USA TODAY COACHES POLL.

A Productive Start

The last time Villanova started a pair of fresh-men in a regular season opener, Jay Wright was in his second season as head coach. Allan Ray and Randy Foye were the newcomers back in 2002.

Seventeen years later rookies Jeremiah Rob-inson-Earl and Justin Moore got the nod and helped fuel a first half burst that carried Vil-lanova to a 97-54 victory over Army Tuesday night at Finneran Pavilion.

Ray, a 2006 All-American, had a front row seat as Robinson-Earl became the first true freshman in Wright’s 19 seasons to record a triple double (24 points, 13 rebounds). Moore sank a pair of early 3-pointers and ended the evening with eight points and four assists while sophomore Saddiq Bey contributed 22 points, five rebounds and two steals in the win. Sophomore Cole Swider supplied 18 points off the Nova bench.

The Wildcats held Army to 20-of-46 shooting on the night (.281), including 7-of-30 (.233) from beyond the arc and controlled the glass by a 54-26 count.

“We knew that if we didn’t come and play hard, they can run at you,” stated Wright. “They’re tough. When they get it going up and down, they can really wear you out. I thought we did a really good job of running with them, getting back on defense. We had our lapses and have a lot to improve on but it was a good start for us.”

A 13-0 run sparked by a pair of Maryland na-tives helped kick start the Wildcats’ offense. Bey of Largo, Md., had seven points and Moore of Fort Washington, Md., six – on con-secutive 3-pointers – to help Villanova grab a 15-4 lead over the Black Knights at the 15:32 mark of the first period.

Swider entered the game and promptly gave the ‘Cats another boost. The Portsmouth, R.I. native scored eight points, including a pair of deep balls, to help Villanova extend its advan-tage to 26-7 after 8:16 of action at the Finn.

Aside from the explosive offense, perhaps more impressive was the effort at the other end. Army didn’t reach double figures in points until more than 14 minutes had been played and misfired on its first nine attempts from beyond the 3-point arc. Villanova

pushed its lead to 41-12 with 4:54 left on the first half clock.

Robinson-Earl was a presence throughout, helping VU take a 49-26 lead into the locker room at the half.

The Black Knights narrowed the gap to 21 points early in the period but Villanova had an answer each time Army gained momen-tum. Robinson-Earl and Bey were at the forefront with an assist from junior Collin Gillespie, who contributed all 11 of his points in the second half.

The final count was 97-54.

“I thought our guys did a good job playing their first game at home,” stated Wright. “Getting Collin Gillespie back out on the floor was big for us. He missed our exhibition game and scrimmage. He didn’t look great, but it was so good to get him out on the floor. Our depth was pretty good tonight.

“We still have a lot of room for improvement. We were kind of sloppy with the ball with 17 turnovers. We’ll work on that. We knew we would have things we’d have to work on after this. But this was good for us.”

The 2019-20 season – Villanova’s 100th college basketball campaign – is presented by Hart-ford Funds and Coca-Cola.

GAME 2: VILLANOVA (1-0, 0-0 BIG EAST) VS OHIO STATE (2-0, 0-0 BIG TEN)

Bey Watch

He was a late addition to Villanova’s Class of 2022, announc-ing his intention to don the Blue and White in June 2018 after originally committing to North Carolina State. But no Wildcats’ newcomer was more impactful in 2018-19 the the forward from Largo, Md.

Bey was named to the BIG EAST All-Freshman team after av-eraging 8.2 points, 5.1 rebounds and connecting on .374 of his attempts from beyond the 3-point arc.

This year, the 6-8 forward quickly made his presence known against Army West Point. In 24:02 of game action, Bey connect-ed on 9-of-14 field goal attempts for 22 points. In addition he conttributed five rebounds, two steals and an assist with zero turnovers. His plus/minus rating was +34.

When Bey was asked in the post-game press conference why he had changed uniform numbers - from 15 to 41 - he stated that he wanted to honor his mother, who wore No. 41 during her playing days.

Stalwarts to Replace

Though it returns three members of the 2018-19 starting lineup that closed the campaign - Saddiq Bey, Collin Gillespie and Jer-maine Samuels - the two holes Villanova must fill are significant ones.

Phil Booth played more games in the Blue and White (148) than anyone in program history. He was a first team All-BIG EAST selection last season and took home the Dave Gavitt Award as the BIG EAST Tournament Most Outstanding Player.

Eric Paschall, meanwhile, was also a first team All-BIG EAST se-lection and helped Booth lead the Wildcats last season. Together the pair combined for 35.1 points and 10.0 rebounds per game.

