25Welcome to VineSpring is finally here and we’re all starting to ditch the multiple layers, get out of the house and some of us may even be venturing into the garden to make those much-needed preparations for the months ahead. Luckily, we have a selection of garden features providing stylish inspiration for creating that perfect family garden. While we’re enjoying some sunshine now is a good time for getting out into the country for a ramble and while you’re at it, why not stop at one of Kent’s numerous charming country pubs? Our Country Pub Special highlights just some of the great pubs we have on our doorstep and why it is so important to support them, especially with 25 of them closing a week in the UK. In addition, we do a bit of snooping around from Vine HQ, starting with an investigation into independent Sevenoaks businesses, from technology companies to accountants. We then head off to a stunning contemporary family home for our Through the Keyhole feature to find out why serial movers the de Pascalis family particularly love their new home. I also quiz Men Behaving Badly star Leslie Ash on her theatrical role All The Single Ladies and we discover that Combe Bank actually used to be the former home of aviation fanatic Robert Mond, who used the grounds of the mansion to house his home-built aircraft.

Enjoy the issue!

Oli Dillon of St Michael’s Prep School has been offered a drama scholarship at Sutton Valance. The young star who has cystic fibrosis, but says “it doesn’t have me”, landed his first role at the age of seven as the voice of The Heffalump for a Walt Disney production. Now aged 13, Oli has recorded over 300 voiceovers and appeared in various television shows. After being encouraged by his teachers at St Michael’s Prep, Oli enrolled in Saturday morning drama classes

and was quickly picked up by an agent after appearing in his first show. Oli battled through an intense regime of medication and physiotherapy to follow his dream and although he is looking forward to taking his next step Oli is certainly going to miss his school. He said: “St Michael’s is like a big family, and they have not only supported me but they have also been there to support my mum when I have been unwell. I leave school this year in July and I have been offered a drama scholarship at my next school

and I am really looking forward to that, but I know I will be very sad to leave St Michael’s.”

Pub launches reward-card scheme The George & Dragon, Chipstead is giving back to its customers by launching an innovative new rewards-card. The scheme will be launched on March 16. To show its appreciation for customers’ loyalty the new card will reward you every time you visit, whether for a quick drink, coffee or full dining experience. The reward card offers customers the opportunity to earn one point for every £1 spent and for every 200 points collected you will be rewarded with £10 to spend. The more you spend the more points you earn, and these points can be redeemed on your next visit to the George and Dragon, Chipstead or can be saved up for that special occasion. Owner Benjamin James, pictured below, said: “We have spent the last two years building relationships with the local farmers and artisan producers and we are thrilled that customers are supporting them through their loyalty to us. That’s why we think it’s the perfect time to launch the new card, especially with the current economic climate.” Card holders will also be able to take advantage of free Wi-Fi, double-points days and invitations to special reward card-holder events, with a regular newsletter notifying them of the most recent benefits.

n Applying for a reward card couldn’t be simpler, for more information on the scheme and how to join call 01732 779019 or visit www.georgeanddragonchipstead.com

£750k investment in new Arriva bus fleet

Arriva recently put a fleet of brand-new buses onto its service linking Sevenoaks with Bromley, Tonbridge and Tunbridge Wells. The £750,000 investment brought new standards of comfort on buses which are fully accessible and which have minimal exhaust emissions to help improve air quality. The 402 runs hourly to Bromley on Mondays to Saturdays and half-hourly to Tonbridge and Tunbridge Wells. A £6 ‘Bromley Shopper’ ticket can be bought on any Arriva bus in Sevenoaks and then used to take the 402 to Bromley and back without paying again.

Knole Flux project launches this month An exciting new way of presenting the wonderful collections of Knole will be starting this year. The project, called Knole Flux, has been devised because emergency repairs on the building will have an impact on some of the showrooms that make up part of the visit to the house. Rather than hide the repair work or close any rooms, visitors in 2012 will have an intriguing view of the rooms where lights and sound experimentation along with projected text will bring the work to life. The project will also expose panelling unseen in living memory and has enabled a secret door to be opened in ‘The Spangled Bedroom’. This will allow visitors a rare peek at the inner canopy of the famous ‘Spangled Bed’. Due to the building works, the National Trust is doing everything possible to prevent temporary closures and the Knole Flux project will bring visitors into the heart of the work to save Knole – showing why the repairs are needed and how they can get involved. There are also a number of activities at Knole in March. Visitors will have the chance to meet the conservation team on March 16, participate in a spring walk from Knole to Emmetts Garden and see the conservation plans for Lord Sackville’s private garden.

A mbitious couple Melissa and Bernard de Pascalis aren’t shy when it comes to renovation and building work. Having had around six new houses built in the

past 12 years, the pair have got creating a family home down to a fine art, with Bernard building them (it is the nature of his business after all) and Melissa realising her interior visions, each house being completely unique from the last. The family has had everything from a New England-inspired home to their current contemporary new-build property in the heart of Sevenoaks. Melissa has gone through the interior trends from traditional

antique furniture via Cath Kidston florals to her current interior choice – a light and airy feel with neutral colours and chunky pieces of modern wooden furniture, with accents of colour created through the use of soft furnishings and vibrant artwork. Regardless of the ever-changing interior styles the collection of Scottish art remains a constant feature in the de Pascalis household; as a Scottish girl at heart, Melissa has always had a passion for it and Bernard bought her first commissioned piece by Muriel Barclay. Their current home began as a 1970s property and they decided to knock it down to make way for a new build that would cater for the large family of six, with the couple’s four young sons at the forefront of

Page 18: Vine Magazine March 2012

their minds. “Despite the property being a good size, we decided to start from scratch and go for something more contemporary. This house is so unlike the other properties, but I think it’s my favourite. You learn something from each new build and I enjoy choosing the fixtures and fittings in each home.” So is she itching to start a new project? “I love this house so I have no fixed ideas as yet. But I’d really like to take an old character property, something utterly different, and put her back together. Although this property is our house, it’s Bernard’s business too and we show clients around so they get a feel for what can be achieved in their own homes.” And what a home it is too. “I wanted it to flow seamlessly from room to room rather than make each space look completely different from the next,” explains Melissa. Neutral tones, such as the white floor tiles from Porcelanosa, cream walls, beige carpets and the blonde ash feature staircase all create a sense of seamlessness, space and organic living. Despite having four boys there’s no clutter, thanks to fitted storage

solutions in practically every room – a feature that Melissa particularly loves. The kitchen by Leicht Enclosure is designed with floor to ceiling contemporary walnut cabinetry with in-built Siemens appliances and a central workspace by Apex Masonry doubles up as a breakfast bar, worktop, hob and storage space. The couple have also integrated state-of-the-art audio visual equipment and lighting systems; every bedroom has speakers built into the ceiling and Rako lighting technology. The huge cinema room with a large sofa unit and oversized bean bags makes for the perfect family haven at weekends and other additions like underfloor heating make the house as comfortable as possible. Despite all this new technology and contemporary furnishings, there’s certainly still an element of sentimentality about the house. Footprints and first shoes in the living room, family photos on an antique table in the hallway and a 12-year-old Ikea sofa favoured by the dogs proves that the house isn’t just for show – it’s a well-loved and well-used family space too. v

