(1) Band

The band program at Columbus North consists of nine weeks of marching band and twenty seven weeks of concert band. All students enrolled in the band program at Columbus North High School will participate in marching and concert bands. Students who have a Columbus North High School fall sport conflict with the marching band schedule will be excused from these rehearsals and performances. Students must inform directors by June 9th if they are planning to participate in a fall sport. These students must turn in a tape with all the marching music performed. The Concert & Symphonic Bands are assigned by the directors in the spring; The Wind Ensemble is by audition only. These groups will perform at various concerts and contests throughout the year; attendance is mandatory.

(2) OrchestraThe orchestra class is strings only. The orchestra also rehearses outside of school hours with the brass

and woodwind players that volunteer to be in the orchestra. This group will perform at various concerts and at the ISSMA orchestra contest in the spring.

(3) Jazz Bands The jazz bands, 25th Street Jazz, North Blues and Jazz Lab, are open to all students enrolled in Concert

Bands, Percussion Class or Orchestra. 25th Street Jazz and North Blues are scheduled during the school day. The Jazz Lab is open to any student interested in learning about jazz. Students will progress to the North Blues after one year of jazz study. Students wishing to perform with 25th Street Jazz must audition or be recommended by the director. The jazz bands perform many concerts throughout the year as well as compete at jazz festivals. Extra rehearsals and performances may be required outside of the school day.

(4) Sound of NorthThe Sound of North is the marching band for Columbus North High School. This group is made up of

all the band students and students who have auditioned for the color guard. The Sound of North performs at all home football games and competes throughout the state during the fall.

(5) Color GuardThe color guard is a part of the Sound of North. The color guard utilizes flags, rifles, sabers and dance.

Color guard auditions are open to any student enrolled at Columbus North High School; auditions are in the spring. Color Guard members must be enrolled in Dance Comp for non-instrumentalists or a band class for instrumentalists. The Winter Guard is composed of members of the Sound of North Color Guard. The Winter Guard competes in the winter months in the Indiana High School Color Guard Association circuit. Student’s Marching Band fees must be current to join Winter Guard.

(6) PercussionThe percussion line is open to all percussion students. Students playing non-marching instruments, such

as oboe and bassoon, are also eligible for the percussion line. The percussion section is divided into two distinct groups: the front ensemble and the battery. The front ensemble (also known as the pit) performs on a variety of keyboard instruments and percussion instruments. The battery performs on snare, tenor and bass drums, and is a marching unit. Acceptance into either area is by audition only.

(7) General RulesAs a representative of Columbus North High School and the entire Columbus community, it is

imperative that the appearance and behavior of the instrumental music members be above reproach.

1. No smoking, no drugs or alcoholic beverages at any time.2. You must obey your staff and bus chaperones at all times. They are carrying out the instructions

of the directors.3. No use of obscene language at any time when in uniform or connected with the band or

orchestra. (This includes during rehearsals.)4. You must take proper care of your uniform.5. Any excessive show of affection in public will be discouraged. Hand holding is OK; kissing is

not OK. 6. Do not participate in any activity that could reflect poorly on the Sound of North or the

Columbus North High School instrumental ensembles.

All school rules are in effect when participating with the ensembles. Since the band, orchestra, and color guard are co-curricular activities, all co-curricular rules apply.

(8) Rehearsals for the Sound of NorthBeginning in late May, the Sound of North starts preparation for the fall marching season.

New members, guard and percussion members should attend rehearsals labeled specifically “NEW MEMBERS, GUARD & PERC” on the Sound of North Calendar.

ALL members should attend rehearsals labeled “FULL BAND” on the Sound of North Calendar. These rehearsals will include marching fundamentals and music preparation.

In August, the Sound of North has an intense rehearsal schedule culminating with a full week of Band Camp.

Once school begins in August, the Sound of North rehearses: during class each school day Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:45-8:30 pm Sectionals on Wednesdays

3:30-5:30 pm (winds) 5:30-8:00 pm for battery

(9) AttendanceAttendance at all rehearsals and performances is mandatory. Students who have conflicts with summer

rehearsals should turn in conflict slips to the director. (If possible, plan late June or early July vacations.) Performance positions in the Sound of North are earned through good attendance and continued improvement in May and June and skill development throughout the season.

