10 Fascinating Facts About BeaujolaisNouveau!

Click on Lucy's Picture!

Beaujolais[BOE-zjoh-lay]Nouveau is alwaysreleased the thirdThursday ofNovember, regardlessof the start of theharvest.

1.

The region ofBeaujolais is 34miles long from northto south and 7 to 9miles wide. There arenearly 4,000 grapegrowers who make their living in thispicturesque region just north of France's thirdlargest city, Lyon.

2.

All the grapes in the Beaujolais region mustbe picked by hand. These are the onlyvineyards, along with Champagne, wherehand harvesting is mandatory.

3.

Gamay (Gamay noir Jus Blanc) is the onlygrape permitted for Beaujolais. While certainCalifornia wineries may label their wine"Gamay Beaujolais" this is not the samegrape variety as what is grown in France, andis quite different in taste and growing habits.

4.

Beaujolais Nouveau cannot be made fromgrapes grown in the 10 crus (great growths) ofBeaujolais-only from grapes coming from theappellations of Beaujolais and Beaujolais-Villages.

5.

Beaujolais Nouveau owes its easydrinkability to a winemaking process calledcarbonic maceration, also called whole berryfermentation. This technique preserves thefresh, fruity quality of the wine, withoutextracting bitter tannins from the grape skins.

Beaujolais Nouveau is meant to be drunkyoung-in average vintages it should beconsumed by the following May after its release. However, in excellent vintages (such as 2000)the wine can live much longer and can beenjoyed until the next harvest rolls around.

7.

Serve Beaujolais Nouveau slightly cool, atabout 55 degrees Fahrenheit-the wine is morerefreshing and its forward fruit more apparentthan if you serve it at room temperature.

8.

Approximately 1/3 of the entire crop of theBeaujolais region is sold as BeaujolaisNouveau.

9.

The region of Beaujolais is known for itsfabulous food.

Thanksgiving, Gratitude, Respect; notEnvy.

Stop in the CSRA's largest wine shop. The selection will shock and surpriseyou. With over 2100 brands in stock, you are sure to find a wine you have beenlooking for. If you can't find it here we will tell you where to find it or order itfor you.

No one in the CSRA has a larger selection of wine! We beat our competitorsby having twice the brands to pick from. And pricing, well shop around andcompare. We buy most of our wine in bulk and pass the savings on to you. Ifyou can get it less some where else, we will tell you where.

On top of all this we take the mystery out of wine by having weekendtastings that you will not find in liquor stores. often our tastings are cateredby local businesses and restaurants. We also have special in-house tastingswith winemakers and vineyard owners plus wine dinners at localrestaurants.

We always rank high in the so called "Best of" but we are proud of our rankingsbecause we don't play the silly fill-out-as-many-ballots-as-you-can-and-send-them-in-game like so many others do. We haven't filled one of thoseforms out in years. We let the others play that game and we just keep onkeeping on bringing you the best wines and service!

So bring in a friend and visit the best wine store in the CSRA. You will not bedisappointed.

Cheers!