During the 17th and 18th centuries Combe Bank was one of many fine mansions within the boundaries of Sevenoaks. For many years the estate was

owned by the Isley family until one ancestor sold it to pay off his gambling debts. It was purchased by the Ash family and later sold to the Campbells. They succeeded the title of Earls of Argyle and the house remained in this noble family for many years. The beginning of the 20th century was very significant for the area, especially for the seat of Combe Bank. In 1913 the house and estate came into the possession of Mond, a German-born chemist and industrialist. The estate encompassed many acres of land including a very large field. Robert Mond was a life-long aviation enthusiast and had taken a very keen interest in early flying attempts on the Isle of Sheppey. The field seemed to him to be made for flying. When certain individuals approached him, Mond agreed to sponsor the production of aircraft at Combe Bank under the direction of an unlikely character named Prince Serge de Bolotoff. The prince was thought to be of Polish ancestry and had settled in England after fleeing the political situation

in his country. This did not deter Mond from providing financial backing, however, and construction of several wooden hangars began at Combe Bank. Prince Serge de Bolotoff was not a newcomer to aviation. In 1913 he had designed and built a Voisin Triplane which had been used in taxiing trials at Brooklands until it was damaged on rough ground. Mond and de Bolotoff joined forces, founding the de Bolotoff Company of Sevenoaks. They began an immediate recruiting campaign for workers and test pilots, with many employees from the immediate area. The chief pilot was another Pole, Lieutenant Olechnovitch, who led a team of test pilots from around the country. With the wooden hangars completed, work began on the production of the Voisin Biplanes. Test flying was carried out from the field, while company administration took place in the mansion. For nearly five

years the company produced the aircraft but it is not known exactly how many. A reference to a crash in 1915 at nearby Bessels Green appears in local records and, as the only

aircraft in the area were those built by de Bolotoff, it is assumed that it was one of the Voisins. While production of aircraft at Combe Bank was taking place, the mansion itself was the hub of much social activity, in addition to being the location for many of Mond’s chemistry experiments. It was regarded as one of the more liberal houses in the area and when de Bolotoff married into the Selfridge family, Combe Bank hosted the reception. By 1918 the company had achieved no significant success in selling the aircraft and financial pressure on Mond increased. In 1919

a two-seat general utility biplane powered by a 200hp Curtiss eight cylinder water-cooled engine was registered to de Bolotoff. However, even this new development could not save the

LEGAL MATTERSThe team at Warners Solicitors offer regular expert advice on topics relevant to our everyday lives. This month Jane Bohill advises on how to stay on the legal side of selling your home

W hen a house is bought or sold, the seller will complete a set of

questionnaires which includes the Property Information Form. This asks the seller for information relating to the property including enquiries on boundaries, alterations, services and disputes. Having seen these forms, the prospective buyer’s solicitors may make additional enquiries in order to establish further details of the property being bought. The replies to the initial Property Information Form or to additional enquiries, which are often written on the enquiry sheet, must not be treated as just a ‘form-filling’ exercise by the seller. If the answers provided are significantly untrue, the law of misrepresentation may apply. For a contract to purchase a property to have been obtained by misrepresentation, it is necessary that the seller has made a reply which is factually untrue, as a result of which the buyer has entered into the

contract to his or her detriment. A person induced into entering into a contract by misrepresentation may be entitled to damages or to withdraw the contract. Attempts to limit liability for errors and mistakes in replies to pre-contract enquiries will normally only be upheld by the courts if the limitation is reasonable. It can be quite common for sellers to fail to disclose known structural defects and disputes with neighbours. However, knowingly making a false claim or failing to disclose a salient fact could lead to an action for damages by the buyer subsequently when the truth comes to light. A buyer can go some way to protecting his or her position by making sure any particular questions on which they wish to have specific assurances are clearly put to the seller. Some risks (such as title defects) can be insured against.

company and it collapsed, owing its workforce several weeks’ wages. Mond severed his relationship with the prince and did not venture in the business of aviation again. Nevertheless, this episode ensured that Sundridge Airfield, as it later became known, was placed on the aviation map of the UK. Eleven years later, the touring shows of Alan Cobham and Campbell-Black would bring aircraft to the field to allow the public to experience flying. The Flying Circus became a regular visitor and even when Combe Bank was sold by Mond, it still attracted many air-minded people. One of these was Tom Worsell of Sevenoaks who flew his home-built aircraft, powered by a 10hp Singer car engine, from the airfield. Although the aircraft did eventually become airborne, it was for seconds rather than minutes and it finally ended up in a ditch. Again during World War II, Sundridge Airfield was used as a dump for salvaging crashed aircraft. With the end of the war, the airfield fell into disrepair. The house today has changed very little from the Mond period and is now an independent girls’ school. It did, however, play its part in bringing aviation to the area, making the early 20th century a very significant episode in its history.

The British pub is much more than just a place to have a pint; it is at the heart of communities and villages, it brings people together, provides entertainment, stimulates good conversation and is part of our national heritage. So why are we now beginning to see a decline in our great country pubs? Frank Scott, landlord of The White Rock Inn in Underriver, believes there are two main reasons. “Firstly, the price of pub beer keeps rising. What the government should do is put a tax on takeaway alcohol. Supermarket booze is so cheap and it causes so many problems on the streets and in households. In pubs we can control binge drinking. Secondly, television is turning us into a nation of soap cabbages. On a weekend, people would rather stay in and watch TV instead of go out to a pub and communicate and have fun.” Iain Loe, a spokesperson for CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale), also recognises the problems of cheap alcohol being sold at supermarkets and Iain believes that pubs should be offered more protection: “Pubs all over the UK are being closed

and the likes of supermarkets and betting shops are appearing in their place and it’s extremely sad. Instead of being forced to close down, locals should be offered the chance to buy their pub. What the government doesn’t realise is that pubs are part of the solution for alcohol abuse. But we also need to see more people visiting pubs. Pubs really are the original social networking site. Forget your Facebook or your Twitter, pubs have been around for hundreds of years and you can get all the gossip and conversation you need instead of interacting through a computer. A pub isn’t just for Christmas – it’s for 365 days a year.” Losing our country pubs would be like losing a huge chunk of our national identity. With Lent approaching, maybe now would be a good idea to give up that bottle of wine indoors and pay a visit to your local pub instead.

n CAMRA is running a ‘Save your local’ campaign in April; for more information visit www.camra.org.uk. What is your opinion on saving our independent pubs? Have your say by emailing [email protected]

Britain is the birthplace of the country pub. It is a sacred symbol of our nation, joined in the elite league by the red telephone box, the double-decker bus and the Queen. So it is sad that we are now seeing an average of 25 pubs closing every week, says Chris Bennett

T his quintessentially Kentish inn is situated in the historic village of

Otford, set opposite a unique Grade II-listed duck pond. The Crown is full of historic charm, dating back to the 16th century, with everything from a full suit of armour to fireplaces so big you could sit in them. There’s an extensive bar area and also a restaurant area, which is packed for their popular Sunday lunches. The chef uses local produce wherever possible and the pub’s takeaway service is popular: there’s curry night on Wednesdays; fish and chips for £6.95 on Fridays and Saturdays and ‘bring your own plate’ for lazy Sunday lunches. The beer is equally good, with local ales including the ‘Otford Crown Ale’ from Westerham

Brewery and also ‘Three in a Bed’ from Tonbridge Brewery. The Crown also holds beer festivals in April and October, the next one from April 21-23.The pub is also busy with other events too, including St Patrick’s Night, with live music and a three-course meal for £19.50 on March 17 and on April 14 there’s Titanic Night to mark the anniversary of the legendary ship. Dress up in your finery, listen to a talented fiddle-playing duo and tuck into a first class three-course meal (also £19.50).