Alternates are a necessary component in any competitive marching band to insure that there is a balanced visual and musical production. Alternates do not have a marching position but will stand on the sideline and play. A member may be designated as an alternate under the following conditions: lack of ability to master the basic marching fundamentals or lack of ability to perform the competitive show, poor attendance, repeated violation of a rule, or sustaining an injury. A student designated as an alternate may or may not remain an alternate for the entire season if a marching position becomes available.

May & June rehearsals are important to the success of our competitive program. These are the rehearsals at which the majority of the fundamental skills are developed. In July, Band Camp weeks are required. If a student does not attend Band Camp, he/she will be designated as an alternate and, depending upon circumstances, may not march during the season.

(10) AbsencesAll performances and rehearsals during the school year are mandatory. During the summer, students

should fill out a conflict slip (see example on back page) in advance of an absence. These conflict slips are to be signed by a parent and turned in as soon as possible. If a student is ill on the day of rehearsal, call the band office answering machine prior to the start of rehearsal at 376-4258. Absences handled in this manner will be considered excused. Work is NEVER an excused absence; plan accordingly. Conflict slips are not accepted after June 8th. If there is a conflict once school begins, please contact Mr. Stultz or Mr. Burton immediately.

(11) Band CampBand Camp weeks are the most important weeks of the summer, and two of the most important weeks of

the entire season. During this time, the majority of the competitive program is learned . Band camp is required for all members of the Sound of North. Students not attending band camp will be designated alternates.

2. No gum or candy allowed on the field during rehearsal.3. No pagers or cellular phones are allowed. According to school policy, these items are not

allowed on school property.4. Tennis shoes or other appropriate shoes should be worn during rehearsal - no sandals or heavy-

(13) Drum MajorsDrum Majors will be selected each year for the Sound of North. Drum Majors must have at least one

year’s experience in the Sound of North. Selection will be based on leadership skills, directing ability, attitude and commitment. Drum Majors should also be good students and respected by the student body.

Drum Major auditions will be held in May and will include completion of an essay, command sequences and directing a portion of the upcoming competitive program. Selections will be made by a committee selected by the directors.

(14) Team LeadersTeam leaders will be chosen for each section of the band. Team leaders must have at least one year’s

experience in the Sound of North. Selection of team leaders will be based on leadership abilities, attitude and commitment to the program. Rehearsal TimingAfter school rehearsals:

Wednesday, August 2nd, 3:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m. Monday, August 7th, 4:00 p.m.-6:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 16th, 3:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m.

Starting Monday, August 21st, after school rehearsals will be as follows:o Monday 4:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.o Tuesday 5:45 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.o Wednesday Homeworko Thursday 5:45 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.o Friday Homework or Football Gameo Saturday Homework, rehearsal, or competition

Rule for competition: If a student misses the Thursday practice, they will not be able to perform on Friday. They are still required to attend the football game to rehearse with the rest of the band/guard. If a student misses the practice on Saturday morning, they will not be able to perform Saturday. SAT/ACT, appointments, and other events should be scheduled during non-rehearsal hours and on non-competition Saturdays.

AttendancePre- rehearsal : If you are going to be late to rehearsal you must first call or text one of the guard captains. If they are unresponsive then please call or text the director or assistant director in order for us to know where you are. This is due to the safety and security of every student/member of the program. If you fail to contact one of us your attendance will be marked as unexcused. THREE unexcused absences will result in a consequence for not following directions. This will also result in a 0 participation grade. Also the student and parent will receive phone calls from the director trying to figure out where the student is located. As soon as you find a conflict with the calendar, it is the student’s responsibility to inform the directors ASAP.

Post-rehearsal: After rehearsals the guard will return to the band room, hang up any equipment they do not plan on taking home for practice, and are free to leave. If the student needs to wait for their parent or guardian to arrive they must do so in the presence of the staff. The student must bring all of their belongings with them to

28

the band room before rehearsal starts. Going to their lockers or walking through the hallways after rehearsal will not be permitted. Failures to comply with these standards will result in disciplinary actions.

Summer BandSummer Band is very important to the success of the program. This is when the students learn the technique of the color guard as well as the show. The students are required to attend all summer band rehearsals. Both weeks of Band camp are MANDATORY. The students will be asked to bring their own lunch to the second week of band camp (8am-5pm) and have on the appropriate attire to be outside 80% of the day. Only water is allowed during this period. They may however have a sports drink or two but this is not in lieu of water consumption. Water and hydration is very important to the health and safety of our members.

