Panto Coming to Knebworth in DecemberWhat’s that you say? Knebworth doesn’t have a panto? Oh yes it does. Look not behind you but forward to December 9-11, when KATS will be presenting four performances of this Victorian pantomime, including a Saturday matinée, in Knebworth Village Hall. Who could resist the possibility of seeing a pantomime originally co-written by the splendidly-named Osburn Blackboem M’Gromagill? Mark the dates in your diary and watch this space for further details. (KATS is a drama group based in Knebworth with members mostly from Knebworth, Stevenage, Welwyn and Codicote.)

Hitchin Town Hall has been listed as a Grade II building by the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport. North Herts District Council (NHDC) received written notifi cation of the decision in a letter from English Heritage on Friday 15 October.

The town hall is currently the subject of two different proposals to provide a Museum on site whilst also retaining community space.

Cllr Tricia Cowley, NHDC’s portfolio holder for Community Engagement, said: “The letter we have received from English Heritage confi rms the decision to make the town hall a Grade II Listed Building. At the same time, initial advice from the Architectural Project Advisor looking at these proposals makes it clear that English Heritage do not expect such buildings to be ‘preserved in aspic’ and that it is important to maintain them in viable use.

“We believe that both of the current proposals for the town hall respect the main areas of signifi cance identifi ed in English Heritage’s report – the façade to Brand Street and the Lucas Room – and we have been advised that either scheme is potentially still viable, subject to achieving listed building consent, which is expected to add an approximate 12 weeks to the length of the work programme.”

A report providing an analysis of both proposals is currently being prepared for decision by Council on 11 November and this will now include consideration of the impact arising from the listing decision

WELLBEING

Marilyn has been writing interesting stories in Village Life on a regular basis. As a local therapist she offers help to people with all

sorts of problems.I asked Marilyn about the sort of things she treats,

other than the most obvious in stopping smoking, nail biting and weight loss.

Well, she said, there are many things you can improve about yourself without the need for worrying, or taking drugs and tablets. There really are techniques you can learn to do yourself to improve the way you handle what happens in your

life. It is quite easy yet so few people know where to look for help.

For instance worrying is a pointless exercise, yet so many people do it. When you worry you start digging yourself into a vicious circle which makes you worry all the more. Worrying leads to stress, stress tenses your body, over time serious diseases can eventuate. She works to help you break that loop so you come out relaxed, smiling and happy.

Marilyn continued, “People not only come to me with anxiety, stress and anger problems, some have pain, others depression. These are tough times, people need all the help they can get. Some are waiting medical help that never seems to come. Some have been told there is nothing much else to be done, go home and put up with it! ”

It was a bit like that for Sam. His back and leg were really bad. He was in a lot of pain and on medication for depression. It was debilitating for him, he wasn’t even able to work. A lot of work was done in the first session and he was able to drive to the second, 8 days later. The pain was minimal. He was delighted with progress and had starting applying for jobs.

Trudy had chronic fatigue and other issues. She had been having years of weekly counseling. After a month, and using emotional freedom technique with Marilyn, she had found a great new job for 3 days a week and was happy to discontinue therapy. She was really pleased with her progress.

Marilyn trained as a teacher and her life took her from New Zealand to Australia and from farming to office management and into business. Her accent is definitely from down under. She says her voice is the main tool in her work. It is this that provides the utter relaxation one experiences in hypnosiis

Let me give you a couple of examples, names are fi ctitious to protect confi dentiality.

John was in a panic because he was near the deadline for his masters dissertation and he was still procrastinating. He was quite passionate about his work in the film industry but while he had a pile of reading and notes, he had no real plan. We sat

WELLBEING

together and worked out what he needed to do. One of the things was to plan his time to write it. Next was an outline, we continued to work baby steps to get to the finished product.

Then, while he laid back relaxed in a daydreamy state, I taught him how to go into the zone, a total concentrated state, so he could work intensely and pull it altogether. In his imagination he was encouraged to see the process and then the final submission, a professional laid out folder and feel the pride at having completed it on time. I encouraged him to see his marks and how this result would improve his work opportunities.

A few months later John emailed me ‘I am so pleased with the results, I imagined 78% and got 76%, near enough. I really enjoyed writing it and I have been recommended for a distinction.’ ‘The best part is that I now have an interview with Disney and an opportunity to present this work to their board. Just as I imagined in my hypnotherapy session

This type of focus and confidence work can apply to sportsmen and women, too. Marilyn helps horse riders prepare for dressage events, frustrated golfers become calmer and more consistent, anxious new drivers calmly pass their driving test, musicians and presenters perform in public with accolades afterwards.

Petra came with a weight issue. Many people come with this problem, after all many of the population are either overweight or obsessed with how they look. Petra was like most, she was feeling fat and awful, fed up with being on and off all sorts of diets, and she was comfort eating. Chocolate and biscuits were her biggest downfall. If only she could stop she would feel better about herself but she was eating and putting on more weight, in a vicious circle.

During her first session she had hypnotherapy which was targeted at the chocolate. As with most people who come to see me she didn’t feel much different when she walked out, perhaps a little more upbeat. But it was later that she noticed how she wasn’t even interested in having any chocolate.