I f you haven’t been to The George & Dragon in Chipstead, it’s about

time you did. As many of you know, our resident foodie and forager Benjamin James has written about his passion for food in Vine for several years and truly practises what he preaches – food from field to fork. As a finalist in the Taste of Kent Awards 2011 for Dining Pub of the Year, The George & Dragon, Chipstead is well-known for its excellent quality dishes and reasonable prices.

Although this local pub works religiously with artisan producers and Kent farms in order to source the best produce around, it doesn’t mean it’s unattainable. It’s not pricey and it’s not too posh for those who just want bangers and mash – it’s just that the sausages happen to be award-winning, the mash is made with double cream and a pinch of nutmeg and the gravy is a red wine reduction using sweet red onions. But you don’t need to worry about all that; what you want is good food and you certainly get it, no questions asked. Ben and his team of chefs do use genuine ‘seasonal’ produce, but as Ben explains the seasons are in fact incredibly short: “You can’t be completely purist, as onions for example are actually only in season for about six weeks of the year in

the UK – good luck to anyone wanting to cook without an onion! However, we believe eating British is really important and we are proud to produce food that is local, seasonal and fresh; there’s no pretentiousness about it, it’s just honest, good food, done well.” The George & Dragon, Chipstead isn’t just about the food though; the

16th-century pub serves a blinding cocktail, with the cocktail of the month also reflecting the seasons, and award-winning local ales. The oak beams, real fires and original features offer an intimate and comfortable dining space and the garden is a delight in summer. By the way, if you’re not sure about where exactly Chipstead is, it is only a five-minute drive from Sevenoaks and trust me – it’s worth the trip.

A s soon as you pull up to The Woodman, set in the picture postcard setting of Ide Hill, it becomes apparent that this is a true country pub. The undulating lawn with its freshly

planted flowerbeds, rockery, fishpond, kitchen garden and menagerie of animals makes for a children’s paradise and a day out that genuinely caters to all the family. Purpose-built pens house a collection of chickens, ducks and rare black pheasants (while a pheasant stroganoff may be on the menu, these ones are definitely pets!), as well as long-standing member of the brood, Harvey the giant rabbit. The owner, Heinz Klose, is a bit of a dab-hand at DIY and is preparing to build an aviary to hold various species of birds from parakeets to cockatoos at the end of the month. Of course there’s plenty of entertainment for adults too; the pub holds some of the biggest live music events around at least three nights a week and the great thing about them, other than the broad range of musical talent, is that they’re free. From swing and jazz to the more recent addition of a rhythm and blues ‘groove evening’ on Thursdays, you can enjoy

music from local bands and even saxophonist Derrick Nash from The Jools Holland orchestra regularly makes an appearance. Derrick has performed solo at Glastonbury and also alongside A-list stars from Sir Paul McCartney to Annie Lennox. The huge upstairs function room is also available for free hire and offers the perfect space for celebrating special occasions. The 18th-century pub also makes for a cosy and intimate place to enjoy a meal, with its oak beams, dried hops, bone china and log fires. Once you’ve taken a seat, you can enjoy over 40 different freshly prepared dishes from The Woodman’s extensive menu. Expect the traditional flavours of good British pub grub, including braised lamb shank and confit of duck, or try something a little different from the specials board such as

wild rabbit casserole. In addition, their South African menu is superb; try their popular Potjies (slow-cooked stew), Durban Bunny Chow (don’t worry, it has nothing to do with Harvey the rabbit) or even homemade

boerewors. Wash it all down with one of

their hand-pulled, cask-conditioned ales pulled

by one of the friendly bar staff, or there’s a

range of four bitters and four lagers to try. The wine list is also extensive with 23 options and obviously you can expect some unique South

African wines as well as a strong list

of European wines. If you’re a ‘friend of

the Woodman’ and join the loyalty scheme you can enjoy a

complimentary glass of wine with a main course – if you’re with friends who have a main dish, they all get one too!

A s soon as you walk through the door of The

Poacher tucked away in the charming village of Tudeley, the first thing you may notice is a colourful piece of stained glass hanging from the wall. While small in scale, it is its larger historical significance that makes it particularly fascinating. The glass is in fact a replica of one of the 12 Marc Chagall stained glass windows which feature in the famous All Saints Church situated just down the road from the pub. It certainly provides a talking point and the rest of the interior doesn’t disappoint: inviting light oak floors, warm contemporary furnishings and dried hops perched above the bar tie the look together. Just as importantly, the selection of wine, cask

ales and beer is excellent, with perhaps the most popular of the ales being the selection from The Tonbridge Brewery, which is just a stone’s throw away from The Poacher. To accompany such an extensive selection of drinks is the pub’s equally gratifying menu. Head chef Andy Mclean uses fresh local ingredients to create an array of delightful yet good value for money dishes. Fish of the day is a regular popular feature and the confit of wild boar and haggis fritters are just some of the unique dishes to try. Although The Poacher is excellent for a special occasion, it is also a splendid choice for a mid-week lunch. Why not take a walk around the beautiful Tudeley village and see the church before settling

I n the quiet hamlet of Underriver near Hildenborough stands

the delightful White Rock Inn, a traditional family-run pub set in the heart of rural Kent. The oldest part of the pub dates back to the early 19th century but it is believed that a building may have stood on the land hundreds of years prior to the existing one due to its prominent location on the village trading routes. The White Rock Inn is very much a traditional English pub, with period oak beams, warm lighting and cosy fires and a

bright and airy restaurant that can hold 30 people. The large beautifully kept garden, however, is the key, where the pub holds barbeques and charity days in summer and it has enough space for a marquee, playing host to many weddings over the years. There’s even enough room to tether your horse or for ramblers to enjoy a quiet pint and take in the views with the family dog. More unusually, there is a pétanque pitch (they hold open pétanque nights on Tuesdays) and the chance to join in the old-fashioned Kentish pub game of Bat and Trap. The drink proves as good as the setting, with the ever-popular beers such as Harveys, White Rock bitter and Doombar. The landlord, Frank Scott, is also devoted to serving great country pub food and, as a keen fisherman, he

makes sure that diners can expect a great selection of fish dishes, from sea bass fillets to Fish Catalonia. Of course there are still traditional pub favourites on the menu such as suet beef and ale pudding and a delicious Sunday roast. The pub even caters for special dietary requirements, offering gluten-free dishes for example. With times a little tougher, guests can appreciate the pub’s innovative pound-stretcher menu, where you can enjoy a starter and dessert for £1 each when you buy a main for £11 during Monday to Saturday lunchtimes and Monday to Thursday evenings. The pub is never short of an event or two, and this March you can

participate in the charity quiz night on March 24; there’s local band The Elderly Brothers playing on March 30 and a South African food and wine tasting evening to look forward to on April 20.