*See Calendar*

HealthIt is important to realize that color guard is a sport. The students are athletes and have to learn to treat and take care of their bodies.

No sodas during band camp or at any marching band function If you have a prior injury, you need to wear a brace at all times Limiting fried foods Two weeks before band camp, go outside for 15-30 minutes a day to get the body acclimated to the sun.

If your child practices outside of rehearsal, this is a no brainer Walking or light jogging 15 – 30 minutes during the off season of the summer helps get the body in

shape. When at home require your child to drink at least 3 glasses of water. Healthy breakfast without milk should be consumed every day. Try adding a multi- vitamin too.

VolunteersWe always need parents’ help and support to make the season run smoothly. Attending Thursday night runs in the stadium are a great way to see the progress your child is making if you cannot attend shows. We will need parents to chaperone, sewers to help with costumes, a breakfast committee, or noise makers in the audience at competitions. This is the only place where your child enjoys for you to see them perform.

FeesAll money is NON-REFUNDABLE. The fall marching band fee is $450. We would like to receive the first payment of $75 by June 5th. A uniform for your child will not be ordered without this fee. Winterguard fees are $250. There will be additional costs that are not included such as body tights, make-up, or a guard shirt. If you have a financial situation, please talk to the directors.

FundraisersThere are many fundraisers throughout the year. It is important that if you sign-up, you have to attend the event. It looks bad on our program when people do not show up for work. All school rules apply at the events. If a student does misbehave, they will be asked to call their parents and a meeting with the directors will be scheduled.

Illness and InjuriesIf your child becomes ill at school or home, I should be informed via text, phone call, or email. Text is the best way to get information to me quickly. I am putting the responsibility on the members to inform me. Posting on Facebook is not informing me. I must have a written doctor’s note stating where you were for my records and to excuse the absenteeism. Anything that is highly contagious or seems contagious, please keep your child at home. If it is just a minor cold or similar condition, the student is required to attend practice. We will make sure the child is safe and participates in light work that will not harm them or worsen their condition. This will be reviewed on a case by case subject. This applies to injuries as well. I need a written and signed doctor’s note stating what the child’s injury is and what they can and cannot do. Without this I will not be allowed to let them rehearse or perform with the group due to safety concerns in the school’s student handbook.

If there are any questions, comments, or concerns unaddressed in this handbook or that arise throughout the season, you may contact the directors.

CNHS Band Volunteer Handbook2017-2018

The strength of a high school marching band is measured not only by the commitment to excellence demonstrated by its students, directors and staff – but in large measure, by the parent group that supports it.

This manual describes volunteer positions within the Columbus North Band Booster organization that are required for the support of our program and that allow us to keep our band fees at approximately HALF of what other bands in our competitive class charge.

All band families are expected to participate in the support of the Columbus North Band program through the volunteer opportunities described in this manual. Please use this as your guide when deciding where you would like to support your student as they strive for excellence.

Dear Band Parents,

Welcome to the Columbus North Band Boosters, the most dedicated and giving parents around! In the following pages, we have described the positions that make our organization tick. You will not find a harder working group of students, directors and staff, but without parental help, the Columbus North Band program would not be the elite program that it is today.

Volunteering gives you the opportunity to remain close to your child and in the know! Once your student sees how many supportive parents are involved, you will just become part of the team rather than one lone “team mom or dad.” You will find yourself being appreciated by the entire band – your teen included!

I hope that while you are reading this handbook, you will see something that fits your interests and areas of expertise. We greatly appreciate you sharing of your time, your unique talents and treasure to help this great music program and all of the awesome students involved. You will also find that there are plenty of parents who’ve been around a few years that would be happy to show you the ropes! So jump in, we look forward to serving with you.

Where do you fit in?As you can see by the coordinator positions, the possibilities are endless!

Listed below is a month-by-month listing of some of the opportunities for both volunteering, general band fundraising and individual student account fundraising. The events listed as ‘general band fundraiser’ are what determine whether band fees are increased. If the events are successful, band fees do not increase. If they are not successful, band fees increase. Success depends upon many factors, the most important being the volunteer base willing to work the events.

