Kemsing Players theatre workshop

Exhibition shows intimate snaps of Knole

The Kemsing Players are inviting you to an exciting theatre workshop at St Edith’s Hall (opposite the pub) in Kemsing on Friday 16 November or 23 November at 7.30pm. The session enables you to try out the sound desk, see how scenery is designed and how the lighting rig works. You don't need to be an actor to contribute; the shows are a team effort involving stage managers, technicians, scene designers, bar staff and make-up artists amongst other roles. The next production is to be staged in April and has (amongst others) several interesting parts for young (or young at heart) ladies. Participants feel a real sense of achievement when the curtain goes down on the last night. So switch off the TV, put the dates on your calendar and we’ll see you there.

n For more information, contact Rick davnall on 07702 053984

An exhibition of experimental and intimate photographs is set to open in the Orangery at Knole, the National Trust House in Sevenoaks. The display will feature the work of West Kent artists Barbara Ludman and Katherine De Koningh, who entered a competition to record and submit their separate experiences of Knole Park. The artists edited their photographs to create daring, captivating and unique images.

n The exhibition is free and opens on october 24 from 11am-4pm.

Cards for Good Causes have opened their pop-up shop at Sevenoaks library offering shoppers stylish cards which also benefit local charities. They offer a range of card designs, wrapping paper and gift tags. At least 75p from every £1 is given to charities, including local organisations such as Kent Air Ambulance. The shop is open Monday to Saturday, 10am-4pm. Ends on December 18.

n For more information visit, www.cardsforcharity.co.uk or call on 01264 361555

Greeters who helped to give a warm welcome to over 30,000 visitors during the Olympics have attended a special event to celebrate their success. The volunteers were joined by representatives of Visit Kent, Kent County Council and Voluntary Action Maidstone. Applauded for their passion, knowledge and professionalism with visitors, it is anticipated that many will continue to volunteer.

Amy Smith, a 25-year-old midwife from knotts Place, Sevenoaks swam the english Channel in August this year in a fundraising event to raise money for Prostate Cancer uk. Amy swam 21 miles in the Channel’s shortest and busiest shipping lane in a gruelling 15 hour and 52 minute swim, finally making it to Wissant Beach on the coast of France in the early hours of the morning. Throughout her inspirational voyage Amy received support from her crew and sister who chugged along beside her. Peter Andre’s ‘Mysterious Girl’ was played at full volume from the boat when times got tough, keeping Amy focused on the task ahead and getting her through the pain. After several months of hard training and a jellyfish sting later, Amy’s brave efforts raised an amazing £680 for Prostate Cancer uk and a further £645 for Pengarth day Centre in Penzance. Amy would like to thank those at Joules Clothing for donating a very girly yet suitable swimming costume and her sponsor Pulsin, who provided her with energy filled snacks, that helped her to get across the Channel.

Britain out of recession

The big news this month has to be confirmation that Britain is no longer in recession. The latest set of figures show the economy grew by 1% in the 3rd quarter of this year, the fastest quarter’s growth for 5 years. But that isn’t the only good economic news. unemployment is down by 50,000 with the percentage out of work falling to 7.9% in the last three months. Inflation is down from 2.2% from 2.5% in August; this is less than half what it was in September last year. interest rates have been kept to a historic low of 0.5% - good news for mortgages. Finally, whilst the gap between public spending and borrowing (the ‘deficit’) we inherited from Labour was £165 billion a year

we’ve now closed that gap by one quarter to £121 billion a year. All this might not be as obviously exciting as say, e L James’ latest book, or who paid for what type of train ticket. But, what matters more than Westminster gossip are things like becoming employed, being able to meet your mortgage repayments, and having enough spare cash to be able to join your friends in the pub for a drink. What the figures show is that the economy is moving in the right direction and that it is becoming easier to do all those things. There’s still a long way to go, but this Government’s policies are working to get us there.

We catch up with Paralympic table tennis champion, Will Bayley

Why are you visiting Sevenoaks today?

i’m here visiting Sevenoaks Prep School. i’m a patron for the Tunbridge Wells-based environmental charity, Haller, and the school supports them too so i’m just having a chat with them about that as well as the olympics.

Were you disappointed to miss out on the gold medal this year?

I was disappointed but I’m going to be back fighting at Rio; full-time training starts next week so i can get used to having no social life again.

