When I joined Farm Fare I was appointed as a Systems Accountant. The position was created as Farm Fare was in the process of redesigning and rewriting their home grown system. Premier's DP department were leaning fairly heavily on them to join the rest of the group in designing a new system and make it group specific.

My brief was to learn all the systems that were being used at Farm Fare and come back with recommendations.

Farm Fare was involved with the breeding of two kinds of chickens: a) broilers and b) layers. Farm Fare had farms spread through out Southern Africa and was also involved in genetically improving the quality of both types of chickens.

Amongst the systems I designed there was also a system, which included integrating Bar code scales into the production process. This enabled the plants to establish at a very short time what their yield (live mass over dressed mass) was for the day. This I later expanded into a complete point of sale system, which included stock, purchasing, creditors, debtors, invoicing. The normal nominal ledger, cashbook etc. was also included. Items were scanned at the till (after the operator established whether it was a cash sale or not), stock and sales would then be updated.

I was part of the South African Article Numbering Association Steering Committee who were instrumental in installing Bar Coding into the Chain Stores in South Africa, I was also part of the committee which investigated outer case bar coding and electronic (EDI) orders placed on suppliers.

Alpha Laval was the South African branch of a Swedish farming and engineering company. I joined them as the financial manager and was responsible for the entire accounting function, which included an IBM S34. The Systems were MSS. Wages, Salaries, Job Costing, Creditors, and Debtors. MAPIX General Ledger, MAPIX Inventory and MRP.

It was at this stage that I discovered I was more inclined towards computers than accounts.

I left Alpha Laval when I was offered a position as Farm Fare (Pty) Ltd. working with computers and computer systems.


Victor Kent (Pty) Ltd

Victor Kent (Pty) Ltd. was a division of BTR. I joined Victor Kent as a Financial Manager reporting to the Financial Director. My duties included the preparation of the monthly accounts, cash forecasts, controlling the foreign exchange (the major part of Victor Kent's goods were imported), including negotiating finance and rolling the finance where necessary.

I was promoted to group administration manager nine months after joining. This involved the controlling of the total control of the stores. I did the forecasts of all the inventory purchases ensuring that each of the stock holdings was correctly maintained. Controlling the budgets and also ensuring that the products were ordered in time to ensure that the promised delivery times were maintained.

I designed a number of manual systems to ensure that the perpetual stock count was maintained.

There were 9 people reporting to me while I was the Financial Manager and 11 as an Admin Manager.


Wynn's Car Care Products (Pty) Ltd

Wynn's Car Care Products (Pty) Ltd. is a multinational company with its Head Office in Fullerton California.

As Office Manager my duties included assets, communication, looking after the building, generally running of the administration facility. In this position I reported directly to the Managing Director.

As Financial Manager, I was responsible for the entire accounting function. 12 staff members reported to me in this position.

Our reporting was done directly to Fullerton in California. Our pack had to be presented on the 4th working day of the new month. This presented a problem, as we were unable to get the pack there on time. We then embarked on a computer project to facilitate the presenting of the pack.

We eventually designed an integrated accounting / distribution system. The system chosen was the NCR 8200, the only MINI multi user multi-tasking machine available at that time.

A software house in Johannesburg built the programs.


The Witwatersrand Gold Mines Employees Provident Fund

The Witwatersrand Gold Mines Employees Provident Fund were the administrators of the mines provident fund of that name, the Mine Officials Pension Fund, the Mine Employees Pension Fund and the Mines Death Benefit Fund.

My duties included the keeping of books for the above funds, producing quarterly income statements and balance sheets, as well as the preparation of the annual statements. The purchasing of stationary and fixed assets.

I left the Provident fund, as the salaries being paid at the time were way below market rates.

I joined National Board of Executors to work for one of the bank managers I used to work for, who assembled a number of his ex-staff around him when he left the bank.

I started off as an accounts clerk in the script department, and was later transferred to the accounts department. I did all the bank and mortgage accounts. I was promoted to assistant accountant. Part of my duties was to offer the best interest rates to institutions for short-term investments over month ends.

One of these institutions was the Mines Provident Fund, who offered me a position in the accounts department.