May:

Salute (General Band Fundraiser) – The Columbus North and East Bands join forces to provide concessions for the Salute Concert that is held on the Friday evening before Memorial Day. Volunteers help with grilling, stocking and selling concessions while listening to a fabulous concert! Shifts run for a couple of hours for this event.

Speedway Parking (Individual Student Account Fundraiser) – Band members and their parents sign up to work shifts for the Indianapolis 500. We do not actually park the cars – we direct them to parking spaces. Shifts TBA. A parent is required to work with their student or both parents can work! This is not a volunteer opportunity but a fundraising opportunity. Fundraising potential: $7.50 - $8.00/hour per person plus tickets to the infield.

July:

Columbus North Mid-States Invitational Ad sales (General Band Fundraiser) – beginning in July, a committee of band parents will begin canvassing the community to sell ads for the Invitational program. Local companies place ads to support the band in the program that is sold during the Invitational which takes place in September. This is our largest band fundraiser and requires approximately 100 volunteers the day of the event.

BAND CAMP!!! (Rocking Volunteer Opportunity!)– and so it begins – this week-long camp requires volunteers in a variety of areas including: hall monitors, nurses, monitors for gyms and pool during free time, lunch and dinner servers, chaperones for dance & photo button session workers. This is a great time to get to know the kids. They are very appreciative of all the parents who help during this week – especially those who serve meals! It is a grueling week where a little parent TLC goes a long way. Volunteer opportunities range from helping to serve lunches and dinners (1-1/2 hours) to pool monitors (2 hours), dance set up, chaperone, etc. 2-3 hours.

35

August:

Band Garage Sale (Student Account fundraiser) – Usually held the Saturday before school begins in August – this event is a group garage sale held in the Semi-circle drive at Northside. Students/Families sign up for a table and conduct their own sale. The permits and advertising of the sale are taken care of by the chairpersons of the event.

Marching season begins with the North/East Football game (Volunteer opportunity!)– this is where bus chaperones, support crew and uniform people, photographer, officially begin their season (although the support crew will work during the summer to help with the manufacturing of props and retrofit of the band trailer to accommodate this year’s show.) For descriptions, please see Volunteer Descriptions below. THIS SEASON WILL CONTINUE UNTIL THE END OF NOVEMBER.

Kiwanis Duck Race (Student Account Fundraiser) – students sell duck race adoptions up until the race in October. If the Kiwanis use the same formula as in past years, duck adoptions cost $5 and $4 goes into the student’s account. This is an 80% return!!! It doesn’t get any better than this!

September:

Columbus North Mid-States Marching Invitational – September 9, 2017– All parents on deck for this General Band fundraiser!! You can’t be turned away!! Please mark your calendar for this date. We cannot do it without every parent!

Bands from Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky are invited to compete in this event. The majority of the money made is through Invitational Program ad sales. Local area businesses place ads supporting all of the bands participating. Anyone with experience selling ads or with contacts within the community is encouraged to volunteer in this effort.

There are many volunteer opportunities involved with this event ranging from 2 hour shifts to 5 hour shifts.

November:

Band Card Sales (Student Account fundraiser) – the band sells discount cards to local businesses. The cards sell for $10 with a portion of at least 50% going to student accounts. These cards are very easy to sell. The band office receives calls from people every year who have not been contacted by band students in order to get the cards – sort of like Girl Scout cookies, people expect them and look for them.

Please Note: This list is by no means complete. We are continually looking for other fundraisers for our band students. Often times, the arts council or another group in town will be looking for students and be willing to pay for their time towards Individual Student Accounts. This has been the case in the past with the Columbus Block Party. It has not been listed this year because of the work going on around the Commons. We are not sure if the event will be held, but if it is, our kids may have the opportunity to work the event.

Volunteer Job Descriptions

There are many jobs involved from the parent perspective in the running of the Columbus North band. Listed below are descriptions of some of the main volunteer needs. Others will pop up as the year progresses and will be described either by the volunteer coordinators, the class reps or in newsletter articles calling for help.

Concessions workers/General Band Fundraisers Salute - This is a free concert performed as a gift to the community by the Columbus Indiana

Philharmonic. The concert is always the Friday before Memorial Day. The Columbus North and Columbus East Band Boosters join forces to provide concessions before and during the concert. The simple menu includes hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, cookies, popcorn and drinks. Shifts typically start at 5 p.m. and last a couple of hours each and are manned by students and parents. Volunteers are needed for grilling, set-up, tear down and selling of concessions.