“After the Penn game last year (Dec. 11), we had a decision to make,” stated Wright. “Early in the year we had been trying to play the way we had before. We were playing a lot of the young guys. We decided that the team’s best chance to reach its poten-tial was to run things through Phil and Eric.

“We had some success because they both had great senior years. I think they gave us the advantage over a lot of other teams in our league who didn’t have two experienced guys like that. Well, this year we’re the young group and those other teams bring back experienced guys.”

On Ohio

Though this is Villanova’s first stop in Columbus, it has enjoyed some success in other Ohio cities. The 1985 NCAA champion-ship team began its magical March run with victories in Day-ton over the host Flyers and No. 1 seed Michigan. In 1988, the Wildcats earned a pair of NCAA Tournament victories over Arkansas and Illinois in Cincinnati.

NEWS AND NOTES

BIG EAST Wins

Now in his 19th season at Villanova, head coach Jay Wright has posted 221 BIG EAST victories - 200 in regular season play and 21 in the BIG EAST Tournament. That ranks fourth all-time in conference annals, trailing Jim Boeheim (416), Jim Calhoun (309) and John Thompson (231) in wins.

In fact, three of the top 11 winningest coaches in BIG EAST his-tory have coached the ‘Cats. Rollie Massimino’s 123 wins rank 10th while Steve Lappas’ 97 rank 11th.

Support From the Sophomores

Sophomores Cole Swider and Brandon Slater both played key reserve roles in the opening night win over Army.

Swider, a native of Portsmouth, R.I., who saw his 2018-19 campaign disrupted by a fractured bone in his hand, stepped forward to supply career highs in points (18) and rebounds (six) in 21:59. The 6-9 forward was 6-of-9 from the field, including 4-of-6 from beyond the 3-point arc.

Slater, a product of Centreville, Va., brought engery and intan-gibles to the court in his 19:55 minutes. The 6-7 forward deliv-ered four points, five rebounds and three assists with just one turnover on his personal ledger.

Six Newcomers Highlight 2019-20 Roster

Villanova has six new faces on its 2019-20 roster, including five freshmen and a transfer student, Caleb Daniels, who will sit out the 2019-20 cam-paign per NCAA rules.

“This is as well-rounded a class as we’ve had,” stated Villanova head coach Jay Wright.

Guard Bryan Antoine is a product of the Ranney School (N.J.) who was selected as a McDonald’s All-American and was ranked at No. 15 in the prep class of 2019 by espn.com. His college debut has been delayed as he continues to recover from right shoulder surgery conducted on May 31.

Guard Chris Arcidiacono signed with the Wildcats in April after a stellar post-graduate season at the Perkiomen School. The 6-5 guard from Lang-horne, Pa., is the younger brother of Wildcats legend Ryan Arcidiacono, now of the Chicago Bulls.

Eric Dixon is a 6-8 forward who was named Pennsylvania Player of the Year as a senior at Abington High School. Dixon was listed at No. 76 in the espn.com Top 100 for 2019.

Justin Moore (No. 54 in the ESPN Top 100) was selected to the 2019 Nike Hoops Summit after a stellar career at DeMatha High School.

Jeremiah Robinson-Earl (No. 14 by espn.com) began his prep career at Bishop Miege High School in Kansas before moving to IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., where he was selected to the McDonald’s All-American. Robinson-Earl also helped lead Team USA to a gold medal at the U19 World Cup last summer.

Daniels played two seasons at Tulane University before electing to transfer to Villanova.

Finn Facts

The Wildcats carry a streak of 184 consecutive regular season sellouts in the Fin-neran Pavilion and a lifetime mark of 302-63. Villanova sported an 8-2 record in its newly renovated home in 2018-19.

Villanova Athletics partnered with EwingCole, an award-winning architecture and engineering firm based in Philadelphia, to transform the Pavilion from a multi-purpose and recreational facility into a world-class basketball-centric arena. The renovation celebrates the uniqueness of the original arena – which opened on Feb. 1, 1986 – while creating an unmatched Division I basketball experience for Villanova student-athletes and fans. The upgrades include McMahon Way, an outdoor plaza for pre-game and post-game activities; a relocated main entrance that will serve as a gathering place for fans; a Hall of Fame, with graphics and memorabilia celebrating the rich history of Villanova Athletics; a 360-degree concourse hosting a variety of concessions, merchandise stands and other fan amenities. The Finneran Pavilion is a $65 million, fully donor funded renovation, which was led by 20 leadership gifts of $1 million or more and 130 major gifts of $100,000 or more. The lead gift was presented by William “Bill” Finneran, a 1963 Villanova School of Business graduate with a degree in Economics.

Villanova will host seven games at the Wells Fargo Center in 2019-20.
