Viking CertainTeed Asphalt ShinglesThe Superior Shingle Look
LongevityThe first line of defence against the weather is the roof. It is vital that you consider the importance of choosing a roofing system that will protect your home.
Viking CertainTeed Shingles have evolved over the last 100 years through world-class manufacturing methods which are rigorously lab tested. However, the most meaningful test results are the actual condition of live roofs having been subjected to decades of weathering in some of the world’s toughest environments…CertainTeed roofs stand the test of time.
Independently tested by BRANZ as well, you can be sure Viking CertainTeed shingles will withstand the most extreme of New Zealand conditions.
Temperature and UV ResistanceIce dam technology and multiple overlapping shingle layers, ensure a Viking CertainTeed Shingle roof can endure the greatest of temperature extremes.
Additionally, the natural stone finish coating developed by 3M, as well as its fibreglass reinforcing, provide unequalled UV resistance.
Viking CertainTeed Shingles are also resistant to mildew and salt atmospheres while possessing a high impact resistance.
Wind Resistance100 years of development in extreme conditions has led to Viking CertainTeed Shingles being warranted for wind resistance of up to 205kmph.
Potable WaterViking CertainTeed asphalt shingles meet the AS/NZS 4020 standard for testing of products used in contact with drinking water; therefore complying with the New Zealand Building Code’s (G12) potability clause.
SafetyThe structural integrity of all Viking roofing products is enhanced through the installation of a timber sarking substrate onto which they are fastened. This durable and light-weight substrate, braces the entire building; negating the need for extra structural requirements for heavy-weight roofing materials. Viking CertainTeed shingles deliver a superior water tight finish as they are double-lapped and applied on top of a water-tight bituminous underlayment barrier.
SuperStrand Sarking SubstrateSuper-Strand Sarking is an H3.1 treated strand board designed and manufactured in New Zealand specifically as a substrate for asphalt shingles in New Zealand. Viking Roofspec’s pitched roofing systems installed over SuperStrand Sarking with a total weight of up to 25kg/m2 may be considered ‘light-weight’ for design purposes in accordance with NZS3604. SuperStrand Sarking’s benefits far outweigh alternative substrates. For more information visit: www.vikingroofspec.co.nz/products/pitchedroofs/superstrand-strandboard-substrate.
SustainabilityIs environmental sustainability important to you? It can be difficult determining which products are truly environmentally friendly.
CertainTeed shingles, are manufactured with what would otherwise be waste materials, being the slag residue from the oil refining process. Converting waste into a robust construction material, reduces land fill waste and greenhouse gas emissions.
Additionally, at the end of their serviceable life, these shingles can be overlaid, avoiding the dumping of inorganic materials.
Lighter colours in the CertainTeed range; many of which carry US Cool-Star energy ratings, reduce the energy required to cool a building.
Whether building a new home or replacing an old roof, choosing the right roofing solution is one of the most important decisions you can make.
Your roof provides protection from the weather, creating a safe home for you and your family…and it must stand the test of time.
Viking Roofspec offers a comprehensive roofing solution that will meet all your roofing requirements – CertainTeed Asphalt Shingles.

Healthy HomeRoof ventilation is an important element of a home’s design. Without effective ventilation, excess heat and humidity can render costly consequences, such as damp, mould and rot.
Your home will benefit from correct ventilation in both summer and winter.
The Viking CertainTeed system uses a proprietary ridge vent offering the most efficient low profile ventilation system in the market. Its external baffle design ‘pulls’ air out of the roof from both sides of the ridge.
Peace of mindViking CertainTeed shingles are BRANZ appraised and have been installed in New Zealand for the last 25 years and on over 190 million houses worldwide. BRANZ performs an independent assessment of the product which tests the quality of the tile and its ability to meet the New Zealand Building Code requirements.
Additionally, all Viking shingles have been assessed by the independent laboratory officially referference by the uncompromising American legal system – ‘Underwriters Laboratory’ (U.L.), assessing their collective resistance to: wind uplift; UV; and impact.
CraftsmanshipTo ensure that this critical quality control continues through to installation, Viking CertainTeed Shingles are installed by a nationwide network of Viking Approved Applicators selected and trained to install your roof to the highest of standards.
Warranties of SubstanceViking CertainTeed shingles offer a range of product warranties from 20 to 50 years.
Not all warranties are equal. Viking Roofspec’s warranties are backed by the Tiri Group, an established, reputable New Zealand company with an annual turnover exceeding $300 million. But despite this significant financial backing, more importantly, Tiri will honour its warranties in the unlikely event of a product issue.
Viking Full System WarrantyFor further peace of mind, certain Viking CertainTeed roofs may qualify for Viking’s comprehensive Full System Warranty, which covers both the materials and the installation in one document. SolutionThe home owners needed to re-roof with a durable system that would also add insulation and ventilation.
The BRANZ appraised Viking “Hatteras” shingle was selected, as the system is completely corrosion resistant.
It features deep shadow lines and a large tab profile, that provides a traditional slate like look. With a heavy duty construction, Hatteras is designed to handle the toughest weather extremes.
The shingles were fixed with stainless steel nails, while the strong plywood substrate would ensure the roof would not dent or be damaged
by foot traffic. Additionally, the aesthetic benefits of the Hatteras tile helped to create a defining look on the steep roof plane.
Viking Roofspec recommended that its Approved Applicator install the plywood substrate onto roof battens, which would provide airflow over the newly laid insulation and throughout the roof; thus maximising ventilation.
ResultThe home owners were thrilled with the result; commenting that out of all the renovations they had completed on their home, the roof was the one that had provided the most aesthetic impact.
With 40 years of warranted protection from a shingle installed only by an Approved Applicator and designed for maximum ventilation and extreme weather conditions, the owners now have a warm, dry and future-proofed home.
Appraisal No.276 [2012]
CHALLENGE: A MELLONS BAY RESIDENCE WITH AN OLD DECRAMASTIC TILE ROOF HAD LOST A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT OF ITS CHIPS, AND WAS SUFFERING FROM CORROSION. THE TILES WERE DENTED RESULTING IN AN UNSIGHTLY BUT WORSE STILL, LEAKING ROOF.
THE ROOF WAS SKILLION STYLE, WITH NO INSULATION OR VENTILATION WITHIN ITS TINY ROOF CAVITY RESULTING IN A COLD AND DAMP HOME. IT WAS ALSO IMPORTANT TO THEM THAT THE VERY STEEP ROOF HAD A DEFINING LOOK, AS IT WAS A MAJOR FEATURE OF THEIR HOME.
RE-ROOFING USING VIKING “HATTERAS” ASPHALT SHINGLES – MELLONS BAY, AUCKLAND
OF ALL THE RENOVATIONS, THE ROOF PROVIDED THE MOST AESTHETIC IMPACT.