T he George & Dragon is an award-winning pub saturated in fascinating history. It is impressive enough that Queen Elizabeth I allegedly stayed at the pub, let alone the Guy Fawkes rumours.

Legend has it that The George & Dragon was where Fawkes hatched his infamous gunpowder plot and that it was also the place where he was captured after fleeing London when it failed. Just standing outside the pub, with its striking black and white Tudor facade, you feel as if you have taken a step back in time. The pub is surrounded by stunning half-timbered houses and looming cobnut trees. There are also some nearby walks on which you can admire the beauty of Ightham village. A traditional English pub certainly springs to mind and tradition and heritage is something precious to owner Stephen Marney. “To be a part of it and to perpetuate it – that’s what motivates me,” says Stephen, and you only have to look as far as the menu to realise this. Good old hearty favourites are stand-out characters among a cast of other culinary delights. The roasted rump of lamb served with caramelised root vegetables and the seasonal Kentish game pudding filled with venison, partridge and

rabbit are the golden oldies compared to the more modern and exotic dishes such as the pan-seared fillet of red snapper with a Thai twist. The Sunday roast is also a firm favourite. Head chef Ian Ford is a perfectionist and this is apparent in the way he closely inspects every delivery, turning away any produce that doesn’t make the grade. However, speaking of the food menu without mentioning the award-winning wines would be unfair. In 2011, The George & Dragon was named as Shepherd Neame’s wine pub of the year and it’s easy to see why. If your preference is white wine then you may opt for the Runnymede Island Sauvignon Blanc 2011, produced from grapes grown from New Zealand. If red is your tipple then you will be delighted to see a Peter Lehmann ‘Weighbridge’ Shiraz or an Anuela Merlot. There is also an extensive list of French wines and, on special occasions, you may want to sample a glass of the Baron-Fuente Brut Grande Reserve champagne. An in-depth, descriptive wine menu is itself a delight. In fact, as soon as you walk through the pub door you get the feeling that you’re about to be in for a treat. Greeted by a roaring log fire and an inviting bar you feel instantly welcomed. Sit with Ightham

locals and chat with the friendly bar staff, lose yourself in your favourite book while sitting in an arm chair in front of the fire or even take your loved one into ‘The Snug’ – a romantic alcove which really lives up to its name. There are also other hidden gems in the pub. A fully equipped large function room, which can seat up to 60 people, is available for hire and there is also a private dining room which can be used to enjoy a more intimate meal. Every two weeks guests are also treated to an evening of jazz. The pub has visitors from all over the world and it really is easy to see why people travel to Ightham to soak up the atmosphere and heritage of this quintessential English pub.

Tell us a bit about Broadfire

We are an aspirational company who show businesses what they

could be doing with their IT, and help them to realise the potential

of technology. Based on years of multiple industry experience, we

deliver solutions quickly and efficiently.

What makes Broadfire unique?

You won’t find a company more passionate and knowledgeable

about technology and it is a one-stop-shop for all IT requirements.

Broadfire is an SME like most of our customers and we understand

the particular problems those businesses face, especially in the

recession. Although we are locally focused, we support the whole

of the south-east and unlike bigger organisations we are all about simplicity, effectiveness and agility. Our customers are also guaranteed a 30-minute response rate which beats the usual two to four hours response.

Cloud technology is a large part of what you do; can you briefly summarise what it does?

Basically with cloud technology you don’t need equipment on the premises. You just need a decent internet connection and you can access your entire systems, anywhere, for a simple monthly fee.

Why is technology so essential in enhancing businesses?

Effective IT is at the core of most service providing businesses.

Technology, such as our Private Cloud platform, allows you to

streamline processes, for example with Business Continuity there

are no more apocalyptic scenarios – we can rebuild your systems

exactly how they were before breaking within 10 minutes.

What are your most popular products?

• Traditional IT support – this is a three-tiered package to provide

the most cost-effective solution for every business.

• Telecoms and CRM – our hosted solutions significantly reduce

call costs from any device, anywhere in the world, and provides

enterprise call centre features and in-call customer information.

On the right frequency

How is the digital changeover going to affect everybody?

It’s a minefield – nobody really knows what is going to happen after the digital switch over and Sevenoaks can be one of the most difficult areas to obtain a good Freeview TV signal due to its location from both the Crystal Palace and Bluebell Hill TV transmitters. Hills and distance are the main problem and without the correct equipment there may still be signal loss even after the switchover on April 18.

Is the government scheme a good idea?

The subsidised government scheme for the over-75s is all well and good but turning up armed with a Freeview box and saying that it will work after the switchover is not always the correct answer. There are many factors to be taken into consideration.

What services and products do you offer?

We provide TV and radio aerials, Freesat satellite, Sky and all types of TV and home cinema sound systems. We also install CCTV which you can view live online.

Business: Whitebeam Audio VisualName: Steve PassfieldTitle: Owner

1 If you have poor TV signal do not waste

money on a booster – your existing system

may not be compatible with your new

amplifier.

2 If you have a poor quality picture even with

an amplifier, consider Freesat as your location

will not affect this.

3 Before adding any additional TV points

always have your system metered for signal

strength first.

4 When making enquiries for a new aerial,

always insist on a site survey as this is the only

way of giving you an accurate estimate of costs.

5 Make sure the company you choose are

fully insured, offer 12 months warranty and are

a member of a trade body like check-a-trade

Child development experts move locationGymboree, the company that create a fun and magical world where children learn, has moved to Seal, Hollow Road and it has also expanded to five days a week. The childhood development experts at Gymboree have designed unique classes to help young children learn as they play. The classes also teach parents or carers interesting new ways of engaging and exciting their child. Gymboree’s Play and Learn Level Two Class is a perfect example. It is designed for children aged six to 10 months and the child will learn about cause and effect. They will build strength through play with ramps, slides and climbers and will develop confidence in their movement. A typical session will start with song and there will be a specific theme which the activities will adhere to. Movement exploration time will also feature, enabling the child to think about their movement while also improving their physical time and balance. The Gymboree staff will use visual, tactile and auditory aids to engage the child. To round off the class in style, the children will meet Jimbo the clown – who is guaranteed to put a smile on faces!

