2019 Following our first foray into the South West in Bloom competition, a meeting is to take place at the Bible Christian Centre on 15 January 2019 at 7.00pm to discuss next year’s entry. CAROL SINGING

As in previous years, a group from Haselbury Parish Church will be singing carols round the village on three

nights before Christmas.

We’ll set off from the crossroads at 6 p.m and head West on Monday 17th

North on Wednesday 19th East on Friday 21st

finishing, hopefully, with a hot drink after an hour or so.

Do listen out for us and join in - we shan’t be collecting money!

Better still, come and sing with us at 6 o’clock on any day.

Andrew Daynes

What goes up when the rain comes down? An umbrella.

Into every life some rain must fall. Usually when your car windows are down.

Why is it that rain drops but snow falls?

I’d cross the hottest desert,

I’d swim the deepest sea,

I’d climb the highest mountain,

But I can’t come over tonight because it’s raining.

If you asked me what my favourite time of year was, I would say Advent,

which is the four weeks leading up to Christmas. Like Lent, it is understood

to be a time of preparation, this time for the great celebrations surrounding the

birth of Jesus. It is a time to take stock, to reflect. The readings through the Advent

Season call us to consider where we find meaning, peace and happiness in our lives.

We hear words from the prophets; we meet the fiery figure of John the Baptist calling

from the wilderness and we hear the promise of new beginnings with the coming birth

of the Christ child. Advent invites us not just to reflect, but to respond. We are called to

find our place in this story and to have our lives shaped by the one who came to show us

where we are to find those elusive qualities in our lives.

When Christmas arrives, we will hear told of a long harsh journey, an unpromising

beginning, which takes place under the shadow of an imperial power that itself promises

peace and security. Marginal people come from the hills to welcome this child born in

an obscure place, their hearts filled with wonder, hope and joy. If we stay with the story

long enough, we will meet the wise men in their search for the one who is to be King

and a wicked King whose power is under threat and who will go to any lengths to hold

on to power. When New Year comes, if we haven’t already put the story back in its box

for another year, we meet an old man and woman whose faithful search is fulfilled and

dreams are met, when they meet the young infant with her mother.

Christmas comes again in the middle of the darkest time of the year, with its gift of hope

and possibility, always in the shadow of empire, always giving a glimpse of how things

could be, always inviting us to consider what gives us meaning and security in our lives,

always calling us away from the destructive impulses and violence that drive us and the

world around us.

After so many tellings, can we still hear the story again, still open to its possibilities,

still ready to respond to its invitation - to come with open hands and hearts ready to be

touched?

Wishing you every blessing for the Christmas season and the New Year,

Jonathan Morris Vicar in Haselbury Misterton and North Perrott.

Members’ competition: Pretty parcel

2019:

Wednesday 2nd January at 7.30 pm

Social time: Beetle Drive

Members’ competition: New Year’s Resolution

Meetings are held at the Bible Christian Centre, Haselbury

Members are reminded to bring a tea-plate of food for the party table. The pretty

parcels will go to the Lord’s Larder in Yeovil, not to a Women’s Refuge, so please

label them underneath with the contents. The wrapping can be as fancy as you like,

but please keep the contents basic and plain: toothpaste, shower gel, hand soap/

wash, toilet rolls, box of biscuits – chocolate fingers very welcome – tea bags, etc.

The January meeting will be a social meeting, with a beetle drive. Please make two

New Year’s resolutions (1) something you’re happy to share with members and (2)

to attend the monthly meetings regularly in 2019.

At the November meeting, Barbara Gilbert told members about three of her Royal

Naval Air Service heroes of the First World War, and Worthington, the much loved

cat at Polegate Airship Station.

If you’re interested in any aspect of the WI, please come along to a meeting or get

in touch.

Dark Nights

With winter upon us it is now very gloomy from 4 o’clock and positively black by 5

so it is incumbent upon us all to make drivers lives a little easier, and perhaps in the

process save ourselves from an accident, by wearing clothes that show up in these

conditions. We do not all have hi-vis jackets but going about dressed in dark

clothes is a little foolhardy in an area not blessed with street lighting.

For safety sake BE SEEN.

God with us

Well, we are into the frantic pressie-buying month of December now. The American ‘Black Friday’ tradition appears to be firmly a part of our own pattern and has brought the search for the perfect Christmas present yet earlier in our calendar. Parish and school Christmas Fayres offer us home-made, Fairtrade, recycled and singular alternatives. And increasingly the inequalities within our economy become more apparent as people risk debt to bring a smile to their child’s face. When I was a parish priest we found that many of our single parents felt trapped by the pressure of keeping up with those around them. We tried to introduce a maximum spend for all our congregational and family present buying in order to bring some parity. It wasn’t easy! I’m reminded at this time of year of the line that we are seeing more frequently, accompanying invitations to weddings and Birthday parties: ‘No presents required, just your presence!’ It makes me think about what Christmas really means. During this time of preparation and waiting for the big day to arrive, many of us will sing the words of that Advent hymn, ‘O come, O come, Emmanuel’, a 12th century hymn that invites God to fulfil his prophecy to his people. Will we really take in those words? ‘Emmanuel’ means ‘God with us’, such an important and comforting phrase in these times of uncertainty and anxiety, as we wonder what the new year will bring. Christmas we know is a time when people can feel lonely, disappointed, stressed. There are reputedly more suicides and marriage breakdowns during the course of this holiday period. One of the best Christmas presents we can offer then must surely be that of hospitality, a listening ear and simply our ‘presence’ among those who feel forgotten, rejected or overlooked. In so doing we will find God’s own present to us this Christmas, as in any and all other Christmases, His presence. The God to whom “every animal of the forest and the cattle on a thousand hills, belongs” (Psalm 50) has given us the best present of all - He is with us.

