UNDERSTANDING YOUR EYES
Your eyes are little short of an optical miracle. But if your focus is imperfect (i.e. when the cornea, lens or eye isan irregular shape), light cannot focus accurately on the retina and the image you see is blurred. Laser visioncorrection is ideally suited to the treatment of such conditions.

LIGHT ENTERING EYE
POINT OF FOCUS
▼
Your eyes work just like a camera. Lightrays pass through the clear part at the front(the cornea) then through the lens, whichfocuses them onto the ‘screen’ at the backof the eye (the retina). There, millions ofphotoreceptors (light-sensitive nerve cells)turn the image into electrical impulses thatare transmitted to your brain through theoptical nerve.
Normal eyeIn a normal (emmetropic) eye, the corneaand lens are matched to the length of theeye, focussing light directly on the retina. This produces a perfectly focussed imageat all distances.
Shortsight (Myopia)If distant objects are blurred, you may beshortsighted. In this case your eye is toolong, so that rays of light fall in front of theretina and not directly on it.
Longsight (Hyperopia) If close objects are blurred, you may belongsighted. Your eye is too short, causingincoming light rays to fall behind yourretina and not directly on it.
AstigmatismBoth shortsighted and longsighted eyes canalso have astigmatism. The cornea is notperfectly round but shaped more like arugby ball. Therefore, rays of light are bentin different directions and do not form asharp focus point, so that images blur.
Age-related longsight (Presbyopia) This occurs in many people as they getolder, traditionally requiring reading glassesor bifocal lenses to correct. The lens in theeye gradually stiffens as it matures and thusloses it’s ability to accommodate light raysefficiently. Treatments are available fromAccuvision which can offer excellent resultsfor people with this condition, please seepage 12 for further information.

IS LASER SURGERY RIGHT FOR YOU?
Please note: This is intended as a general guide and there are always exceptions.Detailed analysis of your eligibility for treatment can only be achieved at your consultation.
Treatment eligibilityEvery week we successfully treat patientswho have been refused at other laser eyesurgery clinics because they are unable toprovide the leading edge solutionsAccuvision can.
However, we will decline treatment if webelieve the outcome cannot be accuratelypredicted or if treatment is likely to causecomplications.
In general, the suitability of our proceduresfor you depends on factors such as:
• Your age (over 18 years)
• Stability of your current prescription
• The degree of optical error
• The thickness of your cornea
• The existence of any eye disease
• The size of your pupil
• Corneal mapping data
• Wavefront analysis results
Laser eye surgery may not be suitable for everyone and for many patientsthe clinic may not be suitable for the patient. Accuvision have the technology, surgical skills and clinical experience to safely treat the highest and mostcomplex prescriptions that other clinics are unable to treat.
4▼
If you have been told by another clinic that you are unsuitable for laser eye surgery giveus a call. If anyone can help you, we can.
Yorkshire and England cricketer, Tim Bresnan had laser eye surgery with Accuvisionprior to the England Ashes win in Australia in 2011.

“I consulted many other lasereye specialists, but I was toldthat laser would not help. However, thanks to AccuvisionI have managed to get nearperfect sight, which issomething I never expected.”JYOTI CHOUDRIE
YOUR INITIAL CONSULTATION
The basis for successful treatment of visualdisorders is an accurate diagnosis. At yourinitial consultation, a fully qualified Accuvisionoptometrist will perform a series of diagnostictests and scans to accurately assess thecondition and suitability of your eyes.
Next, using our highly sophisticatedWavefront Analyzer a precise threedimensional mapping of any visualimperfect ions is generated. This equipmentallows an unprecedented level of accuracyand the data collected is used by the surgeonto create a personalised laser correctiontreatment ideally matched to your eyes.
At Accuvision, Wavefront analysis is astandard part of the assessment procedureand incurs no additional cost.
Until recently, diagnosis and treatment ofhigher order corneal irregularities was notalways possible and outcomes could not beaccurately predicted. This resulted in fewerpatients being accepted for treatment. In suchcases Accuvision now employs theWavefront Topolyzer which has beenspecifically designed to measure andgenerate high resolution data for eyes withsevere irregularities. It was developed for themost difficult cases, in which standard
Wavefront measurement on its own wouldprove cl inically ineffective. Thanks to thisremarkable technology Accuvision is able todiagnose and treat more complex conditionsthan many other providers in the UK.
On completion of our comprehensive testingprocedure you will be advised of yoursuitability for surgery and the results whichcan be achieved in your particular case.Throughout your consultation our friendly staffwill be more than happy to answer anyquestions you may have and help you tounderstand all aspects of our procedures.

