They have learned so many wonderful things during Reading Workshop. In the classrooms their teachers devoted more time to shared reading, reading aloud, and word study. They learned to read alone and with a partner. They know that reading is all around them. The students have learned so much about their Reading Superpowers. The powers they have learned to use are “Pointer Power” in which they point to each word as they read. They learned “Snap Word Power” where they know their sight words in a snap, and “Picture Power” when they look at the picture to make sure it matches the words on the page. “Persistence Power” is when the students keep trying and use their strategies when a text is challenging for them. All of these helped the students read with more fluency, expression, and drama. The students made huge gains in their literacy powers to become “Avid Readers”. The students talked deeply about books, envisioning the drama of a story, sharing their responses and continue to use their reading muscles during reading workshop. Vocabulary continued to develop as the students transitioned more into non-fiction reading. Poetry was another opportunity that expanded word knowledge and increased vocabulary development. The ultimate goal was to celebrate children’s natural curiosity as they continue to grow their social skills along with their reading skills in an engaging, memorable, and appropriate way. Please continue to support the students as they use their new reading skills to become lifelong readers. Writing Workshop Words are like magic wands, they can make things happen. When your child wants the latest toy they use their persuasive “language” to try get you to buy that toy, and sometimes those words actually work, that toy becomes theirs. This month your child will put those words on paper as they write persuasively. With persuasive writing the writers write in ways that convince readers. Math Workshop In May, chapter 9 & 10 focuses on a new critical area, Identifying and Describing Shapes . Reading WorkshopOur students have built on their foundational skills to remain super readers this year! They have learned so many wonderful things during Reading Workshop. In the classrooms their

teachers devoted more time to shared reading, reading aloud, and word study. They learned to read alone and with a

partner. They know that reading is all around them. The students have learned so much about their

Reading Superpowers. The powers they have learned to use are “Pointer Power” in which they point to each word as they

read. They learned “Snap Word Power” where they know their sight words in a snap, and “Picture Power” when they

look at the picture to make sure it matches the words on the page. “Persistence Power” is when the students keep trying and use their strategies when a text is challenging for them.

All of these helped the students read with more fluency, expression, and drama.

The students made huge gains in their literacy powers to become “Avid Readers”. The students talked

deeply about books, envisioning the drama of a story, sharing their responses and continue to use their reading muscles

during reading workshop. Vocabulary continued to develop as the students transitioned more into non-fiction reading.

Poetry was another opportunity that expanded word knowledge and increased vocabulary development. The

ultimate goal was to celebrate children’s natural curiosity as they continue to grow their social skills along with their

reading skills in an engaging, memorable, and appropriate way. Please continue to support the students as they use

their new reading skills to become lifelong readers. Writing Workshop

Words are like magic wands, they can make things happen. When your child wants the latest toy they use their persuasive “language” to try get you to buy

that toy, and sometimes those words actually work, that toy becomes theirs. This month your child will put those words on paper as they write persuasively. With persuasive writing the writers write in ways that convince readers.

Math WorkshopIn May, chapter 9 & 10 focuses on a new critical area, Identifying and Describing Shapes. By the end of the chapter, students will be able to answer the essential question, How can you

identify, name, and describe two & three-dimensional shapes?” They will use attributes such as size, color, shape, and physical characteristics to determine similarities and differences of two and three-dimensional shapes.

Rainbow Kids

For the remainder of this school year our students will be reviewing and practicing the Rainbow Kids

concepts.  We are confident that as our students utilize these concepts they will grow socially,

emotionally and academically. They will develop into well-rounded citizens because they are “Tomorrow’s

Future”.

Physical Education Corner This month in Physical Education, students have been working hard on their throwing, catching, rolling and dribbling skills. Students are very excited to practice their skills and show you what they have learned.  Don't have a ball? Use small stuffed animals or roll up a pair of socks and use a laundry basket as a "basketball hoop". Challenge your child to toss the item into the basket. Change the location of the basket to a further distance or height to increase the challenge. How many times can you get the item in the basket? Have fun and please encourage your child to be active at home!
