Surat ‘Abasa Review Study all that’s below, and get 100%!!!

Comment on showing respect to the Prophet (s)- Extremes and middle ground. Describe the situation for which the beginning Ayat of the Surah were revealed.

Explain the positions of (a) the blind man, (b) the Messenger (s), and (c) the Makkan elite.

Explain how the Prophet’s (s) mistake was a very minor one. Why did Allah reprimand the Messenger (s), even though his mistake was

minor? How does Allah honor companions in this Surah? What does the verb “’Abasa” mean? (Provide all connotations learned.) Why may have Allah mentioned the Prophet’s (s) frowning in 3rd person, “He

frowned and turned away,” instead of addressing him directly and saying, “You frowned and turned away”?

Allah said that the blind man “jaa’a’”. What does this verb, which means “came”, connote?

Compare Abdullah ibn Umm Maktum’s attitude to that of the Qurayshi elite referencing the Ayat 1-10.

What are the meanings of dhikraa and tadhkirah? Explain the connotations of each.

How does Allah show concern for the Prophet’s dignity in Ayat 5-7?

You are running for school president. You have a lot of ambitions and hopes of making positive changes that will enhance academics and develop student character at the school. There are a group of very influential popular kids, who do not really share your same values but who, if on your side, can easily win you the vote of the masses. On the other hand, there are many individual hard-working students who share your dreams and principles and who really want what’s best for the school but who are in need of direction. They are viewed as the “nerds” and “geeks” and do not have much social influence and associating with them would turn all the popular students against you. Based on what you learned from this Surah, spending time with which set of students would most likely be your wisest time investment?

How is the Qur’an a “Reminder” for someone hearing it for the first time? How does Allah honor the Message in ayat 11-16? To what does the term “Suhufin Mukarramah” (honored scrolls) refer? Support

your interpretation. Translate the sentence “Ma akfarah” in two different ways. (Ayah 17) How does Allah put man in his rightful place in Ayat 17-23? (Offers reality

check) What does the word “lammaa/yet” in Ayah 23 indicate? Ayat 24-32 then ask mankind to reflect on one of their greatest blessings, which

is food. Mention Allah’s favors upon mankind with regards to food referencing the Ayat.

What scene is being described in Ayat 33-42? How does Allah describe it here? How will each group of people appear?

Examine of the root (s-f-r) and expound on how the faces of the righteous will be “musfirah” in the Hereafter.

Examine the root (f-j-r) and explain why the disbelievers are referred to as “fajarah”.

What is a possible significance of using the word “mar’” instead of the word “rajul” in Ayah 33?

Relate the beginning and end of the Surah to each other. Mention three lessons you learned from the Surah.

BONUS: Why is fruit called fakihah in Arabic?

Guidance: A Gift from Allah

Indeed, [O Muhammad], you do not guide whom you like, but Allah guides whom He wills. And He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided. (al-Qasas 56)

Whoever Allah guides - he is the [rightly] guided; and whoever He sends astray - it

is those who are the losers. (al-A’raf 178)

So whoever Allah wants to guide - He expands his breast to [contain] Islam; and

whoever He wants to misguide - He makes his breast tight and constricted as

though he were climbing into the sky. Thus does Allah place defilement upon

those who do not believe. (al-An’am 125)

Principle

Do not formulate a conclusion based on an isolated text.

Those are the ones whom Allah has guided, so from their guidance take an

example. Say, "I ask of you for this message no payment. It is not but a reminder

for the worlds." (al-An’am 9)وكل شيء أحصيناه كتابا

But all things We have enumerated in writing. (al-Naba’ 29)

guided us to this; and we would never have been guided if Allah had not guided us. (al-A’raf 43)

Say, "Are there of your 'partners' any who guides to the truth?" Say, "Allah guides

to the truth. So is He who guides to the truth more worthy to be followed or he who guides not unless he is guided? Then what is [wrong] with you - how do you

judge?" (Younus 35)

Misguidance: From Allah?

Allah keeps firm those who believe, with the firm word, in worldly life and in the

Hereafter. And Allah sends astray the wrongdoers. And Allah does what He wills. (Ibrahim 27)

And whoever Allah leaves astray - for him there is no guide. And whoever Allah guides - for him there is no misleader. Is not Allah Exalted in Might and Owner of

Retribution? (al-Zumar 36-37)

So whoever is guided - it is for [the benefit of] his soul; and whoever goes astray only goes astray to its detriment. (al-Zumar 41)

And when they deviated, Allah caused their hearts to deviate. And Allah does not guide the defiantly disobedient people. (al-Saff 5)

Had Allah Willed…

guided you all." (al-An’am 149)

And had your Lord willed, those on earth would have believed - all of them entirely. Then, [O Muhammad], would you compel the people in order that they

become believers? (Younus 99)

And if Allah had willed, He could have made you [of] one religion, but He causes to stray whom He wills and guides whom He wills. And you will surely be

questioned about what you used to do. (al-Nahl 93)

Does Allah Will for People to be Misguided?