How did you get into table tennis?

i was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma at the age of 7 and couldn’t play action-filled sports so my Grandma bought me a table tennis kit.

How do you find inspiration and keep yourself motivated?

i watch sporting videos on YouTube and have inspirational quotes posted on my wall to keep me feeling positive.

The National Cycle Network, co-ordinated by Sustrans, has miles of walking and cycling routes and over one-third are completely traffic-free. Their easy routes are ideal for family days out and can be found at www.sustrans.org.uk. The website informs you of local attractions, the ground surface and type of ride it is as well as guiding you to the nearest place to rent bicycles.

So pack a picnic, pile the bikes on the car and take the kids out to explore the beautiful countryside and coastlines Kent has to offer.

GeT on your BikeStatistics have shown that since the London 2012 olympics Brits have felt inspired to get on their bikes. Vine discovers the best route-finders for cycling in Kent

T here are huge amounts of health benefits that come with cycling and as it’s a gentle form of exercise it’s

great for all the family. As with all forms of exercise, cycling will help ensure you get some quality shut-eye. It’ll also leave you feeling happier and will boost your brain power ensuring you’re more alert at work. Studies from Purdue University in the US have revealed that cycling regularly can cut your risk of heart disease by 50 per cent as well as reducing your risk of developing cancer.

As well as improving your health and fitness, riding a bike means that you get to see more, visiting places you wouldn’t usually see by car and where better to explore by bike than the garden of England? If you’re not sure where to go there are plenty of routing websites allowing you to choose your location, fitness level and how long you wish to be riding for.

Visit www.cycle-route.com and you

will find an endless list of routes across the area. Distance, difficulty and duration are highlighted at the top so you can easily find your ideal route; it even tells you how many calories you’d burn. Users uploading routes can post landmarks, pubs and places to see along the way as well as any additional information you may need such as whether it’s steep or based on particularly busy roads. There are a number of routes in the Sevenoaks and Tonbridge area currently posted.

Check out the leisure pages at www.kent.gov.uk for more cycle routes in Kent. The website allows you to download and print a PDF guide to take with you as well as giving you three different durations based on your cycling ability and speed. Sevenoaks is in the heart of the commuter belt and home to a diverse range of

nationalities. Those of you who are citizens of, or domiciled in, the US have an extra reason to be thankful this Thanksgiving. Until 31 December 2012 you have the benefit of a lifetime US estate and gift tax exemption of US$5.12 million, enabling you to transfer assets up to that value (less previous taxable gifts you have made) to your loved ones tax-free (with US married couples getting double the exemption). Gifts over the exempt amount are subject to tax at the all-time-low rate of 35 per cent. But there is only a limited window of opportunity – from 1 January 2013 the exemption reduces to US$1 million and the top rate of tax reverts to the 2001 rate of 5 per cent. Here are some planning ideas to think about: • If you’re happy to relinquish control of assets, make outright gifts up to the exempt amount to your family. • If you’d prefer the assets were held in a structure for your family’s benefit instead, create a trust offering a protective and flexible vehicle through which assets can be held long-term. Provided you’ve lived here fewer than 17 years and you’re not planning to settle UK property the trust will be outside the scope of UK inheritance tax (IHT). • If you’ve lived in the UK more than 15 years you could find yourself ‘deemed’ domiciled in the UK which means that IHT can be triggered on gifts into trust, in which case you could consider establishing a family limited partnership to achieve the succession and US

gift tax benefits of a trust without the IHT bill. • You could cancel loans/receivables from family members, reducing your estate’s value without impacting your real asset position. • If the matrimonial home is co-owned by (say) a US husband and a UK wife, a gift by the husband of all/part of his interest to the wife would benefit from the exemption and avoid US tax on gains on the property’s future sale. And even once the 31 December deadline has passed, it will still be vital that you ensure you have integrated US/UK tax and estate planning arrangements in place to minimise any UK/US tax exposure and safeguard your family’s future. Food for thought, along with the roast turkey and pumpkin pie? With the largest legal US/UK wealth planning team in the country and offices in the US, Europe & Asia, Withers is uniquely placed to advise on complex tax and estate planning issues for people with US or other international connections. Take advantage of this rare opportunity to pass your hard-earned wealth to your family rather than Uncle Sam and give us a call, before it’s too late.