SKIN SOLUTIONS

Dr Johanna Ward Medical Director of The Skin Clinic Sevenoaks provides the answer to all your cosmetic queries. This month she looks at the benefits of Botox®

Q: I am considering having

Botox®, is there anything I should be aware of?Mary, Sevenoaks

A: Botox® is actually a brand name for Botulinum toxin, a toxin derived from a bacteria called Chlostridium Botulinum. We use botox in cosmetic dermatology to help soften and relax wrinkles and lines. If you are considering

having Botox® for the first time there are a few things that you should know. The most important thing to be aware of is that the cosmetic dermatology and aesthetics industry is poorly regulated. When choosing a cosmetic practitioner it is always best to go to a proper medical skin clinic where doctors or nurses do the injections. Most experienced doctors will be members of the British Association of Cosmetic Doctors (BACD). Secondly, it is important to have a proper face-to-face consultation with the practitioner who is going to do your injections to establish whether you are suitable for the treatment. A medical history should be taken and the likely

benefits of Botox® treatments should be explained to you.

A lot of people having Botox® injections for the first time are slightly nervous as they don’t know what to expect. Many people worry about things like the risk of allergic reaction, that they will look different and that

people will be able to tell what they have had done. Allergic

reactions to Botox® are very rare. At our clinic we always suggest doing a light treatment for people who have never had

Botox® before so that the results are very subtle. If your treatments are done well you will simply look refreshed and revitalised and no one will know. The injections themselves are quick and virtually painless as the needles used are very small. What most people don’t know

is that Botox® takes up to two weeks to work so it’s not an instant result. At our clinic we always review people two weeks after their treatment so that we can see the final result. This is an opportunity to make any final tweaks so that the results are symmetrical and pleasing. A good clinic will always take before and after photos so that you can see how the treatments have helped soften and reduce your facial lines. If used regularly,

Botox® injections can stop your facial wrinkles and lines from progressing, helping to preserve a youthful and refreshed look. Treatments generally last three to four months. Areas of the face

that can be treated with Botox® are the frown lines, forehead lines and the crow’s feet or laughter lines. Finally, as with all cosmetic medical procedures, the most important thing is to find an experienced doctor that you trust and who puts you at ease.

SQUARE SALON LAUNCH Vine went down to Riverhead to The Square Salon and Spa’s glittering launch party and found out more about top beauty brand Carita

Sevenoaks’ finest were out in all their glory at the launch of The Square Salon in Riverhead last month. Champagne flowed as 250 guests were serenaded by prolific local music talent Max Cooke, who has toured with the likes of A-list celebrities Katy Perry and Ellie Goulding. Salon and spa owners Ben Hards and Lucy Bulbrook welcomed visitors to the salon, along with their staff and representatives from top beauty brand Carita, who held several demonstrations throughout the evening. Parisian brand Carita has been used by stars from Audrey Hepburn to modern-day beauty Cheryl Cole and many swear by Carita’s Pro-Lift facials.

Guests gathered round to watch a facial in action in one of the beautifully decorated

treatment rooms, carried out by Carita beauty technician Givlia Vendone.

While the Pro-Lift facial can last up to an hour and half, even in the short space of time during the demonstration, the results were incredibly dramatic, with the treated area visibly lifted and brighter.

Guest Lisa Nott said: “The results of the facial are fantastic and the staff

look so smart. I have had a facial by one of the beauty specialists before and they are

so discreet and make you feel really comfortable. The Carita products are truly incredible and I would recommend them to anyone.”

THE STORY:

Over 60 years ago, two visionary sisters, Maria and Rosy Carita, put all of their talent into the service of women’s beauty. Prior to creating the legendary House of Beauty the sisters were successful female hairstylists in Paris. Very quickly, their creativity and daring led them to collaborate with the future top names in French haute couture. Since then, the Carita sisters have bequeathed a unique heritage: an innovative beauty brand of international repute,

THE PRO-LIFT FACIAL:

The Pro-Lift facial combines high-performance anti-ageing products with manual and specific massage techniques. The facial smoothes fine lines and wrinkles while also firming and toning the skin for an instant, visible lift. While the facial concentrates on the face and neck, the intense treatment lasts for an hour and a half, massaging hands, arms and feet for a truly pampering experience. For lasting results, a course of six treatments is recommended and can be tailored to suit every skin type.

ASK JASONFitness professional Jason Crow answers your exercise dilemmas

Q: Is the solution to healthy living eating less and exercising more?Helen, Sevenoaks

A: Twenty years ago I would have said yes, but as modern society has developed, so too has the need for a modern day solution. If you are eating less than the energy used in your daily life, you will create a negative calorie balance and you will lose weight. What you do need to remember is that your brain’s main function is to keep you alive. It will react defensively by slowing your metabolism if you decrease your calories too much. By making wiser food choices you can create a negative calorie balance, maintain or even increase your metabolism and encourage your body to select fat as its primary energy source.Let’s face it, most people are pretty poor at finding time to

exercise or the motivation to move off the sofa. So if the answer isn’t volume of exercise, is it intensity? Well, intense exercise does allow us to burn more energy in a shorter period of time. It increases our metabolism throughout the day due to an enhanced muscle tone, and it increases your body’s ability to burn fat by lowering your heart rate as you become fitter. However, intense exercise requires improved posture and range of motion to reduce the risk of injury. There is a journey to take to this point, it does not happen overnight, but with professional assistance it can be fun. The solution: Eat the right foods at the right times and develop your exercise ability.

To Dan,

Thank you so very much for my new smile! I never thought I would see the day without that awful denture. I really appreciate all your time and patience you have put into creating the best possible result especially in the small time span I gave you. I can honestly say I couldn’t want anything more. I now have a new-found confidence and soon will get used to smiling showing my new teeth. Thank you once again also your wonderful team and to Tony in the lab.

If you can fix my teeth you can fix anyone.

Valentina

Vine talks to Dan Patel from Dental Elegance about how he gives one patient the smile she deserves with an innovative bridging system

“This young lady came to us very unhappy with the appearance of her upper front teeth. She had a condition called Hypodontia which is where one or more teeth fail to develop. In this lady’s case she had three upper front teeth missing. Since she was a child she had been given an upper partial denture to wear to replace the missing teeth. The patient was finding the denture uncomfortable and loose and was keen to have a more ‘fixed’ solution. “After discussing various treatment options, including having implants or a new better-fitting denture, the patient decided to have beautiful all porcelain fixed bridges. A bridge is a non removable replacement for missing teeth which is supported by the adjacent teeth. As the patient worked away from home she wanted a relatively quick solution. To begin with a wax-up was done, so that the patient could see what her new smile would look like before she committed to further treatment. A wax-up is really important as it allows the patient to try their new smile before they buy! The patient was delighted with the proposed new smile and therefore was happy to carry on with the treatment. “The teeth were more centred and shaped better to merge with her lips and soft tissues so they do not appear artificial. She had minimal preparations carried out on the supporting teeth and had two separate temporary bridges placed while the real ones were constructed in the laboratory. Spectacular, strong and biocompatible eMax all-ceramic bridges were then fitted. The amazing result you can see in the after photos was achieved in just three weeks! The patient is delighted with her new smile. She literally can’t stop smiling!”