There has come to you enlightenment from your Lord. So whoever will see does so for [the benefit of] his soul, and whoever is blind [does harm] against it. And [say],

O you who have believed, upon you is [responsibility for] yourselves. Those who have gone astray will not harm you when you have been guided. To Allah is you

But those who deny Our verses are deaf and dumb within darknesses. Whomever Allah wills - He leaves astray; and whomever He wills - He puts him on a straight

path. (al-An’am 39)

Allah gave you the capacity for guidance, and the ability to get it, and it’s up to you to take it. Allah helps those who help themselves!

It is He who has sent down to you, [O Muhammad], the Book; in it are verses [that are] precise - they are the foundation of the Book - and others unspecific. As for those in whose hearts is deviation [from truth], they will follow that of it which is unspecific, seeking discord and seeking an interpretation [suitable to them]. And no one knows its [true] interpretation except Allah . But those firm in knowledge say, "We believe in it. All [of it] is from our Lord." And no one will be reminded except those of understanding. (Aali Imran 3)

Some AhadithThe Messenger of Allah (s) the most truthful, the most trusted, told us: "Verily the creation of any one of you takes place when he is assembled in his mother's womb; for forty days he is as a drop of fluid, then it becomes a clot for a similar period. Thereafter, it is a lump looking like it has been chewed for a similar period. Then an angel is sent to him, who breathes the ruh (spirit) into him. This Angel is commanded to write Four decrees: that he writes down his provision (rizq), his life span, his deeds, and whether he will be among the wretched or the blessed. I swear by Allah - there is no God but He - one of you may perform the deeds of the people of Paradise till there is naught but an arm's length between him and it, when that which has been written will outstrip him so that he performs the deeds of the people of the Hell Fire; one of you may perform the deeds of the people of the Hell Fire, till there is naught but an arm's length between him and it, when that which has been written will overtake him so that he

performs the deeds of the people of Paradise and enters therein . " [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Ali (r) narrated that one day the Prophet (s) was sitting with a wooden stick in his hand with which he was scratching the ground. He raised his head and said, “There is none of you, but has his place assigned either in the Fire or in Paradise.” They (the Companions) inquired, “O Allah’s Messenger! Why should we carry on doing good deeds, shall we depend (upon Qadar) and give up work?” The Prophet (s) said: “No, carry on doing good deeds, for everyone will find it easy (to do) such deeds that will lead him towards that for which he has been created”. Then he (s) recited the verse: “As for him who gives (in charity) and keeps his duty to Allah and fears Him, and believes in al-Husna, We will make smooth for him the path of Ease (goodness) (Surah al-Lail 92:5-7) . [Sahih Muslim]

The Prophet said وسلم عليه الله Verily, Allah will not allow my Ummah" :صلىto all agree on a dhalaalah." [Tirmidhi]

An-Nawwas bin Sam`an Al-Kilabi said that he heard the Prophet saying: Every heart is between two of the Fingers of the Most Beneficent (Allah), Lord of all that exists, if He wills, He makes it straight, and if He wills, He makes it stray. [Ahmad]

And he (s) said: «ت قلبي على دينك ب القلوب ثب «يا مقل(O You Who changes the hearts! keep my heart firm on Your religion) [Ahmad]

Ibn `Abbas said, "Allah prevents the believer from disbelief and the disbeliever from faith.

The Messenger of Allah ( وسلم عليه الله said: “The Pen is lifted from three (صلي(i.e., their deeds are not recorded):

1. a child until he reaches puberty;2. an insane man until he comes to his senses;3. one who is asleep until he wakes up.”

[Recorded in Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah]

Abu Dharr Al-Ghifari reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be

upon him, said, “Verily, Allah has pardoned my nation for their mistakes, their

forgetfulness, and what they are coerced into doing.” [Sunan Ibn Majah]

"Four will make a plea on the Day of Resurrection: A deaf man who could not hear, an insane man, a senile man and those who died in a time when there was no Messenger. So as for the deaf man, he will say, 'O my Lord, Islam came and I did not hear anything'. As for the insane he will say, 'Islam came while the children threw dung at me'. As for the senile he will say, 'Islam came and I could not comprehend anything'. As for the one who died in the time when there is no Messenger, he will say, 'O my Lord your Messenger did not come to me'. So their agreement will be taken that they will obey Him, then He will send a Messenger to them ordering them to enter the fire. By Him in Whose hand my souls is, if they would enter it, it would be cool and safe for them." [At-Tabarani and Ibn Hibban]
