Camphill Pioneers

On March 20, 2009, at the Camphill Association of North America meeting in Camphill Copake, the Association took an unusual step in presenting the Camphill Lifetime Achievement Award to more than the traditional single recipient. This time, it honored the many pioneers whose work began and supported Camphill Village, the first Camphill center in North America, in its first five years.

Recipients were celebrated with a dinner in the Village

Green Café. Then, at a very meaningful awards ceremony in Fountain Hall, they were individually presented with a framed award and a red rose.

As we congratulate our pioneers and their families, we extend our deepest gratitude for the contribution each individual has made to Camphill Village, which has made this vital community what it is today. You deserve this special honor!

Get Your Motor Running! In the Name of Alton Marshall, New Van Drives Physically - Challenged Villagers to Greater ExperiencesLast fall, the May and Samuel Rudin Family Foundation and Jack Rudin gave $40,000 to Camphill Village in memory of Alton Marshall for a wheelchair-accessible van. The Village had long sought funds for this van, knowing it would provide benefits well beyond transport. Now, our wheelchair-bound villagers can join outings in the surrounding community and participate fully in enriching activities and events. We thank the Foundation and Mr. Rudin for this generous gift to the Village. That it was given in Alton’s name is especially meaningful to us.

Development Update Working Hard for Camphill’s Future

• In FY 2008-9, we received over $1,802,000 of our $1,840,000 goal – no small feat in these times. All who have supported our work in this past year have our heartfelt appreciation.

• The philanthropic audit (one-third supported by the Dyson Foundation) strongly suggested we hire a full-time development director, which we are now seeking. Acting Director John Baring will continue to be a liaison between Development and the Village.

• Preparation for the 9th Triennial Concert to benefit the North American Camphill communities is underway for October 6th at NYC’s Rose Hall at Jazz at Lincoln Center. Camphill Village is partnering with other Camphill communities to invite sponsors for this gala event (www.camphillconcert.org).

• As our villagers age, we need to interest a new generation of young people – like villagers’ siblings and their friends – in the life of the Village. If you’d like to spon-sor an event to let your friends, family and colleagues know about us, please let us know and we will gladly help!

Thank you to all our supporters! We are grateful beyond mere words for your kind- ness and generosity, and we hope you will see the results of your help on the pages that follow. The Village View has a new format now – a direct reflection of our need to cut costs. We hope this format will make it even easier for you to stay in the loop.

Camphill Village depends on charitable contributions of all sizes

from donors every year. Entitlements for people with disabilities

and other government funds meet just over half of our operating

costs. We appreciate your interest and support.

Camphillers Speak! The Presidential Inauguration

Come On Over! Russet and Brookledge Houses Near Completion with Summer Move-In Goal

If you’ve been to Russet and Brookledge houses in the past, you won’t believe your eyes when you next return! While work is still in progress at both structures, each house has already been expanded significantly.

Upon completion, each will open its doors to families and villagers who

will live in greater comfort and space, with updated amenities. Brookledge is closer to completion than Russet, but it is exciting to see both houses take their new forms. Work is scheduled to be completed in July, somewhat dependent upon the weather this spring.

On January 20th, as in many places around the nation, Camphill Village came together to celebrate the presidential inauguration and watched the festivities and speeches on a big screen in Fountain Hall. It was a moving experience to watch history-in-the-making together — and one not soon forgotten. We asked individual villagers what they thought of the inauguration and of President Obama, and here’s what they had to say (clockwise, top to bottom):

Kelly McCaughan “I liked the inauguration, but thought it was quite long. So far, I think Obama is fair.”

Vera Blanchfield “It’s kind of annoying because I voted for someone else and now I have to hear about him most of the time.”

Katie Schreckinger “We have never seen the inauguration before. This was my first experience watching it. He is a cool guy and a good guy.”

Beth Stevens “I think it’s very alright that Obama is from Chicago and so am I.”

Christopher Duffy “It was special to see the first black president being sworn in and see Bush give his regards to Obama as he was leaving. It was also nice to know that there’s a First Grandmother living in the White House, for the first time in history.”

Vicky Fliesler said she liked it.

Camphill Village USA Annual MeetingMeets for the first time before the Village

To know Camphill, you must go there. I did. I found it beautiful, cared for with affection and intelligence. This is a board unlike any other on which I have served or about which I have heard. It has those qualities I have found in the Village itself…there is a sense of common purpose in the board which is unlike any I have ever experienced.

