You may have noticed the new evacuation gathering spot signs near your building. In the fall,

FGH will conduct fire drills, and these will continue to take place

once each semester. Please locate the evacuation spot nearest you, and we will provide further in-

structions as the time approaches for our fall drill.

Farmer’s Market On Wednesday, July 27th, from 10:30 am to 3:00 pm, we will be taking our first trip to the amazing Buford Highway Farmer’s Market! This trip is hosted by Calandra, the Area 4 resident manager, and we have heard reports that many items may be a greater bargain than other nearby farmers’ markets. If you would like to sign up for this trip, please e-mail Calandra at area4@uga.edu no later than Monday, July 25th. Use this as a great opportunity to get out of Athens for the day and experience some great shopping!

According to the market’s website, the Buford Highway market has been around for over 25

years and has food offerings that “include foods from Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, West Africa, Japan, China, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, Eastern Europe and more. You’ll find more ethnic food varieties under one roof than any other single-location grocery store in Atlanta.”

From the ISL website: The ISL Office serves as an Archway to the World and an Archway to UGA for both international and U.S. students attending the University. International Student Orientation:

International Student Orientation this year will be from August 1 – August 5, 2011, with additional social events on August 6th and August 7th. We are hosting a number of informative and important sessions during the week including Social Security, housing, and registration information. We strongly recommend that all new and transfer international students attend this orientation program. Please note that there is a $15 registration fee for this program. Students may register for orientation

Summer brings opportunities to enjoy the outdoors, which often results in more sun exposure. One in five people in the Unit-ed States, and one in three in the Sunbelt States, will develop cancer in his or her lifetime. A vast majority of the more than 1 million cases of non-melanoma skin cancer diagnosed yearly in the United States are considered to be related to sun exposure. Please be safe this summer by taking the following precautions to pro-tect yourself against sun rays and skin cancer: Try to avoid the sun during its strong-est hours, between 10am and 4pm. Enjoy the majority of your outdoor activities earlier or later in the day.

Cover up! Wear a hat and sunglasses to protect your face and eyes from the rays. Wear sunscreen every day, even if you are not going to be outside for a long period of time or it appears cloudy! Sunlight exposure takes place through the clouds. Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before going outside and reapply throughout the day. Use an SPF of at least 15. Any less will not protect you fully. Make sure it protects against both UVA and UVB rays.

Get your skin checked for cancer regularly by a doctor. Make sure you note any unusual changes in colors or sizes on your skin. Most skin cancers are highly curable if caught early, but melanoma, which can start as early as adolescence, is a more dangerous form of the disease.

Take a break from the heat and visit UGA’s Legion Pool this summer! Through July 31st the pool is open from 11:30am to 7:00pm, and from August 1-11 the pool is open from 2:00pm to 7:00pm. UGA student can be admitted for only $3.50, children for $3, and guests for $4.50. The pool is huge and there is plenty of space on the deck to enjoy a good book and get some sun. Farmer’s Market Want to enjoy fresh food this summer? The Athens Farmer’s Market is located at the Bishop Park Picnic Pavilion. Their food is grown on their own soil and they have crafts, music, and memories on Saturday mornings from 8am-1pm during the summer months.

Bear Hollow Trail Enjoy some fun with your family, or just spend an afternoon away from campus and city-life by taking a walk along the Bear Hollow Wildlife Trail at Memorial Park. This zoo is host to bears, bobcats, otters, and other wildlife. Trails, picnic areas, playground equipment, and a lake are also available to enjoy. Maintenance Supervisor

P-building: Construction is going on throughout the building. This building is supposed to be ready August 1st for move in, which means that construction has to be complete around the middle of July. (Looking Good)

We will have around 200 apartments mov-ing out this summer and we are getting busy painting, cleaning and repairing appliances. 74 apartments have already moved out.

We will replace all of the refrigerators in E-building later this summer and we will give you plenty of notice before it happens.

Q-building will come off line for renovation around the first or second week in August.

The pest control company has completed baiting all apartments for roaches. They use a paste that looks like peanut butter and they place it under cabinets and behind the re-frigerators and stoves. This should reduce the amount of pest that you will have in

your apartments.

When you use the laundries and you have trouble with a machine please e-mail or call in a work order, just as you would with your apartment. We need to know which laundry and which machine is not working.

Please do not tamper with the smoke detectors in your apartment. This is the first warning that you will get in case there is a fire in your apartment. If you disable the head and there is a fire not only are you endangering yourself but everyone in your building. Call the F&GH office during the day and the Resident Manager on duty at night to silence the head if you accidental-ly set it off while cooking.

Pest Control: Peachtree Pest Control comes to Family Housing every Wednes-day to treat apartments. Please have your work orders in before Wednesdays of each week or you will have to wait until the following week.

*** Pest Control personnel have told me that roaches and other pest hate clean cool apartments. To keep pest down remove your trash daily and keep your food such as cereal, rice, breads in seal-able containers. Wipe down your ranges and counter tops after cooking.
