Omen: The Virgin Spear always feels warm, regardless of outside temperature. HISTORY The Virgin Spear was created millennia ago by the Greek deity Athena, Goddess of Wisdom. It has been passed from champion to champion, each claiming to be the chosen warrior of the goddess. (DC 5) Ares, God of War, grew jealous of soldiers swearing fealty to Athena instead of him. Among his attempts at retribution was the destruction of Athena’s Virgin Spear. Athena, sensing the plot, sent the Spear to the one place into which Ares would never venture – the titan dungeon of Tartarus. Ares tried several times to send champions into Tartarus to reclaim the Spear, but none returned. (DC 10) When Zeus created his own champion from the heart of a fallen god and soul of an ancient hero, he named him Achilles Warkiller. As part of his initiation and proof of worth, Zeus sent Achilles into Tartarus to fetch the Virgin Spear. Achilled remained there for several weeks, and the gods of Olympus presumed him dead. One night, however, he rose from the earth – burnt and wounded – but wielding the Spear. Achilles was then granted guardianship of Olympus, the throne of Themyscira, and ownership of the Virgin Spear of Athena. (DC 15) LEGACY RITUALS Three rituals are required to unlock all the abilities of Virgin Spear. A Test of Worth: You must not only wield Virgin Spear, which requires divine worthiness, but must willingly be struck by lightning from any natural or magical source and survive. Possessing supplemental spell resistance or energy resistance nullifies the ritual, though innate resistances have no effect. Cost: 750 gp, 500 XP. Feat Granted: Least Legacy (Virgin Spear). Defender of Asgard: You must single-handedly defeat a Frost Giant, or other known enemy of Asgard, with an Encounter Level at least equal to your character level. You may only use Virgin Spear and your own magic, psionics or spell-like abilities. If you use benefits from another’s magic or wield any other weapon in the encounter, the ritual is nullified. Cost: 7,500 gp, 1,000 XP. Feat Granted: Lesser Legacy (Virgin Spear). Blessing of the All-Father: You must travel to the Plane of Asgard, where the deity Odin himself must declare you worthy of the power of Virgin Spear. You must then spend 24 continuous hours in Asgard before returning to your native plane. Cost: 16,000 gp, 2,000 XP. Feat Granted: Greater Legacy (Virgin Spear).