n Withers has put together a suite of planning options for clients where a member of the family is a uS citizen. For more information on these, and our uS/uk team, please visit our dedicated web feature: http://features.withersworldwide.com/features/transatlantic-thinking or call 020 7597 6483

Thousands of buildings damaged, millions of trees flattened and lives lost. It’s been 25 years since the great storm of 1987; Vine takes a look at how Sevenoaks landscapes were hit and how they have recovered

Page 19: Vine - November

vinedigital.co.uk November 2012 vine 19

Don’t worry, there won’t be a hurricane but we will have strong winds”, were the infamous words that weatherman Michael Fish broadcast to the nation on the afternoon of 15 October 1987. Hours later the greatest storm to hit

south-east England for more than 200 years tore through the region. Kent, Essex, Sussex and Greater London received the harshest impact. This was unusual as the South East is an area of high population density and property exposure, not usually prone to such dramatic weather. During the storm a ship capsized at Dover and a ferry was blown ashore near Folkestone. Had the storm hit during the daytime it could have been an even bigger disaster and claimed more lives, fortunately such a storm is predicted only once every 300 years. Winds of over 100mph inflicted chaos on roads, buildings and the environment and Sevenoaks was amongst the worst-hit towns. On the morning of 16 October Sevenoaks residents awoke to utter devastation; roads were blocked, cars crushed and many homes and buildings damaged. The storm inevitably had an impact upon businesses, bringing some companies to financial ruin whilst creating opportunities for others. Landscapes were destroyed as trees fell like matchsticks across the town. Six of the seven well-known

oaks on the Vine Cricket Ground were ruined. The seven oaks were referred to as the ‘coronation trees’ as they were planted on the Vine in 1902 to commemorate the coronation of Edward VII. The oaks were supposed to keep alive the tradition of having seven oaks in the town but the morning after the storm just one oak was left standing. The story of the six fallen oaks has been told all

over the world but miscommunications meant some people got the wrong story. Italians were told the death toll ran into thousands whilst holidaymakers in Spain were horrified to hear that Sevenoaks was flattened and homes were blown off the earth. The greatest impact was on the environment. Trees which had stood in the Knole for 400 years lay collapsed on the ground; Knole Park lost a huge 610 trees during the storm including sweet chestnut and other traditional varieties. As the area of woodland at the Knole is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, most of the trees that fell were left as deadwood. Christopher Tipping, a land agent for the

Knole, tells Vine how the park has endeavoured to revive the land over the years. “There were a number of plantations created in the park after the storm. These are now over 20 years old. We are starting to put in place thinning programmes to ensure that they develop into mature, deciduous trees which will help protect the park's landscape for the future.” Chartwell’s tall beech trees which formerly stood

framing the view of the Weald were destroyed, leaving an exposed view across Kent. The neighbouring areas including Ide Hill and Toys Hill endured perhaps the harshest impact; Emmett’s Garden lost 95 per cent of its trees. However, the enormous redwood outside the mansion was one of the few to survive and its tip is still the highest point in Kent. Alan Comb has been a gardener at Emmett’s since the week after the storm and has worked hard on the regeneration of the woodland. He tells Vine, “Emmett’s were considering planting new trees prior to the storm so it actually gave us a once-in-a-lifetime chance to redevelop with a blank canvas. It was a real mixed bag of advantages and disadvantages for us. “The view over the Weald was very restricted prior to the storm as the trees acted as a border but with the trees gone it really opened up. The downside of the exposed space is that the area is windier. “The fallen trees left as deadwood have grown new trunks from the branches but as they are unstable it’s unknown how long they will be standing. The deadwood also increases the amount of fungi which has great environmental benefits.” Fungi help to feed nutrients and additional water back into the tree, more than the tree could manage alone. Many trees will die if enough fungus does not develop around their roots during their first year of growth. Alan tells us, “unfortunately we lost many of our champion trees; those that are an exceptional example of their species due to their age, rarity, scale or historical significance. And as trees were destroyed habitats were ruined too which meant loss of wildlife, mainly birdlife. We have also had many cases of squirrels stripping the beech off trees, which would not happen to mature trees. In a bad year we lost 200 trees because of this. Some areas were left to regenerate naturally but we have planted a lot, including many beech and birch trees. We’ve generally tried to keep the area the same as

