This is the definitive edition of this work incorporating revisions made to the wind band score published in 1993. Composition of the work was begun in December 1989 and completed on February 1 of the following year. Commissioned by the Maritime Self-Defence Force Band of Sasebo, the first performance was given at the band’s 18th regular concert held at the Sasebo Civic Auditorium in Nagasaki Prefecture on February 16, 1990, conducted by bandmaster First Lieutenant Iwashita Shōji and with Iwakame Yūko playing the solo ryūteki part. The orchestral version was created on the basis of a commission from the Kyoto Civic Orchestra and first performed on April 18, 1999 by them under the direction of Odano Hiroyuki. This version subsequently underwent several major revisions, the final revised version receiving its premiere on March 2, 2008 in Switzerland in a performance by the Aargau Symphony Orchestra under Douglas Bostock. The first performance in Japan of this version was given by the Kyushu Symphony Orchestra under Shimono Tatsuya on April 28, 2008.

Publishing historyThe first movement of this work was published as a supplement in the monthly magazine Band Journal in January 1991. The second and third movements were then published a year later in the January 1992 edition of the same magazine. The score and the set of parts of the band version were published by Ongaku no Tomo Sha in June 1993, separated into the first movement and the second and third movements. The orchestral version was published later in July 2011 by Ongaku no Tomo Sha, with the parts being available for rental. The work has also been performed in arrangements for piano solo (first movement only), for voice (second movement, Inferno, poem by Hayashi Nozomu), and for piano duet (third movement).

RecordingsThe first recording of the work appeared on CD in a performance by the Tokyo Kōsei Wind Orchestra conducted by Odano Hiroyuki (Kōsei Publishing Company KOCD-2902) with Iwakame Yūko playing the solo ryūteki part. It was recorded again on CD on a December 1998 release featuring the works of Ito Yasuhide in a performance by the Osaka Shion Wind Orchestra conducted by Kimura Yoshihiro (Brain BOCD-7402) with the solo ryūteki part played by Fujii Kyoe. Several other recordings have also been made.

DurationThe first movement lasts approximately 7 and a half minutes, the second movement 6 minutes and the third movement 6 and a half minutes, making a total duration of just under 20 minutes.

Instrumentation2 flutes (2nd doubling piccolo), 1 oboe, 1 bassoon, 1 E flat clarinet, 3 B flat clarinet parts, 1 B flat bass clarinet, 2 E flat alto saxophones, 1 B flat tenor saxophone, 1 E flat baritone saxophone, 4 horns in F, 3 B flat trumpets, 3 trombones, euphoniums, tubas, double basses, 1 timpani and three more percussionists (first percussionist playing glockenspiel, snare drum, 3 tomtoms, bells, gyoban (fish-shaped board), cymbals (shared with the second percussionist), xylophone (shared with the third percussionist); second percussionist playing cymbals, large drum, triangle, tambourine, gong, vibraphone (gong and vibraphone shared with the third percussionist); third percussionist playing gong, vibraphone, xylophone, chimes, ratchet, suspended cymbals). The ryūteki flute appears in a solo capacity in the second movement, although it may be replaced by the piccolo. If two clarinets are assigned to each of the three B flat clarinet parts, a performance by around 35 players will be possible. (This was roughly the number of players who took part in the first performance.) In the case of the wind band version, players may be augmented in some of the parts. Additional brass players are frequently added to the ensemble, meaning that the number of players may be in the region of 40 to 45.

Genesis of the workFollowing the success of Festal Scenes for wind band composed in 1986 to a commission from the Maritime Self-Defence Force Band of Ōminato in Aomori Prefecture, this same work proved to be a great success when it received its first performance in the United States the following year. It was published in the United States and marked my debut in the field of band music. This in turn led to my receiving a commission from the Maritime Self-Defence Force Band of Sasebo. The commissioner of this new work specifically requested that it be structured in three movements and that the ryūteki flute be used in the second movement. The request for use of the ryūteki was prompted by the idea that the work should be inspired by the ancient Yoshinogari tumulus site and that this ancient flute that forms part of the Gagaku ensemble was the instrument best suited to allude to early Japanese history. It was problematic though in that the historical background of the ryūteki is unrelated to the chronologically much earlier