BENEFITS OF BOWENJackie Reader from Solar Health explains how the Bowen Technique can help anyone from asthmatics and migraine sufferers to babies and sports professionals

T he Bowen Technique is designed to prompt the body to reset, repair and

balance itself and clients report the experience of pain relief, improvement of function and recovery of energy. It is a remedial and relaxing hands-on therapy that uses the gentle pressure of thumbs and fingers on precise points of the body in order to perform Bowen’s unique sets of rolling-type moves, stimulating the muscles and soft tissue. There is no manipulation or adjustment of hard tissue and, as it is not dependent on hard pressure, there is no awkward bending, twisting or re-positioning of the client during the treatment. Because of this, Bowen can be considered for clients for whom other forms of therapy might be too aggressive, forceful or invasive. The tiniest of babies through to the frailest of adults have been treated with Bowen. Post-treatment reactions to treatment are not uncommon and include tiredness, thirst, an increase in original symptoms, stiffness, headaches, flu-like symptoms and increased dream activity. Aftercare advice will emphasise the importance of movement, the drinking of water and the return for treatments. It is vital that a client does not cease the treatment in response to a strong reaction. The moves are so subtle that if a strong reaction is experienced it demonstrates how profound the work can be and further treatments are essential if

the full effect is going to be felt. Most people will have responses within three to four sessions, where even long-standing pain has been relieved in many clients. Most sports- or work-related problems can often be dealt with within the two or three treatments, making Bowen not only good remedial treatment, but cost-effective for the client as well. However, it is recommended that clients return for regular treatments every six to eight weeks to maintain optimum health. One of the more difficult elements to come to terms with is how little is done during a session. The client may well walk out of the treatment room having felt little or no improvement over and above a sense of relaxation. However, the reactions to Bowen in the days following a treatment can often belie its soft and gentle approach. Stiffness, soreness, headache and feeling like “I’ve been run over by a bus!” are common. All excellent signs, they demonstrate that the brain and body have started the process of repair. Although musculoskeletal problems such as frozen shoulder, back and neck pain account for the majority of conditions brought for Bowen treatment, it can also be helpful with more organic problems. Clients have reported significant improvements with asthma, migraines, irritable bowels, infertility and other reproductive problems. Even hayfever has been resolved with Bowen.

STRAIGHT FROM THE SHOWERFrom high-shine ponytails to damp tousled waves – this spring trend couldn’t be more natural with its ‘just out of the shower look.’ Clean, shiny and healthy looking – it may take you a while to build up the confidence to wear it but you certainly won’t regret it.

Style tip: Use a good hairspray for the ultra-shiny ‘mirror’ look or a serum or oil-based hair product for tousled waves.

Products: Redken Argan Oil (£24.95) | Elnett Satin Diamond Hold & Shine hairspray (£3.19 per 100ml)

FRESH-FACEDGive your lids and cheeks a glow this month by

caramelising your skin tone. Opt for a tinted moisturiser or a liquid foundation rather than a powder-based

formula for a sheer finish with added glow. You can even simply use Vaseline in exchange for lipstick to highlight

your brow and cheek bones to give your skin some extra radiance for a totally natural look.

Style tip: When choosing a foundation, test it on your jaw-line rather than on the back of your hand and in an

area with natural light

BOLD BROWS

Spider-leg eyebrows are slowly being washed away down the plug hole. Give your eyes a firm frame by going for the ever more popular architectural brow look – think Elizabeth Taylor and Grace Kelly. Don’t hold back with the pencil – be firm and assertive!

Style tip: Pick a brow pencil a shade or two darker than your natural colour for an enhanced definition.

Products: Clarins Eyebrow Pencil (£15.53) | Benefit Speed Brow: quick-set brow gel (£12)

Lipstick can sometimes be too harsh, especially in the day, so why not opt for a tint instead, adding a sense of romance to the look. MAC has just introduced a new range of lip conditioners that have both SPF protection and a delicious scent too – perfect for spring through to summer. You can also buy tints that can be used on your cheeks, so pick a lip and cheek tint for versatility.

Style tip: Before using a tint, gently exfoliate your lips and apply quickly with either your finger or a make-up sponge for even coverage.

Products: Cook Mac Tendertone Lip Balm (£11) | Benefit Posie tint (£24.50)

This month, we take a look at the interior trends that are stealing the show this spring, with everything from Hollywood glamour-inspired pieces to fabulous florals

ç°lure of the Orient

Flower PowerA touch of sparkle

Floral designs are appropriately in fashion at the moment and there are plenty of wallpapers that cover both the current trend for retro florals and the more subtle, traditional papers. This John Lewis ‘Honesty’ wallpaper in Clementine (£22 per roll) would make a great feature wall and brighten up any open-plan living space, or try this versatile and charming hand-sketched hydrangea ‘Sicily’ wallpaper in Chardonnay as part of the Prestigious Textiles Collection by Osborne and Little (£38 per roll).

Just like you’d add a touch of sparkle to an outfit with your favourite jewellery, you can use it to accessorise your home too. Inject a little Hollywood glamour into your home with these spangly home accessories – this white table lamp from Linea (£45) will brighten up your room with its reflective mosaic base and this black sequin cushion from Kenneth Cole (£15) adds another dimension to your usual scatter cushions. Both work well when it comes to introducing varying textures and tones into a monochromatic colour scheme.

With 2012 the Chinese year of the dragon, oriental designs are taking a leading role in many households. Renowned furniture maker David Linley has paid homage to the mighty mythical creature by designing this unique desk; two resplendent dragons flank the leather writing surface and it is constructed from ebonised walnut and rosewood (POA). You can also pay tribute and impress your dinner guests with this stylish porcelain noodle bowl, complete with black wooden chopsticks from The Cook’s Kitchen (£12.85).

Interior designers seem to be in agreement that your most cherished books deserve a better place than a cold attic. Anthropologie has a beautifully crafted console which leans casually against the wall (£528) and Mocha has designed some modern floating shelves, perfect for displaying those beloved classics (£29.99).