Not any at all, in fact she was refusing it. She was gobsmacked!

This continues to work for people for many years. They just lose the focus and desire for the unnecessary things and concentrate on being more healthy. Just as hypnotherapy turns smokers into non smokers, by losing the desire to smoke, they too become more healthy and energetic.

There is a story relating to Jean who had anxiety about finding a toilet. Many women do. She got gripping stomach pains in situations she was unused to being in. Her problem was her wedding. She didn’t want to have to rush off in her wedding dress every hour.

To overcome this she learned emotional freedom technique, EFT. Tapping her energy lines was a great way to get rid of her previous automatic behaviour and learn new ways of coping. Learning to relax, too, made such a difference. The wedding was a wonderful success and Jean barely thought of anything else but her happiness all day!

LOCAL BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

Dan has been playing the drums for over 10 years and is extremely passionate about drumming and music. During this time

he has performed in many groups and has a good grounding in many aspects of drumming, having continually had lessons himself. Dan feels it is a great idea to be able to pass on his knowledge and passion to others and hopefully inspire the next generation!

Dan provides professional drum tuition for beginners, of any age wanting to learn to play the drums. He is happy teaching both children and adults alike, “you’re never to old to pick up the sticks!” Lessons are taught on a one to one basis in a private drum room and on real drums. Each lesson is structured and handouts are provided, although they can be tailored to an individuals needs and musical tastes. Above all lessons are kept as relaxed and FUN a possible!

Topics covered include: Chart Reading, Hand/

Foot Technique, Independence, Moeller Technique, Time playing, Linear phrasing, Listening skills, Grooves & Styles.

There is a waiting room outside for parents although they can sit in on the lesson if they wish. It’s a great skill to be able to play a musical instrument, so whether it’s just for a bit of fun or could develop into something more serious, why not pick up some sticks and give the drums a go!

A Christmas gift of a flower course had a lasting effect on Janis O’Leary. It

inspired her to retrain as a florist at Jane Packer in London and to set up Daizy. Working from a barn Daizy now comprises a small friendly team designing flowers for all types of events ranging from weddings, funerals and celebrations to corporate contracts and one off events.

“It has been an exciting time” said Janis. “We started in 2008 with a gala performance at a theatre, went on to design for the launch of London Jewellery Week for Coutts Bank, have been official florist for Miss Hertfordshire for three years and I even made an orchid hat for Miss England for Ladies’ Day at Ascot. We never know what is coming in next, and we now have some really good clients with whom we have built a good relationship.

“We also love weddings” Janis said “and they work best with personal contact”. We offer an initial

consultation, but stay involved right through the process, as colours, numbers and details can change during that time. It makes for a very satisfying result.” Daizy keep up to date with trends on the

catwalk, flower demonstrations from top florists and reviewing new materials which are important to ensure that they offer new and innovative designs for their flowers as well as the tried and tested.

Want to try floristry for yourself? Try your hand making a Christmas wreath or table decoration at our popular Christmas workshops on the 10th and 11th December. All materials provided, together with home made cake and coffee and the cost is £50. You never know it may change your life too!

Ah! Firework night is upon us. This has got to be the end of gardening for this

year, surely? Wrong! Just when you thought it was safe thinking, “It’s the middle of winter for goodness sake. Doesn’t he ever give up?” Here are a few ideas of what you might like to turn your thoughts to this month.

Lets start with our old favourite, the lawn. It’s very likely that as November organises itself, your lawn will be getting quite wet and may, if it is sited in a low area, even waterlogged. I would certainly recommend that you don’t paddle on it any more than necessary - it will quickly turn to mud, not a pretty sight unless you are a Whipsnade hippo, of course. If it is a bit drier and mild enough, your lawn will keep growing albeit slower. Consider giving it a light cut. Keep the blades of your mower high and just take the top off the grass to keep it looking smart. Some areas of grass even in the same lawn may grow at different rates. This is highlighted if you just leave it to its own devices, so a quick trim keeps everything tidy and shipshape. Until the last of the leaves have fallen, keep

brushing them off the grass; they will only cause unsightly bare patches, which weeds love, as we know.

It is now time to start the planning process for next year. Ask yourself “Are there any plants that would be better somewhere else in the garden?” Now is the time to move them, whether they were crowding other plants where they were or they may be struggling to survive. Maybe, they were just not being shown off to their full potential where they were. Autumn, while plants are dormant, is an ideal time to relocate them in the garden, it allows them three months or so to settle in before growing begins again.

This is also the time to plan ahead. Were you happy with the beds last summer or is it now time to try something different with one or two of them - how about a few vegetables next year? Or maybe a few herbs planted in a bed near the kitchen door just to add a bit of flavour, freshness and colour to the dinner table.

This may also be the time when you think about revamping larger areas of your garden, the possibilities are pretty endless, remember, its your garden to

enjoy the way you want it, just because you may have inherited the previous owners ideas, it doesn’t mean that there is no other way to go. Use your imagination. What have you seen in other gardens that you would like to see in yours? What do YOU want from your garden? This is the time of year to have all these thoughts. Most things are possible. Go on, go for it!!