North Perrott & Haselbury Gardening Club.

The Annual General Meeting was held on the 20th November and in line

with precedent was completed in quick time, not a record but good

nonetheless.

The existing Officers, Ian Bevan-Mogg, Chairman, Peter Bland, Vice Chairman, Bryan

Atherton, Secretary, and Mike Watkins, Treasurer, were re-elected with Lucinda Bagley

and Barbara Spence as Committee members.

In his Report the Chairman thanked all those who had assisted with the smooth running of

the Club during the last year, for the coffee morning, the trip to Chalfield Manor and The

Courts, the Display Day, the annual dinner and of course al those who provided the ready

help with coffee etc. .at meetings.

The Treasurer reported that with the rising cost of speakers and a reduced income from

the Display Day, due, probably, to the effect of extreme heat in the earlier months, the

Club made a small loss in the year but in the light of the balances held felt there was no

need to consider a change to the subscription of £5 pa. Later confirmed by the meeting.

The AGM completed the evening was then continued with a quiz and wine & cheese.

PLEASE NOTE THE EARLIER DATE of the 11th for the December meeting when

Michael Jordan (I don’t think it’s the famous basketball player) will talk on Christmas

Themed Plants of Mystery and Magic.

New members and visitors always welcome, for information call;- Mike on 01460 75232

Our Treasurer is standing down after many years’

there would be lots of help and support to get you

into the swing of things.

If it is a contribution you think you could make, then

do please get in touch with myself or one of the

Churchwardens.

There is no expectation that you would have to come

to Church although you would of course

be welcome!

With best wishes

Haselbury Plucknett CE First School It has been a very exciting term at Haselbury Plucknett First School and Pre-School. Since joining the school in September, I feel very fortunate to be leading the school and pre-school, which clearly have a special place in the heart of the community. The children have been progressing well and have developed so many new skills. We have had a pirate day, children sung in the church at Harvest Festival and also they have represented the school in sports competitions. We continue to be incredibly proud of our pupils at these events, not only for their sportsmanship, but also their values, steeped in local history. Our schools then came together again to learn more about twine and how it was used in crafts and daily life. One thing that has surprised me since joining this community and warmed my heart, are the number of people who volunteer and support the school. We are incredibly appreciative of our volunteers from the community, as they have a tremendous impact on learning and enhance some of the opportunities we can give our children. We always welcome support and ideas, so if you would like to offer time to the school or pre-school, either through craft, reading or any other hidden talents that lie in our community, please contact Mrs Jay at the school office on 01460 72833, we would love to hear from you. Upcoming dates: Open Day at the school and preschool on the 4th of December 9:15am-11:45am and 1:30pm-2:30pm. Haselbury First School and Preschool Nativity Tuesday 18th December 2.00pmand 6pm. 1914-1918 Remembered

The Centenary of the end of WW1 was remembered in Haselbury with a

traditional Remembrance Sunday Service, which started at the memorial before

progressing into the Church.

In addition, to mark the 100 year anniversary, there was an evening of

commemoration, some called it a concert, but the correct terminology is

unimportant, what was evident from those who attended was the extra

understanding they had of the events of that time.

The evening consisted of a wide range of Music and Readings and including

community singing of songs from the era. The readings included poems from a

variety of sources including Wilfred Owen, Rupert Brooke and Siegfried Sassoon,

an extract from Warhorse and snippets from Wipers Times.

There were also pieces about Woman’s role in the war-and encompassed the

shameful response of Lt Gen Sir Arthur Sloggett to Dr Elsie Inglis, when she

offered to take a medical team to support the British troops. “My good lady, go

home and sit still. We don’t want any petticoats here.” The Belgians were pleased

to accept her offer!

The evening was a success and ended with refreshments including some cakes made

to war time recipes.

Everyone who attended enjoyed the experience and, on their behalf, I would like to

thank all those who organised and took part in this event. A bonus was the £333

collected for Children in Need.

Alcohol is not the answer, it just makes you forget the question.

1. Cats do what they want, when they want.

2. They rarely listen to you.

3. They’re totally unpredictable.

4. They whine when they are not happy.

5. When you want to play they want to be left alone.

6. When you want to be alone, they want to play.

7. They expect you to cater to their every whim.

8. They’re moody.

9. They leave their hair everywhere.

10. They drive you nuts.

Conclusion; cats are small women in fur coats.
