores Summer Film Festival was a big hit. On August 29, more than 65 of your neighbors and their friends

gathered at the pic-nic area to watch a new crop of short films by Lacamas Shores residents

Among the high-lights were movies from some veteran film makers. Dick and Jane Smith delighted every-one with a take off on American Idol. Steve Marrinan reprised his role as Lacamas Lawman with his new sidekick Erin. Cindi Marri-nan produced an Elvis short that had everyone wanting to dance. Catherine Arnold delivered another blockbuster with “Beam Me to the Potty” starring almost 20 Lacamas Shores residents. And Sarah Bang showed just how bad a Bad Auntie can be.

The audience saw more than a dozen short (five minute) films pro-duced by Lacamas Shores residents. It was a fun evening and a

great chance to meet neighbors.Be sure to mark your calendars for Friday, March 5, 2010 for the winter Film Festival. You can simply attend as part of the audi-ence, or submit your OWN production. It’s never too early to start your movie! If you have a short film you’d like to share (don’t be shy) please contact Sarah Bang at 833.1353 or [email protected].

If you’d like to make a movie to show at the Festival, here are the rules:1. It must be five minutes or less2. No politics, please3. No porn, sorry4. No birthin’ of no babies5. Please submit the film to Sarah Bang in MPEG -2 format by

February 28 – email her at [email protected] if you have questions.

6. If you would like help making your movie, please contact Sarah Bang or Catherine Arnold ([email protected]). They would love to help you discover your inner Spielberg.

If you see some of us out filming in the neighborhood, don’t forget to smile. You could be a star in the next Lacamas Shores movie!

Jane Smith enjoys the Film Festival on her Birthday!

The 3rd Annual Christmas Cart Parade is tentatively planned for December 6th and your invited to participate. To make

sure there are enough golf carts for all participants, please contact Steve Bang at [email protected] or Sarah Bang at [email protected].

We will meet at Camas Meadows around 4:00 PM to decorate and get ready for the magic. At approximately 5:30 PM the carts take off for the streets of Lacamas Shores where we play music and exhibit our amazing cart decorating skills. We will also be picking up toys which will be given to the Inter-Faith Treasure House in Camas for distribution to kids. You may leave the toys on your doorstep but if your home, please come out and cheer us on. There are always some surprises and a lot of fun. Last year Logan Brooks and Max Urbanek played Christmas songs on their Alto Saxophones for this golf cart parade. Here’s what you need to participate:

* Warm clothes and mittens – we’re not kidding.

* Large Flashlight

* An inverter that can be attached to a golf cart battery. NOT the cigarette lighter kind!

* LED lights and figures. NOT regular lights as they draw too much power and you’ll go dark as you climb the hills to the cul de sacs.

* Other glittery decorations

* Zip ties,bungee cords, and/or clips

* Hand bell or jingle bells

WE”LL SEE YOU THERE!!

Join the 3rd Annual Christmas Cart Parade!!

One of the largest Pacific Northwest ski areas prom-ises to tell the truth about weather conditions in

the 2009-2010 season.

Mt. Bachelor resort, in Oregon’s Cascade Range, says it hopes its new policy will distinguish it in an industry that, like many others, has been hit by the recession. The ski industry as a whole has been often maligned for overstating conditions, say the editors of Fortune.

The ski area will rank conditions between 0 and 3; 3 means nice and 0 means nasty. Another scale, from 1 to 3, will be based on how many lifts are open.

The total number of points, between 1 and 6, will de-termine lift-ticket prices, which will range from $49 to $69, except during holidays.

Mt. Bachelor has every type of terrain. The runs fol-low the natural contours of the mountain with a total of 3,683 skiable acres to play around in. There is cross-country action too.

For snowboarders, all 71 runs are open to both skiers and snowboarders along with 3three terrain parks and a superpipe. Snowboard and boot rental facilities are available, and clinics are offered daily.

The resort has been in existence for more than 50 years. It predicts 195 skiable days this season. Its average-year snowfall is 370 inches.

There is no lodging at Mt. Bachelor, but the resort is only minutes from Bend, Redmond and Redmond air-port.

Ski resort will charge according to weather