it was. I do think Emmett’s can thrive as it did before the storm, it will just take time.” Regenerating Sevenoaks' landscape was a seemingly impossible task and a lot of areas had to be left to redevelop naturally. The community put on an

exceptional show of local pride when thousands turned up to participate in the planting of the new seven oaks on the Vine. Fast forward 25 years and Sevenoaks still bears scars as it’s still recovering now and will be for years to come. But through regrowth and natural regeneration the town has healed remarkably well. Though visitors can still see characteristics of the aftermath, Emmett’s gardens have developed magnificently. The storm gave them the opportunity to add autumn colour plants to their gardens, creating a dual season to match their Victorian Spring Garden. Knole Park’s grounds look healthier than

locals could have imagined at the time and despite the destruction of much of the wooded landscape, new plantation is blooming at the Knole. Toys Hill, where 98 per cent of trees were flattened. now has a non-intervention zone, which was set up after the storm. It is unknown whether the number of trees that fell that night was greater than those that fell during the storm of 1703, but the blemishes and wounds that our landscape wears will be a constant symbol of the distinctive legacy that could last for years to come.

Dental Elegance is a highly praised practice with an experienced team, using the most advanced technology to give you the head-turning smile you desire – whether it’s essential or aesthetic

dental elegance

Dental Elegance offers a wide range of services suitable for all, whether you are missing teeth or just want to straighten up. Services include the Inman Aligner; Tif Quereshi of Dental Elegance was the first dentist in the world to utilise the aligner. The revolutionary tool is ideal for patients seeking a removable, less-visible straightening device that aligns teeth in a fraction of the time conventional braces take. Dental implants are an excellent option for patients who have lost one or more teeth and provide an effective and permanent replacement for your false teeth. Implants are a more stable option than removable dentures and look and feel good too. If the idea of wearing visible braces has put you off achieving your dream smile, the practice alsooffers lingual braces. Metal brackets are fitted to the back of your teeth so are unobtrusive, straightening your teeth without anyone knowing you’re wearing braces. Extremely popularwith celebrities the lingual system comes in a variety of forms depending on which teeth requireattention. As the braces are fixed, remarkable results are achieved quicker than with removable braces. The practice also carries out veneer procedures: a popular choice of porcelain facings applied to your teeth to not only cover cracked or crooked teeth but also to reshape them and improve colour. Composite veneers can also solve twisted, chipped or gapped teeth speedily and affordably. Dental Elegance also offers general dentistry including bridges, crowns, teeth whitening and cleaning using only the best materials and is now thrilled to launch a range of non-surgical facial rejuvenation treatments. So whether you want to go a shade whiter or simply remove those coffee stains, Dental Elegance has options for everyone. Get in touch to find out more.

Conscious of his upper front teeth, Jamie was fed up with the yellow colour and the gap which looked like a missing tooth. He turned to Dental Elegance for help and was thrilled with the results. A removable orthodontic appliance was used to push the canine tooth back into position and then an Inman Aligner was used to straighten the rest of the upper teeth. Jamie’s teeth were whitened with in-surgery power whitening and a home kit. Finally, composite resin bonding was used to improve the shape and outline of the front four teeth. The upper left canine teeth were built up with a direct composite resin veneer.

Jamie’s new smile has made him more comfortable and confident in his day to day dealings with clients.

An established practice for over 18 years

Chris Ibbott joins our Dental Elegance team and welcomes you to their newly refurbished practice

Chris enjoys providing his patients with a full range of treatments and services and has a particular interest in smile enhancement and improvement using the most gentle and minimal techniques. Chris has participated in several extended training programmes in aesthetic and restorative dentistry since qualifying from Sheffield University in 1997 and is a member of the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry and the British Society of Occlusal Studies. Outside of dentistry Chris is a keen musician and enjoys spending time with his family and two young daughters.

It is an interest in gentle aesthetic dentistry which led Chris to discover the Inman Aligner and the incredible benefits which it can offer patients. A relatively simple removable brace which can straighten the front teeth in, on average, 2 to 4 months was unthinkable five years ago. The Inman is now one of the most exciting services Chris can provide for his patients and , when combined with tooth whitening and bonding, this can provide some life changing results!

