• Challenge– The desktop infrastructure costs too much for the business to

sustain– The pressure on the users of this environment require that this

environment be 100% stable and available (outages cost sales)– The users of this environment are not very computer saavy and

just want the applications that they require to do their job to be available

– These users are often in remote or branch locations

• Wyse Solution– Create a SBC environment based on Wyse and Wyse partner

technologies to deliver the applications to low cost thin clients– WSM will play an important role in this environment

• Wyse Success Stories and Proof Points– Deutsche Bank– Walmart

Inherent Costs to any PC Infrastructure

The current concept of a managed PC environment has costs which are growing out of control. The major elements which are driving these costs are, by their nature, inherent to the de-centralized PC environment. These costs include:– On-Site Support Costs, both hardware and software– HW failure costs– SW distribution costs– Move, Add and Chance (MAC) Costs– Supplemental HW/SW costs (i.e. De-centralized File Servers, De-

Centralized Mail Servers)– Network Costs– Environmental Costs (i.e. Electricity, Desk Space, Cooling)– Insurance Costs (i.e. Theft, Loss)– Security Costs (i.e. Virus Attacks, Data Theft, Data Loss)– Business Continuity Costs (i.e. PC Backup/Recovery, Site

Duplicaiton Costs)

Page 16: VINTAGE - CIRCA2006 Wyse Enterprise Solutions Overview

wyse.com

Additional Cost Reduction Possibilities of SBC

By developing a server-based computing (SBC) approach, most, if not all, of the previously shown costs can be eliminated or at the very least drastically reduced. Many other costs which are inherent to providing a desktop infrastructure to the end user can also be reduced or better controlled including:– Software licensing costs– Operating System support costs– Software support costs– Software time-to-market– User productivity loss due to down time

Page 17: VINTAGE - CIRCA2006 Wyse Enterprise Solutions Overview

Pros/Cons of Server Based ComputingAdvantages

+ Fewer client hardware updates+ Many-to-one support of users which does

not tie a user to a machine+ Centralized user support (no need for on-

site application or upgrade support)+ Reduced network traffic

• Fat Client 40% (80% peak)• Streaming Client 20% (60% peak)• Screen-Casting Client 0.5% (4%)

+ Easier to manage software licenses and usage

+ Easier to track and control what data is leaving the company to whom

+ Easier to ensure that all user data has a full backup/restore capability

+ Easier to control the influx of viruses (no unknown devices in the trusted environment)

+ Faster, easier and more controllable software deployment

+ A true disaster recovery environment is inherent to the architecture

+ A controlled BCM environment is inherent to the architecture

Disadvantages– User perception/acceptance

of not having a computer of their own

– For screen-casting, applications which are not terminal server friendly could cause problems (i.e. CAD)

– Dependency on the resiliency of the LAN/WAN environment

– Local device support is limited (Handheld synchronization OK, Scanners not)

– Limited number of vendors (i.e. VMWare, Microsoft, Citrix, Sun, Linux Terminal Server)

Server Based Computing Environments

Screen Casting– All of the applications run on the

server– Only the display is sent over the

wire using a predefined protocol which both the server and the client understand

– Chief providers of this type of server based computing include:• Microsoft (Windows Terminal

Services/RDP)• Citrix (Presentation Server/ICA)• Sun (Secure Global Desktop

Software)

Environment Streaming– Stateless client– Operating environment (OS

and applications) is streamed to the client

– Can work with screen casting infrastructures

– Chief providers of this type of server based computing include:

• Wyse (Wyse Streaming Manager)

• Ardence (OS only)• Softricity (Applications

only)

Page 23: VINTAGE - CIRCA2006 Wyse Enterprise Solutions Overview

Comparison of Screen-Casting to Environment Streaming

Screen Casting (ICA/RDP)+ Reduced network band+ Common OS Environment+ Client Agnosticism+ Business Continuity Anywhere– Not All Applications Cast Well

• Video• CAD/CAM

– Device Support is Difficult– Server Licensing Models are

Expensive (MS TS + Citrix)– Applications must be Re-packaged

for TS– Software must still be distributed

to all application servers

Environment Streaming+ All applications can be supported+ Common OS Environment+ No Application Re-Packaging

Required+ Relative Client Agnosticism+ Business Continuity Where

Environment Can be Streamed+ Full Device Support+ No Server Licensing Model

Required (but VM model may have advantages)

+ No software distribution costs (streaming application is only made available to stream to selected clients)

– More network bandwidth required
