The Declaration on the Elimination of VAW defines VAW as “any act of gender-based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual or any harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation whether occurring in public or in private life”

As many as 74%of people living with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa in 2006 were young women. This region represents 60% of all people living with HIV.