• Fast – most cases take just 6–16 weeks• Simple – only one Inman Aligner is needed• No extractions required• Removable – Only needs to be worn 16–20 hours a day• Great value – aligner treatment costs just £1,600

Whether your reasons for a new smile are

entirely aesthetic or are clinically required, dental

elegance ensures its patients receive exactly the results they’re

looking for by following only the most ethical treatments and solutions available. But dental elegance doesn’t just offer tailor-made cosmetic dentistry services, it is also an established general dentistry practice that can make sure

your teeth not only look great, but are also as healthy as possible. So in addition to the top-of-the-line aesthetic treatments, you can also have, for example, your root treatments, implants, and cleaning and prevention seen to all under one roof. And with its customer-service-focused and fully trained team of staff, not to mention results you could have once only dreamed of, dental elegance is the all-encompassing dental practice that you can’t wait to visit again. n For more information on any of the treatments,

ask THe BeTTeR BodY SHoPAnswering your exercise dilemmas

Q: My son already plays sport regularly with his school and outside school clubs; how would he benefit from training at the BBS?

A: BBS Young Athlete development works in conjunction with schools and clubs by helping young people improve on areas of physical education that they often don’t have the time or resources to focus on, including:• Improving flexibility • Improving posture whilst standing, sitting and moving • Improving nutritional education • Reducing the risk of sporting injuries and pain • Improving stability and strength of core muscles

Q: I’m worried about my teenage son getting into weights too early, is it safe?

A: Yes, progressed resistance training beginning at a foundation level has lower injury rates than any other sport and reduces the likelihood of injury. Most common injuries and pains arise from one or a combination of a lack of flexibility, weakness and instability of the core muscles around the hips and repetitive improper movement. our three stages ensure that a young person cannot pass stage one without demonstrating that they are adequate in all three of those areas. Stage one alone reduces their risk of future injury and helps bone growth and development.

Q: What is the first step for my son or daughter to start training at the BBS?

A: Young Athlete development at the BSS starts with a free 30-minute Functional Movement Screen, designed to assess a young person’s current level of flexibility, movement and core

stability. The young person will then begin training and work through three stages of progression: • Stage 1 – Foundation – Learning to move correctly (establishing correct movement patterns, improving body awareness, developing confidence.) • Stage 2 – Development – Building a strong posture (Building blocks for correct posture, strengthening weak muscles and joints identified in initial testing, maintaining correct posture during movement). • Stage 3 – Skill – Bringing it all together (Lifting competency, multi-joint exercising, sport specific training.)

each stage has a set of tests, designed so that the child can demonstrate their improved flexibility, movement and core strength and stability in order to pass onto a more advanced stage.

Q: I am worried that my daughter will develop bad eating habits if she starts dieting?

A. This is a real concern; at the BSS rather than provide children with a strict diet to follow we aim to educate them, enabling them to make well-informed decisions. The unfortunate fact is that children as young as five are becoming overweight and developing symptoms of type 2 diabetes. Basics such as knowing which foods to eat less of, understanding food labels and packed lunch ideas are simple but effective in improving children’s day to day and long-term eating habits. n To find out more about the BBS Young Athlete development programme and book in for your free 30-minute consultation call 01732 451979. www.betterbodyshop.co.uk

Caring for ouR CoMMuniTYin this column i discuss topical issues around social care. Whether you are wrestling with a family dilemma, looking for support for a loved one, or just interested in the debate, i hope you will find something of interest.

Q: What technology is available to help my older relative living in their own home?

A: Technology to help people living at home, who have needs around mobility and security is still fairly basic. I remember years ago seeing a television programme that showed technology allowing you to switch on the oven at home from your laptop at the office, now I am sure you can do that from your smartphone in California. But these things have yet to make an appearance in the UK. However there are some helpful bits and pieces that are available. Starting with the most basic, there are a huge range of grab rails, safety bannisters and handles for baths, showers and awkward corners that can be easily installed in a home. Preventing falls should be a key part of making a home safe. Think about where someone is twisting or turning – in or out of a bath, stepping out onto a patio, opening a door, etc. Adjusting the heights of things from raised toilet seats, to electric beds, and electric chairs that rise up to allow easy standing from them – all these solutions are available and can make a real difference to how someone is coping with reduced mobility in their own home. A really good source of advice on what is available is your local Occupational Therapist (OT) which you can find through your GP. Gadgets that help are useful too with preparing food or easing communication. They can range from jar-opening devices and

