Introduction

• Vincent van Gogh is one of the most famous painters in the world.

• He is considered the greatest Dutch painter after Rembrandt.

• He was born on the 30th March 1853 in Zundert, The Netherlands.

• Van Gogh had three sisters and two brothers but he relied on his younger brother Theo the most.

Introduction

• Before becoming an artist, he had many other jobs in different countries:

- he was an art dealer in France,

- teaching assistant in England

- and a preacher in Belgium.

Sunflowers

• Vincent believed that colors showed emotions. He used colors to express himself. His favorite colors were yellow and orange because they are warm and bright.

• Vincent loved flowers, young ones as well as the old ones which have lost petals. Once, after an argument with his parents he went out to buy himself a bunch of flowers to cheer himself up. His favorite flowers were sunflowers.

• Van Gogh intended to decorate Gaugin’s room with sunflower paintings.

The Red Vineyard• The most

important person in Vincent’s life was his brother Theo.

• Vincent van Gogh relied on his brother because Theo gave him money to become an artist.

• This was the only painting van Gogh sold during his life. It is now in a museum in Russia.

Self-portrait

• Van Gogh’s best friend was another famous artist called Paul Gauguin.

• Once, van Gogh had an argument with Gauguin and he was so angry with him that he cut a bit of his own ear off with a razor.

• This painting is a self-portrait of Vincent with a bandage after this incident when he cut off a bit of his ear.

Café Terrace

• One episode of Dr Who was about Vincent van Gogh.

• In this episode, one scene was filmed in Croatia.

• This café that van Gogh painted was created in a town on the Croatian coast where they used a café to make it look like Café Terrace.

A Wheatfield with Cypresses• He suffered from

depression and was mentally ill which is why he went to a mental hospital in St-Rémy. While he was there, he made this painting and around 150 other paintings in just one year.
