Welcome to Our New Look Newsletter
During our Family Arts Night last term, some of our
senior students conducted a survey in regard to how
the school communicates with parents. One aspect of
the survey was about the Newsletter. From the
feedback received, we are planning to produce a
weekly newsletter which will be distributed in paper
format to families on Thursday afternoons. The
newsletter will also be available on COMPASS and the
school website. We would welcome your thoughts on
the new layout and any ideas as to how we could better
communicate with you.
It's Our Birthday
Although classes began two years earlier, Gladstone
Views Primary School officially opened on April 23rd
1976. Last year, students
suggested that we celebrate
the school’s birthday – so we
are!
Our ‘party day’ this year will be
on Wednesday 26th April.
Activities on the day will
include a;
• bubble machine in the
playground
• whole school treasure hunt
• special lunch pack from the canteen (order forms
were sent home with students 19 April).
In SCART, over the next few weeks, all children will
have the opportunity to contribute to a whole school
piece of art using handprints. This will involve your
child having water based exterior wall paint on their
hand for a short period of time.
Attitudes to School Survey
The Department of Education and Training provide an
opportunity for students to provide feedback on their
learning and experiences at school. This year all
students in years 4, 5 and 6 will participate in the
survey at school during May.
The survey will be conducted online this year. Students
will be given a unique login. Privacy and confidentiality
of each student’s responses will be protected at all
times. No identifiable personal data is included in the
survey response file.
Results from the survey, which are returned to the
school during term three, are used to plan programs
and improve aspects of school life. The data provided
to the school is grouped – individual responses are not
included.
The survey is not a test and your child has the right to
withdraw from the survey at any point, before, during
or after completion. Please see your child’s class
teacher if you would like further information or have
concerns.
Read Write Inc. in Prep
Our Prep students have started a new literacy program
– Read Write Inc. This program brings together many
aspects of reading and writing
traditionally taught in schools in one
neat package. This week, students
have looked at the letters and
sounds for ‘m, a, s and d’. An
important part of the program is
linking sounds with hand actions.
ANZAC Service – Please join us on Friday at 2.30pm
Our school ANZAC
service will be on
Friday this week as
part of our regular
school assembly.
Family members
are welcome to join
us in recognising this important occasion.
The School Captains will be representing Gladstone
Views Primary School at a service at the Shrine of
Remembrance on Friday morning. This will be the
Captains first official role for the year and we look
forward to seeing them represent the school with
pride.
Proudly Flying the Australian Flag
Student leaders, Faith, Zander,
Antonio and Ben, are currently
learning to raise and lower the flag
under the guidance of Mr Grinter. The students will be
responsible for raising and lowering the flag each day,
and will be learning the protocols associated with the
flag.
Did you know?
When the Australian Flag becomes tattered, it can not
be thrown away. Instead, you need to respectfully cut
the flag into unrecognisable pieces and dispose of the
pieces.
Year 5/6 Camp
Ferry rides, giants swings, beach walks and terrific
food! Our year five and six students certainly had a
wonderful time at camp last term.
Organising a camp takes a lot of thought and time.
While many aspects such as bookings and programs are
obvious, a lot of work goes on behind the scenes to
ensure student safety. I would like to thank Scott
Woolcock for his work to ensure that every
requirement was completed.
Also huge thankyou to the parents and staff who
attended the camp to ensure that all students had an
exciting time and remained safe. Sometimes parents
expect that teachers are paid over-time to attend
camps. This is certainly not the case. The staff give up
their personal lives for the duration of the camp (and
usually the next day or so as they recover!).
Poppy Appeal – ANZAC Day Badges for Sale
We once again have ANZAC Day badges, key rings and
bracelets for sale. The Junior School Council will be
coming past all classrooms tomorrow Friday 21st April
selling the items. They are also available for purchase
from the office. Items priced between $1 - $4.
GVPS Birthday Lunch Pack – ORDER BY FRIDAY
Please make sure birthday lunch pack forms and
payment are returned by the end of school tomorrow,
Friday 21st April. A reminder that there will be no
canteen orders on this day. Are you available to help
cook on the day? Terrific! Please register your interest
in assisting at the office. A valid Working with Children
Check is required. Thank you!