HELP US TO GIVE YOU THE BEST RESULTS
Your consultationIf you have any old prescriptions for lensesor glasses (or details of any eye treatmentyou have had), please bring them along. These will help us to see how your eyeshave altered over time, and assess howbest to treat you.
Contact lenses can alter the shape of youreye, affecting test results. For this reason itis very important to stop using them for aweek before your consultation for soft lensesand three weeks for rigid lenses. Thisallows time for your eye to restore itsnatural shape.
The examination process can temporarilyblur your vision so we recommend that youavoid driving home and make alternativearrangements.
Treatment day For your comfort it is best to wear loosecasual clothing. Do not wear anycosmetics, deodorant, hair products orperfume on the day of your treatment asvapours and particles can interrupt the laser
beam, affecting results. We recommendthat you avoid driving home and wouldsuggest that you bring a friend to drive youor make alternative arrangements.
After your treatmentDepending on the treatment you have hadyou will be provided with either clearprotective shields or contact lenses to protectyour eyes during the healing process. Youwill also be prescribed eye drops to reducediscomfort and aid healing. During thehealing process it is important to avoid:
• Rubbing your eyes• Wearing eye make-up for 2 weeks• Swimming for 1 month• Using sunbeds for 1 month• Activities which may result in eye injury• Smoky or dusty atmospheres
Full instructions will be provided at yourconsultation and on the day of surgery. We will also provide you with a scheduleof revisits to your clinic, to check on yourprogress following your treatment.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
“I am so pleased that Ichose Accuvision. The wholeexperience was professionalfrom the time I picked up thephone to discuss a possibleappointment through tomy aftercare.”CAROLINE NEWMAN
How successful is laser visioncorrection at Accuvision? Our success is built upon giving ourpatients the very best outcome that canpossibly be achieved through laser visioncorrection. Even though we treat manypatients who have been refused by otherclinics due to extreme prescriptions or eyeconditions, over 99% of our patients areable to drive without glasses. At yourconsultation we will discuss what can beachieved in your individual case.
How much does it cost?Like your eyes, every treatment plan isdifferent. However, while higher orderprescriptions are more expensive weinclude state-of-the art Wavefrontdiagnostics as a standard part of every‘pre-op’ at no extra cost. Overall our pricesare very competitive and you areguaranteed an unsurpassed level of service.
Does it hurt? Laser treatment is virtually painless. However, you may experience some mild to moderatediscomfort and watering of the eyes for afew hours after LASIK treatment.
Do the results last? The effects of laser treatment are permanent, but your eyes may change over time. That’swhy we recommend having the procedureafter major eye changes have occurred inyour life. Your surgeon can review thechanges you have had and help you decidewhether or not to undergo treatment.
What happens when I get older? As we reach our mid 40's, the fine focusingmechanism of the lens does not function aswell as when we were younger. As a resultmost of us will require reading glasses whenwe reach this age. There are treatmentsavailable from Accuvision which can help torelieve this condition.
If my vision changes later in life, can I have repeat surgery? In most cases, an enhancement may be asolution to vision changes later in life. Ourspecialists will examine your eyes anddetermine whether this can be performed.
Are there long-term side effects? Laser eye surgery has been performed formore than 20 years and no complications
have been documented that have not beenencountered in the first year of follow-up.Minor complications such as haziness, delayed healing and night-time glare havebeen reported, although these are very rareand in almost all cases can be treated.
How long before I can see well? Visual rehabilitation after treatment is rapid. Most people achieve good vision the dayafter surgery and find that their eyes feelfairly normal 24 hours later. However, yoursight will improve even further, and the verybest vision could take two to three weeks.
Can both eyes be corrected at thesame time?Because of increased safety andpredictability we are happy to treat botheyes at the same time.
Will I require multiple treatments? We treat many complex prescriptions. In spiteof this over 98% of cases require just a singletreatment. A second enhancement (subject tomedical recommendation) will be offered atno extra cost (within a year of treatment).