Right, lets get back to current jobs in the garden. There are bound to be some windy times ahead, so after its blown through, don’t forget to get out there and check your climbers to see if they’ve worked loose at all. It saves so much time later, keep tying them back now rather than wait, to end up having to do major reconstruction work to both plants and trellis in February or March next year.

Now, unlike me, I suppose most of you are looking forward to the annual scrimmage that is sometimes lovingly called Christmas shopping and being in the garden will seem quite dull by comparison. But for those of us who have seen the light, a bit of pottering has its merits, too. No stress, fresh air and a bit of peace and quiet. Now, how lovely is that?

A final word… hedgehogs! Just make sure the little chaps aren’t hiding in the bonfire before it all gets going on the 5th. They have enough on their plate, surviving, as it is. And don’t forget to keep feeding the birds, too.

Anyway I think that’s enough to be getting on with, don’t you?

PETS CORNER

Please mention The Hitchin Village Directory when responding to adverts 28

We have a fresh new monthly column starting this month written by Canine Behaviour and Training Expert Adem

Fehmi. Adem runs his own company providing training and support to dog owners and will be giving us some tips on various techniques over the coming months.

This month we look at Heelwork. With a puppy at first slowly introduce the collar

and lead (a light weight lead and collar is best).Start your heelwork training in a quite area-

Remember no dog is born understanding heel, as an owner you must teach the dog what heel exactly means.

Be sure to use an appropriate lead, one which is suitable for your particular dog.

Start you training with the dog on the handlers left and use right turns, encouraging your dog into the heel position before praising enthusiastically with food, affection or play.

As training develops use small left hand circles

again with the dog on the handlers left. Increase the size of the left hand circles as the dog becomes more consistent.

As the dog becomes more consistent and comfortable with the heel position use right hand circles, this will give the dog a chance to be on the handlers outside.

Eventually the handler can break from the circles and walk in a straight line with the dog at heel.

ON YOUR TRAVELS

The problem with visiting New York is knowing where to begin, but even

if you don’t immediately rush off to view the world-famous sights and icons of this most dynamic of cities, just being there is enough!

New York City is made up of five boroughs - Staten Island, The Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan, but many visitors never leave Manhattan. There is a lot packed into this tiny area: the 24-hour pasta restaurants of Little Italy and the bustling sidewalks of Chinatown, the jazz clubs of Greenwich Village and the theatres of Broadway; and of course the iconic sights of the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building

and Times Square.New York has been described as

the best three-day city in the world, and I would definitely agree. If you are a shopaholic you can’t go wrong with the world famous Macy’s, Saks on 5th Avenue and Bloomingdales to name a few and if you are after some serious jewellery I would recommend a visit to Tiffany’s!

If culture is more your thing then New York is home to many museums including the Guggenheim Museum which is home to famous pieces of art from Cézanne to Picasso and the Museum of Modern Art which owns the most important collection of modern art in the USA including works by Monet,

Van Gogh, Matisse, Picasso, Max Beckman, Ansel Adams, and Kiki Smith. St Patricks Cathedral is a fine example of Gothic architecture and to most New Yorkers and tourists; it is most valued for its peace and tranquillity.

One of New York’s most famous and best loved landmarks, Grand Central Station was opened in 1913 opposite Rockefeller Centre. It is the world’s largest train station in terms of platforms, with 44. The Terminal houses five good restaurants, twenty value and lunch time eateries, and about fifty specialty shops. The 12,000 sq ft Vanderbilt Hall regularly houses public events. Don’t miss the one-hour guided tour; book

several weeks ahead in peak season to avoid disappointment. Grand Central sees around 250,000 commuters per day, but over 500,000 visitors.

The World Trade Centre - Ground Zero, this 16-acre work site that has emerged from the rubble of the twin towers has come to symbolise the dreadful events of September 11, 2001 when almost 3,000 people lost their lives. The 1,350ft (411m) World Trade Centre towers were the tallest buildings in New York and symbols of the city’s skyline. Millions now come to pay tribute at the site and witness the devastation from one of the viewing sites.

A free attraction and a must do

is the Staten Island ferry. The ferry from Battery Park to Staten Island and back is a great way to see the Lower Manhattan skyline and Hudson River life while resting your feet. The ferry also skirts the Statue of Liberty affording decent views of this iconic structure. Most tourists stay onboard for the return leg, but it’s worth hoping off and exploring a bit of Staten Island while you’re there. The ferry leaves every 30 minutes and takes 25 minutes each way.

Anyone who has ever watched a movie set in New York will feel at home with the recognisable sights, whether looking out over the New York skyline from the Empire State Building, reading billboards in

Times Square, or strolling through Central Park. Visit the boroughs, watch a show on Broadway, admire the animals in the Central Park Zoo, look out for celebrities waving from the windows of TRL in Times Square, or simply people-watch while sipping a coffee at a French Bistro in Soho, you will never be bored in the Big Apple.

Weekend breaks start from as little as £600 based on 3 nights flying with Virgin Atlantic from Heathrow, travelling in Jan 2011. (2 people sharing) So go on visit the Big Apple!