D avid Stead spent four years at Ravensbourne

Art College and graduated with a BA degree before establishing his landscaping business in 1981, so it is fair to say that he has a fine eye for detail. Originally working for two years concentrating on garden maintenance, David soon started working with Greenwich Council on large-scale works. The business rapidly expanded and he was soon building high-quality private gardens. In the last 28 years David has applied his artistic flair to hundreds of projects, creating beautiful gardens all over

DETAILED GARDEN DESIGNWith spring already upon us and summer just around the corner, David Stead Landscapes Ltd is preparing for a busy few months helping clients bring their gardens to life

skilled craftsmen will then carry out the project meticulously, never forgetting the company’s ideals. All aspects of hard and soft landscaping are covered and the landscapers will enhance the work with quality materials such as stone, timber, water,

Kent and the south-east. After an initial site visit, all estimates are comprehensive and are presented with a breakdown of prices for each area of construction. With attention to detail at the forefront of David Stead Landscapes Ltd, detailed garden designs can also be drawn up so clients can visualise the finished product. David’s

PATIO AND DECKING Create an extension of your indoor space in the summer months with a conveniently situated patio or decked area, preferably at the back of the property and near the kitchen and living room. This small town garden has a delightful shaded patio for an intimate gathering of friends while a decked space like this minimalist Huf Haus garden has more dramatic space for entertaining, loungers and views out onto the garden.

garden solutions

WATER FEATURESWhether you have a large or small garden, adding a

water feature is attainable. In a small town garden you can create a tranquil seating area by including a raised

water pool, separated by a walkway and trellising or, for impact, this dramatic Californian-style swimming pool and waterfall offers the ultimate solution. This project

included the creation of a 3m-high waterfall that can be walked under and required the excavation of the bank to

position large boulders.

AN OUTDOOR GARDEN ROOMIf you want a haven to relax in and shut yourself off from the world, or an outdoor ‘room’ where you can entertain your family and guests, there are plenty of solutions on offer. This small summerhouse on a raised lawn allows you to separate yourself from the chaos and perhaps read a book but still keep an eye on the rest of the garden (i.e. the children!). This open ‘garden room’ is great for entertaining in the evening during summer months, with integrated subtle lighting to enhance the ambience.

PLANT DOCTORMark Reeve is the Plant Doctor at Coolings, The Gardener’s Garden Centre in Knockholt. A trained horticulturalist of over 20 years, he is always on hand to help with your gardening questions

Q: My lawn looks fairly bad after this winter. What can I do to improve matters?

A: If your lawn is in poor shape then spring is a great time to tackle it! The first thing to do is to scarify it. This is the process of removing old grass (thatch) and moss from your lawn. You can hire mechanical scarifyers or use a spring tine rake (depending on how energetic you feel). To tackle uneven sections, top dress the lawn using a lawn dressing or top soil. Lastly, it is an excellent time to apply a weed and feed fertiliser such as Scotts Lawn Builder, which is also available with an added moss

killer. This will green up your lawn nicely and take care of your weeds too.

Q: I would like to start a compost heap; which is the best type?

A: Most models are suitable; look out for ones which keep out excess rain, allow drainage, keep in warmth and allow ventilation. Try to site it in an area that is not subject to extreme temperature fluctuation. A shaded or partially shaded area is ideal. If the composter has no base then it should be directly in contact with earth.

Q: Can I divide my overcrowded

herbaceous perennials at this time of year?

A: March and April are good months to split herbaceous perennials.

Delphiniums, Lupins and Dicentra are good

examples of this type of plant. If the clump is large then two forks back to back will separate the section once you have lifted it. You may find you get three or four new sections to replant but always discard the oldest woodiest section as this will not be productive. Replant in well prepared and fertilised sections of the border.

n Mark, or another member of Coolings’ trained team, is on hand at the centre seven days a week. If you need advice just call 01959 532269, send an email to [email protected] or visit Coolings, The Gardener’s Garden Centre, Rushmore Hill, Knockholt, TN14 7NN

M any of us don’t know where to start when it comes to realising our

dream garden, so maybe it’s time to get an expert in, whether it’s just advice on a new colour scheme; revamping a tired flowerbed; adding that patio you have always wanted or a total makeover. “I know we all long to have a mini Sissinghurst or a piece of the lost gardens of Heligan for our own, so why not make it a reality? March is a good month to begin by taking a view of your garden’s structure and see what’s coming up and, indeed, what is

Spring is on its way and we all have grand designs for our garden, but how do we go about achieving them? Gardening expert Sarah Seed of Seeds of Sevenoaks offers some advice

missing,” says Sarah. “Take one small area of your garden to design or simply rejuvenate a flower bed as a starting point. Plant a rainbow of perennials for year-round colour or go for an on-trend monochrome palette with the use of flowers and foliage. It’s amazing what can be created from the oldest of species being put together in a new way. This look can even be achieved in something as small as planter, a few pots or even a quirky everyday object, such as a broken tea pot or cup and saucer. “From the smallest of projects, I can help advise, design and project-manage so you can achieve the truly stunning garden you’ve always wanted this year.”

Whatever your style, Linden Landscapes can transform an outdoor space into your dream garden, whether it’s a quintessentially English garden or a cutting edge contemporary one. Vine takes some inspiration from Linden Landscapes’ previous projects

TRANSFORMyour garden

The heritage-style garden can be achieved on any scale but this stunning rill garden set in a former country estate perfectly illustrates this look (1). The orangery has espalier fruit trees planted along the wall to soften the brickwork and produce fruit in summer and at the rear the landscaping retains the view of the lake from the property. The inspiration for the rill and ponds comes from an old photo of a garden at Hampton Court Palace; the water feature consists of both an upper pond and a circular rill encircling a brick-paved seating area – perfect for enjoying the countryside views in summer. Equally beautiful and perhaps less formal is this lawned garden in Offham, Kent (2). Timber sleepers and a gravel path afford easy access to the lawn at the living room side of the property and an area of herbaceous planting breaks up the areas of paving. A sundial on a plinth is emphasised by the Alliums that surround it, providing the finishing touch to this country garden.

Whether you have a small city garden or a large piece of suburbia you can create a cutting-edge contemporary

garden. Clean structural lines make a statement with curved rendered walls

and glacial boulders in this award-winning Cranbrook garden (5), while a more geometric-

inspired look completes this compact urban garden in Sidcup (6). Timber decking was used in both projects to provide an outdoor extension to the indoor living space, with seating to enjoy the long summer days and evenings. Other features in the Sidcup garden include timber screens to complete the geometric oriental feel, a fibreglass-lined pond and LED lighting to highlight various features. Hunza lighting is used in the larger garden, designed by TV gardener Andy Sturgeon, to showcase existing large trees; the Breedon gravel paths and oak cube seating also work well with the prairie-style planting, providing a contrast between the man-made and natural gardens.

With a virtually unusable garden and a family with a young child, Linden had a challenge on its hands with this Sevenoaks garden (3), but the company proves that anything can be done with even the most awkward of spaces. The design of this award-winning garden resulted in a larger Indian limestone patio with lighting, an inbuilt stone waterfall and also a pergola at the sunny end to give shade and height to that area. Decking steps and platforms were built to allow access to the top of the garden where a small lawn now lies and low-maintenance shrubs create a usable family garden. The other project was on a much grander scale for an acre plot in Otford (4). The family wanted to landscape the garden and make room for an extension to be built. They also wanted to sculpt the garden to make usable spaces as the existing garden was entirely sloping. It was difficult for the family to find a landscaper who would deal with such a large project but Linden had the vision. Over 40 lorryloads of chalk were removed and Linden constructed several terraces with grass banks and planted beds. Formal brick and paving steps were built near to the house and meandering sleeper steps offer different views of the Otford Hills when descending.