Laser vision correction is achieved by re-shaping the cornea, using a laserto remove minute amounts of tissue. With recent advances in technologyour laser procedures are safer, faster and more effective than ever before.
ACCUVISION ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY
Wavelight® Advanced TechnologyPlatformWhere older, less technically advancedlasers produce a broad, square-shapedbeam, our laser systems produce a rounded,sharply-focused profile measuring only afraction of a millimetre across. This allows usto smoothly remove the minutest amounts ofcorneal tissue, with the utmost accuracy.
The Wavelight ® lasers we use are the fastestlasers available in the UK today. Withrepetition rates of up to 500 Hz treatmenttimes have been reduced to a few seconds, delivering a more comfortable procedure forthe patient. They are especially capable fortreating high myopia, hyperopia, astigmatismand other complex and intensive procedures.
Perfect Pulse Technology®
Ensures safe and precise work at a highspeed. Every single laser pulse is completelycontrolled from the moment it is created towhere it meets the eye. Each ultra-thin laserpulse is used to sculpt the corneal surface ofthe eye with the utmost precision.
3D Eye Movement TrackingComputer controlled eye-tracking allowsprecise application of the laser beam even ifyour eye moves and ensures safe, accurateremoval of corneal tissue. Using such a finelaser beam at such high speed, the AllegrettoEye-Q is equipped with a synchronised 3D eyetracker to follow even fast eye movement witha response time of less than 8 milliseconds. Ifeye movement exceeds the safe limits of theeye tracker, the beam will momentarily stop toallow re-centring of the laser.
Wavefront LASIK/Trans-Epi LASIKInstead of just correcting focussing errors, wecan now take a wavefront image – literally, a'fingerprint' of each person's optical pathway– and use the information to reduce or eveneliminate higher order aberrations, improvingvisual acuity. This means that potentially yourvision could be improved beyond that whichyou have previously achieved with glasses orlenses. Applicable to both LASIK and Trans-Epi LASIK procedures, Wavefront allows foroptimal, eye specific correction that waspreviously unattainable. It can also provideimproved vision in all lighting conditions.

“I went to 4 different placesbefore choosing Accuvision. Ichose them as they made mefeel at ease, seemed honest, were not pushy, and seemed tohave greater experience ofdealing successfully with poorerprescriptions like mine. Theywere also competitively priced.”JAMES BELLAMY
LASIK AND ‘ALL LASER’ PROCEDURES
Anaesthetic drops areapplied to the eye
A protective flap of cornealtissue is created and gentlylifted to reveal the innercorneal layer
The inner corneal layer isreshaped with the precisionexcimer laser beam
The corneal flap iscarefully replaced andbegins to heal immediately

Wavefront diagnostics are part of any Accuvision pre-op assessment, providing exacting data that is used with other readings to offer the verybest LASIK and Trans-Epithelial Surface Treatment – ‘all laser’ vision correction.
LASIKThe LASIK procedure is performed usingtopical anaesthetic (eye drops) on anoutpatient basis. It is simple, fast and highlypredictable, performed in an appropriatesurgical environment approved by the CareQuality Commission.
An automated device is used to create avery thin flap on the corneal surface which isfolded back to allow the excimer laser to re-shape the cornea. LASIK causes minimaldiscomfort and provides rapid recoverytimes. Incidence of postoperativecomplication is extremely low.
Some patients may experience slight irritation and light sensitivity after the procedure butthese effects usually last a few hours. Manypatients notice improved vision immediatelyafter surgery, although it usually takes a fewdays for the full benefit to be appreciated.
‘All Laser’ Trans-Epithelial Surface TreatmentThis ‘no-touch’ procedure is an advanced formof surface laser treatment and is performed intwo stages. Firstly, the laser is used to removethe corneal surface layer (epithelium) withpinpoint accuracy and regularity, therebyminimising possible stromal tissue loss.Secondly, the laser is programmed to removeexactly the right amount of corneal stromaltissue to optimise your visual outcome.
Following treatment a bandage contact lens isplaced over the cornea for a few days as theepithelial layer heals. As no alcohol, mechanical device or suction is used during thelaser eye correction treatment, the healing timescompared with normal surface treatments aremuch faster and less painful. It also avoids anyflap complications and is less invasive, therefore more appropriate for thinner corneas.