adapted can openers, assistance with drawer or cupboard opening and closing, through to large number home phones or mobile phones with larger buttons. There are even mobile phones with GPS trackers, so you can locate a loved one with dementia who is prone to wander. On the more advanced technology side, there are tried and tested alarm devices for calling assistance. These can be bracelets or pendants or a plug in box, all of which when pressed send an alarm to a monitoring centre, who can then call your designated contacts to alert them to the situation. These really are a must have for someone living alone who is at risk of falls. More advanced systems can also monitor for fire or gas leaks and alert emergency services. Finally there is the world of face to face communication, whether through Skype via a computer and webcam, or Facetime via an iPad or smartphone. New advanced digital TVs can allow Skype through the TV screen with an internet connection. Maybe something to think about for Christmas: a new TV for a loved one that enables you to have a family Christmas video call in real time to say ‘Happy Christmas’ if you can’t be there!

Relaxed and revitalised

Owners Ben Hards and Lucy Bulbrook designed their hair salon and beauty rooms with the idea of an oasis in mind, and this is reflected in the décor. The sophisticated black and white interior, inspired by the Carita beauty

spa in France, relaxes you with its simplicity. Accents of mauve, along with crystal lights and accessories, bring warmth and interest, but the look is not overly feminine. The spa appeals to men too, as they regularly come in for eye treatments, facials and haircuts.

“People are more conscious of being well groomed,” says Lucy, so it doesn’t surprise her at all that men now want the same pampering treatments as women. “Despite the hard economic times, people still want to treat themselves,” she continues, explaining that at this time of year massages and hot stones are popular, while in the summer people make regular appointments for pedicures and waxes.

Whatever the season, the treatment most in demand is the facial. And having experienced one of my own at The Square, I completely understand why. While sipping a complimentary coffee, I am asked by my beauty specialist whether I have any particular concerns about my skin. A facial treatment always begins with such a consultation so that any problems – eczema, psoriasis or acne – can be taken into account and the facial tailored to your needs.

As I sink back into the warm massage bed, a deliciously cool cream with hints of lemon grass is applied to my face, cleansing the skin and instantly relaxing the muscles. A thorough exfoliation with Le Rénovateur follows – the rich smell of dry roasted sunflower seeds, lemon and thyme is quite intoxicating – which removes dead

skin cells and stimulates cell regeneration. Legions of women swear by the Carita Pro-Lift facial,

in which a special device massages the products deeper into your skin, leaving the face visibly lifted and brighter. As we age our elastin and collagen break down; the Pro-Lifting stage picks up and restructures the muscle, so that it works as younger-looking skin again. Your neck, cheekbone, décolleté and eyebrow areas are all treated, and show an instant result.

About an hour later, just as I am dropping off to sleep, I feel another delicately scented moisturiser making its way into my skin. Parisian beauty brand Carita uses such gentle, natural products that I feel no irritation at all; no wonder beauties from Audrey Hepburn to Cheryl Cole have raved about it.

My eyes are soothed by cool patches and my arms and hands gently massaged. How cruel to have to go back to work! At least I have my next appointment to look forward to, and if my family and friends are really nice to me I will be buying them gift vouchers and gift sets from The Square this Christmas too...

Garden Managementand Design

Most plants will either flower during the summer or winter months, meaning it takes a lot of maintenance to keep your garden looking

beautiful and bright throughout the year. But wouldn’t it be nice not to have to worry about the condition of your plants? Here are a few flowering shrubs that stay stunning all year round, so you no longer have to panic or waste time on the welfare of your garden.

WinTeR sCentWinter may bring festivities and joy but what flowers do you plant during the chilly season? Vine uncovers the top three winter favourites that will keep your garden smelling fresh and looking colourful all year round

This well-known herb has aromatic evergreen foliage throughout the year ; some varieties grow low to the ground and are ideal for flowerbeds. In mid-spring the plant creates blue, pink and white flowers and colourful green foliage that stays for the rest of the year. This is an idyllic plant for any garden entrance or patio display. Rosemary grows best in sunlight, releasing a beautiful aroma, but best of all, pests hate it making this a natural repellent for any garden.