The Pirates Of Penzancen During the autumn of 1922 when people were licking their wounds after World War I and morale in Sevenoaks was at an all-time low, it occurred to Mr Norman Warwick, Mr Wilfred Taylor and Capt Michael Michelli to found a local Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society in order to inject some much-needed colour into the community. And so the Sevenoaks Players was born. The first show, HMS Pinafore, was performed in 1923 in the Club Hall which was later bombed during World War II. Now here we are in 2012 and the Sevenoaks Players are celebrating 90 years of almost unbroken performances. To commemorate this landmark, the Players are staging the zany and madcap Broadway version of the Gilbert and Sullivan classic The Pirates Of Penzance. This hilarious version of the well-loved operetta contains all of the original score with additions from two other Gilbert and Sullivan classics, Ruddigore and HMS Pinafore. Director Keith Neville has brought together a top-class cast featuring Sevenoaks’ favourite Anthony Eglinton as The Major General, who also starred in other Stag Theatre classics as the King in The King And I and Tevye in Fiddler On The Roof. Ian Skipper provides musical direction and Jessica McEwen choreographs the show with an emphasis on comedy which includes accident-prone pirates and hapless policemen.

What inspired you to sing and become a teacher?

Well, I began learning piano at the age of eight and during my singing and aural tests my voice was recognised as something more and I was encouraged to take lessons. I was taught by Dorothy Bridger and, after 20 years, I have never looked back. I got a place at the Brit School and was then recommended for the Junior Academy at the Royal Academy of Music. I gained my BMus in Music from the Royal Northern College of Music. Shortly afterwards Dorothy got in contact and asked if I could teach

GET THE VOICE EXPERIENCE

her singing lessons after contracting meningitis – it was a daunting prospect, but I love teaching and have been doing it for over six years now. I now also run my own business called The Voice Experience.

What made you decide to set up The Voice Experience?

I was inspired by my own teacher, the late Howard Milner, who opened my eyes and ears – he taught famous Opera singers from all over the world and was an amazing coach. When I started teaching privately I had so many people on a waiting list I decided to set up a series of workshops; the classes are small and intimate so you can enjoy singing in the comfort of a group environment.

Tell us a bit more about the workshops:

There are two workshops this Easter – ‘Sing, Sing, Sing’ and ‘The Empowering Breath’. ‘Sing Sing Sing’ is for children aged 10-14 and is £25 at The Drive

Expert singing coach Natalie Farrell is encouraging everyone to sing, sing, sing with her new workshops. Take singing to the next level with The Voice Experience

Methodist Church in Sevenoaks between 10am – 12noon on April 11. The Empowering Breath is for adults (18+) and teaches how your breath is so important in everyday life, from public performance to improving self-esteem and reducing stress. Taught by Colin Reed, this session runs from 7pm-9pm on March 30 and costs £30, also at the church. I will also be running three voice clubs for beginners, intermediates and advanced which begin in May and Theatre Fusion in August covers dancing, singing and acting for children.

What type of music do you prefer?

I trained as a classical singer, but I love the vintage sound of Vera Lynn and Doris Day; I continue to sing professionally and have sung in a 1940s swing band called The Marjorie Belles, who featured on Chris Evans’ Drivetime show, and jazz vocals for events and venues such as The Goodwood Revival, The Pigalle Club.

n For more information on the workshops or to book, call Natalie on 07985 783606 or visit www.thevoiceexperience.co.uk. Also you can follow Natalie on Twitter and Facebook

Holly Seddon has the last word

Tonight there is a disco at the school. My two eldest children are dressed in their finest (although the boy has had to have a range of dirty tops and

ripped jeans peeled off him a couple of times to get to this stage). After UN levels of diplomatic back and forth, we have agreed to a level of make-up for the girl (i.e. very little and barely noticeable). I am aware that many children are experiencing things at a younger age than their parents did, and I have overheard whispered talks of ‘first kisses’ from gaggles of junior girls on the playground. Until now, I’d managed to bury my head in the sand but I’m realising I can’t ignore these possibilities for much longer. I should probably clarify that by ‘kiss’ I don’t mean the whole nine yards, I don’t mean Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh in Gone With The Wind. I mean the minutest of pecks (I hope). But still... I know it has to happen sooner or later. That immortalised pucker-up that is generally a disappointment and often a crashing embarrassment. I just hope it will be later. The dentist recently told us that our girl, like many others, may need braces when she loses the last of her baby teeth. The lovely lady dentist broke this news to us gently, and with compassion. She seemed rather taken aback by my husband and my virtual high-five, whoop, holler and chest bump at the news. Braces! Thank the Holy Goddess of Keeping Smelly Boys Away. Now if we could just somehow guarantee

a terrible case of acne to really seal the deal... I was firmly at secondary school when I had my first kiss. It was with a boy called Adam and – as these things had a habit of doing – involved around 30 other pupils from my year surrounding and slow-clapping us. Adam had barely finished nosing through a pack of cheese and onion crisps at the time. It was less than romantic. Perhaps I had similar dreams of first kisses far earlier that have now been

forgotten in the rubble of time, replaced by memories of actual kisses. Perhaps the perceived possibility of locking lips with a nervous, knock-kneed kid had loomed just as large at my primary school discos (which were actually barn dances), the memory erased as the potential never converted to actually happening. I hope so. I hope this is standard. I hope my daughter comes out of the

next few discos the same girl who goes in: full of hope and optimism about love and romance and kisses. I hope she, if not all the girls in town of the same age, saves her actual first smacker for well into her teens. Rather than wiping crisp crumbs from her face and wondering, “was that it?”. I really hope so. The fact that I’ve sent them in to tonight’s disco following an incredibly garlicky spaghetti bolognese whose scent could knock out Dracula, The Count from Sesame Street and Count Duckula is nothing, NOTHING, but a complete coincidence.

It’s not just the flowers that are colourful this Spring...

It’s time to switchThe digital switchover is now happening across Kent. We can help you make the switch and tune into a whole new viewing experience.

With the digital switchover now underway, there’s never been a better time to upgrade your television. This transition means that if you are using an analogue television then you will no longer be able to receive channels via a traditional aerial, typically BBC1, BBC2, ITV1, Channel 4 and Five. Instead, you will need to add a freeview box to your television or upgrade to a superior, digital set, such as any Bang & Olufsen television.

We can advise you on all your options and should you wish to move up to a Bang & Olufsen television, then we can make it even more appealing with our attractive trade-in promotions on the impressive BeoVision 10 and BeoVision 7 television families*. Simply trade-in any working television at our showrooms before 31st March 2012, no matter the age, brand or model – and you will benefit from a minimum trade-in allowance of:

■ £1,000 towards any BeoVision 7

■ £700 towards BeoVision 10-40 and 10-46

■ £400 towards BeoVision 10-32

For further information on how the digital switchover will affect you and our exclusive trade-in offers, please call our showrooms. Make the switch today – while you can.

*Terms and conditions apply. Please ask in-store for details.