North Band Invitational – Concessions are provided for the band invitational and are run similar to football concessions. Volunteers are needed for set-up, cooking, selling and tear down. The invitational is a late-afternoon/evening event this year.

Marching Support Crew Member (Volunteer Opportunity!) – These positions seem daunting, but are really very specific. Everyone is given responsibility for a particular aspect of the job, thus the task performs like a well-oiled machine. It is NOT necessary that you be able to make it to every event if you sign up to help with this part of the band. There is a lot of camaraderie within this group!

Football Games – the support crew is responsible for transporting the pit equipment from the band practice field (behind Schmidt Elementary) to the North football stadium and then placing the equipment, props, etc. on the field for the halftime performance. After halftime, the equipment is moved back to the school with the help of the band students playing in the pit. Support Crew members arrive at the practice field at 6 p.m.

Competition Days – the support crew is responsible for loading the pit equipment, drums and large instruments onto the transport, unloading the equipment at the competition site, placing equipment on the field for the performance, reloading the equipment after the performance and then unloading it once again upon return to North after the competition. Times vary depending upon the competition schedule.

37

Uniform Help (Volunteer Opportunity!) Football Games – parents arrive at about 5:30 in the uniform room to assist students as they dress for

the performance. This job usually is over by 6 p.m. when students are due to report to the practice field. You will make sure that students adhere to the uniform rules (black socks, gloves, hand out plumes, hair off the collar).

Competition Days – duties are similar to that of the football games but are attended to off-site. Students are responsible for putting their uniforms and hats on the transport and retrieving them once we are at the competition site. A table is then set up outside the transport where students can purchase items they have forgotten (gloves, socks), pick up plumes, shine shoes with armor-all wipes, get help with hair, etc. The hours vary depending upon the competition schedule.

Concert Band – parents arrive 30 minutes before students are due to be dressed in concert clothing for concerts or competitions to assist students with tuxedos and concert dresses.

Hemming, fittings, alterations – with the new marching band uniforms, very little will need to be altered, but all students need to be fitted before each season and dresses and tuxedos will need to be altered and hemmed to fit the students. If you are interested in helping with this, please sign up with the uniform coordinator. Then she will e-mail or call you with the times and deadlines for performing these tasks.

Band Camp (Volunteer Opportunity) Meal servers – help serve lunch and dinner and then clean the tables after students leave Drivers to pick up meals – dinner come from area restaurants. This person is responsible for picking up

the meal at the prescribed time and delivering it to the North cafeteria. Pool monitors – during the afternoon free time, monitor student activity in the pool area. The pool area

monitor is not responsible for lifeguard duties. A professional lifeguard is hired. Nurse – the nurse is responsible for monitoring students during the marching portions of band camp for

heat-related stress. Dance – chaperones, set-up, clean-up crews for the band camp dance that takes place one evening

during the week. Parent preview dinner – it is a tradition to provide concessions for parents coming to the parent

preview on the Thursday evening of band camp. The meal usually consists of hamburgers or hot dogs, chips, cookie and drink. It is an opportunity for parents to get together before the performance and have a casual meal. Volunteers man the serving line and cash box and cook the hamburgers and hot dogs.

Chaperone (Volunteer Opportunity) – This is a rewarding job that is not very difficult. The students know what is expected of them and there is rarely a problem.

Ride buses with students to and from performances Maintain order on the bus Help students with uniforms Stay with your bus and students until they proceed to warm-up Immediately rejoin your students after the performance

Marching Band Invitational (General Band Fundraiser) –

38

There are many elements involved in hosting a marching band invitational – from hospitality for the judges and bands to selling ad space in the Invitational program.

Hospitality – prepare meals for judges Water stations – provide water for bands before and after their performances Traffic control – helping bands to park in their designated area. Stop traffic when band is in transition

from one venue to another Judges secretary – attend to the judges requirements during the judging process Host – greet your band upon arrival, show them restroom facilities, take them to warm-up and

performance venues Gate monitors, ticket and program sales Program ad sales – approach local area businesses regarding ad placement in the Invitational program