Enhanced procedures now allow the benefits of laser vision correction tobe enjoyed by patients previously considered untreatable. Accuvision nowtreat a wider range of patients and prescriptions than any other UK clinic.
WAVEFRONT AND BEYOND
Wavefront Optimised LASIKSome laser technologies induce aberrations(irregularities) on the corneal shape profileduring treatment. The wavelight laser platformat Accuvision uses special calculations(nomograms) to prevent these aberrationsand so helps to maintain better visual quality.
The Wavelight Allegretto Eye-Q laser useshigh resolution data to produce much larger, more uniform treatment zones, vastlyimproving night vision. It also enablestreatment for patients with large pupils withutmost efficacy.
Customised Guided Wavefront High resolution wavefront data maps canalso be incorporated into the customtreatment plan to correct for specific 'higherorder aberrations'. Again the emphasis is onimproving visual quality beyond standardtreatment.
Topography Guided LASIKA corneal topographer is an instrument thatmeasures the corneal shape and contour.Topography guided LASIK uses the resultingcorneal contour map to guide the laserpattern, thereby correcting distortions onthe cornea.
This is especially useful for patients withcorneal abnormalities and in the rare casethat a patient requires remedial proceduresafter previous standard LASIK treatment.
The table opposite further summarises theseoptions. We will advise you as to the mostappropriate treatment strategy for yourindividual case.

“It is one of the best decisionsI have made. I know from myown experience that whetherto undergo an operation is avery difficult decision to make, but I am so pleased that Idecided to go ahead.”NICK DRIES
At Accuvision we don’t just provide advanced laser vision correction. Our wealth of experience and expertiseallows us to offer additional bespoke treatments and specialised surgical solutions for a wide range of visionand eye health conditions.
TOTAL EYE CARE SERVICES
Reading Vision CorrectionAs the lens inside the eye hardens throughage, we lose the ability to focus our visionfor close activities such as reading, acondition known as presbyopia. If suitable, you may choose to undergo a ‘Monovision’procedure. This involves laser correction ofyour dominant eye for distance vision, while the other is corrected for near visionwithout spectacles. Monovision offers thebest chance of reduced dependence onspectacles for most situations.
CK (Conductive Keratoplasty)This has now been superseded by ourMonovision reading restoration treatment.
Implantable Contact Lenses (ICL’s)and Intra Ocular Lenses (IOL’S)Similar to a small contact lens, theimplantable contact lens is placed insidethe eye, in front of the natural lens, correcting severe cases of short sight, longsight and astigmatism. Intra Ocular lensesare used as a replacement to the naturallens in the eye to improve your vision.
Cataract TreatmentCataract surgery has been performed formany years and is a standard procedure. It restores clear sight by the replacement ofthe clouded natural lens in the eye, significantly improving the quality of vision.
Keratoconus TreatmentKeratoconus is usually caused by thinningof the cornea and results in it ‘bulgingforward’ causing vision distortion. As thiscondition develops, it may not be easilycorrectable with contact lenses or glasses.Intacs can be inserted into the periphery ofthe cornea to help flatten the surface andreduce the optical defect.
Corneal CollagenCross-linking (C3R)Corneal Collagen Cross-linking withRiboflavin (C3R) is a new treatment thatincreases the stiffness and rigidity of thecornea and stabilises Keratoconus. TheC3R treatment has been shown to increasethe diameter of the collagen fibres in thecornea and enhance the cross-linking of thefibres. This has a stabilising effect on
progressive Keratoconus and reduces thevisual impairment associated with it. Oncestabilised by C3R the eye can beconsidered for further treatment.
AccuwaveTM Topography GuidedAdvanced Custom AblationIn addition to simple ‘cross-linking’Accuvision can now offer selected patientscombined corneal collagen cross-linkingwith laser re-shaping. Please call us on0845 000 2020 for more information anda copy of our keratoconus booklet.
NeuroVision treatment for‘Lazy Eye’ (Amblyopia)This is a clinically proven, non-surgical andrisk-free treatment for Amblyopia (Lazy Eye),a condition in which there is loss of bestcorrected spectacle vision in one or botheyes. The eye appears healthy, but vision ispoor. It is the only existing treatment foradults having ‘Lazy Eye’ which is approvedin the USA and Europe.