This hardy evergreen is ideal for low hedges with its sweet-smelling feathery grey and silver-white foliage. Many green-fingered gardeners trim the shrub, keeping it from flowering; however, when left the cotton lavender produces button-like

yellow flowers from June to August and can grow up to 30 inches high. This plant grows well in both sunlight and partial shade, making this an easy plant to maintain and keep healthy.

More commonly known as Myrtle, this evergreen shrub flowers later in the year, producing beautiful star-shaped white petals. its dark green leaves release a sweet perfume all year round and its best kept in shaded areas as very high or very low temperatures can kill it. Myrtus can grow very quickly when planted in the ground, a tip would be to pot it in a medium to large plant pot, slowing its growth rate and making it easier to maintain.

MIRROR MIRROR ON THE WALL,

who is the fairest of them all?

In your television appearances you normally play nice/mild-mannered characters (One Foot In the Grave/Benidorm). How does it feel to be playing the “evil character” in pantomime?

Baddies are always more fun. Actors like to do something different.

When was your last pantomime appearance and who co-starred with you?

Babes in the Wood in Manchester in1976. I played one of the babes, Alan Rickman was a squirrel who covered me with leaves while I was asleep.

Who is the best person you have ever worked with in TV or theatre and who would you like to work with?

There are too many wonderful actors I have worked with to be able to choose one. But my list would

include Alison Steadman, Brenda Blethyn, Sean Connery, Christian Bale, Colin Farrell, Laurence Olivier and many many others. I would like to work with Judy Dench and who knows wishes sometimes come true. Especially in Panto!

Is Richard Wilson (from well known sitcom One Foot in the Grave) really that much of a humbug ?

Richard is one of my favourite people. He is adorable, amazingly generous, kind, and very funny.

What are your plans after Snow White?

After Snow White I am hoping to be in a new Mike Leigh film and then I am off to Benidorm again in March.

Vine caught up with actress Janine Duvitski of ITV1’s Benidorm and BBC1’s One Foot in the Grave who will be starring as the Wicked Queen in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

Holly Seddon has the last word

W e have a new pet! Can you guess what it is? No, silly, not a dog. A cat? No, we

have two of those already and they’re on a mission to scratch and pee their whole species out of our hearts. A hamster? Got one already. A guinea pig? Got two already! Oh you’ll never get it... because we’d never have imagined it, but we have a peahen.

Now we didn’t set out to get a peahen. We didn’t set out to get any new pets because my husband has laid down a very strict ‘one in, one out’ policy and I’m quite fond of the children.

No, we didn’t set out to get a peahen. And not in the “we didn’t set out to [insert ridiculous thing] but then we drank [insert ridiculous amounts]. It wasn’t one of those wild nights where you wake up the next day, whisky fog in mouth, shards of memories from the night splintering your head before coming downstairs to find a house full of furry things and a dim recollection of rampaging through a pet shop, buying up companions. No, rest assured, not only did we not do that, but we’ve never done that.

No, we didn’t set out to get a peahen, but a peahen came and got us. And she has wrapped her feathers around my heart (and sprayed her droppings all over our garden).

The weekend after we moved into this new house, I was awoken by a strange sound around 5am. It sounded like a cross between a klaxon and a car

alarm. I was less than impressed and full of feverish mumbled threats to the new neighbours. Until I looked out of my window to see what looked like a goose parading up and down, honking for all the world to hear. Now this was different, now I was extra-impressed. I love a goose!

Over the days and weeks, the ‘goose’ started to get braver and braver. She would appear from the bushes as I arrived home, and watch me, her face cocked to the side. I would find her and the eldest cat (who is usually a right wimpy cry baby) sitting in easy union,

watching the world go by on the porch. Then, she started to come into the garden. By this point I had got a good look at her and taken more pictures than a new parent, and eventually identified her as a wild peahen. With which came a name: Penelope. Penelope the peahen.

Every morning she waits for me to chuck her

a bit of food and when I sit on the sofa at weekend (which is what weekends are for) she sits on the bank of garden outside so we’re parallel, as if she’s sitting with me. Which she has now also tried, bursting through any open window or door at any opportunity. Most recently, she made for the stairs.

The best thing about this whole peahen situation, is that I am not responsible! I’m blame free! I’ve managed to scam-ola a whole new pet, the most awesome, frankly, of all our pets, and I don’t have to take the blame for all the poo.