In my 25 years, there has been a gradual turnover of members. Somehow we always seem to have among us a variety of backgrounds and temperaments. Each has had a devotion to Camphill which can even be called passionate. Our discussions can be heated, but are remarkably free of anger. There is constant interaction among perspectives and talents. A collective wisdom has often emerged and led us into new

directions. The most striking of these in recent years have been the Hudson Houses and our efforts to apply Camphill principles to creating living arrangements for all people as they age, avoiding the isolation and inactivity which have characterized such efforts in the past. Ten years ago, it was Kaspar and Ita Wegman [the care houses]. Today it is the Elder Care Initiative. Whenever I come to Camphill — to a meeting or just to be here — I leave renewed and embraced…. It is one of the most engaging, affectionate associations in my life — with a remarkable group of people who share a powerful, irresistible respect and appreciation for every individual, aversion to violence, a sense of beauty and humor. And all on a wonderfully human scale, with all of its endearing imperfections.

On March 28th, CVUSA’s Annual Meeting met for the first time before co-workers and villagers. Attendees also heard from Dr. Alan Miller, our longtime friend and former board president, and – of fortunate coin-cidence for Camphill — one of the founding commissioners of the New York State Office of Mental Retarda-tion and Developmental Disabilities. Dr. Miller has been a tremendous resource for us over many years. The following highlights of his words shed light and warmth, the lingering embers of which reinforce our mission:

New & Renewed LifeSince the last Village View, new life has graced the Village — Jamison (shown with mother Rosie and Louis Reich) was born to Rosie and Lee Edwards in Orchard; newborn lambs, piglets and calves arrived; and the Healing Plant Garden blooms again.

These fresh faces and bright blossoms of nature inspire hope and remind us of renewed opportu-nity to make a difference in the world around us.

Thank You for Honoring Their Memory (4/1/08-3/31/09)

Spring at Camphill Village This curly willow branch, adorned with decorated Easter eggs, ushers in spring at the Tamarack House table. Camphill Village households traditionally hang elaborate natural branches supporting artfully designed eggs over their dining tables for Easter.

The branches remain in colorful celebration of the season, which inspires a creative and uplifting atmosphere at meals during a particularly beautiful time in the Village.

Charlie was our oldest villager. He died in Kaspar house in August 2008. After incurring a brain injury at birth in Larchmont, NY, Charlie polished grills at his dad’s Rolls Royce showroom. He attended two schools before coming to Camphill in the summer of 1969. A debonair gentleman, Charlie was the epitome of the country squire, walking about the Village in his white dress shirt and gold tie. With a raspy voice and characteristically mischievous twinkle in his blue eyes, he exuded warmth. He had an affinity for fine cars and beautiful women — preferably both at the same time. Charlie worked on the Village farm in early years, and enjoyed visiting the Wood Workshop, Bakery and Bluestone office when semi-retired. He was celebrated as “Mayor of Camphill” when he turned 70, but managed to surpass the milestones of 80 and 90 years of age. He’d hold court in Kaspar’s living room, listening

to music — H.M.S. Pinafore, in particular. After his funeral service at Fountain Hall, Charlie was driven to his resting place in the style to which he was accustomed — in a polished car, with beautiful women and good friends waving him goodbye.

“I believe we are led through life by a combination of the earthly circumstances and heavenly influences of which we are not always aware.” This is how Reg Bould looked back at his life. He was born in Stoke-On-Trent, England, where crafts were a way of life. His beloved mother led by the creed “Bear ye one another’s burdens.” This motto resonated with Reg, perhaps never more than when he

met Molly Horton as a teenager, heard her tell the poignant story of her life and vowed to marry her so she would never suffer again. Ensuing experiences shaped him: his faith; being inspired to do woodwork; meeting Karl König; joining Camphill in Scotland, Norway and other communities; his wonderful children; Molly’s death in 1975; and coming to Camphill Copake and marrying Christina

Sherman. Reg worked in stained glass and with wood while here at Camphill, but is most lovingly recalled as a fantastic storyteller, enthusiastic thespian, and skilled craftsman, who was generous of soul, spirit, talent, humor and wisdom.

Memorial Day Weekend

Start-of-Summer Baseball Game Is a Hit!A rousing baseball game had villagers and co-workers teaming up on the most beauti-ful day of the year. Energy was high, and the cheering crowd on the hill made sure it stayed that way. The game was won by only one run. It was so much fun, we don’t even remember which team clinched the victory!Joseph Papas is at the ready as Dylan Kraus takes

a swing; Oliver Dawdy does a victory dance.
